Dear Middle School Parents,

We would like to invite all Middle School parents to our rst parent co ee thiscoming Tuesday September 23, 2014 in the Li le Theater from 7:45 - 9:00a.m. We will begin with a short performance by our grade 7 and 8 strings stu-dents and then we will be discussing what is happening in Middle School,along with further informa on and learning about our new assessment andgrading prac ces. Together with the counseling team we will be available fordiscussions and ques ons a er our presenta on and an opportunity for youto also meet with other parents.

Next week is Classroom Without Walls - we are excited about this opportunityfor our students. The aim of CWW is to promote students' personal growthand development while enhancing community, team building, service learn-ing, and being immersed in our local culture of the Philippines. Grade 5 willbe on campus, and Grade 6, 7 and 8 will each be going to a di erent site. Wewill communicate with everyone via email how the trips are going, and in ad-vance we will be closely monitoring the weather to ensure the trips can take

place.

Please take note that our Parent Teacher Conferences will be taking place onthe a ernoons of October 20 and 21. We will be sending out details of ouronline appointment system for scheduling your conferences with the teachersyou would like to meet with. This is a great opportunity for you to touch basewith your child's teachers and learn more about their progress.

Beginning on September 13, di erent service opportuni es will be o ered on Saturdays. Someevents involve a trip to visit a service partner while others involve hos ng a local educa on pro-gram. Along with the joy of giving, students bene t by interac ng with children from di erentbackgrounds and ge ng to know the Philippines beyond Maka and Taguig. To par cipate, stu-dents simply pick up a permission slip from the MS O ce on the Monday before the trip. Onceits been signed and returned to the o ce, a student can sign up on the roster. Some trips ll upquickly so encourage them to sign up early. Parent are welcome to a end!

INVITATION TO JOIN COMMITTEE TO REVIEW PTA CONSTITUTION AND BY-LAWS

Dear ISM Parents and Teachers,

The Parent Teacher Associa on (PTA) is calling for six volunteers to join a commi ee, independent of the PTA Execu ve Com-mi ee, to oversee a review of its Cons tu on and By -Laws (By-Laws).

The review will be conducted in consulta on with the ISM community over the course of this school year. If any changes aremade on the basis of the review, the en re parent teacher community will be called on to approve the changes.

The commi ee will also include a maximum of three members from previous PTA Execu ve Commi ees who have workedclosely with the current By -Laws. The total number on the commi ee will be nine. Addi onal commi ee members may alsobe chosen from the administra on.

If you are interested, please submit an expression of interest con rming your availability and capacity to: - a end mee ngs at least twice a month for the school year mostly during the school day but may include evenings; - par cipate in various forms of community consulta on as required; - dra various sec ons of the By -Laws based on consulta on; and - provide considered comments on various dra s.

The Common Cold or Sipon is an infec on of the nasal mucosa, including the sinuses, the throat and or bronchi. It is caused pri-marily by viruses of di erent species, like Rhino -, Entero -, Corona -, Adeno - or Paramyxoviruses, and there are more than 200 strainsknown to cause a common cold. Colds are the most common infec on of mankind.

While adults catch a cold in average two to three mes a year, children are a ected up to thirteen mes more o en. In the past few days there have been ar cles about respiratory complica ons, caused by Enterovirus (EV) D68 in children in somestates of USA, as well as in some Asian countries, including the Philippines.

Enteroviruses form a quite large family of viruses, and cause 10 15 million infec ons in the US yearly. Generally they tend to have asummer/fall season that o en peaks in September, and can be easily spread when you have close contact with an infected person.You can also get infected by touching objects or surfaces that have the virus on them then touching your mouth, nose or eyes, theCDC (the US based Center for Disease Control and Preven on) says.

EV D68 however is a rare virus. A peak has been noted in the past weeks in some hospitals in several states of the US, where EV D68caused a large percentage of respiratory complica ons in children, 6 weeks to 16 years of age, with symptoms of common cold. Dr.Anne Schuchat, director of CDCs Na onal Center for Immuniza on and Respiratory Diseases said it was too early to say whether thevirus would spread to other states and how long the outbreak might last.

The CDC stated last Monday that none of the cases so far this year were fatal, nor did any result in paralysis, as far as the CDC knows.Health o cials note that there are no vaccines speci cally formulated to prevent Enterovirus D68 or an viral drugs to treat it. A ect-ed children were receiving asthma medica ons, oxygen and intravenous uids as needed, the Kansas City Star reported.

Schuchat stressed that one warning sign parents should look for in their children is di culty breathing, which should prompt parentsto seek immediate medical a en on.

It seems to produce illness with a more severe component (such as) di culty breathing, Dr. William Scha ner, an infec ous diseas-es expert at Vanderbilt University, told NBC News in a Monday report. But the vast majority of these kids will get be er.

Congratula ons and well done to our Volleyball teams who both made the nal games in Singapore last weekend. This

was an excellent prepara on for the upcoming IASAS here at ISM from October 16 to 18. Also our XC runners did verywell in Bangkok at their exchange with Molly Bailey winning the 5km event and sophomore Dirk Staal pos ng the fastest
