The goals of the Professional Development Workshop Series are to equip staff of youth-serving organizations with the tools necessary to help their clients succeed and provide high-quality, cost effective professional development opportunities for front-line workers.

GOLD STANDARD: Participants who successfully complete 4 modules in one particular concentration plus 2 electives will receive a Gold Standard Certificate – indicating that you have acquired advanced knowledge in a specific concentration (which will be listed on your certificate) and basic knowledge in the other concentrations.

SILVER STANDARD: Participants who successfully complete 4 modules in one particular concentration will receive a Silver Standard Certificate – indicating that you have acquired advanced knowledge in a specific concentration which will be listed on your certificate.

This comprehensive professional development training for youth service practitioners focuses on teaching critical supervisory skills to managers in educational, recreational, and residential programs. Through a condensed 4-hour intensive workshop, participants will share best practices, reflect on supervisory challenges, and problem-solve “here and now” issues. Participants will hone their supervisory skills and continue to build the capacity of staff to facilitate inclusive programming for youth with varied levels of needs. GRANT WRITING 101Thursday, September 26, 2013 / 10:00 AM-1:00 PM

FACILITATOR: Manoj Pardasani, PHD CONCENTRATION: Volunteer/Staff Management COST: Sliding Scale* Grant writing is a highly valued skill in non-profit agencies and organizations, but the process can be complicated and confusing at times. Both beginning and experienced grant writers will benefit from this comprehensive, informative session exploring the components of a successful grant proposal and the most common pitfalls agencies and organizations face when competing for grants. Participants will look at the importance of developing a solid evaluation plan and the significance of including best practices into program development. Attention will be given to what makes programs and proposals most effective and how to increase the probability of funding. Through this workshop, participants will: • Receive a thorough overview of the ingredients of a

winning proposal• Learn the difference between grants and contracts• Receive up-to-date information on trends in giving• Practice incorporating literature review to ascertain

FACILITATOR: Kate Nammacher, MPH CONCENTRATION: Volunteer/Staff Management COST: Sliding Scale* Have you been running what feels like a good program without any measurement of success? If you’ve been thrown into a program without clear goals, objectives or a path to reach them or you have a great idea that you haven’t been able to turn into a program yet, this workshop is for you! Through interactive exercises and small group discussion, participants will gain the skills they need to evaluate and develop successful programs. Through this workshop, participants will: • Learn how to ascertain there is a client demand for

a particular program• Understand why it is important to think about evaluation

before you start your program• Know the difference between goals and objectives• Create a draft logic model for your program• Learn 3 techniques to collect data for needs

FACILITATOR: Angelie Singla CONCENTRATION: Volunteer/Staff Management COST: Sliding Scale*

Grant writing can seem like a daunting task but what do you do after you are lucky enough to receive funding? It is vital to be educated on grants from inception to implementation. Receiving the grant is not the end of the road, after you’re done celebrating your hard work, it is crucial to know what happens next. Learn how to manage the grant timeline, develop relationships with all involved, and how to monitor your funds. These are just a few topics that will be addressed during the workshop. Through this workshop, participants will: • Revisit the basic components of a successful proposal• Learn how to report on outcomes and/or deliverables • Identify how to ensure proper budget management within the

grant requirements• Explore how proper communication and reporting can strengthen

relationships with funders and potentially lead to future funding

CULTIVATING PEACE: BULLYING PREVENTION BEST PRACTICESTuesday, October 29, 2013 / 10:00 AM-1:00 PM

FACILITATOR: Beth E. Lilach, ABD, Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau CONCENTRATION: Youth Development COST: Sliding Scale* In the year 2013, bullying is not an issue youth workers can ignore. This workshop aims to help youth workers: understand bullying, gain skills for prevention and response, and educate youth about these same issues. Bullying comes in a variety of forms. Participants will become aware of how different kinds of bullying manifest, including: cyber, emotional, verbal, gender-based, sexual, and physical bullying. They will also learn the impact bullying has on all participants, bystanders as well as targets and aggressors. Distinguishing bullying from normal forms of conflict will be addressed in this workshop and participants will also engage in a variety of activities to explore their own prejudices and how they affect our interactions with others. Through this workshop, participants will: • Learn the roles people choose during incidents of bullying

and intolerance• Understand how bystanders allow/push violence to escalate• Discuss differences between bullying and “normal” conflict• Cultivate awareness of their own biases• Master effective ways to intervene in incidents

This training will introduce the different positive youth development theories and will help youth serving professionals move from working with youth through a problem-focused approach to a strengths perspective approach. Participants will leave with the tools and confidence to apply positive youth development practices to their programs. WORKSHOPSTOP TEN SKILLS OF A SUCCESSFUL OST PROFESSIONAL Tuesday, November 5, 2013 / 10:00 AM-1:00 PM

FACILITATOR: Kiana Walbrook, MPA CONCENTRATION: Youth Development / Group Facilitation COST: Sliding Scale* Working with youth clients, although often rewarding, can also be challenging. This is especially the case when working in the OST environment. Setting boundaries, keeping youth involved, meeting program objectives while responding to the needs of youth, and effectively collaborating with co-workers are all important components for the OST worker. This workshop takes a close look at the key areas that are necessary to be a successful OST professional. Through this workshop, participants will: • Review the basics of group work as a foundation to effective

classroom management• Learn how to effectively manage the different relationships

in the OST environment• Explore ways to keep youth involved and motivated• Utilize the top 10 skills of successful OST professionals

to build an effective program plan

ENGAGING YOUTH WITH SPECIAL NEEDS Thursday, November 14, 2013 / 10:00 AM-1:00 PM

FACILITATOR: Shane Kulman, MS SpEd CONCENTRATION: Group Work & Youth Development COST: Sliding Scale* Learn how to engage and empower youth with special needs, including children who are not able to learn in traditional ways. Participants will learn the different learning styles and how to observe, assess, and plan, so that each child is taught in the specific way that they learn. The training will review goals typically addressed in the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) and the best methods for reaching these goals. Caregivers will hear different special education methodologies in order to integrate what works from each, to benefit the specific child. Participants will also learn behavior modifications and group facilitation skills that work with children of any age. These modifications can be implemented easily and used to help the child be successful, and the youth worker to control the session. Youth workers will walk away feeling empowered to improve the learning outcomes of their youth along with gaining tools to manage their own stress. Through this workshop, participants will: • Learn how to use a token economy with youth • Master skills to engage and promote the growth of youth

with special needs • Create a developmentally appropriate visual schedule for youth • Learn to integrate movement activities that activate the brain and

calm the body to manage challenging and oppositional behaviors

WORKSHOPSVOLUNTEER VICTORY: WINNING STRATEGIES TO RECRUIT AND RETAIN VOLUNTEERS Thursday, November 21, 2013 / 10:00 AM-1:00 PM

FACILITATOR: Michael Coughlin, LMSW CONCENTRATION: Volunteer/Staff Management COST: Sliding Scale* If you’re struggling getting volunteers through the door of your organization, this workshop will help you break new ground. The goal of this workshop is to build a creative and comprehensive recruiting strategy targeted toward the needs of your organization while getting the most from the resources your organization has available. Focusing on volunteer recruitment and retention, participants will gain insight from case studies of organizations that shifted their recruitment messaging and efforts. Participants will strategize on how to build their own targeted recruitment campaign and will leave feeling re-energized and ready to recruit! Through this workshop, participants will: • Learn how to create a volunteer job description• Learn targeted recruitment procedures• Learn how to design a recruitment message• Discover how to improve recruitment through the use of technology

YOUTH EMPOWERMENT THROUGH THE ARTS Tuesday, December 3, 2013 / 10:00 AM-1: 00 PM

FACILITATOR: Jen Skees, MSW CONCENTRATION: Youth Development & Group Facilitation COST: Sliding Scale* Discover new ways to empower youth through engaging arts-based activities. The arts have the power to heal, develop strong communities, enhance self-confidence and teach youth to connect with and relate to others. Expressive arts activities encourage youth to find their own voice within a safe space where they can create and take healthy risks. This workshop will bring youth practitioners together to strengthen techniques and develop new skills and resources for educating and empowering youth through a variety of expressive art forms ranging from visual arts, writing, movement and more. Come prepared to get creative!

Through this workshop, participants will: • Learn techniques to create a safe and supportive

environment for youth to grow creatively & emotionally• Understand best practices of Arts Based Community

Development (ABCD) and engaging a group through expressive arts-based activities

• Learn to promote collaboration and self-efficacy building techniques through the arts

• Learn to increase self-awareness and reflection in regard touse of non-verbal interventions with youth

BIOSMICHAEL COUGHLIN, LMSWis the Chief Quality Assurance Officer of Big Brothers Big Sisters NYC. Michael is a Licensed Master Social Worker and received his MSW degree from Columbia University, and previously worked at St. Barnabas Hospital and the New York Foundling. Having been part of the Big Brothers Big Sisters of NYC staff for 8 years, Michael helped build the Center for Excellence, where he worked to improve customer service and served as the Director of Volunteer Recruitment for the past five years. During this time, he formulated our agency volunteer Affinity Groups, comprised of over 1,000 volunteers, mentors, and former mentors whose mission is to recruit more African-American, Latino, and Asian volunteers to help serve the city’s youth. Michael has developed volunteer recruitment strategies that currently produce 8,000 volunteer inquiries per year – representing a 60% increase over 5 years.

BETH LILACH, ABD is the Senior Director of Education and Community Affairs at the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center located on Long Island. She is on the Executive Board and Education Committee of the Nassau County Task Force on Bias Crimes and serves on the Advisory Board for the Nassau County Commission on Human Rights. Beth is a member of myriad professional organizations including African Studies Association, International Association of Genocide Scholars, and National Women’s Studies Association. In addition to Holocaust history, Beth’s research areas include: Comparative Genocide; Eugenics and Ethics; German Imperialism and Genocide in Africa; Women’s History; Historical and Current Slavery; and Bullying and Hate Crime Prevention.

SHANE B. KULMAN, MS SpEdis the founder of Your Beautiful Child LLC. Your Beautiful Child is a practice that encompasses holistic approaches to find solutions for all caregivers, and children. Shane works with children, those with special needs, and neuro-typically developing children. Shane coaches parents, family members and siblings to look to one another as support systems. Along with being a special education therapist, Shane is a published author, and a certified practitioner of Yoga for the Special Child®. She leads yoga/movement classes for children as well as adults. Shane has been training with The Open Door Acting Company, and incorporates the Brain Gym® method into her sessions and workshops. KAWANA MCINNIS, RAMAPO FOR CHILDRENhas worked in youth development for more than 15 years as an educator, supervisor, trainer, coach, and mentor. She has served as a New York City Department of Education teacher, a youth development trainer for faith-based organizations, an education specialist for children in foster care, and an educational program director for Advantage After School Programs. Kawana is a certified Center for Development and Human Services (CDHS) trainer for foster parents and an associate pastor for young people. She is a graduate of the DeVos Urban Leadership Initiative, obtained her B.A. in Psychology from Brooklyn College, and is currently pursuing a master’s in Divinity.

KATE NAMMACHER, MPHhas over 15 years of experience in the non-profit sector, with a focus on youth development, program planning, evaluation, mentoring, and training and professional development. She has trained hundreds of youth service providers and volunteers, from organizations across the Tri-State area. Now a Non-Profit Consultant, Kate brings her experience from her work at organizations such as the Guttmacher Institute, The Advertising Council, Community Healthcare Network and Big Brothers Big Sisters of NYC to help clients create, improve and evaluate their programs. Kate holds a Master of Public Health degree in Maternal and Child Health from the University of California at Berkeley, with a focus on adolescence.

MANOJ PARDASANI, PHD, LCSW, ACSWis an Associate Professor at the Fordham University Graduate School of Social Service. Dr. Pardasani has worked as a clinical social worker and an administrator in a number of practice settings involving work with seniors, developmental disabilities, HIV/AIDS, dual diagnosis, and homelessness. Dr. Pardasani serves on the Boards of the National Institute of Senior Centers (NISC), Grants, Inc. and the Center for Regional Excellence (CRE). He is the Co-Chair of the Social Welfare Action Alliance (SWAA) and the Southwestern Social Work Association (SSSA-SW). His academic research interests include macro-practice issues and community-based interventions, as well as evaluating the role of social work in community-level interventions that address social issues. Dr. Pardasani is also a consultant for the Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York City’s Mentoring Supervisor Certificate Program.

ANGELIE SINGLA, MSWis a solid development professional with over ten years of experience in the non-profit sector. Currently, she is the Director of Institutional Giving at Big Brothers Big Sisters of NYC. She is responsible for retaining and growing the existing portfolio of foundation and government partnerships. Previously, as Assistant Director of Program and Resource Development at Fund for Public Health in New York, Angelie was responsible for submitting several successful federal, state, foundation, and corporate grant applications. While in graduate school, she worked at Palladia, Inc., Sakhi for South Asian Women, Coalition for Asian American Children and Families,and the UJA-Federation of New York. Previously, she was a Site Director/Parent Coordinator at the Forest Hills Community House, where she developed and facilitated programs, classes, and workshops for students, parents, and staff. Angelie is on the Board of Directors of Community Mediation Services, has served as a Team Leader for the Grants Advisory Committee of the New York Women’s Foundation, and has been a member of the Asian Women Giving Circle. She earned a MSW in Social Enterprise Administration from Columbia University and a BBA in Management from Pace University.

JEN SKEES, MSWis the Associate Program Manager of the Center for Training and Professional Development at Big Brothers Big Sisters of NYC (BBBS of NYC). Jen has extensive experience working within the non-profit sector, international community, and youth service organizations. She has developed educational and recreational programs for children in Nepal, provided counseling and expressive arts-based group work with refugees and asylum seekers at the International Institute of New Jersey, and advocated for the rights of women and children within the United Nations. She manages and facilitates the Professional Development workshop series, and provides volunteer training sessions. Jen holds a Master in International Social Work and Client-Centered Management from Fordham University Graduate School of Social Service.

KIANA WALBROOK, MPA is the Director of the Center for Training and Professional Development at Big Brothers Big Sisters of NYC and has been with the agency for over five years. Kiana has over 13 years of extensive experience working within youth service sectors, Community-Based Organizations, Faith-Based Organization, and afterschool programs. She provides comprehensive on-site technical assistance, curriculum development, training, and professional development for hundreds of non-profit organizations. Currently, she manages and facilitates the Mentoring Supervisor Certificate Program; the only graduate level mentoring program in the nation, and provides volunteer training sessions and a variety of workshops for the Professional Development Workshop Series. Her expertise in alternative education, training facilitation, and youth development comes from her experience as an Educational Coordinator/GED Instructor at New Life of New York City Inc. Kiana holds a Master in Public Administration and Policy from Metropolitan College of New York. Kiana facilitates a diverse array of workshops including topics covering: Communication, Critical Issues, Mentoring Supervision, Youth Development, and Diversity.

POLICIES AND PROCEDURES• If payment is not received on or before the date

of the workshop, the registered participant will be responsible for settling the account and making payment within 10 days.

• Participants who have made arrangements to make cash payment on the day of the workshop must bring exact amounts. Change will not be available on-site.

• Should a paid registrant miss the workshop, no refunds will be given. However, the Center offers a credit in the form of a voucher, which can be used towards a future workshop within one year. Vouchers are not automatically issued, but are offered upon request. Requests must be made no later than 10 business days after the day of the missed workshop.

• Unpaid registrants who fail to notify us of cancellation 2 business days prior to the scheduled workshop will still be responsible for settling the account and making payment within 10 days.

• A 15% discount is available for groups of 3 or more from the same agency attending the same workshop. Discounts may not be spread over various workshops.

• Registrants are expected to arrive at least 10 minutes early to check-in for all workshops.

• Light refreshments are served during workshops.
