TIGER NEWS

Further, to our Reserves who play at Port Melbourne on Sunday (11am) against Port we offer our sincere best wishes for the game and a positive result.

I am pleased to be part of this great club, it is a considerable pleasure for me to be able to publicly offer my undivided support. Go Tigers.

FINALS FEVER

I write these few thoughts on the eve of September when I now know both our Seniors and Reserves finished fifth in the home and away series and that means both our sides are to participate in this year’s finals.

This as a great effort and I am so pleased that the hard work put in by so many during this year has brought us this success.

On my own behalf, but more particu-larly on behalf of all who support the Werribee Football Club, I wish Paul Satterley, his coaching staff, along with the playing group led by our Captain Dom Gleeson and Vice Captain Robbie Castello, all the very best for the Final Series but particularly for Saturday where we play Box Hill Hawks at Avalon Airport Oval.

I certainly hope to see many supporters at our ground to show our enthusiasm for our team.

Finals Memories

Anthony Eames 1991 Liston Medallist “I remember it was either a prelim final or a semi final against Dandenong in 1991. It was in the dying seconds and we were a few points up, less than a goal. It had been a really tough game all day. The ball went into the Dandenong forward line and Frank Lesiputty took a mark, he would have four deep. I was at the bottom of the pack and his feet were at my head level. I thought that was the best mark I have ever seen. His courage was great ‘cause he was surrounded by Dandenong players. He just grabbed it so cleanly. Whenever I see him we talk about that mark, it just stood out to me like a Leo Barry type moment”. Adam Taylor 101 Senior Games ‘I was really lucky because we only missed the finals one year I was at Werribee (2000 under Alastair Clarkson). The most memorable was playing in 1996 with my brother Daryl. We lost to Frankston in the preliminary final. They had David Rhys-Jones as playing coach, I was only 19 but I stood him for a short time in the game. 1998 was pretty special with players like Simon Atkins, Nigel Kellett, David Mitchell and Jimmy Puli. We lost to Springvale in the Grand Final. In 2001 I played my 100th in the prelim final when we beat Springvale then lost to Box Hill in the Grand Final. They were coached by Donald McDonald and that was my last game for the club”. Matt Power 1993 Premiership Player “It is a bit of a blur to be honest but I remember there was a heap of rain all week and I thought my skinny little legs were not going to be any good. We were very focused because Port had beaten us leading into the game but we got away early and then there was the big blue at the end with spectators on the ground. After Richie Raeburn kicked a goal everyone thought it was the end of the game. I think they banned heavy alcohol after that game. I ended up with the footy it was a bit of a running joke between me and Neil Connell. I still have it at home, mounted with a sign saying stolen by me”.

FINALS MEMORIES

Trent Churchill 2003 Captain “1998 we had a great side with Frosty (Michael Frost), Axe (Simon Atkins), Satts, the Gowans twins and Jimmy Puli. We were minor premiers and just the confidence in every bloke in the team was enormous. Right across the board it was the best team I have ever played in. We played Springvale in the second semi at Port Melbourne and we won by 12 goals or thereabouts. We had a great time, it was a great bunch of blokes with Dogger (Scott Faulkner), Nigel Kellett and JD (Jeremy Dyer). Just that feeling on the day that we were going to play in a Grand Final was really good”.

Chris Bond Senior Coach 2001&2002 “In my two years of coaching at Werribee every final was tough because of the mix of AFL & VFL players. There isn’t really one that stands out to be honest. We had a great group with the Bulldogs players and a really good senior group of Werribee players. Not winning the grand final did gnaw away for a little while but if that is the worst thing that happens to you in life you are not doing too badly. I had a great time at Werribee and I have tremendous respect for everyone involved at that club it was a great time in my life”.

Simon Atkins Player & Senior Coach 2005-2010 “2005 was my first year as senior coach and we made the grand final against Sandy. We were 24 points down at three quarter time and I thought they were shot. I remember Damien McCormack being tackled in the goal square the goal would have put us in front. Someone said to me I thought you might have been jumping around a bit more but it was such a new experience I tried to stay collected. We should have won that one and 98 as a player I thought we were the best team in the comp by far but on the day nothing worked for us we just didn’t have the zing we had had all year, it just goes to show.”

Tigers Get The Number Right

The Werribee Football Club is looking forward to the 2011 Acacia VFL Finals series it is great to see the club back playing finals after missing out the last two years. We pride ourselves on getting things right, on and off the field, and with that in mind we are pleased to announce that after many months of research and fact checking it has come to our attention that our games record holder is in fact former Captain and three time Best and Fairest winner Travis Robertson with 135 games. This honour is very prized at our football club and we are pleased to have rectified this.

At the start of the 2011 season Tigers Captain Dom Gleeson had played 116 games. Dom has played in all 18 home and away games this year bringing his tally to 134.

Today in the elimination final against Box Hill he will equal Travis on 135 games. Congratulations to Dom who has been a great servant of the club and an inspiring leader.

Go the Tigers in the finals!

The Backroom Boys By Daniel Paproth “It’s been good this year, and we just need to keep building on that. For me the only bad part is that you have to get up early to travel for the away games!”

Harold meanwhile splits his time between the foot-ball club and the cricket club, as well as helping out with the WynBay Power, a football team which caters to Wyndham’s disadvantaged.

He says his roles vary and he is happy to help out in any way he can.

“Whatever they want me to do, I’ll do it, they look after us,” he says. “I was in the beer wagon last week.”

“I worked at the Werribee Ammos for five or six years and just needed a change.

“And it’s fantastic at Werribee, it’s a really good environment, just terrific blokes. Meeting new people, everyone is down to earth.

“We all get looked after very well, we’ll go down to the Tigers Club for meals, earlier in the year I won $1,000 in the Monster Raffle.

“It’s a you-scratch-my-back-I’ll-scratch-yours type situation.”

The Werribee Football Club thanks all those volunteers who have been part of the 2011 season.

The players are the face of a football club. The coaching staff ensures those players are getting the best out of themselves. And the people in the office keep the whole machine well-oiled.

But it’s the large roster of volunteers who make sure that the club runs as smoothly as possible throughout the entire season.

These are the people who go about their roles with a minimum of fuss, happy to turn up and do whatever is needed to help out.

Among these crucial parts of the Werribee Foot-ball Club are Alan Clayton and Harold Rixon, both long-time volunteers who have given their time to the club for years.

Alan, 60, is a property steward both at Avalon Air-port Oval and when the club travels away, and cherishes his time at the club.

His journey with the club began back when he was 16, playing juniors, and he is still involved, more than four decades on.

Alan also ran the Werribee Sports Club for 10 years.

“I think it’s all about the camaraderie and the support,” he says.“Everyone is very welcoming, new blokes every year get involved.

“Mark and the committee are great people to work with, and the alignment with North Mel-bourne is just fantastic, they’re all great people.” He says he is enjoying Werribee’s success this season, with the club playing finals after missing out last year.

The Final Word from the Coach

We are really proud of our player’s achievements this year, to have completed the season in 5th position in both the Seniors & Reserves is a great result.

Rewind 12 months ago and we were in 13th place (2nd bottom) and the season complete, having missed the finals 2 years in a row.

The opportunity to play a home final in front of our supporters is fantastic and we are putting all energy into ensuring we throw everything at Box Hill.

We have only met once this season when we won by 47 points at home. Surprisingly, 17 of our players who played in that Round 5 game will represent the club again this weekend.

Box Hill played some quality football against Port Melbourne only last week and almost caused a major upset (against a side that didn’t lose a game for the entire season), so we anticipate a very competitive game and will need to have all players focused on working hard for 4 quarters.

Good luck to all our players, I am sure they will represent the club to the best of their ability throughout the finals.

Thank you to all our supporters and sponsors, we value your ongoing commitment to our club.
