THE PASSING OF STANISA BOJIC - Sadly, Protinica's Father, StanisaBojic, passed away on Monday, March 18, after a few months' illness.The Service held on Tuesday evening, March 19, was attended by hisfamily members and many, many Parishioners. Everyone knew "Deda" ashe helped Father Petar as Tutor. He was a very kind man who, in hisyounger days, was always seen doing work in the church yard. A MemorialSupper in His Honor was held after the Service. He was taken onWednesday morning, March 20, to Gracanica Monastery in Chicago wherehe was buried. May His Memory Be Eternal.

FASTING during GREATLENT

A special word must be saidabout fasting during lent.Generally speaking, fasting isan essential element of theChristian Life. Christ fastedand taught men to fast.Blessed fasting is done insecret, without ostentation oraccusation of others (Mt 6:16;Rom 14). It has as its goal thepurification of our lives, theliberation of our souls andbodies from sin, the strength-ening of our human powers oflove for God and man, theenlightening of our entire beingfor communion with theBlessed Trinity.

'Fasting appears gloomy untilone steps into its arena. Butbegin and you will see whatlight it brings after darkness,what freedom from bonds,what release after a

burdensome life.'+ St Theophan the RecluseThe Orthodox rules for lentenfasting are the monastic rules.No meat is allowed afterMeatfare Sunday, and no eggsor dairy products afterCheesefare Sunday. Theserules exist not as a Pharisaic“burden too hard to bear” (Lk11:46), but as an ideal to bestriven for; not as an end inthemselves, but as a means tospiritual perfection crowned inlove. The lenten servicesthemselves continually remindus of this.

Let us fast with a fast pleasingto the Lord. This is the truefast: the casting off of evil, thebridling of the tongue, thecutting off of anger, thecessation of lusts, evil talking,lies and cursing. The stoppingof these is the fast true andacceptable.

The lenten services also makethe undeniable point that weshould not pride ourselves withexternal fasting since the devilalso never eats!

The ascetic fast of Great Lentcontinues from Meatfare Sundayto Easter Sunday, and is brokenonly after the Paschal DivineLiturgy. Knowing the great effortto which they are called,Christians should make everyeffort to fast as well as they can,in secret, so that God would seeand bless their openly with a holylife. Each person most do hisbest in the light of the givenideal.In addition to the ascetic fastingof the lenten season, theOrthodox alone amongChristians also practice what isknown as eucharistic or liturgicalfasting. This fasting does notrefer to the normal abstinence inpreparation for receiving the holyeucharist; it means fasting fromthe holy eucharist itself.During the week days of GreatLent the regular eucharisticDivine Liturgy is not celebratedin Orthodox churches since theDivine Liturgy is always apaschal celebration of ommunionwith the Risen Lord. Because thelenten season is one ofpreparation for the Lord’sResurrection through the remem-brance of sin and separationfrom God, the liturgical order ofthe Church eliminates theeucharistic service on theweekdays of lent. Instead thenon-eucharistic services areextended with addit ionalscripture readings and hymnolo-gy of a lenten character. In orderthat the faithful would not beentirely deprived of HolyCommunion on the lenten days,

however, the Liturgy of thePresanctified Gifts is celebratedon Wednesday and Fridayevenings.Even during Great Lent,Saturday (the Sabbath Day) andSunday (the Lord’s Day) remaineucharistic days, and the DivineLiturgy is celebrated.On Saturdays it is the normalLiturgy of St John Chrysostom,usually with prayers for the dead.On Sundays it is the longerLiturgy of St Basil the Great.The well-known teaching thatSaturdays and Sundays arenever days of fasting in theOrthodox Church, an issueemphasized centuries ago whencontroversy arose with the LatinChurch, refers only to thiseucharistic-liturgical fast. DuringGreat Lent, even though theeucharistic fast is broken onSaturdays and Sundays, theascetical fast continues throughthe weekends since this fastingis an extended effort made fromMeatfare Sunday right to Easteritself.

Sin Blinds"If we say we have no sin, wedeceive ourselves, and thetruth is not in us" (I John 1:8).Yet we do say we have no sin— many of us. It is easy to foolourselves because as Aristotlesaid, the easiest person in theworld to deceive is oneself.Sin is dangerous and decep-tive precisely because it is soblind to itself. It calls "evil goodand good evil." It puts "dark-ness for light and light for dark-ness." It puts "bitter for sweetand sweet for bitter" (Isaiah5:20).It belongs to the nature of sinto blind as it grows; the moreyou have of it, the less you seeof it. That is why people who donot believe in God and ignoreHis Church are always the firstto protest that they are not sin-ners. They find the words of St.Paul most distasteful, "...ChristJesus came into the world tosave sinners. And I am theforemost of sinners..." (I Tim.1:15).It is the nature of sin to blind usto itself. William Temple said,"No crime looks so bad to theman who has committted it asto the man who has kept clearof it. As soon as we have donesomething that is nasty, wehave blunted our own capacity

to be disgusted, we have tar-nished the mirror in which weare to look at our own reflec-tion." Yet the so-called expertswho are being quoted todayare the great sinners. Themovie actress is quoted as anauthority on men. After all,she's had seven husbands.The wealthy sports man isquoted in the newspaper con-cerning automobiles. He's anauthority — having had sevenwrecks. But the poor amateurswho have never failed in mar-riage or wrecked a car, what dothey know! Thus, it comes topass, as Jesus said, that theblind become leaders of theblind.

LESSONIf one is accustomed to livea bad life, which is inherited

from the father or themother, such a person is insin, and that person is not a

good one. Such a persondoes not want a good

marriage and no peace inthe house .. Such a personhas to change and begin tolive a Christian life, following

the example of Christ andnot the bad parents.
