Meeting Minutes 03/21/2015 West Way Christian Church Scottsbluff, NECall to OrderThe meeting was called to order by President Lori Sanders at 9:30am. All were welcomed. Five guests were introduced: Jerry Lewis, Marilyn Lewis, Jan Holly, Rene James and Dawn Barrington.

Minutes The minutes from the February, 2015 meeting as printed in the March, 2015 Panhandle Patches Newsletter page 3-5 were offered for approval or correction. The minutes were approved. The Secretary read several flyers of quilting opportunities coming to our area.

Treasurer’s Report Cindy Scheinost presented the bills since last meeting for approval to be paid: West Way Christian Church - building rent for March meeting - $100.00; Jan Sears – Program for March- Quilt Appraisal - $50.00; Marla Marx – March class and kits - $310.00; Kim Cantrell – Newsletter expenses – 262.06; Total $722.06

A motion was made by Jan Sears to approve the bills. The bills were approved and the Treasurers report was filed for audit.

Reports of Standing CommitteesCommunity Service Sandy Daniels and Dianne Cooper reported that our Guild has made 111 pillowcases for The Doves Program. They introduced Lisa and Sara from Doves. Lisa thanked the Guild for the generous donation of the pillowcases. She went on to explain the different aspects of the Doves Program in our Community. She encouraged us to donate old and outdated cell phones. These can still be used for 911 calls and are very beneficial in a crisis situation.

Block of the MonthSusan Simmons, Heather Harsh and Karen Walker reported that there were 39 BOM’s for this month. The blocks were divided into 2 groups of 19 each. Winners of the 19 blocks were Liz Prochaska and Donna Riesen. The committee demonstrated the April BOM – “Scrappy Wind Mills”. Quilters were encouraged to use fall colors, especially chocolate brown and gold. Three pre-cut kits were won by Dianna Hatch, Sharon Steinmart and Peg Henderson.

Challenge ProjectJan Sears reminded everyone of the rules for the challenge and encouraged guild members to complete their challenge project. Make a sun by any technique you wish to use.

Fat Quarter RaffleLari Herman reported that the Guild collected $27.00 for the fat Quarter Raffle. The winner of the April Fat Quarter raffle was Donna Riesen.

Door PrizesWanda Mowry distributed the door prizes. This month’s door prizes were: Placemat pattern and fabric donated by Platte Valley Vac & Sew won by Bonny Ingwerson; “Over the door” pattern and hanger donated by Platte Valley Vac & Sew won by Jerry Lewis; 2 cuts of Fabric donated by Platte Valley Vac & Sew won by Irene Howard; Package of 50 Batiks donated anonymously won by Shirley Hanoch; “Give Thanks” Pattern donated by the Quilt Stop won by Judy Ostermiller; “Wrappin it up” Pattern donated by the Quilt Stop won by LouEtta McHenry; “Carol’s Convertible Purse” pattern donated by the Quilt Stop won by Sharon Cripps; Storage Case

Fall Retreat Lori Sanders reminded Guild members that the $50.00 deposit is now being collected for the retreat. Checks can be given to Lori today.

Fat Quarter Opportunity Twyla Worth and Ann Kuncl gave an explanation of the fat quarter basket opportunity. The March Basket was won by Marsha Hoisington.

Hostess Committee Diane Renander thanked the March Hostesses for the delicious items on the snack table. She listed the Hostess committee for the April meeting in Chadron. Members can bring a sack lunch or eat out. The church will also be having a lunch fundraiser on that date. Our meeting needs to be finished by 11:30 am so they are able to host their lunch at 12:00pm. Members who wish can purchase lunch there at the church.

Diane also encouraged all of the members to think about helping next year on a Hostess Committee. She reminded the members that you don’t have to necessarily bake or cook to be on a committee. Items can be purchased as well.

MembershipDiane Downer reported 67 members and guests attended the meeting.

Program CommitteeIrene Howard reported on the programs for the following year. September-no program; October – Lone Star Quilt Program and class; November – Potluck Christmas Party; January, February and March – Cindy Scheinost will teach a continuing class called “Sunshine and Shadows”; April – Chadron Quilt Show; May – Paper piecing for both beginners and experienced piecers taught by Patty Calhoun.

The group was questioned as to whether there was interest for a class at the June meeting. The group decision was not to have a June class.

Program CoordinatorSusan Simmons reminded those taking Marla’s class of the time frame. She also announced that there are 10 people signed up for the May class which is the minimum amount to hold the class. More can sign up if they wish to.

Quilt ShowNancy Leavenworth reminded Guild members that she will take any and all donations for the Silent Auction.Heather Harsh reminded members to sign up for the Quilt Show Workforce.

WebsiteSharon Armstrong reported that the quilt Registration Forms are in the Newsletter and on the Website. Three copies are needed. Sharon suggested that members print one, fill it out and then print 2 copies.

The Block of the Month Directions are going up today.

The library website link is presently not working. Call or e-mail Gayle if you would like a book.

Quilt Show AssistantLori reminded those that are working on the Quilt Show to turn in any bills to Vickie Wiens.

Quilt MomSusan Simmons reported that the Serendipity Quilt is currently in Hemingford at Pat’s Creative quilt Shop. It will be shown at the Monument Mall next weekend. During Shop Hop, April 9-19, it will be displayed at Platte Valley Vac & Sew.

Raffle TicketsLouEtta McHenry reported that 77 more tickets were sold since the last meeting. There are a total of 1192 tickets sold to date. She read a list of 35 Guild members who have not turned in their tickets reminding them to do so as soon as possible.

New BusinessThe next Advisory Board Meeting will be held on April 16th at High Plains Budweiser. All are welcome to attend.

The April meeting will be in Chadron at the Methodist Church so all may attend the Quilt Show after the meeting. If anyone needs a ride or can offer a ride to someone, contact Lori Sanders.

AnnouncementsGayle Rojas has a new address: 104 E 35th Street in Scottsbluff. She has also moved the Guild Library books with her. Directions were given on how to check a book out of the Guild Library.

Cindy Scheinost mentioned that Boy Scout Troop 17 in Gering has 4 new Eagle Scouts. She asked members if anyone knew which troop assists in our Quilt Show. Several members agreed to try and find this information.

Karen Walker reported on the Bus Trip to the National Quilt Festival in Denver which will take place on May 2nd. There will be 500+ quilts on display, 50 Vendors from all over and also the Hoffman Challenge projects will be displayed. There will also be a quilt Lecture in the afternoon. If we have 20 or more members attending, the admission cost will be $10.00. The Bus will cost $20.00 per person if we have 55 people. Member cost is $32.00. Non member cost is $45.00. A food court is available at the Venue.The Oregon Trail Days Quilt Show will be held on July10th-12th.

Bus Trip toDenver National Quilt Festival

Saturday, May 2

This is a juried and judged quilt competitionwith the theme of "Attitude @ Altitude".Over 500 beautiful quilts, garments and

textile art will be displayed.There is a merchants mall with everything for the

quilter, textile artist or needle crafter.Free demonstrations and there is a 2 pm lecture that you could sign up for with Dierdra McElroy.

Itinerary:7 am -leave Scottsbluff K-mart parking lot (there will be a stop en-route at Johnson's Corner, CO - yes there is a restroom on the bus, but it is small)

11:30 am- arrive at Denver Merchants Mart and see the show (you may eat on the bus, or there at the Merchants Mart)

4:30 pm- The bus will be available at the entrance for loading (if you will want to put purchases in the bottom luggage area, please have some way to identify your things)

5 pm - We will promptly leave, (please use the rest rooms before boarding there will be a stop - again at Johnson's Corner and you may purchase food and use rest rooms) We will go straight home out of consideration for people who have a distance to travel once we get to Scottsbluff.

9:30-10 pm - We should arrive back at the Kmart parking lot.

The fee, IF the bus is full, will be $32 for PQG members and $45 for non members. If the bus is not full, we will equally split the amount needed and collect it on May 2. It will be open to non-members on April 1st. The fee includes the cost of the bus and entrance to the show.

We have always had a great time and have seen lots of wonderful quilts - so you won't want to miss this opportunity!

“A heart-felt thanks from the Community Service committee to everyone who contributed food items and pillowcases for the Doves. We have provided 112 pillowcases for a very special organization in the panhandle. At the meeting on Saturday, the Doves shared with us that they touched over 800 lives last year. Thank you generous ladies!!!” The 112 pillowcase count was also submitted to the 1 Million Pillowcase Challenge with American Patchwork and Quilting. The count is currently 615,417!!! Sandy Daniels

Thank You Thank you for inviting me to talk to the guild about appraisals and judging in March on “What Its Worth”. Thanks also for your questions and kind comments afterwards. Several of you asked about having appraisals done, and I think it will be hard to schedule them for after the meetings the next 2 months due to the guild programs. So, when I stopped at Prairie Pines later, it was decided to set up an appraisal day for Saturday, May 30, 2015. There will be more information in the next newsletter. Jan Sears
