PROCESSIONAL—“Holy, Holy, Holy” Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty! Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee: Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty, God in three Persons, blessed Trinity.

Holy, Holy, Holy! All the saints adore thee, casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea; Cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee, Who was, and is, and evermore shall be. Text: 11 12 12 10; Reginald Heber, 1783–1826, alt. Music: John B. Dykes, 1823–1876. Reprinted with permission under ONE LICENSE# A-718331 All rights reserved.

GLORIAGlory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

FIRST READING—Deuteronomy 4:32-34, 39-40Moses said to the people: “Ask now of the days of old, before your time, ever since God created man upon the earth; ask from one end of the sky to the other: Did anything so great ever happen before? Was it ever heard of? Did a people ever hear the voice of God speaking from the midst of fire, as you did, and live? Or did any god venture to go and take a nation for himself from the midst of another nation, by testings, by signs and wonders, by war, with strong hand and outstretched arm, and by great terrors, all of which the LORD, your God, did for you in Egypt before your very eyes? This is why you must now know, and fix in your heart, that the LORD is God in the heavens above and on earth below, and that there is no other. You must keep his statutes and commandments that I enjoin on you today, that you and your children after you may prosper, and that you may have long life on the land which the LORD, your God, is giving you forever.”

RESPONSORIAL—Psalm 33:4-5, 6, 9, 18-19, 20, 22Response: Blessed the people the Lord has chosen to be his own.

Upright is the word of the LORD, and all his works are trustworthy. He loves justice and right; of the kindness of the Lord the earth is full (R.)

By the word of the LORD the heavens were made; by the breath of his mouth all their host. For he spoke, and it was made; he commanded, and it stood forth. (R.)

See, the eyes of the LORD are upon those who fear him, upon those who hope for his kindness, To deliver them from death and preserve them in spite of famine. (R.)

Our soul waits for the LORD, who is our help and our shield. May your kindness, O LORD, be upon us who have put our hope in you. (R.)

RECESSIONAL—“Go Make of All Disciples”“Go make of all disciples.” We hear the call, O Lord, That comes from you, our Father, In your eternal Word. Inspire our ways of learning Through earnest, fervent prayer, And let our daily living Reveal you ev’rywhere.

Text: Matthew 28:19-20; Leon M. Adkins, 1896-1986, alt., © 1964, Abingdon Press Reprinted with permission under ONE LICENSE# A-718331 All rights reserved.

THE NICENE CREEDI believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

SECOND READING—Romans 8:14-17Brothers and sisters:For those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you received a Spirit of adoption, through whom we cry, “Abba, Father!” The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if only we suffer with himso that we may also be glorified with him.

GOSPEL—Matthew 28:16-20The eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had ordered them. When they all saw him, they worshiped, but they doubted. Then Jesus approached and said to them, “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.”

he Great Grouping will remain the same until summer of 2022, so “we just need a little patience... yeah, yeah!”

After several meetings with me, the clergy team, some staff and the councils of the Great Grouping with our Bishop and several of his staff, Bishop Zubik asked that we postpone Town Hall discussions and merger steps until next summer.

This means we are going to continue to follow Jesus as our pathway to heaven because He is Here! The Eucharistic Lord at Mass and in Adoration continues to be the place where our hearts can encounter Christ. So we will continue our life in the Great Grouping!

One of our Great Grouping members from the Valley asked, “When are they going to knock down our churches and take away Jesus from us?” Over my dead body will there be no presence of Jesus in our Valley community. This is not even on the table for discussion. And our community at Saints John & Paul will welcome the challenges ahead with growing families and opportunities for encountering Christ. Let us continue to vibrantly celebrate the sacraments and serve those most in need!

For now we are discerning what the Bishop calls the “ingredients” for a unified relationship between the two areas of our grouping (Franklin Park and Beaver Valley) or what is technically called a “Collaborative Two-Parish Model.” Since this type of relationship is new to our diocese we are gathering experience and data from other parts of the country and will add that to our collective Great Grouping experience.

We are asked to be patient, which makes me think of both the Guns n’ Roses song, and St. Paul’s Letter to the Ephesians:

“Just a little patience, yeah... Some more patience, yeah... I’ve been walking the streets at night, just trying to get it right... A little patience, yeah.”

“With all humility and gentleness, with patience, Bearing with one another through love, Striving to preserve the unity of the Spirit.”

his week’s second reading is the climactic section of the first half of St. Paul’s Letter to the Romans. Throughout this first half he has been describing condemnation, justification, sanctification, and glorification. We all have sinned (condemnation). We all have been offered grace and forgiveness because of Jesus Christ, the New Adam (justification). We all face the daily challenge to die and rise with Jesus, to battle our inner inclination to sin, and to grow in holiness (sanctification). Now St. Paul explains how we can also be glorified as children of God (glorification). This is the great progression from alienation from God to being brought into the heart of the Holy Trinity.

On this Trinity Sunday, it is fitting that the Spirit reminds us of our glorification as children of God in specifically trinitarian terms. Notice that we are not simply metaphorical children of an impersonal god. Because we are glorified as God’s children, we call God “Abba, Father,” an intimate term of endearment. The eternal Creator of all that exists is my Daddy. God the Father is my Father. God the Son is my brother, which is a simpler way of saying we are “joint heirs with Christ.” When my earthly dad eventually dies, I will be a joint heir of his estate along with my older sister and my younger brother.

“Joint heirs” is a legal term for siblings. Jesus Christ is legally my brother. God the Holy Spirit is the one who leads us, bears witness to our divine adoption, and in fact brings about that adoption. He is the “Spirit of adoption” that makes it official.

While the Holy Trinity is the central mystery of faith which we can never fully comprehend, today the Spirit speaks of this mystery in deeply familial terms. God the Father is my daddy. God the Sons is really, truly, and even legally my brother, and so his dad is my dad. God the Holy Spirit leads us into the heart of the Trinity and affects our adoption. The Trinity is not some abstract theological concept out there somewhere. The Trinity is a deeply personal, familial reality for a believer in Jesus.

But only if we suffer with him. The point here is not to go out looking for opportunities to suffer. Rather, when suffering comes to us we should take it as an opportunity to be united with Jesus’ suffering in some small way. To suffer with Jesus is to share in his inheritance, to be his sister or brother. To suffer with Jesus is to be a child of God. In the words of the Letter to the Hebrews, “Son though he was, [Jesus] learned obedience from what he suffered” (Hebrews 5:8). In Jesus’ own words, “Whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother” (Matthew 12:50).

This week, the Spirit invites us to embrace the mystery of the Trinity not as a confusing math equation or a philosophical and theological abstraction, but as a celebration of family.

n the Nicene Creed, we profess every Sunday those things that we say we believe: God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit; the Incarnation; the Passion; Death and Resurrection; the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church and more.

There is one matter that, while implied, may not be explicitly stated. This one thing is referred to as the “Source and Summit” of our Catholic Faith by the Catechism of the Catholic Church and by more than one Pope. The “Source and Summit” of our faith is the Eucharist.

What is sometimes not understood about the Eucharist is that it contains the TRUE PRESENCE OF JESUS CHRIST. In the Eucharist, Jesus is actually present—Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity. It is surprising how many Catholics either do not understand this truth or simply don’t believe it to be possible.

Stop and think about it. The God of the universe, He who created it all, the sun, the moon, all the stars, all the earth and everything on it, you and me, all created by Him... He is present—physically present—right here. HE IS HERE. Jesus unequivocally taught us this and authorized his Apostles and their successors to make him present through the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Do this in remembrance of Me.

The next time you receive Holy Communion, look closely at the host and think, “GOD.” Know that He loves you so much that He desires to become one with you. To accomplish this He has made himself miraculously present there in what looks like a wafer of bread. Take and eat, this is My Body given up for you. There is no greater love.

ever have these words of Jesus resonated more than when I began to care for my father, who has dementia. After caring for my mother, who suffered physically for many years, I found the care required for someone who has dementia to be radically different and overwhelming.

Dementia and Alzheimer’s present challenges and symptoms that are uniquely difficult to care for and understand. Dementia and Alzheimer’s not only cause cognitive decline, but also cause physical, emotional, psychological, behavioral, and personality changes. And watching your loved one fade away is unbearably painful and sorrowful. Sadly, those who suffer are left with little means of treatment, if any. This can all take a tremendous toll on family members and caregivers. Feeling as if the care of my father was too great for me to bear, I had to keep reminding myself that I am not alone.

The rest that Jesus promises is love, healing, and peace, not the end of all our labor. But taking time for yourself in prayer with Jesus can renew one spiritually, physically, and emotionally. Moreover, being in a prayerful community with others who are traveling this same journey can be a wonderful source of support, encouragement, guidance, and hope.

If you have and/or care for a loved one who has dementia or Alzheimer’s, I invite and encourage you to join Saints John & Paul’s new Dementia/Alzheimer’s Support Group. Come and be spiritually nourished, meet others who share your experience, find helpful information and resources, and take time for yourself to restore and renew. Meetings will be held on the second Saturday of the month at 10:00 AM, beginning on June 12. For more information contact Kim at [email protected] or Karen Walker at [email protected].

have been on a wonderful four-year journey, and God willing, I will

be ordained into the Diaconate next year. I have had many wonderful

experiences along the way and have deepened my faith in ways that

I cannot describe. There have been several key moments that include

retreats, guest speakers who have touched my heart, and many books I

have read that have drawn me into a deeper appreciation of our Catholic

traditions.

A recent experience was when my class and I were installed into the Ministry

of Lector. This is one of two minor orders that remain in the Latin Rite of

Catholicism. It marks the next step in my journey, and as the Bishop blessed

me while together we held the book of the Gospels, I was overwhelmed

with joy. I am humbled by this experience and the journey.

I am also very blessed by the support I have been given by my wife,

Kathleen, and our two children, Cody and Katie. I can feel the prayers and

support that all of you are providing me and I would ask that you continue

to pray for me and my classmates as we near Ordination. Be assured that

I am praying for all of you and look forward to continuing to serve the

Church. May God bless each of you in a special way.

hen I made it to senior year of high school at North Allegheny, I was thrilled to finally make it to the top of the pack. Freshman year was long in the past, and I was becoming comfortable with who I was and where I was going in my future. I had my closest friends by my side, my college picked out, and my major decided. I was ready for the future and a new hill to climb.

Ten years later I think to myself: Where has the time gone, and how did I get here?

I wish I had more moments to pause and think about where am I going and where have I been. These moments are critical in forming our future and listening to our past.

If you are a high school senior, I want to invite you to one of these important moments to pause and reflect on your awesome involvement in mission trips, youth ministry, faith formation, Confirmation, service projects, Vacation Bible School, and everything else. Faith has been a part of your life up until this point, and that’s something to celebrate.

Come join us for Mass at Saints John & Paul on Saturday, June 5 at 5:00 PM with a cookout to follow in the pavilion. You can expect a special blessing, a gift, hamburgers and hot dogs and a time to celebrate you, your past, and your future.

LED BY FATHER MICHAEL ROCHE

have always found comfort in Saint Joseph. His quiet,

strong presence called to me, even in my childhood.

When Pope Francis called for a year dedicated to Saint

Joseph, the immense love I had for Saint Joseph was

deepened.

I felt compelled to learn more about the courageous

man who said “Yes.” Yes, when he took Mary as his

bride. Yes, when he was told that he needed to take

his family and flee to an unknown land, where he would

have to start all over. His daily “Yes” in teaching Jesus

by word and work. I began my rededication to Jesus

through Saint Joseph with The Consecration to Saint

Joseph by Father Calloway, then continued with a daily

reflection on Saint Joseph and by praying The Litany to

Saint Joseph.

When I heard that Saints John & Paul was offering

a monthly Evening Prayer with a reflection on Saint

Joseph, I knew I wanted to attend. However, when the

day arrived, the last thing I wanted to do when I got

home from work was rush to cook and clean up dinner

and then go to the church for an event that I knew

nothing about. I was tired and just wanted to relax on

the couch, but I pushed myself and it was worth the

effort. It was beautiful and simple. Evening Prayer and

reflection was only a half hour long, but the church

remained open for private, quiet prayer following the

spoken dialogue. This gave me the opportunity to slow

down, to calm my busyness and focus on thanking the

Lord in a gentle, prayerful manner. I now look forward

to dedicating the time to attend this beautiful evening

each month.

eucharistic adorationAs Catholics, we believe that Christ becomes truly present within the Blessed Sacrament. As promised by Him, His Presence is abiding, not something that vanishes at the conclusion of Mass. During Eucharistic Adoration, we can sit silently in His Presence and open ourselves to His Graces. Adoration available at Our Lady of Peace, Monday-Thursday 8AM-8PM and at Saints John & Paul, Sunday-Friday 8AM-8PM.
