� rst area the Rocco’s really noticed on their initial trip to Parker. Today it is still their favorite area of town and favorite place to be, besides their front porch of course. Spend-ing time at O’Brien Park, enjoying ice cream cones as a family under the shade of the beautiful trees is one family activity, but their favorite is Christmastime on Mainstreet. A de-cade later, they call their neighbors friends, and organize many neighborhood activities such as poker nights, grilling parties, July 4th block party and parade, and girl’s night out. Recreation� e Rocco family is a very active family and enjoy play-

ing various team sports casually, but their favorite activity is martial arts. � eir oldest son started training a few years ago and since then the entire family has joined. Why do they love it? � e exercise and unique training opportu-nities martial arts provide and the enhancement of mind, body, and spirit. � e family also enjoys the quantity and quality of outdoor activities such as the “Flat 14ers” de-signed by the Town of Parker Parks and Recreation De-partment.

At the center of a growingarts community

� e cornerstone of the local arts community lies in the heart of downtown Parker.

� e � rst thing people notice when visiting the Park-er Arts, Culture and Events Center — more commonly known as the PACE Center — is the immaculate 536-seat theater and its enchanting Mainstage. National music acts, Broadway-caliber plays and elaborate mu-sical productions unfold on the stage, delighting the growing audiences.

� e PACE Center, however, is more than just a per-forming arts complex. It features an art gallery, dance studio, media lab, culinary education kitchen, four multi-use classrooms and a 3,000 square-foot event room. It’s an ideal venue for every type of event, from

weddings and fundraisers to conferences and summer camps.

When arts and culture director Elaine Mariner � rst arrived on the job in fall 2012, she described the PACE Center as “stunning” and made it a priority to make sure the “community feels ownership of it,” she said.

Since opening in fall 2011, the theater has been the site of award ceremonies and State of the Town ad-dresses by Mayor Mike Waid. PACE, at the corner of Mainstreet and Pine Drive, has also hosted Chinese New Year celebrations, debates featuring mayoral and council candidates, and strategy meetings by commu-nity focus groups, among a wide array of other uses.

What’s better than having a world-class equestrian venue right in your backyard? Well, nothing really.

Being deeply rooted in horse culture, Parker knows a thing or two about how to put on a show. And there is nowhere better than the Colorado Horse Park to take in the full experience. Astride an el-evated plain overlooking Pikes Peak and the southern expanses of the Front Range, the horse park is the site of more than 40 events annually. With 11 arenas, 300 per-manent show stalls, and plenty of room to run, the facility attracts celebrated eques-trians from around the world.

Captive audiences watch breathlessly as horses fly through the air, clearing ob-stacles greater than 1.5 meters. Their riders are amateurs, juniors and Olympians who rave about the conditions, amenities and setting at the Colorado Horse Park, which is tucked in the back of an upscale neigh-borhood south of Parker’s boundary.

Prize purses continue to grow and the packed schedule is something to behold. Most recently, the horse park introduced the Colorado Fall Classic II, a six-week series of hunter-jumper shows that bring in riders and teams for extended periods. The horse park generates more than $15 million annually in spending by spectators, staff and competitors, many of whom stay in area hotels and eat at local restaurants, according to a study by Summit Econom-ics, LLC.

More than 75,000 visitors make their way each year to the venue, which has shopping, corporate offices with a lounge and ballroom, turnout paddocks, a tack store and two indoor arenas. It’s accented with pristine landscaping and wide-open grassy areas to explore.

The Colorado Horse Park — the largest such venue west of the Mississippi River — is a private nonprofit that relies, in part, on sponsorships from local companies like Parker Adventist Hospital. Private funding enables the horse park to maintain its au-tonomy.

Last season was undoubtedly an exciting

one. Kristen VanderVeen, a 24-year-old phenom from the Chicago area, won three grand prix out of the six-week Summer in the Rockies series, walking away with thousands of dollars in prize money and more accolades to add to her resume. She is expected to return in 2014 and defend her throne. The Summer in the Rockies se-ries runs from June 4 to July 20 at the horse park, 7522 S. Pinery Dr.

PACE’s unique architecture, accented by public art pieces, draws the attention of passers-by. At night, it’s defined by a yellow glow that emanates from careful-ly-placed exterior lighting. On the east end of the building lies Harmony Park, an interactive musical outdoor play-ground.

The $22-million building, in its intro-ductory years, has grabbed a devoted following, with more people discovering the wonders held inside every week.

History of the PACE CenterWhen bond issues to fund a com-

bined arts facility and library failed in 2007 and 2008 because of the economic downturn, officials with the Town of Parker searched for alternative ways to fund the PACE Center. Parker had al-ready purchased land west of town hall in 2006 with the intent to construct a centralized gathering place in the down-town district.

In July 2009, council approved rough-ly $44 million in certificates of partici-pation to jointly fund the PACE Cen-ter and a new police station in Parker.

Certificates of participation are repaid through existing revenue streams, like sales-tax revenue.

The latest chapter in support of the PACE Center and its surroundings is a movement to gain state recognition for the downtown area as a “creative district,” which will bring additional grant funding. Parker was named as an “emerging creative district” in 2012.

It’s an exciting time to be immersed in the town’s burgeoning cultural arts scene. A creative district steering com-mittee, led by Mariner, is hard at work plotting out the next few years.

Consistent growth in the Town of Parker has kept recreation directors busy for the better part of two decades.

Whether it’s the addition of a skate park, the construction of a new facility or the continued development of � tness pro-grams, the town’s parks and recreation de-partment has strived to make sure there is something for everyone.

� e latest project — a 24,600-square-foot expansion and 8,000-square-foot renovation of the existing Parker Recre-ation Center on Lincoln Avenue — is also necessitated by the burgeoning population, which has reached around 48,000.

Jim Cleveland, Parker’s recreation di-rector, says the town is “outgrowing the amenities we have.” � e 12- to 14-month construction project, which begins in May, will result in occasional closures, but proj-ect managers will minimize the level of inconvenience. � e end result will be “well worth the wait,” Cleveland says.

� e $16 million expansion and renova-tion will double the pool space and add a lazy river, new water slide, dedicated lap

lanes and a warm-water therapy pool. It’s a plan that’s being welcomed with open arms by local swimming groups and individuals who have traditionally had to book pool time well in advance.

An expanded parking lot will accom-modate heavier weekend tra� c, as will the

addition of eight family changing rooms. � e Parker Recreation Center’s exterior and lobby will undergo major faceli� s. � e project will also add a new half gymnasium and more activity rooms for youth, adult, and older adult � tness/enrichment classes.

The rec center was built in 1994 and Cleveland has looked back at 20 years of feedback and historic use and blended it with existing needs, future needs and industry trends to devise a plan that addresses a “variety of inter-ests and age groups,” he said.

The upgrades will help maintain the center’s long-term appeal, Cleveland said. He is taking a business-like ap-proach to the renovation by trying to find opportunities for revenue generation.

Mayor Mike Waid said the overhaul will greatly im-prove the town’s recreational capacity. While the 2007 opening of the Parker Fieldhouse addressed the limited amount of space for kid and adult sports leagues, it did little to alleviate the pressure on the pool schedule and classroom availability. That will change when the expan-sion is complete in summer 2015.

The project is being funded through the issuance of approximately $7 million in certificates of participa-tion, a contribution of $2 million from the town’s general fund, roughly $4.5 million from the Parks and Recreation Fund and $3 million from the Conservation Trust Fund.

Parker is looking 5-10 years down the road at a third facility, most likely on 35 acres of town-owned land on the southwest corner of South Parker Road and Stroh Road. The timing will be driven by growth and available funding, including from possible partners.

Since opening in 2003, Sky Ridge Medi-cal Center in Lone Tree has responded to the South Metro Denver area’s growing need for easily accessible, high-quality, full-service health care.

Kaiser Permanente has recently opened a 275,000-square-foot, multiple-specialty center at 10240 Park Meadows Drive, which will relieve Douglas County resi-dents of a drive to its Denver specialty facility when they need to see a specialist, such as a cardiologist or dermatologist, said Amy Whited of Kaiser Permanente
