Dear Readers,

Driverless buses are being trialled in traffic in various parts of the world – and are already largely accident-free. Robotic vehicles will be soon be delivering letters, packages and in-sured items to our homes. Specialist drones will be summoned by mobile app to speed first aid kits to the scene of an accident. Using virtual reality glasses and the appropriate software we will be able to “beam” ourselves to Indonesia in seconds to visit Borobudur, one of the largest temple complexes in southern Asia, almost as if we were there in person...

You somehow get the feeling that over the past few years a powerful potential for innovation has been gathering force and will soon have a permanent impact on our private and profes-sional lives. Using teleoperation and tele-pres-ence functions, for example, the “Internet of Things” will be able to do far more and far more important things than just fill empty refrigera-tors. Fortunately.

On the other hand – if we are honest – our ca-ble industry suffers from a rather stuffy image. Or doesn’t it?

A lot has been happening here recently. Dat-wyler data cables are already professionally packed and palletised by highly efficient ro-bots, and operational data management sys-tems have been standard for a long time. In the aisles of our factory in China you can meet the first self-propelled assistants. Things are becoming really interesting in modern data centres, where new technologies are opening up fantastic opportunities, in monitoring and troubleshooting for instance.

We at Datwyler are proud of working with the latest innovations so that we can help our cus-tomers meet the daily challenges they face now and in the future – live and sometimes vir-tually as well.

For the time being, however, we are keeping our feet on the ground. In this issue of our cus-tomer magazine, dear readers, you will find successfully completed projects and newly developed products which can be “grasped” without VR glasses.

I hope you enjoy reading about them.

Some of the towns and villages in the Swiss commune of Dussnang are widely scattered, so to connect them to the fibre optic network EKT AG, Thurgau’s cantonal energy company, planned to use an innovative fibre optic cable for the duct system in the Elektrizitätswerk Dussnang FTTH project. Up till then the elec-tricity companies had Datwyler’s “FO Outdoor wbKT S-Micro” – 216 fibres and an external diameter of 8.4 millimetres – blown into the microducts in their supply area. Datwyler was commissioned to develop a new cable which would provide sufficient fibres for those using the expansion project.

Datwyler and EKT AG implemented the FTTH solution together. The development project is special in that more fibres allow each utilisa-tion unit to be connected to two fibres during fine distribution. The cable also had to fit into the existing duct system and be capable of being blown over a distance of 1,500 metres so as to reach even the remotest households.

10.4 millimetres, 288 fibres Datwyler introduced the “FO Outdoor wbKT S-Micro 12 x 24” in the spring. This product provides 288 type E9/125 G.652.D fibres. With an external diameter of only 10.4 millimetres it fitted into EKT’s 12 mm (internal diameter) microducts.

EKT had constructed the duct system with other partners in the summer of 2015. If cost

effective, the duct blocks were routed under the road. If this appeared too expensive, a civil engineering company buried the microducts in the soil using two tractors and a plough.

blown for 1,500 metresIn May 2016 the new cable was blown into the microducts. The first section of the link dropped sharply and towards the end numer-ous curves had to be negotiated. Despite this, the fibre optic cable was inserted into the 1,500 metre section without any breakpoints.

Gerhard Glükler, Head of Telecom Service Management at EKT, explained that the con-tract was awarded to Datwyler because the two companies had a long history of collabo-ration in the fibre optic cable sector. This proved to be the right choice once again: “This solution meant that we were able to ac-cess more buildings and at the same time, thanks to the small diameter of the new ca-ble, do so without installing additional ducts,” said the expert.

Each end customer can have two fibres routed into the home against a contribution towards the cost. Eventually EKT wants to connect all the buildings in the region to the information highway.

The new command centre for the Depart-ment of Public Safety of Jiangxi Province is an integrated operative unit closely linked to all the province’s local public safety offices. The department is responsible for alarms, evaluat-ing information, decision-making processes and consultancy as well as for emergency calls and deployments. At the same time, as the command centre for the police forces, it must ensure fast response times and integrated operational control.

The data centre premises cover a total area of 8685 square metres. The data centre cabling project comprised 14 data processing areas and the operations centre with 25,000 10G copper ports and 50,000 fibre optic ports. The installation was carried out using, among oth-er things, flame retardant Category 6A F/FTP data cables conforming to IEC-60332-3, as well

as pre-assembled OM4 multimode cables from Datwyler. The architecture of the data centre cabling system complies with Standard TIA942, and the cabling in the computer rooms extends to all the distribution areas, from MDA to EDA.

optimum performanceThe data centre project provides the Depart-ment of Public Safety of Jiangxi Province with robust, reliable and safe broadband perfor-mance of sound functionality and facilitates fast implementation and expansion. These features of the IT network infrastructure form the basis for optimum performance through-out the entire life cycle of the system.

Datwyler’s involvement in the project dated from late 2015. Dedicated engineers and tech-nicians were allocated to it from start to finish,

from detailed planning through construction to acceptance testing and start-up.

In collaboration with the on-site technical personnel all the links were tested for com-pliance with Chinese national standards – GB 50311-2007 and GB 50312-2007 – and with in-ternational Standard ISO/IEC 11801-2002. The values determined met the requirements in all respects. This meant that it was possible to hand the cabling system over to the owners as early as mid 2016.

on-site training of installers at the audi plant in San jose Chiapa

In past years Mexico was the fourth exporter and the eighth car producer, but figures will increase in the next few months due to the start-up of new operations by different car manufacturers. These will increase Mexico’s production, boosting exports since most of the cars are produced for the US, Central and South American markets.

Among the latest plants we can find the most up-to-date production plant in the Audi world. In San Jose Chiapa, Puebla, at an altitude of 2,400 metres, this Audi plant is

being created on a 460 hectare site, where the German car producer is investing more than 1 billion dollars. Around 3,300 employees have been recruited for automobile produc-tion, and a total of 4,200 people will be em-ployed at the site. The new Audi plant will produce 150,000 units per year of model Audi Q5 and for this the company has select-ed approximately 180 suppliers. It will be the world’s most modern Audi plant, placing pri-ority on ecological, social and economic sus-tainability, and thus playing an active part in shaping the region’s future.

highest future viability Audi decided to introduce a Cat 7A expandable and flexible Datwyler copper cabling system, which offers high performance headroom and will therefore save the expense of re-wiring for future applications. For a future-proofing strat-egy Cat 7A cable is suitable for transmission frequencies of up to 1,000 megahertz, featur-ing even more stringent specifications for crosstalk and system noise than other usual categories on the Mexican market. An annual-ized cost of ownership perspective shows a far greater return on investment, as the system has such a long lifespan.

More than 600 kilometres of “CU 7120 4P” cable and more than 17,000 RJ45 Cat 6A outlets were delivered for this project.

Fibre optic cables and panels were also in-cluded. Datwyler delivered more than 120 kilometres of “FO Universal” cable and more than 500 panels in different versions. The last phase of this project included another 100 kilometres of a specific direct burial fibre optic cable for a CCTV surveillance system.

Certified local partners Some weeks after the beginning of the pro-ject Datwyler implemented on-site training for the system integrators. This training, intro-duced by a Datwyler specialist from Switzer-land, covered the best practices for the com-pany’s copper and fibre optic portfolio and the different measurement protocols, and en-sured the correct installation of the products according to Audi standards.

Another key success factor was the effective coordination of deliveries, which enhanced the quality of services. Benefits include more efficient on time delivery of materials and resources and improved working relationships.

Due to Datwyler’s presence in Mexico, its dis-tributor Marathon Eléctrica de Puebla and its certified integrators, the whole project ran smoothly without any delay.

The implementation of this future-proof high-performance ICT cabling solution complied with Audi’s most stringent demands. The suc-cessful project in Mexico represents an oppor-tunity to again secure Datwyler’s expertise in planning the next project at an early stage.

Huggenberger AG, established in 1900, is a Swiss company in Horgen at Lake Zurich which has specialised in the development and production of high-precision physical measurement systems, particularly for dam walls. Their product range includes mechan-

ical and electronic sensors and metering de-vices which are based on cutting-edge tech-nologies and are used for monitoring and inspecting the safety of structures.

The behaviour and structural integrity of ma-jor building and civil engineering works as well as of many production facilities need to be observed. It is therefore vitally important to monitor their inclination and horizontal dis-placement. To this end Huggenberger AG supplies innovative fully automatic pendulum measuring solutions including monitoring systems. The company also supplies custom-ers with instruments for measuring and indi-cating many other values. Examples include expansion, pressure, temperature, water level, tension and resistance. The range of services extends from consultancy through develop-ment and production to assembly, start-up and training in an instrumentation system.

Special Datwyler cables Huggenberger AG has already installed its measurement technology in over 450 major structures throughout the world, including dam walls, earth dams, power stations, con-struction trenches, tunnels and bridges. For around 30 years Huggenberger AG has been using “TS-PUR” and “TAP47” signal cables to provide reliable connections for its instru-ments and systems. These are special cables, both manufactured by Datwyler, and used in structures which include the Mosul Dam, the largest dam in Iraq, the Randenigala Dam in central Sri Lanka, the Atatürk Dam on the Eu-phrates (Turkey), the Manantali Dam in Mali, the Nangbeto Dam in Togo, and the Muttsee Dam, the longest barrage wall in Switzerland.

“TS-PUR” signal cable has four stranded con-ductors, copper braided shielding and a PUR sheath, making it both flexible and suitable for construction sites. It is laid directly into fresh concrete or in cable ducts and cable conduits.

The robust “TAP47”, manufactured by Datwyler for Huggenberger AG with aluminium screen-ing as well as with PE and PUR sheathing, is op-

The “World Elevator & Escalator Expo”, which has been held in Shanghai for the past eleven years, is one of the world’s biggest and most influential trade fairs for the lift industry.

This year it attracted a record 1,200 plus com-panies from 20 countries, including France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Japan, Russia, South Korea, Spain and the United States, and covered an exhibition area of 130,000 square metres. Since the products currently being fea-tured are more intelligent and “human” than before, over 150,000 visitors from home and abroad came to the fair to hold talks and nego-tiations.

Datwyler’s “Swissness” shone out at this event, and visitors to the exhibition stand were shown a broad portfolio of lift cabling solutions, including conventional flat cables for rapid data transfer as well as high-rise lift suspension cable systems of up to 400 me-tres in height and low-rise systems of up to 80 metres. These Datwyler products and so-lutions are used in major projects like the Shanghai Oriental Pearl Tower, the Shanghai World Financial Centre and the Hong Kong International Commerce Centre.

Visitors to the Datwyler exhibition stand were able to meet an international team of col-leagues from China, Singapore and Switzerland. Xubing Xia, Managing Director of Datwyler in China, and three representatives of Datwyler’s Singapore management also attended the fair,

iN beRNe Good organisation and a lot of trade visitors:

The main sponsor produces extremely positive results.

In September “Com-Ex”, the Swiss trade fair for communications infrastructure, was held in Berne for the first time. Under the slogan “You always win with us” Datwyler showed visitors to the exhibition stand its innovative products and system solutions for electrical and ICT in-frastructures in single-purpose buildings and data centres as well as for FTTx networks. The broad product range rightly merits the name “Swiss Made”, as Datwyler has been manufac-turing in Altdorf, in the heart of Switzerland, for over 100 years now.

The product innovations met with a very pos-itive response. On the subject of high-speed home cabling, Datwyler introduced the “CU

7000 4P Home”, a newly developed shielded Category 7 data cable for 10-gigabit transmis-sions, which is only 5.8 millimetres “thick” and is supplied in a practical pull-quick box.

“10.4 millimetres are enough!” This was the slo-gan promoting Datwyler’s new 288-fibre blown cable from the “FO Outdoor wbKT S-Micro” line. The new IT rack range was presented as an illustrative enclosure solution. Current appli-cations using the “Datwyler Data Centre Solu-tion” on a scale of 1:1, and including the new FO-DCS speed converter plug-in module, were shown in the network racks and server racks on the stand. These modules allow the cost-effec-tive aggregation of high-speed links.

Every aspect of the first “Com-Ex” was a total suc-cess for Datwyler. “The contacts on our stand were far better than anticipated in terms of both quality and quantity”, concluded Christian Scharpf, Sales Director Switzerland. Which explains why Datwy-ler’s whole exhibition team is already looking for-ward to the next “Com-Ex” in September 2018.

These pillars form the basis of Datwyler’s strategy in the Middle East region and underlie business relationships with customers, which are found-ed on mutual trust and respect.

Several times a day Datwyler’s technical team had scheduled two presentations to provide participants with an in-depth and unbiased knowledge of communications cabling systems and data centre infrastructures. The first presen-

tation was called “Datwyler Tables”. These ta-bles, designed to answer customers’ most fre-quent questions, explain, summarise and contrast international standards, yielding a comparison between shielded and unshielded cabling solutions with Category 6A products. The presentation also highlighted the advan-tages of non-conducting glass-reinforced versus steel-reinforced fibre optic cable.

New network design tool In the last part of the presentation the new Datwyler Design Tool – an innovation from Datwyler Middle East – was introduced. This

tool translates cutting-edge cabling infra-structures into simple non-technical lan-guage which can be understood by every user in the ICT sector. All users need to do is enter the number of data connections re-quired, a cable type and the number of tele-com rooms. They are then given a detailed design BOQ, a list of parts and quantities with article numbers, prices, the budget needed for the project, availability, etc.

The Beta version of the Datwyler Design Tool will shortly be released with limited functional-ity so as to obtain comprehensive user experi-

ence. The second step will be to incorporate the feedback collected into the tool and inte-grate additional products in order to broaden the choice. The third step will be a software ap-plication and an app. The tool will then be linked to the ERP system to enable users to receive live updates on quantity and availability. In the fifth and final step, authorised users will be able to use it to place orders at a click of the mouse.

The second presentation was entitled “Data Centre Technologies and Standards”. Here Dat-wyler’s data centre specialist Senjaya Halim not only gave the audience an insight into the latest technological developments, but also intro-duced the Datwyler Data Centre Services and Turnkey Data Centre range for businesses.

a partner much in demandAs a supplier of total solutions Datwyler present-ed itself not least as an expert partner with com-prehensive know-how in the field of structured cabling systems, able to support its customers with a broad range of solutions – even, for ex-ample with complete low voltage systems.

“GITEX was once again a resounding success for Datwyler. Our on-site team welcomed several hundred visitors from various countries to the stand and held good discussions with potential new customers from the whole region and the most varied sectors. Dr. Hanspeter Fässler, Chair-man of the Board of Directors, and Johannes

Müller, CEO, were in attendance for two days, and among others they welcomed to the stand Maya Tissafi, the Swiss Ambassadress to the United Arab Emirates, together with major dis-tributors and partners. We introduced all the visitors to our stand to the full range of solu-tions and new developments designed to meet the most important customer, applica-tion and project requirements,” explained Shaheer Shaaban, Internal Sales Manager of Datwyler Middle East.

The Team Building event, organised by a pro-fessional off-road agency based in Dubai, was held in the Dubai desert. The drivers met up in the city, where each was allocated a modified four-wheel drive vehicle. The participants then drove for around an hour to the first stop, to let air out of their tyres. It was then that the adven-ture really began.

The fleet was made up of 19 vehicles, divided among organisers and participants. The former occupied four cars, three of which each led a group of five participating vehicles. One car was for the “sweeper”, who continuously shut-tled back and forth between the groups. Each vehicle had a radio and its own channel for staying in contact with the group leader.

Safety being the top priorityThe adventure began with a short safety briefing and a bit of theory on driving in de-sert sand. In a tour like this, safety is the top priority, so first of all everyone had to drive into the dunes to practise the basic principles of driving on sand. The “thrill” factor increased as more ground was covered. It was a very en-joyable drive.

Around midday the group stopped for a “mountaineering” contest. All the drivers tak-ing part had to drive the same, non-modified

jeep up a steep slope. The competition was won by the driver who – using the sand driv-ing techniques learnt – ascended the slope be-tween two marker points in the slowest time. The winner received a Mini iPad engraved with the Datwyler logo.

The teams then continued their tour for two hours until they reached their destination – a well-deserved barbecue. As the meal was served everyone was able to look back on a long, exhausting but pleasurable day.

The success of this event surpassed everyone’s expectations. All the Datwyler partners en-joyed themselves tremendously and wished the company every success for the future.

Datwyler is already looking forward to inviting its partners to the next event.

Safety objectives in the event of fire are clearly defined in many European countries: the spread of fire and smoke must be prevented and it must be possible to rescue humans and animals. As a matter of principle, therefore, the use of “easily inflammable” building products is prohibited in all classes of building.

Smoke fumes represent the greatest risk in the event of a fire. Most people killed in a fire die from smoke poisoning. The less smoke generated, the higher are the chances of res-cue. This is why modern cables feature mini-mal to low smoke generation. By reducing corrosiveness (acidity) of the flue gases to a

minimum, e.g. in halogen-free cables, fire damage and down times after a fire are sig-nificantly reduced. Another important as-pect is to produce as few flaming droplets as possible, which can reduce fire propagation in horizontal cable systems.

the european Construction Products Regulation The new European Construction Products Regulation has been in force since July 2013. Its full name is “Regulation (EU) No 305/2011 of the European Parliament and of the Coun-cil of 9 March 2011 laying down harmonised conditions for the marketing of construction products and repealing Council Directive 89/106/EEC.”

For the first time at European level this Regula-tion stipulates that cables and lines – and this includes data cables – must be classified and marketed as construction products in terms of fire safety. Requirements governing use are to be regulated nationally in the Member States.

kNow-how

CleaR labelliNg of Cable fiRe Safety ClaSSeS

For the first time, in accordance with the European Construction Products Regulation, energy, control and communications cables intended

for permanent installation in structures must be tested and classified to new EN standards. From 1 July 2017 only cables with classified fire

behaviour may be put on the European market. Cables with system circuit integrity are not currently affected by the Regulation.

the fire behaviour of cables Standard cables installed in buildings have at least passed an inflamma-bility test. In the language of the new European construction products classification they display “acceptable fire behaviour”, which would be consistent with Class Eca.

Modern cables, however, are capable of far more. They show signifi-cantly lower fire propagation in the bundle fire test.

Classified fire behaviour EN 13501-6 “Fire classification of construction products and building elements, Part 6: Classification using data from reaction to fire tests on electric cables” means that for the first time cables can be classified comparably with other building products.

The classification table of the new Construction Products Regulation includes seven main classes from A to F. These are assigned on the ba-sis of heat release and flame propagation criteria (see Table 1).

A further fire behaviour classification is made for the additional re-quirements of smoke production (s), flaming droplets or particles (d) and acidity of combustion gases (a) (see Table 2).

Declarations of performance for each product Since July 2016 the requisite standards for the classification of fire behav-iour have been officially applicable and the European test laboratories are accredited to test cables and assign the new European classes. In the transition phase to 1 July 2017 both cables with a declaration of perfor-mance which certifies the main class and additional classes assigned and

cables which meet current fire behaviour requirements can be put on the market. As of the effective date, 1 July 2017, only cables tested and classified in accordance with the new standards can be marketed.

New national application standards The selection and use of classified cables should be incorporated in national fire safety regulations and adapted to national safety level. Now, however, consideration is given to a whole building, beyond pure escape routes. The risks are also assessed according to type and use of building. These are essentially as follows: • lowoccupancyanddifficultevacuation,e.g.high-risebuildings• highoccupancyandsimpleevacuation,e.g.theatres,cinemas, department stores • highoccupancyanddifficultevacuation,e.g.hotels,hospitals, high-rise buildings with public access

As until now requirements relating to the use of cables differed in Mem-ber States, it is hardly surprising that so far suggestions for the choice of main and additional classifications have also varied widely.

International Standard IEC 60364-4-42 specifies cables which are non-flame propagating for escape routes in buildings with special fire risks as well as for premises or places where irreplaceable goods are endan-gered (e.g. museums, stations, data centres). This standard further rec-ommends halogen-free cables with minimum smoke production (this means: with improved fire safety properties) for premises or places in which irreplaceable cultural assets are present.

further action It is advisable for building owners, planners and installers to contact the authorities responsible for fire safety in their country to find out what the situation is with regard to the national fire safety classifica-tion of cables permanently installed in structures. Inasmuch as no mandatory classifications have been established, the authorities should clarify when a decision can be expected and for how long the cables currently available on the market can continue to be used for future planning and installation.

favourable position for data cables In the case of data cables little change is required to achieve the new classification requirements – making the adoption of the new regula-tions an easy transition for clients.

Datwyler will be happy to answer any questions you may have on this subject.

40G- and 100G applications are now a reality in the data centre environment, and higher trans-mission rates will soon follow. High-speed fibre optic links connect the switches to each other as well as to today’s 10G servers and future server generations (25G and 50G).

In order to aggregate such links cost-effective-ly at switch level they have to be split into sev-eral duplex links. This requirement is easily met with Datwyler’s new plug-in modules.

Convert to duplex channelsAll well-known multimode and single-mode QSFP applications such as SR4, PSM4, PLR4 and

FCp can be converted to four duplex channels using the new FO-DCS speed converter plug-in modules from Datwyler. The connectivity of these plug-in modules splits each of the three incoming parallel optic links into four duplex links, 100G into four 25G or 40G into four 10G, for example.

At the rear the speed converter plug-in mod-ules, available for OM3, OM4 and OS2, have two 12-fibre MTP couplers and route these 24 fibres by way of integrated fanouts to 3 x four duplex ports on the front panel. Due to their high-qual-ity assembly the plug-in modules guarantee optimum optical performance values (IL/RL).

Due to an ever-increasing flood of data Dat-wyler customers in China are having to deal with growing requirements for data centre in-frastructure. With the “General Patch Solution” Datwyler offers them a flexible, high-quality solution for patching fibre optic and copper links as well as for 10G, 40G and 100G applica-tions. The hallmarks of this solution are high quality components and great flexibility. This means that they also meet the most stringent requirements of the cabling industry.

high packing densities, good clear layout Both today’s requisite high-density concep-tion and the modularity principle – for cop-per, fibre optic and mixed groupings – are embodied in the design of this patch solu-tion. It is space-saving, offers clear layouts, and on one rack unit (1U) provides up to 24 copper ports (shielded or unshielded) and a maximum of 96 fibres (spliced or 2x MTP on 6x LCQ). It is, moreover, designed with future updates in mind.

fast, simple maintenance The 1U panel allows the insertion of up to four module components (cassettes). Each of these can be removed and maintained from the front or rear without damaging adjacent cables. This saves time and money.

Reserve capacity for future expansion As each panel has four slots for module com-ponents, slots for future expansion are al-ways allowed for.
