Reading Curriculum Writer Patricia Miller Patricia (Pat) Miller is a Reading Curriculum Writer at Schoolwide, Inc. With over 35 years of experience in the educational field, Pat has spent much of her career teaching students and subsequently teachers and principals in Prince George’s County Public Schools in Maryland. She began as a classroom teacher of middle and high school English and then worked as a reading specialist until 1989 when she became the Instructional Specialist for Reading/English Language Arts for the district. She went on to become the Supervisor of Reading/English Language Arts, the Coordinating Supervisor of the Academic Programs, the Director of Curriculum and Instruction and for a brief time, the Acting Chief Academic Officer. After retiring from the Prince George’s County Public School system, Pat has gone on to teach literacy courses at the University of Maryland and has begun to work with the District of Columbia Public Charter School Board as an educational consultant for curriculum design and literacy. She still helps to train the middle school teachers on reading and writing for Prince George’s County as well. Pat has written curriculum for the public school system in Charles County Maryland as well as designed the curricula used in Grades 6-8 for Prince George’s County. She also authored a booklet for the Public Charter School Board on curriculum design. In addition, she wrote the course used at University of Maryland University College on secondary reading and literacy. Pat has presented professionally on a variety of topics to several associations, including Building Classroom Libraries for NCTE; reading and writing strategies for the State of Maryland International Reading Association; literacy strategies for Bowie State College; and at the county level for teachers and principals in her beloved Prince George’s County. Pat was named an Outstanding Educator in Prince George’s County in 2006 and was in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers in 1992. Pat holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and a Master of Education degree in Reading, K–12 from the University of Maryland, College Park. In addition, Pat has completed her Administrator I and II, Educational Leadership and Policy Studies Certification from UMCP. If you ask people in her family, they would tell you that Pat has always been a teacher. As the oldest of four, she loved to play “school” with her brother and two sisters. In high school, her favorite assignment was to present new ideas to her classmates at Laurel High School in Prince George’s County. Yes, Pat’s love for teaching was grown in the very school system that she returned to when it came time to work with students. She loves the way students attack new ideas with passion and sees the same joy working with adults who want to be educators. One of the most rewarding things that has happened to Pat during presentations is to have one of the teachers come up and say that he or she is still using and loving the reading and writing strategies learned at one of her trainings. Touching the lives of the teachers touches the lives of so many students that she will never know and she loves that! Her work with Schoolwide has helped Pat meet new people and continue her love for writing curriculum. Pat’s other passions include swimming, reading, watching movies, and traveling.
