PHILOSOPHYThe Crystal Recreation Department provides opportunities for involvement in a wide range of active and passive leisure-time pursuits for all ages and abilities. This service is provided through professionally planned programs and utilization of city facilities as well as joint program and facility efforts through collaborations with other service agencies. It is the philosophy of the department that no person be deprived from an activity regardless of age, sex, religion, or mental, emotional, physical status.

BARNYARD BOOGIE (Activity 5451)Parents and children 7 years old and younger join us for a knee-slapping good time at the very popular Barnyard Boogie, where you can kick up your heels to some fun and crazy songs. A full size petting zoo will be there for you to enjoy. Refreshments of a Little Debbies snack cake and lemonade will be served. Parent participation required. Children under the age of one are free. FAMILY GEOCACHING (Activity 6173)Youth 9 years and older, with an adult can learn all about this popular recreational pursuit that brings technology and nature together. Geocaching is initiated by hiding a cache where others can find it. Come find

out what a cache is, where it can be properly hidden and how to record its location using a Global Positioning Unit (GPS) along with where to post the coordinates. There will even be time to test your skills as we find a cache. This is a great family friendly activity to enjoy the outdoors offered in cooperation with the Three Rivers Park District. Class will meet at the Visitor Center. TARGET CENTER & XCEL ENERGY CENTER EVENTS Get tickets for great events! The cities of Crystal, Brooklyn Center, Golden Valley, Robbinsdale and New Hope are joining together to offer great ticket deals for upcoming events at both the Target Center and the Xcel Energy Center. This is for children and adults of all ages! A limited number of tickets are available; however, 15 tickets need to be sold to ensure the group rate. Ticket pick-up: Participants will be notified when tickets are available for pickup at the Recreation office. Youth ages 6-11 will learn real fencing skills while having fun in our special Musketeers Fencing Class! With an emphasis on skill building, concentration, self discipline and fun, these classes are designed to enhance motor skill, social and perceptual growth by teaching safe, age-appropriate foil fencing skills to each child. SKATEBOARD CAMPS AT 3RD LAIRFor the expert to beginners and everybody in between. Youth ages 6 and older learn the basics like balance, pushing, dropping in, skatepark safety and etiquette. 3rd Lair instructors are very experienced in the sport and have years of teaching knowledge. Equipment needed: skateboard and helmet. Knee pads, elbow pads and wrist guards are strongly recommended. All equipment is available at no extra charge. Once your registration is received, you will be sent a special waiver form along with more additional information. Parents must provide transportation to 3rd Lair. Open skating is available in the afternoon and is included in the fee. Parents can pick up anytime in the afternoon at your convenience. TRY ARCHERY (Activity 6185)Cooperative program with the cities of Crystal, New Hope and Robbinsdale along with the Orion Archery. This one-day workshop for youth ages 7 years and older with an adult will let you try the sport of archery. Learn the basic

safety and shooting techniques along with some of the traditions of the sport. Orion Archery will provide equipment/bows, arrows, targets and safety equipment along with certified NADA and ASAP Instructors. Program will be held on field by the Robbinsdale Com-munity Gym & Fitness Center if weather permits; otherwise will be held in the Robbinsdale Community Gym. KID SMART (Activity 6186)How should you react when approached by a harmful stranger or the local bully? Mas-ter Malone, a martial arts expert, teaches youth how to respond quickly to ‘no win’ situations. Youth ages 5-12, will learn how to take action (including how to get out of holds and what to say) and how to show the confidence needed to take control of the situation. Kids should wear comfort-able, loose-fitting clothing. (A parent may attend at no additional cost). Do you need a little more time to get that turkey stuffed? Does your young artist ages 5-12 love to get messy? YOUTH BASKETBALL LEAGUESRecreational basketball leagues for 2nd-6th graders. Practices begin mid-January, with days and times varying due to gym and coach’s availability. Coaches will call team members after January 8 with practice times. Teams are coached by volunteers. Practice sites include: Meadowlake, Neill, Northport, Forest and Crystal Community Center. Games will be played at the Crystal Community Center and the Davis Community Center (Meadowbrook Elementary), 5430 Glenwood Avenue N. This program is co-sponsored with the City of Golden Valley, Robbinsdale and St. Louis Park and will include teams from all cities. The focus of the program is to teach the skills of basketball, playing as a team, and teaching good sportsmanship. Standings are not kept and there is no tournament play. Register your child for the correct division based on his/her grade. Players are allowed to play one grade level up. Do not ask us to make exceptions. Scrimmage Day will be January 15, with games beginning January 22 and ending March 12, 2011 (8 games). The Department reserves the right to limit the number of players per team, and the right to combine divisions if registration is not sufficient and to cancel a team if a volunteer coach cannot be found. Kentucky Park gets a new playgroundThe twenty-year-old playground at Kentucky Park has finally been replaced with a new structure. The old playground was one of the last of the second generation of playgrounds installed in Crystal. The new equip-ment, curbing and surfacing cost about $50,000 and should last just

as long as the old play structure recently removed. In fact, the new equipment is made by the same manufacture as the old, GameTime. There are 11 elevated play components and 7 ground level compo-nents on the main structure. Included in these are a climbing wall, two slides and multiple climbing events. Additionally there are 4 swings (two belt seats and two tot seats) and a smaller structure for the younger, 2-5 year olds.

The Crystal Parks and Recreation Depart-ments is actively seeking community or neighborhood-oriented groups to join the PARK PRIDE program. This program fits nicely with groups look-ing for a community service project

or neighborhood groups that want to clean up, beautify and develop pride in

the parks in our community. This program requires a minimum of two clean-up visits to a specific park location in a one-year period, and/or to provide a “Park Watch” service on a year-round basis. The Park Pride program is open to community groups, civic organizations, churches, families and individual citizens. The park site is chosen on a first-come, first-serve basis. For more information or to participate in the PARK PRIDE program, contact the Crystal Recreation Department.

The Bassett Creek dog park is approximately one acre in size and is completely fenced. Tables and benches provide resting spots for pet owners while their pets wear themselves out giving chase to their buddies. As the newly planted trees mature, shade will become a welcome addition to the area. Fresh water will be available.

The dog park was built with donated funds and materials. We would like to thank all the dedicate volunteers who made this park possible.

The dog park has become immensely popular with pets and pet owners. All are wel-come to visit as long as all behave and follow the simple rules. The hours of the off-leash are the same as the park; lights are avail-able during the dark winter evenings.

• Bringing children under the age of 6 into the off-leash area is STRONGLY discouraged. All children should be closely supervised by an adult.

• Dogs must be leashed prior to entering and leaving the off-leash area.

• Owners must have verbal control of their pet(s) and must prevent aggressive behavior and excessive barking. Aggres-sive dogs must be removed immediately.

• Never leave dogs unattended. Owners are legally responsible for their dogs and any injuries or damage caused by them.

• Pets need to be properly licensed and vaccinated.• Owners must clean up and properly dispose of feces.• Dogs in heat are not allowed inside the park.• Dogs registered as dangerous in any jurisdiction are not

Failure to abide by these rules may result in loss of privileges or owners may receive a citation.

2. Groups wishing to remain after above hours need a special permit from the City Manager.

3. No unauthorized vehicles allowed in park areas.

4. No picnic fires allowed except in designated areas.

5. No person shall mark, deface, disfig-ure, or tamper with any piece of park property.

6. Throw or discard any debris or garbage in proper receptacles. Glass bottles and containers are not allowed in the park.

7. The presence of beer and liquor in parks is prohibited except by special permit from the City Council.

8. No person shall destroy or injure animal wildlife.

9. No person shall offer for sale, rent, or hire any article or thing.

10. Activities shall only be conducted in designated areas within parks.

11. Dogs must be effectively leashed by a leash not in excess of 6 feet. Per-sons with leashed dogs must possess utensils for removing animal waste.

12. Persons shall not damage flowers or plant life in city parks.

13. No in-line skates, skateboards on tennis courts, playground equipment or on Becker stage.

14. All rules and regulations shall be strictly enforced. The City Manager may prepare further regulations for conduct in the parks.

?CAN I CANCEL OR SWITCH TO ANOTHER CLASS?Yes. If you need to cancel a class due to illness, moving or sched-ule conflict, notify us before the first class. A refund form will be sent to you. Return it to us within 10 business days and a refund will be sent from the Finance Department within 30 days. Forms returned after 10 days will not be accepted for processing. A $5 ser-vice fee will be charged on all refunds. Exception: Any event that requires us to pre-order or purchase tickets that are nonrefundable are not subject to a refund. Transfers are possible on a space-avail-able basis. A $5 service fee will be charged on all transfers.

WHAT IF THE CLASS IS FULL OR A MINIMUM IS NOT REACHED?All activities have minimum and maximum registrations. When class maximums are reached, no further registrations are accepted and waiting lists are formed. You will be contacted only if your registration can be accepted from the waiting list. When a class minimum has not been reached, the class will be cancelled and the entire fee will be refunded.

GENERAL CLASS INFORMATION• Report to the first class listed. Instructors do not call unless

specified in the class description.• Activities are planned for the specific age groups listed. Do not

ask us to make exceptions.• Class attendance is limited to participants. Spectators, including

LIABILITYThe Crystal Recreation Department recommends all participants carry adequate insurance. The City of Crystal assumes no respon-sibility for personal injuries or loss of personal belongings while using City recreation facilities or parks.

DATA PRIVACY ADVISORYThe registered participant’s name, address and phone number will only be made available to program staff, the City’s insurer and attorney and to others connected with the program for purposes of administering the activity and providing you with notice of sched-uling changes.

TIME SENSITIVE INFORMATIONThe Crystal City Newsletter takes two weeks to deliver via Postal Carrier Presort. Therefore, some of the events may have taken place by the time the last postal patrons receive their copies. We have included this time-sensitive information because it reaches the majority of residents in time.

INCLUSIONSInclusion facilitators are provided for children and adults with disabilities who would like to participate in our programs. First register for the program, then call 952-988-4176 to discuss theneeds/accommodation needed at least 2 weeks before the start of the program. Service provided through REACH for Resources.

FEE ASSISTANCEThe Crystal Recreation Department strives to make their programs as accessible as possible, regardless of ability to pay or income. Assistance is available to Crystal residents under the age of 18 who would like to participate in a program and cannot afford normal registration fees. Individuals are required to pay at least 20 percent of the program fee. A limited amount of assistance is available. For more information on this confidential program call the Depart-ment at 763-531-0052. Note that fee assistance is only available to Crystal residents and only towards Crystal Recreation programs. Fee assistance does not apply to special events and activities. The Recreation Department has the right to determine which programs are applicable towards activity assistance.

PHOTOGRAPHIC CONSENTThe City occasionally takes photographs of participants in the City’s park and recreation programs. The photographs may be published in City brochures, newsletters, and other City publica-tions, or otherwise made public for the purpose of promoting these programs and providing information to the public about park and recreation activities within the City. The photographs are private data and cannot be released by the City without your permission. You are not required to authorize the use of your photograph in order to participate in the City’s park and recreation programs, but if you refuse to do so it will be more difficult for the City to promote and provide information about these programs.
