Pennant Hills Bowling Club Newsletter 28, 10 November 2016 News from the Men’s Club What happened? Mixed Pairs Carol Huttery and John Archer played Pam Lowe and Martin Billam (the defending mixed pairs champions). For the thirty-plus spectators who dropped in to watch, it was well worth the effort. A riveting finish to this competitive mixed-pairs tournament. It was a match that saw draw-bowls and on-shots worthy of these very talented players. All four players at various times pulled off difficult conversions when they needed to. However, it was the draw-shots that stood out. For those who could not make the final, the following report may capture (in a very small way) this highly entertaining match. Pam and Martin began the match scoring 4 shots on the first end. Carol and John then came back, scoring 1, then 4 then 2 shots on the next 3 ends, putting them in the lead, 7-4. Come the 7 th end scores were locked, 8 all. The eighth end saw Carol and John pick up an additional 2 shots, regaining the lead, 10-8. Come the 11 th end, it’s Pam and Martin in front, 12-11. Pam and Martin took the next 3 ends, running away 16-11. By the 17 th end Carol and John were only behind by one shot, 16-17. But a huge surge from Pam and Martin saw them eventual winners, winning the last four ends. Final score: 22- 16. Congratulations to all competitors in this event, but especially to the finalists. Well done, Pam and Martin on becoming the 2016 Mixed Pairs Champions. Post Script: For those who had to leave early, the other contest, crows verses magpies: A raucous affair. However, the maggies were the dominant side, knocking over their black feathered opponents by quite a few feathers(You had to be there!) Russell McGarrity (Match Committee Chairman, etc)

Runners up Carol and John

The Birthday Carnival, On Saturday 29 October a good turnout of 66 men and women contested this belated event, which was run on the Winners/Winners and Losers/Losers basis. The first game of 10 ends determined which winners would play off for the Winners/Winners prizes, and the losers for the Losers/Losers prizes. The second game was also over 10 ends, and with a total of 8 prizes on offer, even losers can be winners. There were some close results, but everyone agreed that the format of the day's play was an interesting variation. Our new sponsor, Wirreanda Uniting Care provided the prize money, which was presented by Maria, and we are thankful to the efforts of Kel Sullivan in obtaining this sponsorship. The 2 major winning teams were: Winners of Winners - Paul Leverett, Jim Jupp and Ruth Low Winners of Losers - John Archer, Bill Cowan and Orma Downs.
