Byaluckycircumstanceinthelate1880ssomeIowafarmersfiguredoutthattheeastendoftheGrandValleyoftheWesternSlopeofColoradowasagreatplacetogrowpeaches.
AmannamedJ.L.Oliverplantedthefirsttreesin1891,nearly120yearsago.PartofPalisade’ssecretwasthe“milliondollarwind”whichblowsthroughthevalleyandkeepsthefruittreesfromfreezingmostof
thetime,andmuchthoughtandeffortwasgiventotheirrigationcanalsthatwaterourdryvalleyeventoday.
ForyearsGrandJunctionhadapeachdayandpeachqueens,buttobehonest,Palisadewastoobusy.Mostofthetownwassomehowinvolvedwiththepeachharvest.Itwasn’tuntil1968that
PalisadeclaimeditsheritageandstarteditsownPeachFestival.Mostoftoday’speachfarmersarestilltoobusyharvestingpeachestoattend,buttheydon’tmindifwecelebratethewonderfulfruitsoftheirlabors.Solet’scelebratepeaches!Hereisalocal’sguideforvisitorstothePeachFestival.ThiswilltellyouhowtogetthemostoutofyourPeachFestivalexperience.WhenyougettotownpickupaPalisadeTribune.Itshouldhavemorecompleteinformationandsomemapsyoumayneedinit.Thecosttogetintothefestivalattheparkis$4peradultperday.Childrenaged6-12are$3.Kidsunder6arefree.Mostdowntowneventsarefree.Nodogsareallowedinthepark,notevenlittleones,please.FromdowntownandseveralotherspotsyoucancatchthefreeshuttlestoRiverbendPark.Allyouhavetodoisparkyourcar,getontheshuttleandavoidthecongestedandconfus-ingdrive.Theshuttlecomesbyaboutevery20minutesanddropsyourightatthepark,andoneisalmostalwayswaitingwhenyouarereadytogo.Agritoursarefunandeducationalforthewholefamily.OneofthemostfunthingstodoonavisittoPalisadeistheAgritours.SpecialPeachFestivaltourswillrunallweekendfrom10a.m.to4p.m.ThePalisadeChamberwebsite(www.palisadecoc.comorwww.palisade-peachfest.com)cangiveyoualltheoptions.“Feast intheFields”Thisyear thereare twoopportunities to takepart inspecialdiningevents.Afour-coursegourmetdinnerwillbeheldFridaynightatZ’sOrchardandSaturday
