Another resident says the house was “en- gulfed by vagrants” who slept in and around it. “That house has been a headache to us all for so many years,” he says. “We could deal with it being an eyesore, but the real headache was dealing with the mis- creants who bombarded the place. They would make a noise all night long and it was worse on weekends.” Describing the activities in the house as “horrendous”, the resident recalls a murder at the house after it had been abandoned in 2004. “The things that used to go on in that house are horrendous. They used to take drugs there. Although we don’t know much details, the murder is common knowledge.” Constable Nkululeko Mnyaka, spokesper- son for Lansdowne police, confirms a woman was murdered at the house. “In 2008, while vagrants were still inhabit- ing the house, one of the vagrants murdered his girlfriend,” Mnyaka confirms. He says the police were repeatedly called out by residents who complained of rowdy be- haviour at the house. A nearby resident, who also prefers to re- main unnamed, says the new owner has se- cured the services of a security contractor to keep vagrants away. The resident adds that he is happy the house will be rid of the solemn atmosphere. “The place is finally going to look decent after so many years,” he says. “With a fresh coat of paint and a bit of cleaning it will once again add value to the area.” Ward councillor Anthea Green says since she became the council representative last year, she has not dealt with any complaints regarding the house. She refrained from giving comment as she is not too familiar with its history. However, she says she is happy that im- provements are being made to the house. “Improvements are always more palatable to the eye than a messed up and dowdy build- ing,” says Green. Dear reader,

Occasions such asChristmas andEid are re-nowned forupholding traditions and customs.

OnSunday, SouthAfricans joined 1.5 billionMuslims around the world in celebrating Eid-ul-Fitr, the festival of charity signalling theend of the holy month of Ramadan.

In addition to prayers, spending time withfamily and friends and enjoying tra-ditional Eid dishes such as leg oflamb, breyani and trifle, it was atime to celebrate, unite and givethanks for our many blessings.

Also, to forgive.Generosity prevails during this

time, with “Labarang boxes” –equivalent of a Christmas box – giv-en to parents and children in thefamily and community.

Whenmy five siblings and I werelaaities, wewould traipse District 6, Drydocksand Walmer Estate on Eid, returning home atthe end of the day with R2 – made up of half, one and two cents. We were chuffed with ourtakings – money had a lot more value then.

You could get three sweets for half cent atMrGoodman’s, our favourite sweet and comicbook shop in Hanover Street.

Today however, with inflation as it is andthe depreciation of our currency, it is commonfor the children in my family to amass hun-dreds of rands on Eid.

But not everything about tradition, as inter-preted by some families, leaves warm fuzzyfeelings. In the 70s and 80s, children wouldspend Eid playing games on granny’s stoep,or gather in a roomwhile the aunts andunclessit in the lounge around a decadent tea table.

My gran’s house in Ravenscraig Road,

Walmer Estate, would hum with happiness, laughter, chatter – and the invariable familyspat that signalled the end of another “tradi-tional” Abrahams Eid, and time for everyoneto say their perhaps not-so-fond goodbyes.

Despite best intent andvalue extracted fromevents at gran’s house, my siblings and I havealso had a few “too traditional” Eids that sawamong others, a delicate cushion being flung,

ire at a sibling notorious for visit-ing our parents’ house too late andinability to reach consensus as atwhose house to end the day.

Perhaps technology holds the an-swer to altering tradition as ourfamily observes it. On Eid, duringvisits, most youngsters and adultsspent sufficient quality time withtheir cellphones, sending greetingsto others and keeping contact. It’smore efficient and eco-friendly to

send electronic greeting cards – and potential-ly less volatile.

Another solution may be that we revert tomaking things; clothes for ourselves and ourchildren, bake from scratch our pastries andbiscuits as opposed to buying almost every-thing nowadays.Perhaps we aren’t tiredenough on Eid, because we’ve bought the le-kker tartlets and steak pies once traditionallylovingly made by our mothers and grand-mothers.

Nice thought in theory, but I prefer buyingmy favourite treats, in the same loving waymy mom and gran made them.’Til next time, go well!ConnectED is a weekly column by Peo-

ple’s Post editor Feroza Miller-Isaacs whocan be contacted on [email protected].

CITY officials promise that a “plannedintervention” will soon see the problemof vagrants eliminated in Rylands.

Persistent complaints from infuriated res-idents have resulted in a visit from MayoralCommittee member for Safety and Security,JP Smith, and councillor Magadien Davidsto the College Road bridge – described as ahub of criminal activity.

At the on-site meeting, which took placeon Thursday, Smith and Davids were able tosee the activities for themselves.

Joined by Social Development and LawEnforcement, Smith and Davids have decid-ed to work as a team to uproot the vagrancyproblem.

Davids says that the situation, whichstarted as homeless people needing shelter, has snowballed into an area which has be-come a node point for criminal activity.

“Residents have gone from complainingabout noise levels and illegal fires to break-ins and drug dealing,” says Davids.

Also acknowledging that the vagrantspose a great health and safety hazard, Davidsstresses that this is not a conducive way ofliving.

“With the help of Social Development wewill be taking steps to remove the vagrantsand place them in a shelter. Those whorefuse to move and those who continue withcriminal behaviour will be dealt with by lawenforcement,” he says.

Wayne Aldridge, the principal inspectorfor Law Enforcement’s Displaced People’sUnit, says Law Enforcement will play itspart by dealing with criminal activity, dumping and fighting.

“A planned intervention will be takingplace very soon but unfortunately we cannotdivulge a date or time”, he says.

Aldridge continues that although “it’s not

with the unit on a survey to see how manypeople there are who need assistance interms of placement and those who want tobe reunited with family,” says Finch.

“Although we can’t force people to move, they have to be aware that if they violate anybylaws they will be dealt with by Law En-forcement. If they are taking part in criminalactivity they will be dealt with by the po-lice.”

Davids says he has faith that their efforts

will bear fruit. “We are approaching this is-sue with all the resources at hand and every-one is pulling their weight,” he says. “It isimportant to deal with these problems, butI also want these vagrants to be dealt within a dignified manner.”

a crime to be home-less” they will be tar-geting those engagingin criminal activity.

“We don’t want tocriminalise the peo-ple, but we will bedealing with theircriminal actions,” hesays.

“These people are apotential danger formotorists becausethey get intoxicatedand walk across theroad without takingprecautions. We willalso be dealing withthose who blatantly ig-nore the City’s by-laws.”

Manager of SocialDevelopment, Cor-nelia Finch, says hermain aim is to find al-ternative accommoda-tion for the vagrants.

PROUDLY Manenberg has shelved itsplans to take government to court.

This, on the heels of the Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Af-fairs’ (Cogta) decision to provisionally re-verse its withdrawal of a contract awardedto Proudly Manenberg for a communitywork programme (CWP). The organisationwas split after it lost the contract last month. The CWP is an employment safety net pro-

viding access to a minimum level of regularwork on an ongoing basis for those in need.Proudly Manenberg’s chairperson, Mario

Wanza, says: “Wehave suspendedour consti-tutional court case against government fol-lowing a meeting with Cogta minister, Rich-ard Baloyi, late last month.”“The information provided by Proudly

Manenberg on why and how our contractwas terminated, was news to the minister.”TheNPOwill againmeetwithBaloyi today

to discuss the way forward in terms of pro-viding them with a concrete decision.“For now our CWP contract continues.

This has major benefits for the people in-volvedwith the project.Government, howev-er, needs to give funding to all communitiesto uplift people and bring about a positivechange,” Wanza says. The Minister also advised in the meeting

that no one is fired and that Proudly Manen-berg continue with the programme untilsuch time as theMinister has appraised him-self. Baloyi had now provisionally re-instat-ed Proudly Manenberg as implementingagent.Wanza explainswhy their contract had ini-

tially been terminated. A letter tabled at ameeting with Proudly Manenberg on 17 Julystates: “The institution will not be able tomeet the service delivery levels and compli-ance as laid downby theDepartment ofCoop-

erative Governance and Traditional Affairs. Therefore, after consultation with all stake-holders, we have no alternative as to termi-nate the services of Proudly Manenberg.”Meanwhile, Consol has responded to ques-

tions surrounding their recent High Courtapplication to prohibit Proudly Manenbergfrom using the Waterfront. The glass giant sought to get a final order

against the NPO from occupying the land. But Wanza says everybody has always

been welcome to make use of theWaterfrontin Vygiekraal Road.ThamiMkhuzangwe, theHumanResourc-

es director at Consol Glass, says a HighCourt interim interdict was requested andobtained following the unlawful occupationof Consol premises by the NPO’s committeerepresentatives in November 2011.“The interim interdict that was obtained

in January was postponed for finalisation inFebruary 2012, and again postponed to 8 Au-gust for finalisation of the order.”He says: “The judge indicated on 8 August

that while he was satisfied with the meritsof the application, certain accusations beingmade by Wanza warranted investigation. These accusations pertained to the allegedbreach of the Mining and Petroleum Re-sourcesDevelopmentAct, as follows: the fail-ure to implement a safety plan, failure to pro-tect the environment and failure to lookmeaningfully at the social development ofthe community.”The Minister of Mineral Resources, Susan

Shabangu, has been called in by the judge tocomment on Consol’s compliance as her de-partment regularly conducts inspections atthe glass company’s premises.“Consol has never received any notifica-

tion or been subject to any investigations, interms of non-compliancewith regard to envi-ronmental, health and safety matters,” addsMkhuzangwe.

Proudly Manenbergcontract reinstated

BATTLE CONTINUES: The battle for the Waterfront in Vygiekraal Road, Manenberg, continuesas Consol Glass seeks to get nonprofit organisation Proudly Manenberg off their premises.

SUMMER JACOBS

THE mothers of child abuse victims weretreated to a special lunch.

Forty excited women gathered at the Ath-lone Civic Centre on Thursday for an annualWomen’s Month event hosted by the SafelineChild Abuse Treatment and Prevention Cen-tre.Inner strength and inner beauty – the theme

for this year’s event – resonated throughoutthe songs and traditional and spiritual dancesperformed by women.Safeline director Rochelle Philander says it

was touching to see the women enjoying the

entertainment while eating a hearty threecourse meal.“All of these women have come through ex-

treme challenges, one of them is the hurt theirchildren experience,” she says.Marlene Simeon, one of the guest speakers,

says the event is awonderful way to showcaseSafeline’s work.“It is truly a beautiful thing to see abused

and disadvantaged women being impacted insuch a personal way,” she says.“For many women this was the first time

they could sit back and allow themselves tobe pampered.“Seeing their gratitude is a reward to us a

thousand times over.”

SUMMER JACOBS

AFTER numerous complaints about theunorganised running of the Dr Abdurah-man Day Hospital, measures have beenput in place to make patients’ visits morebearable.

The problem of early morning queues andlong waiting periods for medication at theday hospital is finally being addressed.A Wendy house structure is currently be-

ing erected at the front of the hospital.Patients will be allowed to gather there

early in the morning. This area will now serve as the entrance

and will be guarded by security.Beyond the security area, there will also

be a covered area where people can sit whilewaiting for the hospital to open. Two weeks ago, provincial minister of

health, Theuns Botha, and ward 49 council-lor Suzette Little had a walkabout at the hos-pital.Little says that after hearing about peo-

ple’s complaints shemade enquiries andwasinformed that the hospital was part of pro-vincial government’s mandate.“When I found out that the hospital be-

longed to the province I made an appoint-ment with Minister Botha for a walkabout,”says Little. At the inspection, Little says it was agreed

among staff, the minister and herself, thatthe building is in good condition. She says, however, that this does notmean

it’s not due for an upgrade.“Both short-term and long-term measures

have been discussed. Beside the structures

which are currently being erected, there arealso talks about expanding the pharmacy ar-ea, which is too small,” says Little. The long-termmeasures include a redevel-

opment programme which, Little says, stillhas to be confirmed.“My first option would be a total upgrade

of the centre,” she says.Little also urges patients to stick to ap-

pointment schedules to prevent problems.“It has been confirmed that there is an ap-

pointment arrangement at the hospital. Ifpeople stick to their appointment times thenone would not see the amount of peoplestanding on the streets,” she says.“People believe first come, first served but

it does not work that way. Even if they comethrough early in the morning, if their ap-pointment is at 10:00 they are only going tobe seen at 10:00.”Elizabeth Louw (87) from Bridgetown says

she welcomes any relief for senior citizens.“I think providing patients with seats and

shelter from the weather is a good idea. Ican’t walk any more so I always need to sitand a nice seat would be a blessing,” shesays.Another patient, Lona Baugaard, wel-

comes the idea of seats being available forthe elderly so early in the morning. However, she says that there are other rea-

sons for people queuing in the morning, be-sides wanting to be helped first.“Most of the seniors struggle to walk or

can’t walk at all,” she explains.“So when they have to be at the hospital

they usually get lifts from children or neigh-bours who drop them on their way to work.”Baugaard also points out that those who

stick to their appointment dates still spendquite a lengthy period at the hospital.“There is still a long wait for medication

and patient folders, so I think there is moreto the problem than just people who don’tstick to appointment dates,” she says.

The gift of lifeTHIS is National Organ Donor AwarenessMonth. In the face of a dire shortage of donors to

match a growing need, this country is puntedon the South African government website as“a world leader for transplants”.This accolade is not undeserved.On3December 1967,DrChristiaanBarnard

performed the world’s first heart transplantafter the family ofDeniseDarvall donated herheart to Louis Washkansky.Darvall suffered severe brain damage in a

car accident and Washkansky was sufferingof gross heart failure and in desperate needof a transplant. It took a dedicated team ninehours to perform the operation.Succumbing to pneumonia, Washkansky

only lived for 18 days after the operation. The theatre where this transplant was per-

formed has been turned into a museum inhonour of these pioneers of medicine, and toDarvall and Washkansky. In a first for the African continent, Durban

will next year host the World TransplantGames.Competitors from some 55 countries are ex-

pected to compete inwhat is the single biggestorgan donor awareness event on the planet. This, in itself, is a celebration of the human

spirit. Their tenacity and strength of charac-ter bear testimony to true grit. The Games should bring together up to

1 500 participants.Since its 1978 creation, the World Trans-

plant Games Federation has sought to createincreased awareness of the need to donate or-gans and to promote the success of organtransplant through sport across the world.Barnard’s skill is now history, but the

shortage of adequate donors is aworrying fac-tor. The first heart transplant was gift to theworld of medicine. The selflessness of organ donors is a gift to

any other human on the face of this earth. That is the first step to being commendable.

There is no higher accolade or honour.

. Our youth, our precious future, can makesuch a fantastic, innovative and creative con-tribution economically by using their poten-tial and ability tomake a better life for all. Butwhat do theydo?Theygive consent to thedeviland mess up their lives with iniquity.

. I think women should be encouraged tobreastfeed their babies and don’t see the prob-lem with doing it in public. Why do you haveto plan your feeding to please someone else?Breastfeeding is the best start to your child’sdevelopment. Pearl

. As a mother and a general practitioner, Isee nothing wrong with breastfeeding any-where, any time. There is nothing better thanbreastmilk for one’s baby. Those people whosuggest scheduled feeding need to take into ac-count that breastmilk is easily digested andtheywill need to feed every two to three hours.Breastfeeding is every mother and baby’sright – if they so choose – and they deserve tobe able to do so wherever and whenever theyhave to. Ruve Gallow

. There is nothing wrong with breastfeed-ing in public. I do, but I covermy breast beforetaking it out. As for having a routine: do youstick to your eating times, even in an emergen-cy?

. When babies need to feed, they need tofeed. They don’t ask when, where or how. Ifbreastfeeding is done in a decentmanner, whyshould people get offended? If mothers can’tbreastfeed their babies in public, then peopleshouldn’t be allowed to eat in public.

. There is nothing wrong with breastfeed-ing in public, as long as you cover up. I ex-pressed and bottle-fed my baby in public, butafter a week he refused to drink from the bot-tle. The nurse at the clinic said he was con-fusedwith the nipples. So I opted to breastfeedin public if needed. I will only put him backon a bottle once I go back to work. Fatima

. I hope anti-public breastfeeders don’t eatin public when hungry – to the point of faint-ing.Mothers sometimes get delayed before thenext feed. As long as they cover up!

IAMdisappointed that a leading bankdoesnot provide IsiXhosa as a language optionat its ATMs in the Western Cape.My comment follows after months of

public debate around the Draft South Afri-can Language Users Bill. The Bill, whichwill be tabled before the National Assem-bly later this year, proposes that positivemeasures be implemented to promote pre-viously marginalised languages, such asIsiXhosa, as per Article 6(2) of the coun-try’s Constitution. And Article 5 of the Constitution of the

Western Cape determines English, Afri-kaans and IsiXhosa as the official languag-es of the Western Cape, while Article 6(3)of the country’s Constitution expresses theprinciple of regional languages. The private sector should be encouraged

to develop language policies which take in-

to account the language circumstances oflocal communities. It makes business sense to serve one’s

client in his or her mother tongue or lan-guage of choice which in theWestern Capewill predominantly be English, Afrikaansor isiXhosa. It does not make sense to provide Zulu

and Tswana as a choice and not IsiXhosawhich is currently the case in some in-stances.I intend writing to the regional manage-

ment of local banks to make them awareof the Western Cape Language Policy andto encourage them to develop language pol-icies which promote respect for the diver-sity of this province and its languages, andin particular isiXhosa.DR IVAN MEYERMinister of Cultural Affairs and Sport

THE editor’s column in People’s Post is avery good read, with content that makessense and is written with unique informa-tion and wonderful insight. My opinion about the articles is that Fer-

reader commented on the column. I thinkshemust be living in an upmarket commu-nity with a similar job as the editor. Shewas just out of her depth to slander the edi-tor in a simple manner. Discrediting peo-

COOKING UP A STORM: People came out in their numbers to help cook food for the poor onSaturday night. As Ramadan drew to a close, Nakhlistan began their hard work to provide a hotmeal for 65 000 people on the day of EidulFitr on Sunday. According to Nakhlistan’s FatimaAllie, they cooked 151 130litre pots of food which was distributed to needy communities aroundthe province. Photo: Laila Majiet

Table tennis crisis talks failTTableable tennistennis crisiscrisis talkstalks failfailLIAM MOSES

THE future of a suspended national tabletennis coach has been left hanging in thebalance after mediated crisis talks withWestern Province Table Tennis failed tosolve a long running dispute.

Greg Naik, a former Western Province,Boland and national table tennis coach wassuspended in July for “bringing the game in-to disrepute” after the provincial body filedcharges against him.

Naik, who is also chairperson and founderof Boundary Table Tennis Club in Bonte-huewel, was subsequently banned from thegame for two years, but insists that the banis illegal and contravenes the WP Table Ten-nis constitution.

He responded by hiring lawyers and ap-

proaching the Western Province Sport Coun-cil (WPSC) and Western Province Depart-ment of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) forhelp (“Keeping mum on table tennis coach”,People’s Post, 14 August).

Last Tuesday, Naik met with Kelvin Smith,vice-chairperson and acting chairperson ofWP Table Tennis; Bennett Bailey, the deputydirector of client and scientific support atDCAS; Dave Roberts, chairperson of theWestern Province Council of Sport, and sev-eral other officials.

Bailey says no solution was found in themeeting because neither party was willing tobudge on their stance. “It’s like a negotiation, there is give and take. But if no-one wants togive and everyone wants to take then we arenot going to move,” says Bailey.

“The club didn’t move, because they wereof the opinion that Mr Naik did nothing

wrong and they need him at the club, becausethey rely heavily on him. The executive com-mittee (of WP Table Tennis) felt that theyneed to carry out the decision of the generalcouncil.”

Bailey says WPSC and DCAS have now dis-engaged themselves from the issue and willplay no further role for the immediate future.

Although no solution or decision wasreached in the meeting, Smith says he is hap-py with the result.

“They looked at our constitution and ourdisciplinary procedures. They looked verycritically at the steps that we followed andthey were happy that we followed all of theprocedures as per the constitution,” saysSmith.

“WP are happy with the meeting and we arevindicated by the comments of DCAS. We fol-lowed procedure to the letter. DCAS has prov-

en that we have followed everything correct-ly. So the ball is now in Mr Naik’s court.”

Naik, however, says the meeting is just thefirst part of an ongoing process.

“After the meeting, WP are spreading therumour that they are upholding the suspen-sion. What I understood was that the SportsCouncil wants call a meeting with me,” saysNaik.

“They said this is just the first part of theprocess. The next part will still happen. Theydidn’t uphold the suspension. They just saidthat we are closing the meeting until furthernotice.”

The former SA coach will now approach theWestern Cape Sport Arbitration Forum, as hewas advised to do at the meeting. UnlikeDCAS and WPSC, the Forum does have theauthority to either overturn or uphold Naik’sban.

AS the opening rounds of the EngenKnockout Challenge kicks tomor-row, the tournament has alreadycaptured the attention of talentscouts around the country.

Since its inception in 2003 thepopulartournament has served as a platformfor hundreds of players under the ageof 17 to prove they have what it takesto progress to the professional ranks ofSouth African football. The current crop of talented Cape

Town youngsters will have their oppor-tunity to prove themselves when thetournament finals takeplace inSeptem-ber and, according to tournament direc-tor Gilbert Kruger, they will bewatched by several representativesfrom professional teams.“I don’t want to put pressure on play-

ers by giving their names, but if I lookat some of the players there seems to bea nice crop coming through who couldbe noticed by the professional clubs,”says Kruger.“I have already been inundated with

requests from scouts and professionalclubs who are asking for accreditationto come to the tournament, becausethey know this is the area where theycould possibly find players.”The Challenge has already assisted

some of Cape Town and South Africa’smost talented players on their way toupper echelons of football.Former Ajax Cape Town and current

Supersport United midfielder GeorgeMaluleka, AjaxAmsterdamandBafanaBafana attacker Thulani Serero andSantos players Tasleem Paulse and Zai-ron van Beulen all made a name for

themselves at the Challenge.Besides acting as proving ground for

local talent, it also assists in developingyoung Cape Town footballers in otherways. Each one of the 16 teams that will

compete in the finals in September willreceive training equipment or a cashprize, regardless of where they finish, and all the teams play the same amountof games. The format of the competition means

the teams play against the strongestcompetition available locally.“Once you play against the last six-

teen teams you are playing against thebest teams in Cape Town. You obvious-ly have to be a bit better, and a bit moreorganised,” says Kruger.“It gives players the opportunity to

play against teams such as Ajax andVasco, who they don’t usually get toplay.“Here you are going to play against

the best 16 teams in the region, so youare already playing at a higher levelcompared to playing your normal LFAgame.”This week 96 teams will start their

journey to the finals of the competition, when they face off in the openingrounds of the tournament. The first matches were set to take

place over weekends, but waterloggedpitches meant that the games could nottake place.Unlike similar youth tournaments all

teams must qualify for the finals of thecompetition and the participating sidesrange from small, newly establishedteams to junior teams from profession-al clubs and academies.

Heideveld stayed inthe second-last place.Portlandswas thebiggest climber onthe league table, moving from sev-enth position to fourth, after a com-prehensive 4-1 victory over Belgra-via.Lentegeur, who held fourth place atthe start of the round, dropped downto fifth after their 3-1 loss to Rock-

NEWLY PROMOTED National First Divi-sion (NDF) side Milano United are sweat-ing the outcome of a meeting which willdetermine whether they can play theirhome games at Rooikrans Sports Com-plex.

The Grassy Park-based side have played atthe field since their formation in 1986, butmay now be forced to move away if otherclubs based at field object to it being used forprofessional football.

The club’s officials will meet with repre-sentatives from the other sporting codeswhich are played at the field, such as baseballand cricket, tomorrow to work out a solution.

Nasief Brenner, Milano’s owner, says mov-ing the club away would hurt the team andits passionate supporters.

“We are here for over 20 years; it’s ourhome. I don’t think it would be fair to the com-munity to move us. We are using local playersfrom Grassy Park and Lavender Hill,” saysBrenner.

“Also to take it away from the supporterswould be unfair. The supporters come froma disadvantaged background, so to ask themto travel to Philippi or Wynberg is a burdenon them.”

Milano were promoted after winning theWestern Cape Vodacom League and then fin-ishing second the national promotion play-offs in Polokwane in July.

Brenner adds that the team needs commu-nity support for it to continue its climb up theSouth African football ladder.

“We need to play here for our community.Like with Chippa United, they did great inPhilippi because they were communitybased.

“You are nothing without your commu-nity, just another individual. We are Mi-lano from Grassy Park. Not Milano fromWynberg or Philippi.”

Milano have already received the go-ahead from the league, but are still in con-sultation with the City of Cape Town to useRooikrans. The final decision will be madeif they receive the permission of the otherclubs at Rooikrans.

Should the team stay at in Grassy Park, they will need to upgrade the facility byadding showers and making other minorchanges before the NDF conducts a final in-spection of the field at the end of the month.

Tandeka Gqada, Mayoral Committeemember for Community Services, says theCity is concerned that Milano’s request forexclusive use of the A-field and the hall atRooikrans, every second week, would beunfair to other codes using the facility.

“This restricts the use of the hall by thebroader community for functions and otherrecreational activities. As this is a communityfacility we would be hard-pressed to defend oneclub using this hall and field on an exclusivebasis every second week,” says Gqada.

“Secondly they requested facilities which arecurrently being used as a first aid room anddrug testing cubicle by the baseball and dartscodes, to be converted into a referee’s room. Inaddition to all these requirements they also re-quire a tunnel, which the facility does nothave.”

Brenner says Milano will be forced to moveto the Wynberg Military base, a venue whereother Premier Soccer League and NDF sideshave played in the past, should the other sport-ing codes vote against their stay.

The City has suggested that Milano use eitherPhilippi, Vygiekraal or Athlone stadium fortheir games.
