TINA BURGER ANDTASMIN CUPIDO

Think two beers at a water-ing hole will still leaveyou perfectly capable of

driving?That extra cold one could

lead to you spending six yearsin the slammer or overR100 000 poorer. As the silly season approach-

es, Law Enforcement and Traf-fic Services are out in full forcein an attempt to keep thestreets safe and free of drunkdrivers. In a bid to reduce the road

carnage, a call has been madeto reduce the alcohol limit inline with international stand-ards.

One drink too manyThe legal limit in South Africa for breath

alcohol content is 0.24mg per 1000ml or ablood alcohol limit of 0.05g per 100ml.In literal terms, this equals two thirds of

a beer or spirit cooler with 5% alcohol con-tent; 75ml of red orwhitewine perhourwithan alcohol content of 12% to 14%; and up toone 25ml tot of alcohol per hour for whiskeyor brandy drinkers. Two drinks in one hour will more than

likely put you over the legal limit. The Automobile Association of South Af-

rica (AA) continues to lobby for the bloodalcohol concentration limit to be brought inline with world standards, says spokesper-son Graeme Scala.“The crisis on South Africa’s roads de-

mands a tougher approach. The AA has forsome time proposed that the 0.05% limit bereduced to 0.02%,” he says.“This allows some leeway formedications

that contain alcohol, but still emphasisesthat one alcoholic drink puts you over thelimit. A blood alcohol limit of 0.02% meansthat drinking even one beerwith 4%alcoholper volume will put an individual over thelimit.”Should you be caught driving under the

influence of alcohol you could face up to sixyears in prison or be slapped with a fine ofup to R120 000.

A lesson learntTwo years of court appearances and thou-

sands in legal fees taught one driver to steerclear of taking to the road after hitting thebottle. The man, who was arrested for driving

under the influence three years ago, says hedrove into a roadblock after leaving a party. After initial questioning, he was asked to

step out of his vehicle. “The officer instruc-ted me to phone someone to collect my car

as I would need to accompanythemtoa testing centre forbloodsamples. I spent that night in theholding cells at a police station,”he recalls. The next day hemade his first

of many court appearances.“Over the next two years I had

a court appearance each month;with each appearance the law-yer I appointed charged up toR1500,” he says.“The case was postponed for

several reasons, including a de-lay in the results of the bloodtests, as well as a change in theState prosecutor.”The case was finally closed

and he was sentenced to 250hours of community service. “Iam still doing the time for myunnecessary actions; it is some-thing I will never subject myself

or my family to again,” he says. “This wasnot only an expensive eye-opener for me,but also for my friends and family.”Scala says evidentiary breathalyser

printouts are admissible as evidence incourt. “If jail terms were handed down fordrinking and driving, the public would be-come more sensitised to the issue,” he says.“Drivers who ensure they are sober will

have nothing to fear, but those who drinkwill be removed from the roads before theycan cause harm.”

Think before you drinkTraffic Services spokesperson Richard

Coleman says every driver has a responsi-bility when they drink alcohol and plan todrive. “If you have used any substancewhich could affect your driving ability, letsomeonewhohasnot had adrinkdrive yourvehicle. If no one is available, call a lift ser-vice company,” he urges.

A vacant piece of land in Manenberg is sto-king the ire of residents fed-up with it beingused as a getaway route, dumping site andthe burning of copper. The plot is nestled between homes in

Towerkop and Kareedou streets, and has foryears been an eyesore and fire hazard, localssay.Margaret Janse, a backyard dweller, says

her property is the only one without a fence, making her more vulnerable to fires andcriminals.“If a fire starts my house will be the first

one to go up in flames.Who is going to repayme then?” she asks.Of major concern to Janse are the ele-

ments lurking around the overgrown land.“For five weeks in a row, we have been

catching people cutting wires or runningthrough here with stolen goods,” she says.“When will it end?”Jeffrey Lewis, who lives opposite the site,

says he is tired of his complaints falling ondeaf ears.“I have complained somany times to coun-

cil and police about the dumping and thecrime, yet nothing is being done. OnWednesdays they come and collect our dirt, but by the evening someone would havedumped on that land already,” he says.Nina Heuvel echoed her neighbours’ con-

cerns, saying that just two weeks ago she

caught a man who had climbed a pole to cutthe wires.“People dump and use this land for crimi-

nal activity but no one seems to care,” shefumes.Lieutenant Ian Bennett, spokesperson for

Manenberg police, confirms that the spothas been known as a hotspot used by crimi-

nals. “They see it as an easy escape route andat night it is difficult to see them,” he says.Ward councillor Junade Hoosain says the

City of Cape Town is in the process of sub-di-viding the property. “We are in the processof transferring the land and sub-dividing itso that each of the adjacent property ownersget a portion. This will immediately prevent

people from gaining access,” he says. While council has agreed to close off the

area, Hoosain says for now the propertyowners have agreed to erect their ownboundary walls. He also calls on residents to directly con-

tact the police with any complaints of crimi-nal activity.

FIRE HAZARD: Margaret Janse stares at the remains of burnt dirt and rubble on the problem plot off Towerkop and Kareedou streets.

The arts and craft club at St Johns theEvangelist in Belgravia Road, Craw-ford, will be hosting their annual exhi-bition in the church hall on Saturday9 November between 10:00 and 15:00.Entry is R10. A variety of items in-

‘Whites only’advert irks

The South African Human Rights Com-mission is investigating a Cape Townjob advertisement only seeking whites

as applicants. The Commission says this comes after re-

cruitment agency Quest posted a job advertstating only white males need apply.

The advert sparked a flurry of outrage onsocial media sites, with Quest being accusedof racism. Quest denied these accusations, saying clients decide the job requirements.

The Commission said it was also investi-gating another advert, “Algemene Werker;slegs blankes”, adding it condemns such ad-vertising. Here is what readers had to say.

BRIAN KOCK says the advert is reminiscent of theold South Africa. “I don’t understand why theyshould say ‘only white’ or even ‘black’. I can’t thinkof anything a white male can do that I can’t.”

RADE MAKHUVHA doesn’t think the advert is racist. “I’ve seen lots of job advertisements sayingthey are only looking for a black male. I ignorethem and look for something I’m qualified for.”

VELISWA QALO says it would not have elicited thesame reaction if the vacancy was for a black male.“I am over apartheid, but many will find it offensive when they see such an advertisement. Theyare still living in the past, not knowing that theyare doing the same thing.”

ZAIN GALLIE believes racism is still a problem inour modern society. “We don't have equal rights. What counts for one person should count for another. When I see an advertisement like that I feelcriticised, ashamed and like I have no place in thisworld.”

FABIAN HENDRICKS says he feels offended whenhe sees such an advert. “It should depend on whatqualifications one has and not on one’s skin colour. It’s racist and I don't like it.”

NICKY DAMON says he is offended by the advert.“We all deserve a fair chance. Focus on qualification, not race. We are over apartheid. To me theadvert was racist. I’m happy they removed it.”

MONIQUE SWART says she deals with these kindof adverts almost every day. “For me the advertwas racist. I work with BEE and these are the kindsof things I deal with daily. Even if the advert wasabout blacks, people were going to raise questions.”

The Voice of the Cape’s annual SummerFestival has found a new home at Vy-gieskraal Stadium in Athlone.

This year’s festival, which takes placefrom Thursday 5 to Sunday 8 December,is themed Celebrating 91.3fm to mark theradio station’s long-awaited move to anew daily, independent frequency.People’s Post is the print media partner

of this event. The festival attracts between 30 000 to

50 000 visitors every year and is the big-gest community festival on the social cal-endar.

After six years at the Cape Market inEpping, the move to Vygieskraal hasbeen welcomed. The new venue is not on-ly central in location, but is situated inthe heart of where VOC’s listenership re-sides. Vygieskraal Stadium is on the pub-lic transport route, making it accessibleto a large group of festivalgoers who use

public transport.Festivalgoers can expect a weekend of

fun-filled activities such as musical per-formances, sports tournaments, funrides and a tea garden.

A variety of delectable food will be onoffer and flea market lovers can find eve-rything they need at the souk stalls.

There is also a corporate exhibition, where shoppers can find innovative newproducts. The set-up of the festival willbe completely different this year, allow-ing stallholders to receive equal expo-sure.

This year’s festival will have a huge fo-cus on sports and enthusiasts can lookforward to cricket, rugby and soccertournaments, which exposes up-and-coming sporting talent.

Almost 100 new neighbourhood watch pa-trollers have taken to the streets of Athloneto combat petty crime ahead of the festiveseason. And eight volunteer crime-fighting or-

ganisations have joined forces to make agreater impact.Athlone Community Policing Forum

chairperson Aziza Kannemeyer says theBridgetown, Kewtown, Belgravia, ParkTown, Statice Heights, Bokmakierie, Gar-landale andOlivedalewatches have decidedto collaborate to show criminals they meanbusiness.A collective effort increases the number

of eyes and feet on the streets, she explains. This, Kannemeyer says, is an advantage

especially to smaller neighbourhoodwatch-es.“Our main aim is for people to realise the

area belongs to them and not the criminals. When neighbourhood watches are active inan area it acts as an effective crime deter-rent. Therefore we are calling on more peo-ple to join the groups in their area,” shesays. After being dormant for some time, Kan-

nemeyer says the neighbourhood watcheshave been reenergised and are growing bythe day.“In the last two months, we have trained

between 70 and 90 newmembers,” she says, adding that the watches are being encour-aged to increase their ranks even more.Kannemeyer says the volunteers will be

conducting group patrols every weekend

and will focus on the areas with the highestcrime rate.“Each neighbourhood watch first patrols

their own area, then we meet up and drivein convoy through other areas. If need be,we go on foot patrols,” she says.Athlone police station commander Colo-

nel Krisjan Verwant says with the festiveseason approaching, the additional pres-ence of neighbourhood watches are a greathelp. “InAthlone our officers, LawEnforce-ment, Metro Police, traffic services andneighbourhood watches have a very goodworking relationship. We rely on eachotherto improve our communities,” he says.Mayoral Committee member for Safety

and Security JP Smith joined the group ontheir walkabout last weekend. He says neighbourhood watches act as a

major crime deterrent.“In incidents of house robbery and break-

ins, the largest contributor to communitysafety is neighbourhood watches. However,it is still important for people to report allincidents of crime,” Smith says.He further comments that areas with the

highest crime rates have the lowest numberof complaints logged and areas with a lowcrime rate log complaints regularly.“We often only hear of crime in an area

once someone has died but we don’t hear ofthe incidents leading up to it. There is a100% mismatch between the crime rate ofsome areas and the number of complaintslogged in that area. Inspiring people to be the change they wantto see in their communities is what an Ath-lone-based movement is doing.

Reconstructed Living Lab (RLabs) is a reg-istered social media enterprise aiming toprovide a platform for community driven in-novation.

This creative hub is situated in TarentaalRoad, Bridgetown, and endeavours to edu-cate people with technology skills training

they can utilise to implement changes withintheir neighbourhoods.

RLabs has an innovation incubation pro-gramme for social entrepreneurs and pro-vides seed funding for cellphone and assortedtechnology entrepreneurs.

Craig Dumont, one RLabs director, saysthe nine-month programme is designed toprovide people with a shared space to developtheir ideas and ventures with support fromexperienced developers and entrepreneurs.“We select ordinary members from commu-nities who have an idea that could bring

about social change,” hesays. “Once they have thenecessary technology skillstraining, they can use it totrain other people or start abusiness.”

All business ideas in theincubation programme aredeveloped and tech-orien-tated so participants canaccess them via phones orcomputers.

“We aim to provide theeasiest way for people to ac-cess information that couldchange or improve theirlives,” Dumont adds.

RLabs recently intro-duced five new start-upbusiness ventures whichwere successfully devel-oped during the nine monthprogramme.

These businesses operatein the form of an internetapplication programme and are accessiblethrough Mxit or mobisites.

TalentSpark is one of the five fledglingbusiness apps developed by Athlone resi-dents Jason Martin and Nathaniel Dicks. This tool enables people to connect withothers and find opportunities to developtheir entertainment talents.

VListo started by Nicole Sands and LisaBrand allows consumers to share the pric-es of goods that they regularly buy, andhelps them to find product/service solu-tions that are more affordable and conven-ient. DevTraders is a start-up that focuseson the empowerment of informal tradersand was created by Suzanne Smith and

Wendy Jeffries to help informal tradersgrow their business online.

Cinemo is for film lovers, producers andactors and was created by Shane Vermootento provide a platform to share content.

The last of the five apps, Hack Valley, wascreated by Gary Saaiman and is an app forandroid phones allowing users to find differ-ent solutions for a host of problems. For ex-ample, if organisations or groups would liketo find a solution to a funding issue, theywould post it on the app and are then ableto access a variety of solutions posted by peo-ple from different backgrounds.V For more information on the applications or RLabsvisit www.rlabs.org.

Commuters are questioning the implemen-tation of Metrorail’s new timetable, whichcomes into effect later this month. The State’s rail agency plans to amend the

weekday roster of its current Southern andCentral lines to a frequency-based service. This will result in changes to the timeta-

ble affecting the Cape Flats to Cape Town,Simon’s Town to Fish Hoek, Fish Hoek toCape Town, Chris Hani to Cape Town, Ka-pteinsklip to Cape Town and Bellville viaBishop Lavis to Cape Town lines.Breaks of between 10 and 30 minutes dur-

ing peak hours will be applied to these sta-tions.Metrorail spokesperson Riana Scott says

commuters have been advised since Sep-tember to familiarise themselves with the

newroster throughvarious communicationchannels. “The implementation date is ex-pected later this month,” she says.Further details of the scheduled changes

will be announced at a later stage, Scott con-firms.According to Metrorail’s website, the

timetable is being redesigned by interna-tional rail experts and is an integral part ofthe transport service’s national efficiencyplan. The information on thewebsite states:“The international team has helped to re-vise the current stop-patterns and improvethe connections. The frequency-basedschedule is user-friendlywith regular inter-vals during and outside peak periods. It of-fers up to 28% more capacity.”The timetable will come into action once

all accelerated infrastructure improve-ments have been completed.

It’s not about whether there is adequateland, but whether there is enough money. This was the reaction of theWestern Cape

Department ofHumanSettlements to allega-tions that the department does not use theland available for housing. These allegationsweremade lastWednes-

day during a chaotic protest led by AndileLili in the city centre.

Bruce Oom, spokesperson for provincialhousing minister Bonginkosi Madikizela, ex-plained that the department receives a “limit-ed budget” from national government, whichis then channelled to municipalities. He said land cannot summarily be devel-

oped without enough money.Lili has alleged there is land in the vicinity

of Canal Walk which Transnet had madeavailable for development, but that the de-partment did not want to use it.

Oom said the department does not knowof such an offer, and neither the depart-ment nor theminister can respond to suchvague statements. “Should we get a specif-ic address or erf number, we would havea clear answer,” Oom said.Lili and the parade’s other leader Loyiso

Nkohla was part of a group who met withMadikizela on 10 October when it wasagreed a revised memorandum would beprovided.“But nothing was supplied,” Oom said.He continued that land around Cape

Town is scarce, and much of it cannot be

developed as it is prone to flooding or thereare already many people occupying it, mak-ing it difficult to relocate them.Madikizela last week said he understood

some protesters have legitimate grievances.“My department is committed to solve it,

butwe cannot have political agendas detract-ing from the issues,” he said. “The fact thatthe leaders of the previous march failed tosupply my office with a memorandum withmore information in spite of an undertakingto do so and instead threatened to ‘bring thecity centre to a halt’, indicates this is nothingmore than political posturing.”

Hebattles towheel himself through the sandand stones to get to the self-made, carpet-covered “ramp” leading to the rickety frontdoor of his wendy house.Brandon Roland forges on, bravely veer-

ing through obstacles to make it home.He is one of thousands of disabled people

living in dire and unsuitable conditions, pa-tiently waiting to reach the top of the hous-ing waiting list. And despite wheelchair-bound applicants

being given priority status, activists say toolittle is being done to grant the disabledtheir right to suitable housing.Roland has been on the list for 11 years

and although he refuses to “sit back andwait for a handout”, the meagre wage hemakes as an assistant in a fish tackle shopwill never be enough to secure him a bond.“Asa father, Iwant toprovide formy fami-

ly,” he says, tickling his eight-month-olddaughter. “But being in awheelchair is a se-rious disadvantage. Council claims to prior-itise the needs of the disabled, but those arejust emptywords. I would like nothingmorethan to be self-sufficient, but this wheel-chair is standing in my way of earning afixed salary and buying my own house.”His tiny, neat home has been burgled

countless times by opportunistic thieveswho know he would be unable to put up afight.“I have nowhere else to go. I have come

a long way from living in a squatter camptowhere I am today. But Iwantmore formy-self and my family. I don’t want to die here, still waiting for my reference number to becalled.”

The waiting gameAtotal of 3 313 disabledpeople fromacross

the city are currently on the housing wait-ing list, confirmsMayoral Committee mem-ber for Human Settlements TandekaGqada. These applicants need to be registered as

wheelchair-bound to be prioritised.“Throughregistration theywill be consid-

ered part of the special needs category andmay qualify on a priority basis for housingprojects as per theCity’s allocationspolicy,”she says.“We are committed to being a caring city

and therefore do all we can to build a metrowhere those who need help receive it to im-prove their living environments.”Candidates have to be classified as disa-

bled on the housing needs database.A doctor’s certificate or other official doc-

umentation is needed for registration.Gqada says council makes provision for

the disabled during the construction ofcouncil accommodation through a specialneeds category, which includes the buildingof disabled-friendly units.

Carrying onBut while council claims to be mindful of

the needs of the disabled, Abduraghman Sa-lie (53) rubbishes this.He waited 20 years to move into his coun-

cil home – amaisonette which requires himto find his way up a steep staircase to getfrom the downstairs bathroom to his bed-room.“I either have to get up very early so that

my sons can carry me before they leave forwork or slither like a snake down thestairs,” he explains. He waited two decades for the call from

council that a home has been allocated tohim.“When I discovered it was a two-storey

house, I still took it. I had waited so manyyears and I didn’t want this opportunity topass me by. My family had been living indire conditions for too long; I put my needsaside so that they could have four walls tocall home.”He has since applied for a wheelchair-

friendly house but knows there may still bea long wait ahead.“I should never have been in this situa-

tion in the first place. It’s hard enough beingin a wheelchair, but its even more difficultwhen you are further disempowered by de-pending on others for mobility.”

Mum’s the wordTessa Willemse has made it her lifelong

goal to teach her son independence. But her efforts are somewhat in vain as

the teenager relies on family members tocarry him through the sandy stretch thatleads from their tiny wendy house to theirfront gate before he can use his wheelchair.

She has to pick up her almost adult sonto allow him to relieve himself in a bucket,as they do not have access to a proper toiletand cannot afford to spend hundreds ofrands on adult diapers. In the decade she has been on the waiting

list, she has made every effort to make hersmall home as wheelchair-friendly as possi-ble.But she still prays and dreams of moving

her son into a house where he can learn tobe self-sufficient.“I don’t know what more I can do,” she

says, close to tears.“I have been to housing offices, the civic

centre in Cape Town and countless meet-ings. But no matter what I do, all the doorsare slammed in my face.”Until her dream of a wheelchair-friendly

house is realised, she will continue to makeevery effort to make life as easy as possiblefor the 17-year-old.“Some might think it would be easier to

put him in a special care home, but I couldnever do that. He is my son.”

Short end of the stickDespite government’s claims of building

an inclusive society, wheelchair-bound peo-ple continue to be overlooked, argues Disa-bledPeople of SouthAfrica provincial secre-tary Anthony George.“Handing over the keys to a mainstream

council home doesn’t cut it,” he insists.“I have seen people battling in the space

they are supposed to feel most comfortable, depending on their families or neighboursto help them get in and out of their homes.

They are forced to forfeit their independ-ence for a house that doesn’t even allowthem to move around freely.”A more intimate understanding of the

challenges facing wheelchair-bound citi-zens is needed to ensure the disabled are notgiven the short end of the stick, George says.“No one stands up for us. Handing over

a monthly grant isn’t seeing to the needs ofour people – there needs to be input and con-sultation. How can a perfectly able-bodiedofficial make the call on what would be ac-cessible and comfortable for someone whocannot move their legs?”

Housing for allCape TownAssociation for the Physically

Disabled director Bridget van der Merwesays while universal accessibility in theconstruction of all housing would be ideal, there is still a long way to go before this isrealised.“But change is creeping in,” she says.

“General building standards are transform-ing towards allowing the disabledmore easein doing things like going to the toilet orswitching on the lights. While not perfect, these measures are seeing us move in theright direction.”But housing activist Sulyman Stellen-

boom says the process should be “drastical-ly speeded up” and government should bethe catalyst for change.“We all have equal rights so we should all

have equal opportunities, especially tobasicneeds such as housing. All avenues towardsempowering andgiving independence to thedisabled must be prioritised.”

The South African Social Security Agency(Sassa) has since the beginning of this yearconcluded about 840 investigations intocorruption in social grants.Hundreds of thousands of rands worth of

stolen money has also been recovered.More than 240 Sassa staff have also been

prosecuted for corruption and fraud. These successes were announced earlier

this week during Sassa’s first anti-corrup-tion conference.Sassa CEO Virginia Peterson says since

the introduction of the biometric system inMarch, they received 1 800 cases of corrup-tion and fraud. The cases already settled had a combined

monetary value of R4.5m.“The biometric grant payment systemus-

es the beneficiary’s fingerprints. Voice re-cordings are entered into a computer sys-tem to prevent allowances being paid to thewrong person,” Peterson explained.More than nine million people have been

registered in this way.Social development minister Bathabile

Dlamini said corruption and fraud are rifeboth in the department and at Sassa.“We are very concerned that most of the

corruption and fraud which has come tolight was committed by people appointed toserve the community. Sassa and depart-ment officials will, therefore, also be regis-tered on the biometric system in the nexttwo months,” Dlamini said.Thiswill allowemployees’ activities to be

tracked. She also said most fraudsters arrested so

far are women. The department is investigating a range

of possibilities to make monthly grant pay-outs easier and thus wipe out the chance offraud. “One of these is the possibility of per-sonally handing over pensioners’ allowanc-es,” she said. However, Dlamini says un-scrupulous money lenders and irregularburial schemes are currently the major ob-stacles for the department in their fightagainst poverty.

Strandfontein Football Club have can-celled plans to enter the professionalranks through purchasing a Safa Sec-

ond Division franchise. The club announced plans to buy a spot in

the third tier of South African football, fromnewly promoted club Knysna Bafana, at its35th anniversary celebrations in late Octo-ber. However, Strandfontein will no longercompete in the Second Division after negoti-ations between the club’s financial backersand Knysna Bafana were cancelled.Sharief Christians, junior chairmanat the

amateur club, confirms theywill not be play-

ing in the Second Division this year.“Wehave decided thatwe are going to con-

centrate on our youth,” he says.Christians, who would have taken up the

chief operations officer role at the profes-sional club, refused to give any further de-tailswhenquizzed aboutwhether thenegoti-ations broke down. His reasons for the withdrawal contradict

statements made in an earlier interviewwith People’s Post on Tuesday 29 October.During the first interview,Christians said

developing young players was the key rea-son for the buying the franchise. He said: “The core of the Second Division

team will be Strandfontein players. A lot ofour youngsters play in our Mitchell’s Plain

Local Football Association (MPLFA) SuperLeague team.”He also stated: “We think we have the

quality of players we need to survive. Theseboys are never given chances. Now we aregiving them a chance to show they can playat this level.”Strandfontein previously played in the

SecondDivision, but a lack of fundingmeantthe franchise was sold to Vasco da Gamaabout six years ago.The club had not yet secured a sponsor at

the time of Christians’ first interview withPeople’s Post, but he said the financial back-ing would come from a clubmember and hisbusiness partner, who were set to bankrollthe franchise purchase.

The franchise would have brought profes-sional football back to Mitchell’s Plain forthe first time since Santos FC left the MPL-FA earlier this year to join Cape DistrictLFA.Although Mitchell’s Plain United FC play

in theSecondDivision, the club is just a feed-er team for Santos and are based at the San-tos Academy in Lansdowne.Mitchell’s Plain is widely considered to by

a hotbed of football talent, but the lack of aprofessional club in the area could be to thedetriment of football development. While themost promisingplayerswill still

be cherry-picked from amateur sides whenspotted, the level of competition and coach-ing could suffer.

‘Beating the bullet with the ball’LIAM MOSES

@LiamCPT

A Hanover Park football club has fin-ished the seasonwithaglut of trophies, but its administrators believe an even

more important victory has been won.Hanover Park Rangers chairperson

Sedick Abrahams says the club has success-fully kept 180 boys and young men awayfrom the drugs and gangsterism whichplague the area.

He says Rangers have “beaten the bulletwith the ball”.

“We are battling with drugs and gan-sterism; there are killings in Hanover Parkeveryday,” Abrahams says.

“Sometimes we can’t even practice, (but)we are not even bothered with those gang-sters. The players are very dedicated. I start-ed the team tokeepkids away fromgangster-ism.”

“They love the game– even though the sea-son has finished the kids still want to play.”

The club was founded in 1976, but ran dor-mant 15 years later due to the difficulties ofoperating during apartheid.

Abrahams reopened the club in 2008 to of-fer the area’s children a healthy pastime andan outlet for their talent.

Rangers now have teams in every agegroup, ranging from under-7 to seniors.

Those teams claimed six different tro-phies playing in the Rygate Local FootballAssociation (LFA) this season.

Rangers beat 21 other teams from the Ryg-ate, Metropolitan and Turfhall LFA’s toclaim the combined under-19 league trophy.

The senior third team won the Rygatethird division first-round league, second-round league and grand challenge trophies, while the first team won the first divisionfirst-round and second-round league to gainpromotion to the Premier League, the topleague at Rygate.

Abrahams says the team achieved this inspite of the adversity and the stigma at-tached to living in Hanover Park.

“Weachieved thiswithdedication anddis-cipline,” he says.

“Everybody looks down on us, but weearned their respect. Last year they thoughtwe were a fly-by-night team; this year wewere the team to beat.

“Although our players come from thisbackground, we instil discipline into tothem, because we know people are lookingat us with hawk’s eyes.”

The Hanover Park area previously had itsown LFA and Abrahams says the next stepis to reform the organisation once anotherteam is established in the area.

Rangers do not charge their players anymembership fees and have to supply mostwith boots and shin guards.

Abrahams says the under-11 and under-13teams shared the same pairs of boots thisseason.

Although sponsorship has been providedby New Era Recruitment, Freedom RidersMotorcycle Club and Strings MotorcycleClub, the club is still in dire need of equip-ment.

Anyone interested in assisting can phoneAbrahams on 082 741 0750.
