Edward: A Photographer Who Takes Pic turesof Italian Arc hitec ture

    by And rea Cela uro

Photograp her and part of the university tea c hing fa c ulty,

    Edward Rozzo tea c hes c ritic ism of v isua l cultures a t Boc c oni. A

longtime Milano resident who was born and e duc a ted in theUnited Sta tes, he b rings a unique viewpoint to his lessons - and

he a lways enc ourag es his students to op en their eyes.

Ita ly is a c ountry full of c reative w orkers. It is, but it ha s a taste for self-celeb ration a nd an espe c ially

c onservative visua l culture. Edwa rd Rozzos opinion is perceptive, but it comes from someone who has lived

mo st o f his life in Milan, thoug h he wa s bo rn in New York and grad ua ted in Fine Arts with a ma jor inPhoto grap hy from the Rhode Island Sc hoo l of Design. Edwa rd therefo re knows Italy, along with its visua l and

ae sthet ic c ulture well. He worked first as a fa shion pho tog rapher and then a s an industry photo grap her forma ny years. His wo rk, the prod uc t o f inspiration o ver ma ny fields, has been exhibited in Milan , Turin, Florence ,

Verona and Franc e. He ha s also ta ught p hotog rap hy at the Aca de my of Fine Arts in Bergam o, the Europ ea n

Institute o f Design in Milan, and , in the ea rly 80s, was the c reato r of Brera Foto grafia at the Pinac ote c a d i

Brera. Tod ay his ac tivities include tea c hing c ritic ism o f visua l cultures for the Bac helor of Ec ono mic s and

Ma nag em ent in Arts, Culture a nd Co mmunic ation at Boc c oni.

His expe rienc e w ith pho tog raphy sta rted in the US, where his p rofessor at c olleg e w as Harry Ca llahan,

c onsidered o ne of the great innovato rs in America n pho tog rap hy. After grad uation in 1970 he move d to Italy.

In the ye ars when Italian fashion wa s be ing exported around the w orld, his ap proac h to Milan oc c urred

through wo rk as assistant to a photo grap her in the sec tor. But I go t tired of fa shion pretty q uickly, says

Edw ard, so I started do ing c orporate and industrial photo grap hy. In this sec tor, whe re he wo rked for lea ding

brands suc h as Pirelli, he b roug ht his eye for de ta il and the a tten tion to light ing tha t he used in fashion

pho tog rap hy. It wa s ab out c om munica ting the struc ture, the ethics and the vision of the co mp any through

imag es , he says, in an era w hen internet d id no t exist ma king the visibility of b usinesses different from tod ay .

There is less de ma nd fo r wo rk with c orpo rate p hoto grap hy these d ays be c ause of the w eb , while the re is mo re

de ma nd for vide o: Which requires very high qua lity, verging o n cinema tic q uality, with the ob jective ofexplaining no t just the p rod uc t, but a lso w ho m akes it and w hy.

Along with industrial pho tog raphy, he ha s seve ral pe rsona l projec ts. Rozzo has had exhibits at the Bienna le of

Photo grap hy in Turin, the C orrente Found at ion in Milan and the Alinari Museum of Photog raphy in Florenc e. In

1998 his wo rk Urge nt Stories wa s disp layed at t he e xhibition Un nouve au p aysag e hum a in a t the

Renc ontres Interna tiona les de la Photog raph ie in Arles, Franc e, w hile his exhibit Pensieri urbani wa s hosted a t

Ca ste llo Sforzesco in Milan in 1999-2000. And he s a lso ve ry invo lved in tea c hing. Betwe en 1982 and 1984 he

wa s asked b y the Direc tor of the Pinac otec a d i Brera to c rea te the Brera Fotog rafia p rojec t, then he ta ught a t

the Academy o f Fine Arts in Bergamo , at the IED in Milan and the Brussels Watson IBM Cente r forMa nage ment, where he he ld seve ral seminars on visua l c om munic a tion. La ter he worked in Switzerland a t the

Ec ole Suprieure d Arts Ap p liqus in Veve y. He has taught c ritic ism o f visua l culture a t Universit Boc c oni since

    2004.

In his c ourse o n Via Sarfa tti, Edwa rd enc ourag es stud ents to look op enly a t the wo rld surround ing the m. In the

c ollec tive imag ination, this op en-mind ed ness should a lso foc us on one o f the strengths of the c ount ry, the

presume d m astery of wha t is be au tiful and ta steful. We live in a comp letely visua l wo rld, bu t no one invests

more than a little bit of time lea rning visua l language , says the p hoto grap her. We are self-referential and

whe n w e see something from outside our c ulture, we think it is ug ly and wo rthless. I wo uld like to give stud ents

the too ls need ed to und erstand our world . Unde rstand ing who w e a re in pa rt through the imag es that w ec reate abo ut ourselves, som eth ing tha t is not a lways ea sy to d o, bec ause Italy is a c ount ry tha t is essentia lly

ignorant ab out visual c ulture. We are a lea ding c ountry in fashion a nd de sign, yet w e d on t expe riment. In

that sense, we a ren t op en to innova tion, we d rathe r follow the rules . And a nyone w ho d oesnt fo llow the

rules is shut o ut . He ad ds, Italy has thousands of excellent reasons to b e proud of itself, but sometime s this

self-c elebration c louds our judg ment .

Then there s the soc iety of online soc ial networks, with millions of ve ry low -qua lity photo grap hs and videos tha t

overloa d the w eb , which c ertainly do esnt help increase the level of culture o f be auty. But Ed wa rd is a

po ssibilist a bout this. Or rather he stresses how this change is neither c orrec t no r inc orrec t, bu t una voidab le. Just like lang uage s whic h constantly cha nge, Ita lian , for exam p le, is simply the vernac ular of Latin, the c ulture

of p hotog rap hy with the rand om shots that be ga n w ith soc ial networks is just a transformation of the high

langua ge of photog rap hy. In the end , a ba ttle b etwee n those w ho wa nt to hold onto tradition and those w ho

take pa rt in the transforma tion is not ne w . Tha t s one of the rea sons Edwa rd do es not te ac h the history of

pho tog rap hy in his Boc c oni c ourse, but instea d the history of the e volution o f taste . The d ifference ma y b e

sub tle, but within tha t d ifferenc e is the visua l culture p rofe ssors whole messag e.

An Ethical Projec t and a Winning I-DEAby Davide Ripam onti

Four Boc c oni Ma ster of Sc ienc e students plac ed sec ond in the

business c ontest launc hed by AIDDA. Their p rop osa l presented

an o rig ina l and multid isc iplinary idea in soc ia l enterprise,

focusing on how to fac e the p rob lem o f disad vantag ed

    youths.

An ethic al restaurant, choo sing its loc at ion, which p roduc ts to serve to c lients, the p ersonne l, and ho w

Ma nag ers (AIDDA) and targete d at stude nts from Bac helor and Ma ster programs from all dep artments at

    ma jor Italian universities.

The c onte st , says Paolo Fontana , a stude nt in the Master of Scienc e in Ec onom ics and Ma nag em ent ofPub lic Adm inistration a nd International Institutions, required us to p ropo se a n innovat ive idea to b e

de veloped in an e xisting c omp any or to build a new c omp any, which is wha t we d id. The impo rtant thing wa s

that it w as an original ide a . And the idea that Pao lo and his c lassma tes c am e up with wa s c ertainly original.

The te am included Desiree Ciampa , a Pub lic Adm inistration MSc stud ent as we ll, Lucio Santacroce

(Manage ment) and Luig i Guerra (Ac c ounting, Financial Ma nag eme nt an d C ontrol). Our ethic al restaurant is

ba sed on three key elements , explains Pao lo, pe op le-prod uc ts-environme nt. More spe c ifica lly, its ab out

employing young pe op le who are in diffic ult situations, suc h as ex-convicts or former drug ad d icts, use

produc ts from o rga nic farming or fair-trad e, or taken from land c onfisc ate d b y the ma fia. Even the loc ation ofthe restaurant should ha ve a low environme ntal impa c t . But the project do esnt end here. Even p rofits

organization tha t wo rks with disad vanta ge d youths to e armark proc eed s .

The w ork was very de ta iled , with lots of strateg ic p lanning, and it was recog nized on 31 January at the

Universit La Sapienza in Rome, with the Rec tor Luigi Frati and President o f AIDDA Laura Frati Guc c i attending.

Part of the aw ard fo r sec ond p lac e is a c ash prize o f 4,500 euros, and pa rt is a three-month internship to b e

The p rojec t therefore should b e p lac ed in the area of soc ial enterprise, which at Boc c oni is examined by

They follow ed different p aths, both p assing throug h Boc c oni, which led them to a c omm on land ing plac e.

Donato Nubile and Marco Co lomb o Bolla are both a c tors, tea c hers and ma nag ers for a p lay by Comp a gnia

For Donato, who is c urrently managing d irec tor of Camp o Tea trale, there wa s noth ing to forec ast his c aree r inthis field: I disc overed thea ter at a late a ge , towa rds the end of university, and almost a s a ga me. I never

Donato Nubile is now one of Ca mp o Tea trale s four pa rtners, one o f who m is Ma rc o Bolla, who had a

Tod ay Ca mp o Tea trale is one of the most impo rtant plac es of its kind in Milan, w hic h c ontinues to op erate

Ballet or Modern, As Long As Its Danc eby Davide Ripam onti

Ottavio Taddei, an Ec ono mic s and Soc ial Sc ienc es Boc c oni

see n from the inside . But it is an environment tha t is a lso full of

    opportunities.

He ha s wo rked with Riccardo Muti and PierAlli, at the Rome O pe ra House, in Mos e il Fa raone , and he

pe rformed in Romeo e G iulietta d irec ted by Ca rla Frac c i, also in Rom e. But he w as also on stage in front o f

After his first e xperience with d anc e, w hen his life c onsisted of c ontinuously running to c lass, stud ying fo r hours
