Alan Long, CPA CA, is the incom-ing President of the PEI Road Builders and Heavy Construction Association.

Alan is a graduate of the Univer-sity of Prince Edward Island with a Bachelor of Business degree and was admitted to the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Prince Edward Island in 1979. He has served the business community and the community at large in various capacities throughout his career.

Commencing at the age of 13 through high school and university, Alan worked in all aspects of the hos-pitality industry with Wally & Sally Rodd, the highly respected founders of Rodd Hotels & Resorts. Family business participation was always on the list of activities. Alan’s parents, Bill & Edith Long, were the Toyota Deal-ers in Charlottetown until 1994 while his Uncle, Jack Howatt, was a mixed

farmer in Darlington. Both environ-ments provided the opportunity for not only hands on entrepreneurial experience, but also the understand-ing of the value of the daily grass roots work.

From 1976 through to 1998, Alan provided professional services to the PEI business sectors, including the roadbuilding and construction industries, with the firm now known as Grant Thornton LLP. Progressing through the various staffing levels, he served as Office Managing Partner for the Charlottetown office. Returning to his hospitality roots, Alan rejoined David Rodd at Rodd Hotels & Re-sorts in 1998 as their Vice President of Finance & Administration for 11 years. This was an exciting develop-ment time for the Rodd organization providing the experiential challenges of resort & property development

coupled with the daily operational de-mands of a large hotel & resort chain.

In 2010, Alan was appointed Branch Manager – Charlottetown for Atlantic Cat, now Toromont Cat. This position has brought new chal-lenges and experiences in the road-building and construction industry, but the same passion for serving and helping customers.

During his career, Alan has served in many professional capacities: Presi-dent of the Institute of Chartered Ac-countants, Member of the Executive Committee for the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants, Member of the Board Governors of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants, Chairman of the Atlantic School of Chartered Accountancy, and a Mem-ber of Chartered Professional Ac-countants of Prince Edward Island. Alan has served in various capacities in sporting and charitable organizations as well: Charlottetown Curling Club, Heart & Stroke Foundation, United Way of Prince Edward Island, Hillsborough Rotary Club, and Sherwood Parkdale Minor Hockey Association.

Consistent in Alan’s career is a “personal in approach” service to his clients and custom-ers, support for fellow employees, and contributing to those who need help – all while having some

fun! Contribution and participation in activities and celebration of the achievements of family, friends, clients, employers and fellow employees have been career highlights.

Alan and wife Marilyn, have great pride in their four children, their spouses and two grandchildren; and of course - the dogs!
