Sameer HandaCEO, Patton Group of Companies

We at Patton Group are going through some really exciting times. Since my last message we have had a change of ownership in late March this year which has been really rewarding for us. Now we are owned by Beijer Ref

of Sweden, who not only have an excellent understanding of refrigeration & HVAC businesses but also understand how to build & support businesses globally.

The news about Beijer acquiring Realcold in both New Zealand and Australia is fantastic news for the industry here in this part of the world. For now, we will have direct access to the latest technologies and the best practices as adopted by the Scandinavian countries that are at the forefront in our industry globally.

We just finished our fourth consecutive month of record sales in July and are now heading towards a slow period for the next couple of months before it starts all over again.

We have had excellent growth in the kiwifruit sector along with the dairy sector. Other industries like apple, meat, wine and hospitality are all doing quite well too.

At the end of July we had our annual management meetings for both New Zealand and Australia operations in Auckland and Melbourne respectively. We also held a session in Auckland to recognise some of the long service staff. We had several new staff joining the Patton family as well as current staff changing portfolios and taking on more responsibilities.

Enjoy reading this newsletter as we have got some great stories here for you!

MESSAGE FROM OUR CEO

Patton NZ Annual Branch Manager Meeting21-23 July 2015

Head Office in Auckland once again hosted the annual New Zealand Branch Managers Meeting, on 21-23 July. The theme was: “Patton – The Next Chapter”.

Fortunately the weather was excellent. Day 1 started off with a walk to the top of the Auckland Harbour Bridge. We received commentary explaining the engineering and man hours it took to erect this masterpiece. During our two hour exploration, three of our staff namely, Richard, David and Phil, were brave to take up a spontaneous challenge of bungy jumping from the Harbour Bridge. The view from the top was simply magnificent.

- UMESH THAKUR

After an eventful morning we returned to Carbine Road, time to get serious with what we do best, running a successful business. Sameer started the meeting with his presentation followed by the Branch Managers’ presentations that flowed over into the next day. After a great 1st quarter, the confidence and morale of the team is at an all-time high. Cameron Fearon of Palmerston North was awarded for best presentation.

We continued the tradition of “turn off the phone” t shirt. Harvey, Alddon, Wayne, Phil and Stuart were victims - their phones rang during the meeting, it must be mentioned though that some underhand tactics were employed and people were “setup”.

On Day 3, we hosted a BBQ lunch for all staff to celebrate three things - long service awards for 2015, presence of branch managers and a brilliant 1st quarter of the year (especially being under Beijer’s umbrella).

Staff in the photos on the right received their respective awards. Also Fleur - Tauranga, Shane - Nelson and Colin - Wellington completed their 5 years of service along with Sameer who has recently passed the milestone of 20 years of service at Patton.

Day 2 ended with team activity – at Escapade in the city. Four teams of five were each locked in different mystery rooms. We needed to decipher a set of tricky clues and puzzles and escape within 60 minutes. Team 4 was the triumphant winner followed by Team 3 in second place. The day concluded with dinner at a restaurant where we enjoyed delicious European dining.

To our way of thinking these meetings must be about team, sharing, knowledge building and having fun - we believe we achieved all of that during this period of three days.

Thank you Vanessa, Dio and others for all your help in making this event a success.

Patton Nelson Customer Service staff member Shane Andrews and his wife Nicole arrived home recently after a busy weekend at the hip hop competition.

Their daughters Zariyah and Shylah participated as a duo (called ICONIC) at the NZ Dance Summit Competition. They competed in the Novice Section against other duos and crews ranging from 9-26 year olds. It was a tough competition with so much talent being presented from all over NZ.

Zariyah and Shylah were presented with the ‘Most Promising Performer’ award from Rina Chae, who they both idolise for her work with famous celebrities such as Beyonce and Justin Bieber.

Placed first in the Novice Section the girls were awarded a trophy for their outstanding performance and were overwhelmed with the comments received from both the judges and the audience. The result justified the many long hours of practise and hard work required for this competition and did their choreographer Ashley Belk proud.

HEAT IS ON MILK COOLING SYSTEMS

- JO BAILEY | NZ DAIRY WINTER 2015

If they haven’t already done so, a high percentage of New Zealand dairy farmers will soon have to up-grade their refrigeration systems in order to meet

new milk cooling requirements’ says Paul Donderwinkel, Director of Matamata temperature control specialists, Centigrade.

“In response to market pressure, the Ministry of Primary Industries and representatives of various dairy companies are implementing a new, across-the-board standard which is due to take effect before June 2016. The changes have being well publicised, so it is imperative farmers start to plan for them.

The new recommendations state raw milk will have to be cooled to 10c or below within 4 hours of the commence-ment of milking; and to 6c or below within 6 hours of the commencement of milking and 2 hours of completion.

The milk must be held at this temperature until collection or the next milking.”

Donderwinkel says ‘because the majority of New Zealand farms do not have the luxury of “super cold” ground or first stage precooling water, farmers will need to add an extra or second stage of precooling to their refrigeration systems in order to gain compliance to the new regulations.

The traditional two-stage generic milk cooling systems found on most farms simply won’t comply.’

He says farmers have four main options – using a traditional milk storage vat to cool down a bulk store of water; cooling a bulk store of water in a concrete or plastic insulated tank; using an ice bank; or using Glycol, a water and antifreeze mix.

“All these options are capable of doing the job. it’s just a matter of getting expert help to find the most appropriate solution. The costs of the various systems will vary from farm to farm due to sizing and individual requirements, but one thing they have in common is that each of these systems removes heat from the milk by pumping the chilled water medium through a second pass of the plate cooler prior to entering the vat. Some even use the chilled medium to cool the milk in the traditional DX vat base.”

One of the biggest challenges facing the farm refrigeration industry are ‘snake oil salesmen: bringing sub-standard product into the country’ he says.

“Farmers also need to be aware there are non-indus-try companies who have seen an apparent opportuni-ty to make a quick buck and are selling cheap import-ed, sub-standard equipment. There is a lot of flashy

advertising and marketing going on, and also a lot of misinformation out there.”

To ensure their systems meet compliance, are high quality, and are backed with good service and parts, Donderwinkel says it is recommended farmers deal with industry certified companies or individuals, such as those affiliated with CCCA or IRHACE.

“Refrigeration is a field of engineering where heat rejection or removal can be calculated. It is imperative farmers ensure the sales representative they deal with can back up their claims mathematically, as well as have the practical experience required to provide them with the correct information and products for their operation.

A reputable refrigeration sales firm should present all the options and costs to the farmer, considering everything from system performance, energy efficiency and power availability to site and service access, and the capacity for future growth.”

Centigrade has a fleet of more than 10 service vehicles available to service farm refrigeration requirements within a 45 minute radius of Matamata.

The firm deals with a handful of clients every week for whom it has to fix cheap, or badly installed equipment, he says.

“A lot has changed in refrigeration over the last 5 years, particularly with refrigerants and their specific require-ments. With more new regulations coming in, farmers should definitely choose reputable local companies that can provide a sustainable product, backed by service and availability to off-the-shelf parts.

Refrigeration is business critical for the farmer. They can’t afford to have downtime because of breakdowns or systems that don’t meet the grade.”

Having picked up the cycling bug 2 years ago, I can only look back and see how far I have come. Now racing at the elite level in New Zealand it takes a lot of training to keep up the fitness, even during the cold, wet and windy

winter months. The thought of big races keep my motivation up, where I hope to come out of winter with a good base to work from for summer racing. I ride approximately 12-15 hours a week which is about 400-500km - I realised this is more than what my car does! I hope to compete in multiple events this year, including the K2 where I placed 6th last year. The photo is of the recent Auckland road race champs where I placed 2nd.

People say I do well considering I also work full-time. I say it’s all about the balance, but it’s good to get out on the bike at the end of the day and burn off what energy I have left. All I have left in the evening is a couple of hours to relax and refuel. Staying safe is key so I can come to work each day, being hit twice I am well aware of the things some cars do to get past.

This year I became a Futureintech Ambassador, which is basically going into schools to promote engineering and explaining what path I took to become one. My recent visit to Kings College was a great success with students engaging in my presentation while I explained what I did at university and at Patton.

Hi Cameron, thank you very much for speaking to the YR10 boys at Kings College last week in their fabulous lecture theatre. I think you did a great job overall with your PowerPoint presentation, it was humorous and interesting. I think we all really enjoyed the robot wars vid-eo’s you added, perfect for a bunch of boys to watch! You also did a won-derful job of engaging students with your enthusiasm about your job and to such a large group for your first visit. So well done.

Australia Managers MeetingPatton Australia recently held its Managers Meeting in the Melbourne Northern suburb of Preston in the prestigious Bell City.Starting on Thursday the 23rd of July we discussed the previous three months and after a brief review from all the Managers we discussed how the Branches have been travelling to date and where we are going well and what we need to improve on.

After this we spent the afternoon discussing the Budget going forward as well as issues and solutions surrounding IT, SQL Reporting, Accounts, SLOB Stock, Branch presentation and Freight. We were also joined in the afternoon by Sam Wu and Steve Doncaster who provided a great insight into where we are heading with IT down the track.

That night we were joined by Gavin and John from Rockhampton and Gladestone, Owen Forsyth from Perth and Craig Killalea from Albury for Dinner at Gracias Restaurant in Melbourne’s famous Lygon St for Dinner.

The next morning we were greeted first up by our CEO Sameer Handa who shared with us some of Beijer’s direction for us as well as some insight into how Beijer is doing worldwide. Everyone was in agreement that Beijer and Patton make up a great

combination and the future seems very bright with these guys as our Support.

Next up was Alan Green and Peter Tiivel from Danfoss who went on to give us a very informative presentation on Danfoss Strategies and products alike, needless to say the team is very excited about getting access to the Danfoss product and we believe it is going to be an exciting part of Patton’s growth going forward.

After a Brief presentation from the Joint ventures on what they are up to we had lunch and then we were joined by Graeme Dewerson, Sales Manag-er of A-GAS to discuss new products, phase out of HFC’s, replacement Gases and much more. As usual Graeme delivered and informative and up beat presentation for all to understand.

GM’sMG

Where did you develop an interest for classic cars? From a young age I have had an interest in old cars. When I was in my teens I purchased a Model A with the intention of restoring it. Eventually I sold it but it still had quite a lot of work to be done on it. Several years later I discovered it had been fully restored and was in storage in my girlfriends (now my wife) grandmother’s garage. Over the years I have attended numerous car shows and I always purchase the latest Classic Car magazine when I am at an airport and about to travel.

Why did you purchase an MG?I have always liked English classic cars and in particular the MG’s. Also they are more affordable than some other models of English cars.

How long have you had your MG and what model is it?I purchased the car in January 2014, the model is a 1954 TF 1500.

Do you know anything about the car’s history?I purchased the car from Orange in NSW, the owner at the time struggled to get in and out of the car because of his arthritis so reluctantly he decided to sell it.

The car was once owned by Dr Victor Chang, a well-known and gifted heart surgeon who was tragically shot dead in a botched robbery in Sydney in 1991. Dr Chang fully restored the car with his uncle.

How often do you drive the MG?

I try to take it out each weekend; the weather plays a role in how often the car is driven. I haven’t driven it in the rain as it isn’t waterproof!

Have you met up with any other MG owners?

Yes, I have joined the Sunshine Coast MG Car Club. They are quite a social group, there is a weekend run once a month which ends at a pub for a meal, the runs are often quite long, sometimes up to 200km in total. Also once a month there is a Nog ‘n Natter at a local eatery where everyone gathers for a meal and chat.

is a British automotive marque registered by the defunct MG Car Company Limited, a British sports car manufacturer begun in the 1920s as a sales promotion sideline

within W R Morris’s Oxford city retail sales and service business by the business’s manager, Cecil Kimber.Best known for its two-seat open sports cars, MG also produced saloons and coupés. Kimber was an employee of William Morris; MG are the initials for Morris Garages.

Stuart Smith, Australia GM, recently fulfilled a life-long dream to own a classic car.

Patton Australia at AIRAH Trade Night in Melbourne

The annual AIRAH trade night season has kicked off, with

more than 120 attend-ees popping by to gain HVAC guidance from the experts at Melbourne’s Flemington Racecourse - a large venue which quickly ran short on space with the flurry of interest.

The Patton Australia team were on hand to provide specialist advice on refrigeration and air-conditioning technology and its application in the supermarket, dairy, food production and wineries industries, whilst providing a sugar hit for many weary eyed guests.

The Patton team members are looking forward to attending the next trade nights as the AIRAH road show makes its way around the country.

Melbourne holds the notoriety of being the big-

gest sporting city in the world. And one of its most iconic events is the Melbourne Cup (The Race That Stops the Nation) held at Flemington Race-course. At its inception back in 1840, when the first race was held on the property, it was simply called The Mel-bourne Race Course. By the late 1850’s it was renamed Fleming-ton Racecourse.

Back then the site was technically governed by NSW - it was the Governor of NSW who ordered that the 352 acres be considered a public racecourse in 1848, and then appointed 6 trustees of the property. Later in 1871 the government passed the Victorian Racing Club Act making

the club trustees of the racecourse.

The VRC was formed in 1864 after a couple of earlier rival clubs disbanded to create the new club. The Melbourne Cup is recorded forever in history with winners such as our famous Phar Lap, Archer, Kingston Rule, and Rogan Josh.

Fast-forward to 2015 and the VRC put a tender out for total refurbishment of its main commercial kitchen area. Pat-ton was approached to tender our equip-ment through a local contractor, Impact Re-frigeration. Director, Clayton Skinner, gave us the opportunity to provide a competitive solution of supplying 11 condensing units and 13 evaporators. The

project all up including pipe, refrigerant and all ancillaries was worth approximately $70k.

The project included 10 cool-rooms, 3 freez-er rooms and a blast chiller/freezer and was completed from start to finish without any hiccups. Patton supplied open style units ranging from CCK225’s right up to a CL1500 and all were supplied fully kitted including pre wired.

I, for one, will look forward to going to Flemington this year and seeing the Patton units racked up above the betting ring while I am putting on a bet for the 2015 cup winner!

Acquisition strengthens Beijer Ref’s position in New Zealand and Australia

The Swedish refrigeration group, Beijer Ref AB, strengthens its operation in New Zealand and

Australia by acquiring the refrigeration wholesale company, Realcold, which has its head office in Auckland, New Zealand, and around 20 branches in New Zealand and Australia.

Beijer Ref is one of the largest refrigeration wholesalers in the world and the acquisition of Realcold is a significant step forward in the company’s strategy to grow outside Europe. Realcold was founded in 1955, reports annual sales of more than SEK 260M and is the second largest refrigeration wholesaler in New Zealand. With the acquisition, Beijer Ref becomes the largest refrigeration wholesaler in New Zealand.

, says Per Bertland, CEO of Beijer Ref.

In New Zealand, Realcold has 10 branches, 68 employees and sales of SEK 135M.

In Australia, the company has established an operation since 1999. Realcold has its distribution centre in Brisbane, eleven branches, 52 employees and sales of 157M.

“The company has a broad product portfolio with brands such as Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Tecumseh, Emerson Copeland and Gree. However, the range will now be complemented with Beijer Ref’s product programme. In addition to synergies on the purchasing side, we will contribute our European refriger-ation-technology expertise and contribute with new eco-friendly refrigeration technology in New Zealand and Australia”, continues Per Bertland.

The acquisition of Realcold together with our acquisition of the refrigeration wholesale companies, RNA Engineering & Trading in Malaysia and Patton in New Zealand, Australia, Thailand

and India, during the spring has given Beijer Ref a stable foothold in the Australasia region, with total sales approaching SEK 800M.

Realcold will be integrated into Beijer Ref’s organisation and is expected to be included in the consolidated accounts from October 2015. The acquisition is expected to have a marginal positive effect on Beijer Ref’s net income in 2015. The acquisition is subject to approval by the competition authorities in New Zealand.

New Zealand and Australia are interesting growth markets for Beijer Ref. With the large food exports and growing tourism industry of these countries, there is a significant need for efficient refrigeration plants

Patton IT Project UpdateWe are in the final stage of migrating the IT infrastructure away from NZPM. If everything goes well, the new infrastructure

will be live from the 10th Aug.

We are currently reconfiguring the PCs to access to our new servers. As a temporary measure all Australian users will be accessing citrix via the web browser.

New Zealand will be accessing greentree via their own desktop.

Citrix will be discontinued once the migration is complete. New Zealand will be accessing all the applications directly from the desktop while Australia will through a new programme called ‘RDS’.

All NZ users are already on the new email system.

Preparation to migrate Australia to the new email system has begun. We expect this to be completed by the early August.

We have rolled out the phone system across NZ and are adjusting how it works for us.

Given that Australia is currently using an independent phone system, more planning need to be done before we can rollout the new phone system to Australia.

NZ has completely moved to the new solarix network

All Australian branches are already on the new network.

The server hardware has been moved into our new Datacentre and they are ready to deploy.

Jason Pearce and Grant Mitchell attended a site visit to Quality Food

Service (QFS) in Stafford to see how the install by GT Refrigeration was going using our capital equipment. QFS is a major food distributor throughout Brisbane supplying both chilled and frozen products to schools and the food service industry.

This has been a big job for both GT Refrigeration and Patton, installing two large coolrooms and one large freezer room, with Jason Pearce taking care of the engineering in consulta-tion with Luke Inglis (GT Refrigeration). For the two coolrooms we supplied 2 x

CH1500 condensing units with 4 x JMC155 evapo-rators and 2 x PZB1500 PattonPaks with 2 x JMC230 evaporators. The freezer room has 3 x CSCL2200 con-densing units (Luke & Adam Inglis are pictured with one of these units) and 3 x JLC220 evaporators (picture of these 3 installed).

GT Refrigeration has had a great working relationship with Patton throughout the years and has proven to be one of our best customers at Patton Geebung.

Rugby Farms Going Great GunsRugby farms Stanthorpe storage depot has an existing 450kw Bitzer screw

rack with a selection of buffalo evaporators cooling two storage rooms and 2 fast cold rooms. The 2 fast coldrooms are being converted to storage

rooms while two new fast coldrooms are being built which will be cooled with 8 of Patton’s JMC605 evaporators.

On another site up the road has had a tandem set up with two Copeland D8 compressors which are both burnt out and will be replaced by two Copeland Streams which will now operate with the protection of Coresense. This system is also being used to trial the A-Gas Refrig Heal+h check.

Back at the main site at Gatton the bean shed has been completed operating with a 2 Copeland stream compressor rack achieving 160kw. The rack is being controlled with a Dixell Iprorack controller and a Emerson Infinity variable speed drive.

Patton has also supplied a 3 Copeland stream rack achieving 180kw for an in house built hydrocooler which has been operating well since commissioning.

I really enjoy dealing with Patton as I find the service and technical knowledge I receive with them to be second to none. The other wholesalers in the area struggle with the technical information or providing a decent service and the guys at Archerfield just knock that aspect out of the park. Couldn’t recommend them enough and will continue to be a loyal customer in years to come.

On 11-12 May 2015, Patton India team went for rafting camp at

Rishikesh which is about 232km from New Delhi. Rishikesh has earned the title of the river rafting capital of India. It’s one of the favourite destinations of every adventure enthusiast and rafting down the mighty Ganges is every adventure seekers dream come true.

The Patton team started out in the morning of 11th May and reached camp at around 2:30 in the afternoon. Our camp was located on the bank of the River Ganges. Surrounded by the beauty of nature and staying on the bank of India’s greatest river is one of the best experiences you can ever have.

In the late afternoon/evening of Day One a volleyball match was organised between team Patton and other localities on the river side beach, as well as more adventurous activities like rock climbing. The evening concluded on a high note with a gala time during which “Antakshri” was played around a bonfire organised by the camp. Antakshri is a spoken parlour game played in India. Each contestant sings the first verse of a (usually Bollywood) movie song that begins with the Hindustani consonant on which the previous contestant’s song selection ended.
