STRICT FAST DAY
TROPARION OF THE RESURRECTION - Tone 6:
Angelic Hosts were above Thy tomb, and they that guarded Thee became as
dead. And Mary stood by the grave seeking Thine immaculate Body. Thou didst
despoil hades and wast not tempted by it. Thou didst meet the Virgin and didst
grant us life. O Thou Who didst rise from the dead, O Lord, glory be to Thee.
TROPARION OF RIGHTEOUS ANNA - Tone 4:
O divinely wise Anna, in thy womb thou didst bear the pure Mother of God, who
gave birth unto Life. Wherefore, rejoicing in glory, Thou, hast now been translated
to the mansions of heaven, where is the abode of those who rejoice. O ever-blessed
one, beseech thou cleansing of transgressions for those who honor thee with love.
TROPARION OF ST. BASIL OF OSTROG - Tone 4:
From your youth you gave yourself entirely to the Lord, remaining in prayer,
labor and fasting, O God-bearing Father. Because you were an example of
virtues and good works to your flock, seeing your good work, God established
you as a pastor and good hierarch of His Church. And after your repose,
He kept your body incorrupt, O Holy Basil. Therefore, with boldness pray
to Christ God to save our souls. Kontakion of the Resurrection - Tone 6:
Having by His life-bestowing hand raised up all the dead out of the dark
abysses, Christ God, the Giver of Life, hath bestowed the resurrection upon
the fallen human race; for he is the Savior of all, the Resurrection, and the
Life, and the God of all.
Kontakion of the Righteous Anna - Tone 2:
We celebrate the memory of the forebears of Christ, entreating them with faith
for help, that from every tribulation all may be delivered who cry: Our God
is with us, Who glorified them, as was his good pleasure!
GLORY… Kontakion of St. Basil of Ostrog - Tone 8:
Even as a youth, you served the Lord, O Wise one, belaboring your body with
prayer and vigil. Because you were shown to be a precious vessel of the Holy
Spirit, He established you as a pastor of His Church which you tended well.
And as such, you departed to the Lord whom you loved. We pray to you to
remember us who keep your memory with faith, that all may shout unto you:
Rejoice, O most honorable Basil.
BOTH NOW… Kontakion to Theotokos - Tone 6:
O protection of Christians that cannot be put to shame/, O mediation unto the
Creator unfailing/, disdain not the suppliant voices of sinners/, but be thou
quick, O good one, to help us who in faith cry unto thee/; hasten to intercession
and speed thou to make supplication//, thou who dost ever protect, O Theotokos,
them that honor thee.

EYE ON SCRIPTURE We then who are strong ought to bear with the scruples of the weak, and not to please our-selves. Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, lead-ing to edification. For even Christ did not please Himself; but as it is written, ‘the re-proaches of those who re-proached You fell on Me’. For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope. Now may the God of patience and comfort grant you to be like-minded toward one anoth-er, according to Christ Jesus…

Orthodox Study Bible
The mature in faith, with whom Paul theologically identifies, are here called strong and are exhorted to be patient, regard-ing the scruples of the weak. Christ is the supreme example of sacrificing personal rights and not pleasing Himself. Ap. Paul addresses Jewish and Gen-tile Christians on their cultural differences regarding foods and festivals. Both are exhorted to mutual acceptance, just as both are accepted by Christ for the
glory of God. The Old Testament had fore-
seen the unity of faith and joy of be-lieving Jews and Gentiles joined in Christ…

SERBIAN ORTHODOX UNITY AND SPIRITUAL GROWTH
IN THE NEW MILLENNIUM
Holy Myrrh-bearer Mary Magdalane Mary Magdalene, or Mary of Magdala, is a figure in Chr istianity.
Mary Magdalene travelled with Jesus as one of his followers. She is said
to have witnessed Jesus' crucifixion and resurrection. Within the four
Gospels she is named at least 12 times, more than most of the apostles.
During the Middle Ages she developed a reputation in Western Christi-
anity as being a repentant prostitute or loose woman, however, these
claims are not supported by the canonical gospels.
The Gospel of Luke says seven demons had gone out of her, and the
longer ending of Mark says Jesus had cast seven demons out of her. She
is most prominent in the narrative of the crucifixion of Jesus, at which she was present. She was
also present two days later, immediately following the Sabbath, when, according to all four ca-
nonical Gospels, she was either alone or as a member of a group of women the first to testify to
the resurrection of Jesus. John 20 and Mark 16:9 specifically name her as the first person to see
Jesus after his resurrection.
Mary Magdalene was present from the "beginning of a movement that was going to trans-
form the West". She was the "Apostle to the Apostles", an honorific that fourth-century orthodox
theologian Augustine gave her and that others earlier had possibly conferred on her. Ideas that
go beyond the gospel presentation of Mary Magdalene as a prominent representative of the
women who followed Jesus have been put forward over the centuries. Some have considered
her as fulfilling a role similar to that of Simon Peter among the male disciples. The Orthodox
church commemorate her on the Sunday of the Myrrh-bearers and on August 4.
Unfortunately, so often this is
so the reward of a true prophet
– to proclaim the word of God,
but then to be ignored and to
suffer persecution for what
you proclaim.
So Elijah runs away to Mt.
Horeb, where he fasts for 40
days and nights. He stays in a
cave, praying continuously to
God. He even enters into the
presence of God, and as he
stands before God, he shares
his discouragement. He basi-
cally says, “I have been zeal-
ous for you and have faithful-
ly followed you. But look, I
am the only one. All the chil-
dren of Israel have forsaken
you, torn down your altars,
and killed your pro-
phets.
Look,
I am alone,
and now they seek to even
take my life!”
Elijah shares a common frus-
tration that I’m sure even ma-
ny faithful people in our con-
temporary world face. Many
faithful Christians feel as if
they are alone in this faithless
and sinful world. So often,
when we seek to follow Christ,
and live according to His tea-
chings, we seem like we are
the only ones – the only seri-
ous Christian in our work pla-
ce, the only serious Christian
in our neighborhood, or in our
schools, or wherever.
From Elijah we realize that
this feeling of being alone as
we struggle to faithfully walk
with God is not something
new. Throughout history, the
faithful men and women who
ST. ELIJAH On August 2nd of this month,
we remembered one of the
greatest prophets of the Old
Testament, the Prophet Elijah
(or Ilia). Elijah has a wonder-
ful and inspiring story with
an extremely relevant mes-
sage for all of us today.
A “prophet of God” is some-
one who boldly speaks the
word of the Lord. Throughout
the Old Testament, these pro-
phets would courageously
speak before kings and power-
ful people, publicly revealing
to them where they have
strayed from the path of God,
and calling them back to the
straight path. More often than
not, however, the “reward”
these prophets received was
ridicule, slander, persecution
and even death. The leaders
and people often didn’t want
to change their corrupt ways
and listen to the word of God.
Elijah lived at a time when
King Ahab and his wife Jeze-
bel were ruling over Israel.
This king and queen, along
with many of the people of
Israel, had forgotten about the
one true God of Abraham,
Isaac, and Jacob, and begun
worshipping the false god of
Baal. The king also ruled his
people with corruption and
injustice.
So God calls Elijah to go and
proclaim His word to King
Ahab. Of course, the King
doesn’t receive Elijah’s words
warmly, and even threatens to
kill him. Elijah, however, fil-
led with the power of God,
dares the king and all his
priests of the false god Baal
to a competition. He challen-
ges them to see which God is
greater, the holy God of Isra-
el, or their god of Baal. This
“prayer competition” is held
before King Ahab.
First, the priests of Baal are
asked to pray to their god and
ask him to send down fire from
heaven to consume their sacri-
fices placed on an altar. The
priests begin to pray. After ma-
ny hours, and with no results,
they give up in despair.
Elijah then builds an altar and
places a bull on top of the altar.
Before he begins praying,
though, he tells the people to
poor four large jars of water on
top of the sacrifice. They do
this three times to ensure that
the altar and animal are thor-
oughly soaked. Then he called
out to God and prays, “O Lord,
God of Abraham, Isaac and
Israel, let be known today that
You are God in
Israel
and
that I
am Your ser-
vant. Answer me, O Lord, an-
swer me this day with fire, and
let the people know You are
the God of Israel, and I am
Your servant. Let these people
know You are the Lord God,
so as to turn the heart of this
people back..”
Then fire fell from the Lord
out of the heaven and consu-
med the whole burnt offering,
including the altar. And all the
people fell to the ground and
cried out, “Truly the Lord is
God. He is God.”
One would think that after
such a miraculous event, the
king and the people would lis-
ten to Elijah and believe in
God. But the opposite happe-
ned. The king and his wife Jez-
ebel became so furious with
Elijah that they tried to kill him.
have sincerely tried to follow
Christ and live according to
His ways have often felt alone.
The world around us will
always be seeking after some-
thing else. Even those who call
themselves Christians are too
often Christian in name alone,
but not in an authentic struggle.
Jesus Himself warned His dis-
ciples by saying, “The road is
narrow and the way is difficult
that leads to life, and there are
few who find it. And the way is
wide and broad that leads to
destruction, and there are ma-
ny who go in by it.” (Mt 7:13-
14)
This story of Elijah ends with
God comforting the prophet
and encouraging him by saying,
“There are seven thousand in
Israel who have not bowed to
Baal.” In other words, you’re
not alone! There are other faith-
ful people who struggle to fol-
low God.
May each of us remember
these words. We’re not alone.
Don’t be deceived by the Gal-
lop Polls that show what the
majority or the masses think
or do. Instead, be inspired and
encouraged by the remnant,
the saints, the few faithful who
continue to follow the ways
of the Lord.
I share this story of Elijah to
encourage and inspire each one
of us, especially when we feel
alone in our struggle to follow
the paths of God. We’re not
alone. God is with us. His Holy
Spirit is within us. And there
are other faithful people, also
fighting the good fight to stay
faithful until the end. May we
remember the Prophet Elijah
on his feast-day on August 2/
July 20, as one of these faithful
saints, and be inspired by his
example.
Fr. Luke VERONIS
Elijah shares a common frustration that I’m sure even many faithful people in our contem-
porary world face. Many faithful Christians feel as if they are alone in this faithless and
sinful world. So often, when we seek to follow Christ, and live according to His teachings, we seem like we are the only ones – the only seri-ous Christian in our work place, the only seri-ous Christian in our neighborhood, or in our
schools, or wherever.
Lord, visit Thy ser-vants in their suf- fering, and grant them grace and
strength to bear their sick-ness with which they are afflicted; heal and save them:
