Gina Bao Earns First Place in Fairchild ChallengeNASH student Gina Bao recently earned first place in the high school level of the Fairchild Challenge at sponsored by Phipps Conservatory. For this year’s challenge, student participants were tasked with creating a story that illustrates the relation-ship between people and edible plants, using photography as a means of reflection. Students were asked to examine the relation-ship between people and the environment through the food that we con-sume. They were also asked to research the featured plants and write a short caption explaining their photos. Over 465 students participated in this challenge.

In Gina’s entry, she explored plants from the Sichuan region of China. She featured plants

such as bitter melon, lemongrass, and ginger from whole produce to their use in traditional cuisine. Gina visited that region during a stay in China and has loved these foods ever since.GOLD 2015

Students Visit the Frick Art and Historical Center

NASH GOAL and AP & Honors French students visited the Frick Art and Historical Center in December for Joie de Vivre: Art and Revolution in 18th Century France. After studying original 18th-century French paintings, drawings, furniture, and interior design, students explored the dynamics of peasant and court life, which vividly demonstrated the socioeconomic

factors leading to the French Revolution. Students were given a tour and participated in a theater-based workshop where they “reenacted” the French Revolu-tion! One student remarked, “It was so fun to act out the parts of the aristocrats and peasants. I enjoyed learning about the culture during the time period.”

PES Donates to North Hills Community Outreach

During the month of December, Peebles Elementary students, staff, and families collected new hats, gloves, scarves, and mit-tens to donate to the North Hills Community Outreach. The items were hung on a tree in the lobby throughout the month and donated on December 19th. Thank you to all of the gener-ous families at Peebles who donated to this year’s very successful Giving Tree and warmed the hearts and hands of our friends in the area. Peebles’ donation of 56 hats, 90 pairs of gloves, 6 scarves, and 15 hat/gloves sets is helping the North Hills Community Outreach keep children warm this winter.

Additionally, the recent “Souper Bowl” Food Drive was also a huge success at Peebles. A total of 364 items of food were collected and donated to the North Hills Community Outreach.

Thanks to the Peebles students, community, and staff members for their caring spirit!

Learning about Technology IntegrationThanks to Support from

the NA Foundation.During the In-Service Day on January 26, various groups from around the District worked with Mr. George Couros on the integration of technology in the schools and classrooms at North Allegheny. Mr. Couros provided his expertise to District principals, administrators, the IT department, and the Technology Com-mittee as they discussed instructional practices, technology integration, and hardware.

The NA Foundation helped the School District underwrite the cost of this professional development opportunity and information-gathering project. This program is in line with the Foundation’s goal of investing in the provi-sion of technology for students and increasing STEM programs.

Mr. Couros is a Division Principal of Innovative Teaching and Learning with Parkland School Division in Canada, as well as an innovative teaching, learning, and leadership consultant. Mr. Couros has worked with schools and organi-zations around the world through conferences, keynoting, providing workshops, and consulting on how organizations can move forward by creating innovative environments for all learn-ers in the community.

Join Us at The PLACE!The North Allegheny School District recently re-ceived a 2014-2015 STEAM grant from the Allegheny Intermediate Unit’s Center for Creativity and the Gra-ble Foundation. The proposal, “Join us at the PLACE!” was submitted by Dr. Tammy Andreyko, Assistant Superintendent of Academic Advancement, and Mrs. Karyn Dobda, Coordinator of Online Learning and Professional Development.

The purpose of this grant was to create a live-learn space at the NA Senior High School that is com-fortable, bright, colorful, open and inviting where students and staff can meet to collaborate, create, and work. The PLACE, which stands for Play, Learn, Achieve, Collaborate, and Engage, redesigned a gen-eral purpose computer lab to serve as a high-tech learning center and digital playroom. In addition to computers and Wi-Fi, the PLACE features a projec-tion unit, a full dry-erase wall, stylish tables and

chairs, and lounge- style seating to allow students to collaborate in whatever manner works for their group.

NA teacher Fran Hawbaker was the creative spirit behind the mural at The PLACE. She included stu-dent artists Mia Hawbaker, Kevin Dougherty and Yusuph Ulomi in the project. Mr. Sieminski was very supportive of the project and pleased to see a new way to access technology and the library areas at NASH.

A special thank you to the Benedum and Grable Foundations for their vision and continued support which allowed NA to be one of only 25 selected grant recipients.

Students and faculty are eagerly using the space for classroom and special projects.
