It doesntmatter what you are, whether you are aCEO o a multinational company or aroadside sweeper, what matters is who youare, to be humble, and that you treateveryone airly and with courtesy andrespect.

    The Raak School o

Government Public DiscourseWith globalisation making national economiesmore linked together than ever beore, itbecomes increasingly critical or Malaysiato become better inormed, equipped withthe high quality knowledge and insights thatare necessary to make the right decisions andactions. As an academic institution, Universitiun Abdul Razak (UNIRAZAK) strives toplay an active role in the dissemination anddiscussion o knowledge. In line with thisobjective, UNIRAZAKs Razak School oGovernment (RSOG) organised a series opublic discourses, known as the Razak School

o Government Public Discourse, to bedelivered by well known personalities in theirrespective eld o studies.

YBhg. Pro. Datuk Dr. Md. Zabid Hj. AbdulRashid, President and Vice Chancellor oUniversiti un Abdul Razak, stressed themandate o UNIRAZAK in that, to bettersecure the nations uture, it has been taskedwith two items: rstly, to build and developsuccessul entrepreneurs who contribute to thenation economically and socially, and secondly,to train and cultivate perorming leaders orboth the public and private sectors.

With the above in mind, the RSOG PublicDiscourse is a series o events which aims totake a contemporary view and eature speakerswho are knowledgeable on current aairs andtrends. Teir thoughts and experiences on ourpresent-day environment and economy canhelp shed light on the appropriate actions to betaken as we strive to develop a more prosperousMalaysia, especially one that is more creative, innovative, and entrepreneurial.

Both public discourses were attended byvarious academics, diplomats, representativesrom the private sector, government ocials, and students.

severe economic and inancial crises suchas the economic recession in 1980s, theAsian economic crisis in 1997-1998 andthe most recent nancial crisis due to theUSA housing market downturn. Each time, the government has responded wisely usingeective macroeconomic policies to bringthe economy towards recovery. What lessonscan we learn rom the Malaysian experience? How is it dierent rom the current economiccrisis? Has the government done enough

to reverse the economic slowdown? Are themacroeconomic indicators showing recovery? Is there a possibility o an economic doubledip, as warned by 2001 Noble Prize winnerin economics, Joseph Stiglitz? What should bedone to strengthen the economy in terms omacroeconomic policies and strategies so thatit can withstand uture crises? What strategiescan be ormulated to ensure sustainableeconomic growth? What are the social impactsand non economic issues resulting rom thecrisis? What can be done to lit the pall opessimism amongst investors and consumers? What can we learn rom the experience oother countries? Tese were some o the issuesand questions were deliberated and discussedin the discourse.

Weaving Liestyle into LearningI the thought o conventional classroomteaching immediately sends you to slumberland or i having to listen to a teacher droneon and on is your idea o comatose boredom, entrepreneurs might be really pleased to notethat the Centre or Executive Education (CEE)o Universiti un Abdul Razak is giving learninga whole new meaning.

CEE has recently introduced a Liestyle Learningconcept which encompasses learning by sharingknowledge, networking and leisure moments.

Our audiences who are successul SME ownershave a wealth o experience and at this universitywe believe that experience is the primaryeducation. We dont want the learning sessionsto be very academic. We will take the learningout o the classroom to much more excitinglocations, said Associate Pro Dr. IbrahimZahari, the director o CEE.

Dr. Ibrahim went on to expound on knowledge, network and leisure explaining that there will besharing sessions conducted where entrepreneurscan learn rom each other.

Our role is two-old, we will acilitate suchsharing sessions between the SME participantswho will provide the practical knowledge andwe will get experts rom within our universityand outsource some rom specic industries toshare their theoretical knowledge with them. Tecontent development and design will be rom apanel o experts. We will also have a theme oreach programme. Tis way the sessions will bevery interactive, explained Ibrahim.

Te knowledge sharing sessions will be held atleisure settings as opposed to a classroom. CEEwants their participants to have un, and whilelearning, network since the interactive sessionswill be held at relaxed and casual places such as

cruises, chalets in mountains and secludedislands. Its all about disseminating knowledgein an exciting and enjoyable manner.

he whole purpose o Liestyle Learningis to create an innovative leader with anentrepreneurial mind, which according toDr. Ibrahims knowledge includes the threecomponents o leadership, entrepreneurship andinnovation. o help achieve this, the sessionswill be customised according to the needs othe SME in question. Hence the duration o thesessions are fexible and stress ree.

argeting successul entrepreneurs with high-end liestyles, Ibrahim revealed that initiallythe sessions would be carried out regionally.A typical scenario would be as ollows; aprogramme could rst be conducted in Vietnamand participants can visit entrepreneurs thereand also visit their actories. Networking withthe Vietnamese businessmen will be ongoingthroughout the visit and at the same timethey could go golng and sightseeing together.Dinners will be organised with each other.

At the end o the session, Malaysian SMEs willknow how Vietnamese SMEs work in Vietnam.Later, once they are already amiliar with theworkings o SMEs regionally, the visits can beorganized on even more distant shores such asEurope. Anything is possible as the programmesare customised. I it is an IC group, the sessionscould even be held at Silicon Valley, USA!

o begin with, sessions will be targeted on oneeld each quarter. For example, at rst CEE willocus on a specialized industry such as tourism.

Te second quarter might be on IC, the thirdon health care and so on.

We want everyone out there to know that weare educational institution that oers somethinglike this. We are dierent. We are doing thisbecause we want to be close to the industrialplayers. Te wealth o experience that SMEshave is the real thing and we can transer thisknowledge to the classroom, pointed outDr. Ibrahim.
