It goes withot saying that what IZOLYATSIA has achievedin 2011 is the direct prodct of the efforts of all thosewho have left a part of themselves in this process of

constrction. What nited s was or drive to create aspace where new possiilities cold emerge. What arethese new possiilities and why are they significant? We elieve that cltral spaces are essential for socialwell-eing and free thinking. These spaces allow fordifference to ecome something we strive towardsecase only throgh difference we may achieve a morest and self-aware society. Contemporary cltre is ameans of commnicating ideas, echanging informationand emotions. In many ways, cltre precedes allother considerations, economical, political and strictlysociological, ecase it speaks directly to the hman heart.Spporting contemporary cltre means spporting or

right to think, speak, act and e. Not only do we owe it toor society, t we owe it first and foremost to orselves.

I etend my warmest gratitde to all those who have eenpart of IZOLYATSIAs life in 2011: artists, volnteers, crators, engineers, constrction workers, or commnity, and of corse the rave and fearless IZO-team.

2012 offers s an opportnity to contine learning, creating and inspiring. We hope that the IZO-family willgrow in size and in strength.

powder drawings prodced on the IZOLYATSIA camps. For the gnpowder drawings, Cai worked closely withlocal artists, miners and volnteers to create the newpieces on canvas. The entire process was open and freeto the plic, and adience memers were ale to witnessan artist at work as well as eperience the ignition of thegnpowder drawings firsthand. People worldwide, incld-ing local commnity who missed this rare opportnity, were also ale to access the events live online throghthe ehiitions wesite.

The ehiition stems from the artists eperience this pastMay in the coal and salt mines of the indstrial Donassregion. Dring his visit, Cai descended 1040 meters

elow grond level and trekked more than 1000 meters inthe tnnel, mirroring the same rote the coal miners takeevery day. After his orney to the centre of the earth, ahike to the top of the IZOLYATSIA terrekon, roght Cai tothe height of 50 meters, where he cold admire the inds-trial city panorama. Ci Gu-Qig: 1040m Uguchronicles Cais dialoge with the local commnity andtheir history and cltre. His work seeks to epress thefate of people, specifically the once glorifiedlaorers of the lower class in a rapidly changing time. The ehiition also reveals new possiilities throghcontemporary art: y transforming waste into treasre,we inherit and practice the Socialist ideal: art for the

Titled Mumts Shuls, the gnpowder drawinginstallation depicted a total of 27 miners: 9 salt min-

ers from Artemsol in Soledar, and 18 coal miners fromOktyarskiy Rdnik. In the loies of each site, 18 localSocialist Realist artiststogether with Cai himselfsketched the portraits of the miners as they finishedtheir shifts and walked ot of the mines. The prodctionthen retrned to IZOLYATSIA, where the artists enlargedtheir images and volnteers helped carve the large-scalesketches into stencils. Finally, Cai spread different gradesand grains of gnpowder onto the canvases to achievedifferent visal effects, all the while carefl to preserve theessence and style of each artists sketch and the character-istics and ara of each miner.

The finished gnpowder drawings were monted on

frames identical to the ones sed to hold the portraits ofSoviet leaders in propaganda parades. They were lit withmining lamps that hng from the ceiling aove like stars, with a mond of coal spread across the gallery to the left, and a slope of salt to the right.

Salt, coal and gnpowder are all etracts from natre, yetalso simltaneosly accomplishments of or civilization.Throgh the transfigration of energy, each gnpowderdrawing in Mumts Shuls was orn. It repre-sented oth the radiance of life, as well as the nderlyingrisk and aniety in a miners occpation.
