The PE Express’s inquiries from the municipality about the situation and the maintenance of the area, has led a task force of the Department of Waste Mana- gement to investigate the problem. Although Morné Wagner, a resident, claimed that the municipality has done nothing to remove the rub- ble, Mthubanzi Mniki, a municipal spokesperson, said a plan had been put in place to keep those people that dump illegally away for good. According to Mniki, the “problem area” in Kensing- ton gets cleared by municipal workers every two weeks. “But I’ve seen the photographs taken by the wor- kers. It seems a week after clearing it is almost worse than before cleaning. Rubbish is dumped here just too quickly,” Mniki said. To counter illegal dumping, Mniki believes the mu- nicipality will turn the plot into a playground for chil- dren. “To convert the site into something useful is the best way to prevent an illegal dumping ground.” Wagner also believes the construction of a play- ground will keep the rubbish - and the rats - away for good. “There are lots of small children who come into the street who will certainly enjoy the playground. I just hope the park will be well maintained, because once the grass grows long, it will again attract litterbugs and vermin,” Wagner said. Mniki could not provide a time frame for the con- struction of the playground. FOR the next few weeks – for as long as it takes–NMMUwillbeprovidingextrapractical sciencesessions for Grade 10 to 12 learners from North-ernareasschools tohelplearnersmakeupfor losttime.

“They can experience practically what’s goingto be taught, so that teachers can then spend ashorter time teaching it. The teachers need tomaximise their time. They are under such a lotof pressure.”This, according to Isabel van Gend, Pro-

gramme Manager for NMMU’s STEM (Science,Technology, Engineering and Maths) in Actionprogramme, which runs in more than 40 highschools throughout NelsonMandela Bay, includ-ing sixNorthern areas schools, namely Bertram,David Livingstone, Chapman High, St James,Gelvandale and Nasrudin Islamic high schools.

Northern areas schools opened last week afteran almost month-long shutdown, sparked by lastyear’s poor provincial and citywide matric re-sults, andallegedmismanagementbytheprovin-

cial Department of Education. Many schools have extended their school

hours and suspended sport, to enable their pu-pils to catch up.STEM in Action’s practical sessions take

place during pre-booked morning slots fromMonday to Thursday at NMMU’s MissionvaleCampus, and complement the theory beingtaught in the classroom, but they have intro-duced additional Friday morning and after-noon sessions –which also kicked off lastweek– specifically to accommodate theNorthern ar-eas schools.“We are prepared to fit them in, to help them

out. These sessions will run until the schoolsfeel they’ve caught up, and then they will fitback into the normalMonday to Thursday ses-sions.”STEM in Action offers physical science ex-

periments to the entire physical science class, including their teacher.“Each learner is involved in actually doing

the science experiments. Formany [in our pro-gramme], it is the first time they are doing apractical or even entering a lab,” Van Gendsaid.STEM in Action also runs a parallel Get

Ahead inTechnologyandEngineering (GATE)programmefor learnerswhoshowthemostpo-tential.NorthernAreas learners already in this pro-

gramme have been attending these classesfrom the start of the school year.“Although their schoolswere closed,we con-

tacted them on their cell phones and encour-aged them to come.”VanGend added that the programme includ-

ed an “English in Science” component, wherelearners whose mother tongue is not English, can gain a greater understanding of the lan-guage used in science. The purpose of STEM in Action, which is

sponsored by the SouthAfricanNational RoadAgencyLimited (Sanral), is to promote careersin science and engineering. – REPORTER

A SERIES of international workshops that al-lowedBay students to bring their own ideas fordeveloping the metro to the table, was held atthe Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University(NMMU) this month.

Architecturalexperts fromas farawayasEu-rope and South America visited the Bay forthree weeks, where they helped groups ofNMMU architecture students to sharpen theirskills in this profession. The teachers for the workshops included

Carin Smuts, an architect based in Cape Town,Prof. StephenRead fromTUDelft university inthe Netherlands, Prof. Armando dal Fabbrofrom the University IUAV of Venice in Italy, and Prof. Matías Imbern from the Universityof Rosario in Argentina.Under their keen leadership, students built

three-dimensional models of the Baakens Val-ley, with their own ideas for the development

of the region added to the design.Studentswere very enthusiastic to take part

in this project, said Dal Fabbro. “They werevery interactive,” he said. “The project was asimportant and enriching to us as it was tothem.”Smuts said the students were encouraged to

make their own presentations and decisionsduring the workshops. “They even took turnsteaching. By doing this, they are empoweredto become better architects after graduating, because they learn that there is not one partic-ular right way to do their work.”This approach was also a boost to the stu-

dents’ confidence. “Within threeweekswehadfirsthandknowledgeof the entiredevelopmentprocess,” said Sarah Weiss, a first-year archi-tecture student.

)The studentprojects, whichwere complet-ed last week, will be submitted to theMandelaBay development agency (MBDA), to consideralongside theirexistingplansofdevelopingtheBaakens Valley.

THE Phelophepa Health Train – known asthe world’s biggest mobile clinic – has beena beacon of hope to millions of South Afri-cans in need of medical assistance, since itsinduction in 1994.

This year, more than 50 Nelson MandelaMetropolitan University Health Science stu-dents will work aboard the health care train, alongside trained professionals to bring pri-mary health care to 72 communities through-out South Africa. The university has beenpart of the “miracle train” initiative since2008.

The first 18 nursing students from NMMUhave just returned to the classroom afterspending two weeks in Limpopo, deliveringhealth care to hundreds of underprivilegedpeople in the area as part of the TransnetFoundation initiative.

These students will be followed by addi-tional fourth-yearNMMUpharmacyandpsy-chology students at different points of thePhelophepa’s journey throughout the year.

Health Transnet Foundation’s seniorman-ager Shamona Kandia said NMMU has beena pioneer through its Trust and CommunityDevelopment Unit and has always supportedthe project. “The Phelophepa complementsthose services and aims to assist communi-ties which cannot afford health care and of-ten experience barriers to access publichealth services.” Kandia explained.Phelophepa, which means “good, clean

health” in Tswana and Sotho, is more thana mobile hospital and contains over 40 per-manent staff and numerous volunteers. Itprovides outreach and educational pro-grammes and has reached over 23,5 millionpeople thus far. About 50 pharmacy, dental, nursing, psychology and optometry studentsfrom various universities live and work incabins on the trains for two-week rotation pe-riods. Hospitality students also assist withmeal preparation. This year, the Phelophepa will visit the

Eastern Cape from 13 June to 12 August andwill be in Alice, Dimbaza, King William’sTown,Queenstown,Burgersdorp, Swartkopsand Willowmore.

NELSON Mandela MetropolitanUniversity students and staff can re-move the long walk between the uni-versity’s North and South campuses,by hopping onto a solar-chargede-bike.

A total of ten e-bikes, all part of ashared fleet, have just been launchedon February 16 as part of this uniquegreen transport pilot project.

“This project is a first for a SouthAfrican university,” said Greg DucieProjects Director for NMMU Infra-structure.

The shared e-bikes can be collectedand dropped off at custom-designeddocking stations on the two campus-es.

The e-bike project has been fundedmutually by NMMU, uYilo and theAdvanced Mechatronics TechnologyCentre which houses NMMU’smerSETA chair in Engineering De-velopment.

“Each station has rooftop solarpanels that provide the green energyneeded to power this green transportsolution,” said Hiten Parmar DeputyDirector for uYilo.

“Society needs to embrace the con-cept of shared mobility as a serviceto get from Point A to Point B ratherthan the ‘ownership’ way of think-ing. Parmar said the e-bikes are agreat way to showcase the fleet shar-ing system and they also provide “ex-citing opportunities for further re-search on a real life application andworking model.”

The swipe of a student or staff ac-cess card will be all that is requiredto check the bikes out of their sta-tions, although those wanting to usethem will have to complete a once-off

online registration, and collect keysand a helmet from nearby securitypoints.

Car sharing, a step-up from bikesharing, is a vision towards whichuYilo is working. It is happening inmajor cities like London, Paris andOslo and was last year introduced toSouth Africa by Locomute.

“In addition to harvesting renewa-ble energy for green mobility, mobili-ty-sharing reduces the number ofcars on the road which has an im-proved effect on the quality of ourair. We will monitor the success ofthe pilot, before looking at expandingsuch projects nationally,” said Par-mar.

8 NEWS PE EXPRESS | WEDNESDAY 24 FEBRUARY 2016

A career in business today requires a different set of skills,

compared to a decade ago. Whilst there will always be a

place for traditional qualifications, the South African

business landscape is looking for individuals with strong

leadership capabilities that can move comfortably and

competently between all areas of finance, marketing and

management within an organisation.

“Education is not static and though there are other BCom

degrees on offer, our research showed that there was a gap

for a qualification that covers all these skills,” says Dr.

Hendrik Botha, Academic Head at

. “The Boston

qualification is a bachelor's degree that

specifically equips students with the knowledge and skills

for career opportunities in the fields of business,

management and marketing.”

“The programme content – coupled with the flexibility it

offers individuals – has made this degree an increasingly

popular choice with students: regardless of whether the

economy is experiencing growth or not, qualified

entrepreneurs, marketers and managers are always

needed. With both the global and local economy still in the

midst of one of its most challenging periods, this is probably

even more relevant,” says Botha.

The degree has been

created to produce the kind of managers and

entrepreneurs South Africa needs, to take the country

forward, exploring new opportunities and avenues of doing

business.

Ironically, a consequence of these tough and changing

economic times is that prospective students – both

undergraduate and postgraduate – are seeking out

alternative means to complete their qualifications aside

from following the traditional full-time university route.

Whether they need to work while studying in order to fund

their education, or because they simply are too far away

from a suitable university, or because they already are in a

career, but want to further or change their skills set or

acquire a formal qualification – there students who

need the flexibility of studying part time with the benefits

of accessing a local support centre.

offers their degree

with flexible study modes. A lack of support and guidance,

so often associated with part-time study, desperately

needs to be remedied to successfully complete a degree.

provides students with the best of all worlds –

distance learning, whether part-time or full time, with

open access to critical support and help. Thousands of

sudents currently make use of this at more than 40 support

centres, nationwide.

Many students who eagerly take on distance education,

thinking they would be able to balance their study, work

and home commitments comfortably, may find that it's not

as easy as planned. They soon discover that course material

is generally of a high standard and that they positively

require some form of interaction with educators/tutors in

order to achieve the successful outcome they require.

“At this is achieved through an education platform,

enriched by digital video and online interactivity – all

supported by a countrywide network of support centres.

These support centres provide access to computers, online

assessments, technology-based training material, digital

library facilities, examination venues and administrative

services. All students select a support centre and are

encouraged to make use of the facilities for the duration of

their degree studies, daily” explains Botha.

Furthermore the College's system of pacing studies,

combined with a variety of assessments, has seen tertiary

and degree students working continuously and doing very

well. also conducts

courtesy calls to students to check on how they are

managing in their studies. Its faculty regularly sets

telephonic appointments and deal with online queries

about course content.

The degree includes

the important aspects of business and marketing

management, accounting and finance, entrepreneurship

and internationalisation, commercial law, economics,

computer literacy, brand management, industrial

psychology and project management.

“There is no doubt that the South African economy and

business world are ready for managers with such diverse

skills and expertise as covered in this qualification, and

graduates will be well equipped to become marketing

and/or brand managers, account managers, public

relations officers, media or advertising consultants – even

store, department, business unit or general managers,”

concludes Botha.

2016 Applications are still open for a wide range of fields in

our degree, diplomas and higher certificates. Apply online

A PORT Elizabeth jewellery designerrecently soaked up the atmosphere ofJapan in icy weather while showcas-ing her range at Japan’s largest inter-national jewellery trade show.

Jenni Gault, along with her BrandManager Ashleigh Parkin, were hon-oured to be surrounded by interna-tional designers, economists andmanufacturers at the prestigiousopening ceremony dinner and whileGault took pleasure in enjoying aglass of wine with René Everson-Var-ney, Counsellor Political at the SA em-bassy in Tokyo, she was also hon-oured to have a personal meeting withManley Barnard, Head of the Econom-ic Section.

“It was excellent to note that whilstwe are bound to face some challengingtimes in the jewellery industry bothlocally and internationally, interna-tional designers, manufacturers andretailers are optimistic for the seasonof 2016 and 2017,” Gault said.

“Manley Barnard went into detailabout the opportunities available forSouth African companies to trade in

the Japanese market, resulting insome very exciting potential collabo-rations between myself and our Japa-nese team.”

International Jewellery Tokyodrew to a highly successful close with1 089 exhibitors participating from 31countries and 27 311 quality buyersthroughout Japan and the Asia Pacif-ic region. Two-thirds of the exhibitorswere Japanese, while the remainingone-third were international exhibit-ors.

Gault is however fond of sight-see-ing and had the pleasure of photo-graphing many Geisha ladies, dressedin full traditional Japanese Komo’s.“Tokyo is a beautiful, vibrant city, butin contrast to many of the other majorcapitals it is incredibly quiet andclean,” she explained.

“We were lucky enough to enjoyclear skies and a striking view ofMount Fuji from the Metro on the wayto the show every morning.” She saidthey were also treated to Cosmopoli-tan foods, some rather interesting andsurprising, but most were incrediblydelicious.

“Japan is famous for its large varie-ty of incredibly tasty rice cake and its

very delicate sweets and confection-ery work,” she added.

The ladies took the opportunity toexplore the city through prolongingtheir stay by an extra two days andvisited the busiest walking intersec-tion in Tokyo - Shibuya - throughwhich as many as 2500 people crossat a single crossing time. This was fol-lowed by some well needed winterclothes for the icy Japan air.

“We completed our first day in Ja-pan with 30 minutes of true Japanes-es Karaoke, an amazing experienceproving that Ashleigh and I shouldnot give up our day jobs,” Gault said.Day two started with a view up the To-kyo Tower and after souvenir shop-ping they were humbled by The Sen-so-ji Temple, the oldest temple in To-kyo.

“We are truly left feeling like wehad experienced the true beauty ofTokyo,” she said.

Looking for greener pastures, my family and I moved to South Africa in 2008. It was daunting, but the support of my loving wife,Bernice, made it easier. After working in various sectors of the hardware industry, I gained the knowledge needed to pursue myown business once more.

I had the knowledge, but Nedbank had the belief, expertise and products to make it all happen. It all started with TerenceMarshall, my Relationship Banker, who took the time to listen and understand my needs. Together with him and Nedbank’ssmall business startup offer, my business, Insucon, has grown twofold, and in the near future we plan to open branches inGauteng, East London and eventually Cape Town.

AFTER two belowpar performances at theNMBA open water swimming champion-ships earlier in the month, 18-year-old de-fending Jendamark Bellbuoy swimsuitChampion, Daniel Jones, is peaking at theright time.

Having defended both his Double Mileand SPAR River Mile titles over the week-end, Jones couldn’t have asked to be in abetter position ahead of this Saturday’s ep-ic swim which carries one of the highestopen water prize purses in the Province.“That was very, very toughwith the last

50m just a flat-out shoulder to shouldersprint,” said Jones after his nail biting ti-tle defence at Sunday’s 92nd SPAR RiverMile where he managed to beat pre-racefavourite IanVenter in the runup throughthe finish tower.Being a top surf lifesaver with the Sum-

merstrand Surf Lifesaving Club, Jones’sadvantage is his skill in running out of thewater at the end of open water swimmingevents and this will be tested again thisSaturday when the Jendamark BellbuoyChallenge takes place at Pollok Beach.Billed as the toughest 5km IndianOcean

event on the planet, the 5km ocean sea isa daunting swimwhich sees swimmers go-ing 2.5km straight out to sea to round thenautical bellbuoy directly off PollokBeach. With final race entries for the event clos-

ing today, around 100 of South Africa’sbravest open water swimmers will be lin-ing up in two categories: the traditionalEnglish channel rules swimsuit categoryand the wetsuit category, for equal prizemoney across both categories for the firsttime in the history of the event.Title sponsors of the event, Jendamark

Automation, recently agreed on a 5-yearsponsorship of the event which includesa cash prize pool of R37 000 split equallyacross the two disciplines. For the top swimmers it’s always a gam-

ble which category to go with and whilstwater temperatures and ocean conditionsusually dictate the final decision, the in-crease of the prize money certainly addsanother huge factor to the decision.Defending wetsuit champion Ian Ven-

ter’s disappointment at having been beat-en by Jones in both the double and singlemile events last weekendwill definitely bein the forefront of his decision, which cate-gory to enter on Saturday.Wayne Jones, older brother to Daniel,

will also fancy his chances in the wetsuitcategory having finished just behind Dan-iel in the double Mile on Saturday.Defending ladies’ swimsuit champion

HannahHaswell will be keen to secure theR4 000 first prize after her strong doublemile victory on Saturday but will be verywary of in-form Woodridge College schol-ar Amica de Jager who was placed secondin the SPAR Ladies’ Mile behind JessicaCanter on Sunday. The big question is whether Haswell

goes for the wetsuit category to avoid ashow down with de Jager who is sure toenter into the swimsuit category. The Jendamark Bellbuoy Challenge of-

fers a fantastic spectacle from the shoresof Pollok Beach where spectators canwatch the entire race unfold in front ofthem.Race start is at 8.30am with the winners

expected to take just under one hour. Racebriefing for all participants takes place at6pm on Friday evening at News Cafe,Boardwalk. See www.bellbuoychallenge.co.za.

INcontinuationof Suzuki’s rapid expansion inmodel range in recent times, themanufacturerlaunched the Ciaz last year – a compact four-door sedanwith a classy look, lots of room andfeatures and affordability to boot, withmodelsranging between R193 900 and R230 900.

In a nutshell, an affordable, good-lookingfamily car, offeringa lot of spaceandhigh- speccomfort features, a good ride and fuel economygiving potentential customers another optionin the sedan market to put to the test. With the Ciaz, Suzuki can now offer a com-

petitor in the compact sedan market segmentagainst cars such as theVWPolo sedan (retail-ing between R196 800 and R257 100) and the To-yota Corolla Quest (retailing from R190 700).The new Suzuki Ciaz range consists of three

models, representing a choice of two specifica-tion levels (GL and GLX), and two transmis-sions. All three models have the same 1,4-litreK14B engine. For this week’s Express on Wheels, the Suz-

uki Ciaz GLX -the higher-spec version of thetwo manual transmission models- was test-driven. AGLXwith automatic transmission isalso available in the range.

ExteriorIts sleek, elegantdesign impressedme imme-

diately at first glance. Its expensive, elegantlook attracted many admiring glances andquestions about this sedan with the S emblemon the dominating front grille. The extended wheelbase and wide stance in

the front and back not only create the impress-ive roomy interior, but also contribute to a sta-ble ride.

The interiorDespite its being described as a compact se-

dan there is nothing compact about the spaceit offers on the inside. It hasmore than enoughroom to seat five adults in comfort, as well asa more than adequate boot with a capacity of495 litres.I found the interior tobea little less impress-

ive - as far as looks go - than the outside, butthis is to be expected as it is, despite its leatherseats (in the GLX models), not competing inthe premium car market. There are cup and bottle holders as well as

storage compartments aplenty. A fold-downarmrest offers two cup holders for rear seatpassengers.Additional stowage spaces include a lidded

compartment at the bottom of the centre stackthat is also home to a 12V power socket, andboth the USB and the analogue auxiliary in-puts. A storage box is located under the frontcentre armrest.Equipment levels are where the Ciaz stands

out among its competitors. Even on the baseGL specification one finds luxury featuressuch as electric windows and exterior mir-rors, remote central locking, automatic cli-mate-control air-conditioning with front andrear vents, and a six-speaker sound systemwith FM/AM tuner, CD player, Bluetooth con-nectivity and both USB and stereo analoguejacks. The tilt-adjustable multifunction steering

wheel offers integrated switchgear for the au-dio system and hands-free telephony.Safety and security features include dual

front airbags, inertia reel seatbelts with pre-tensioners and load limiters, side-impact doorbeams, ABS brakes with EBD and EBA, analarm/immobiliser, and child-proof locks.TheSuzukiCiaz 1.4GLXManual ismechani-

cally identical to the GL versions, and also of-fers all the standard features outlined above.Extra features include, among others, genuineleather upholstery and 16-inch alloy wheels.

The GLX also has keyless entry with a startbutton. The automatic (four-speed) version of the

Suzuki Ciaz GLX is identical to the manual.

EngineAll the models are powered by a 1.4 litre en-

gine that is much more powerful than onewould expect.Getting used to where the clutch takes and

concentrating on that for a smooth ride, tooksome effort initially, but you soon alter yourdriving style to accommodate this.Outon theopenroad theengine really comes

into its own and it’s difficult to believe it is notpowered by a turbo or 1.6 or bigger engine.

Overtaking can be done with confidence andpeace of mind. The steering and suspension are good, offer-

ing a pleasant ride duringwhich uneven roadsare handled with composure. The combined cycle fuel consumption is giv-

enasbetween5,4 and5,5 litres/100km,depend-ing on model.

PricingPrices include a three-year/100 000 km war-

ranty, and a three-year/60 000 kmservice plan.Services are at 15 000km intervals.1,4 GL – R193 9001,4 GLX – R214 9001,4 GLX automatic – R230 900

MONTH-END MAD SPECIALS

X1R24609-240216-PX-ckmgro-lmc2

WHAT more is there to say? After managingon the last ball of the first T20 game at New-lands to scrape home by the skin of their teethagainst England, the Proteas cruised along, asthough it’s no more than a practice exercise towinthesecondencounterat theWanderers lastweekend by a staggering nine wickets!

Which means they won the two-match series2-0. As they say in the classics: “Will wondersnevercease?”Theperformancesinbothmatch-es were simply amazing.

For quite some time it looked as though ABde Villiers (71) and his opening batsman part-ner, Hashim Amla (69 not out), were intent onwinning the match on their own.

This was South African T20 cricket at itsvery best. Certainly, the kids on the popularside seemed to think so. The posters theythought up and held up with utter glee were hi-larious.

As De Villiers raced to the fastest 50 by aSouth African in a T20 match – his 71 comingjust off just 29 deliveries – the home-made post-ers came up one after another.

Here are just a few of them as the younger spec-tators played havoc with the alphabet. Perhapsthe best of them all was: “AB D(everstating)” andno wonder, suddenly the statistics were beingturned upside down.

After just 10 overs had been bowled the scorewas 134 with only De Villiers back in the pavilion, having practically given his wicket away with amighty slog that didn’t quite reach the boundarythat time.

No wonder they call it “The Bullring”. Englandwereverydefinitely thebullsandtheywerebeingteased to death – by a Proteas team that last timeround only just managed to get there on the final

ball of the game. One cheeky little fellow’s placard read: “Don’t

worry,Mom–I’ll study later!”Nowsuddenly thematch equation was turned on its head. WhenDe Villiers departed with his 71 coming off just29balls, theSouthAfricansneededonly45towinoff 66 balls.

Looking ahead, the selectors have an interest-ing little problem on their hands. What do theydo with specialist wicketkeeper and high-scor-ing left-handed batsman, Quinton de Kock? Spe-cially after AB de Villiers declared at his postmatch interview: “I’ll keep on opening the in-nings for as long as they want me to.”

Whatever the selectors decide upon come theICC World T20 Championship – just around thecorner now – De Kock must be behind thestumps.

If AB, the captain after all, wants to continueopening the batting for the South Africans, welland good. De Kock can bat lower down and infactmightwellbenefit fromnothavingtoomuchresponsibility on his hands.

One thing seems to be certain, the Proteas –after being made to look like rank amateurs inthe Test series against England – are now backon their feet and looking like a team that has theability to go all the way. Go, Proteas! Go!

IT has been more than two years since MichaelSchumachersustainedseverebraininjuries fol-lowing a skiing accident in the French Alps.

The seven times world champion spent sever-al months in an induced coma in Grenoble hos-pital before being moved to a hospital in Lau-sanne.

In September 2014 he was finally moved to hisSwitzerland home where he receives round theclock medical attention. Since then, by the fami-ly’s request, little information has been sharedabout Schumacher’s condition.

While some close friends, such as former Fer-rari colleagues Jean Todt and Ross Brawn, havevisited Schumacher no definitive report hasbeen released on his recovery or condition. In-stead, Todt and Brawn have made the occasion-al statement that he “is still fighting.”

Sabine Kehm, the official spokesperson forthe Schumacher family, has repeatedly warnedthat only official statements, from her, be ac-

cepted. Recently, she’s quashed rumours thatthe former champion is able to walk as “irre-sponsible and offering false hope.”

It’s safe to assume, from the way that she in-tervened to dismiss these rumours that Schu-macher is likely to be in the same condition andmaking, at best, slow progress.

It’s a question that most people ask when thesubject is Formula 1 – how is Michael Schuma-cher? The truth is that only a few people knowtheanswerto thisquestionandtheyaren’t shar-ing it.

Some feel entitled to news on his conditionand it’s not unreasonable that they do. An argu-mentcouldbemade forreleasingsporadicstate-ments.Perhapsevenoneayearcouldputanendto any speculation on Schumacher’s condition.

However, not even this is likely to satisfysome circles of the media. The inevitable courseof events that would ensue is the likely reasonfor the family remaining silent.

In a society where respect and ethics are rare

commodities it will undoubtedly prompt tab-loids to analyse every word, hire so-called ex-perts to comment and ultimately prompt morespeculation.

Most recently, a statement by former Ferraripresident Luca di Montezemolo has prompteda fresh batch of speculation. Montezemolo wasquoted as saying that he has “no good news”about Michael Schumacher.

“I have news of him continuously and it is notgood,”hesaid. It ispuzzlingwhythe formerFer-rari boss would make such a statement whichhas given rise to new-found conjecture. He sure-ly knows the family’s position on sharing infor-mation.

Most of the interest in Schumacher’s condi-tion is born from a place of genuine concern andnot morbidity. But the best that Michael’s le-gions of fans can do is to respect the family’swishes for privacy. And accept that if there wasanything to share that they would do so.

Until then, keep fighting Michael.

The truthaboutMichael Schumacher

A PE sports administrator who has alwaysstriven to serve his country as team manager, canfinally tickoff that lifegoal fromhisbucketlist.

Riaan Osman, deputy director of MadibazSport has been appointed manager of the SAU19 cricket team that competed in Bangladeshrecently.

“I was humbled by Cricket South Africa’sfaith in me,” said Osman.

“This was the first time that I’d worked witha team at this level and I wanted to ensure thattheir only focus was on the field of play. Myjob was to ensure that the rest was in place.”

Osman said the team were very disappoint-

ed, regarding the fact that SA were knockedout early after a shock two-wicket loss to Nam-ibia.

Before, he had worked with internationalteams such as Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Irelandand IPL giants Mumbai Indians.

Osman’s success has stemmed from build-ing a set of skills and then building more.

“Studying a sport qualification is notenough. You need to network during yourstudies and be prepared to accept job opportu-nities without any remuneration.

“At the same time, only settling to playcricket without studying or developing a tradeis not ideal,” he said. – REPORTER
