Dear Members:                                                                                                                         Sharon Cripps (thank you Sharon!) did some extra checking at Fort Robinson for our April Meeting. I thought I would send this extra information on to you members. We will be meeting in the Buffalo Soldiers Barracks-Squad Room. We will have our meeting and then have a showing of the quilts made and donated by guild members across the state specifically for the Officers’ Quarters. Ten or so quilts will be showcased at our guild meeting. The rest of the quilts will involve a walking tour of the officers’ quarters (this will involve steps). To clarify-- Anyone driving into the Fort park area will need a park sticker (a daily pass ONLY is $6.00-- a Yearly Pass is $30.00--which is good for all year at any NE State Park). These are available in the Main Park Office (brick building). You may want to make arrangements with other guild members to car pool into the park area. If you plan to go on to the Chadron Quilt Festival you may want to bring a sack lunch. FYI, a Quilt Trunk Show will be presented by Ralene Succor, (of Crawford) at the Chadron Festival @ 2:00 pm Saturday. We did not plan a class after the meeting to allow you the opportunity to enjoy the Park and Chadron Quilt Show, if so desired. We are hoping for a great turnout. Several ladies from our guild will have quilts on display in the Chadron Show. It will be a pleasant way to spend a Spring day--hope you can join us!! Hope to See You here!! Lari H

HANGING IT UP.......

Pockets for Hanging Quilts

“Use two 10” squares of fabric that go with your quilt or something neutral. Fold the squares into a triangle. Place the triangle onto top corners of the backside of quilt. Sew corners into the quilt when you do your binding to secure. When hanging the quilt use a rod the length of the quilt and fits inside the corner pockets.”

APRIL QUILT GUILD MEETING IN FORT ROBINSON

WOMEN POWER at FORT ROBINSON……..The Women’s Army Corps (WAC) was a women’s-only branch of the U.S. Army that existed from May 15, 1942 until it was integrated and disbanded in 1978. In 1943, the Army sent a detachment of WACs to Fort Robinson. Their duties included a variety of jobs at the post, which would relieve men to do other duties. WACs at Fort Robinson lived in a compound behind the officer’s row. Their compound had a mess hall, a combination recreation hall and beauty shop, and a two-story barracks. There was controversy about assigning women to Fort Robinson, but the women performed and accomplished many important duties while stationed there. Some performed secretarial duties or served as dispatchers. Others ran the filling station or worked in the motor pool. Many were capable truck drivers who drove salvage to the Fort Warren Depot near Cheyenne. Still other women drove the German prisoners-of-war to their work sites around the fort. When it was announced that WACs were coming to the fort, the rank and file men were mixed about whether it was a good idea. Reactions ranged from anger at losing “cushy” jobs, worry at being transferred from the fort, to being happy at the sight of single women at the post. WACs were controversial and faced many critics. However, many generals welcomed them. General Douglas MacArthur said they were his best soldiers because they worked harder, complained less and were better disciplined than his men. This information summarized and reprinted from article “The Women’s Army Corps” in Out Yonder Fort Robinson print by Scottsbluff Star Herald, March 2018. Article was originally written by Irene North.

Don’t Get Stalled by PerfectionDon’t Get Stalled by PerfectionWorrying about your quilt’s imperfections will

consume more time than you can imagine. Small mistakes don’t mean you have to take your quilt apart. If it doesn’t alter the size of the quilt, then

move on. There are no perfect quilts and agonizing over a couple of intersections not

matching won’t finish your quilt. Chalk it up to experience. You’ll get it right on the next quilt. I love what Angela Walters says, “A finished quilt

is better than a perfect quilt.”Courtesy of seasonedhomemaker.com

KNOW HOW TO ZIP IT.............“When putting an outside zipper in a bag or purse, I make a zipper tab to cover any space between the zipper ends and the bag. Plus, it gives the bag a nice finished look. Decide on the size of your tab. I like the sides of the tab to extend at least a 1/4" to a 1/2" wider than the zipper. Ex. For a 1 1/2" square tab, cut a piece of fabric 3 1/4" x 2".  With right sides together, fold piece in half, long sides together. Sew along both sides only, press seams, turn right side out, press again. Lay tab on bag just below zipper, with raw edge facing zipper. Sew a 1/4" seam across raw edge. Press the tab up and over zipper. Sew along the two sides and bottom, as close to the edges as possible. This forms a "pocket" over the zipper to hide the ends." Courtesy of Tina Graham

SMOOTH SAILING......“Sewers Aid, a silicone product I use when my thread is not sewing smoothly.  A few beads along places the spool, rubbed in, frequently solves the problem.  If I am machine quilting I might add more after 15 minutes of quilting.  I also use a small drop at each end of a zipper that does not slide smoothly.  I have never had any negative effects, no spotting, etc. I bought this little bottle over 20 years ago, from JoAnns.  You only use a few drops.” Courtesy of Elaine Moore

Keep clean…….USE CHENILLE STEMS FOR CLEANING YOUR MACHINE. They are very inexpensive and easy to find at craft stores. They can be bent or looped to fit into tiny, out of the way spaces. They collect the dust and lint and can be wiped off and reused. Also, if you trim them or keep folding them, you can use them multiple times.
