A man named J.L. Oliver planted the first trees in 1891, nearly 120 years ago. Part of Palisade’s secret was the “million dollar wind” which blows through the valley and keeps the fruit trees from freezing most of the time, and much thought and effort was given to the irrigation canals that water our dry valley even today. For years Grand Junction had a peach day and peach queens, but to be honest, Palisade was too busy. Most of the town was somehow involved with the peach harvest. It wasn’t until 1968 that Palisade claimed its heritage and started its own Peach Festival. Most of today’s peach farmers are still too busy harvesting peaches to attend, but they don’t mind if we celebrate the wonderful fruits of their labors. So let’s celebrate peaches! Here is a local’s guide for visitors to the Peach Festival. This will tell you how to get the most out of your Peach Festival experience. When you get to town pick up a Palisade Tribune. It should have more complete information and some maps you may need in it. The cost to get into the festival at the park is $4 per adult per day. Children aged 6-12 are $3. Kids under 6 are free. Most downtown events are free. No dogs are allowed in the park, not even little ones, please. From downtown and several other spots you can catch the free shuttles to Riverbend Park. All you have to do is park your car, get on the shuttle and avoid the congested and confus- ing drive. The shuttle comes by about every 20 minutes and drops you right at the park, and one is almost always waiting when you are ready to go. Agritours are fun and educational for the whole family. One of the most fun things to do on a visit to Palisade is the Agritours. Special Peach Festival tours will run all weekend from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Palisade Chamber website (www.palisadecoc.com or www.palisade- peachfest.com) can give you all the options. “Feast in the Fields” This year there are two opportunities to take part in special dining events. A four-course gourmet dinner will be held Friday night at Z’s Orchard and Saturday night at High Country Orchard. Both dinners will feature Palisade peaches, wine and produce. Seating is limited, reservations are required. Check out the Chamber’s website for menus and more details. Downtown Palisade has lots to offer its guests. All weekend downtown Palisade will have live music in the Town Center Plaza. The restaurants will offer special peach centered menus for quiet sit down family dinners. Stop in at the Palisade Brewery for a hand crafted beer or the Peach Street Distillers for a taste of their great vodkas, gin, grappa, whiskey, bourbon and brandy. Our fine art galleries, antique store and other shops will have great deals for the weekend. Friday afternoon from 1 to 8 p.m. at Riverbend Park there will be vendors and live music. Peach Cuisine seminars will be offered from 2 to 7 p.m. and all day Saturday. In downtown Palisade there will be music by the Rocky Mountain Ramblers and art demos from 6 to 9 p.m. You can begin early Saturday morning with the Lions Club Pancake Breakfast from 7 to 10 a.m. atVeteran’s Memorial Park at Main and Front St. Not only do you get hot, delicious pancakes, ham, coffee and orange juice, but sliced peaches all for $5. The Peach Festival Parade begins at 9 a.m. at 3rd and Main. The Festival at Riverbend Park opens at 10 a.m. and runs to 6 p.m. There will be live music all day. This year there will be a“beer garden”. There is a peach-eating contest for the kids and seminars on peach cuisine all day. There is also Fruit Grower’s History tent where you can see a vintage travelogue done by the railroad about Palisade peaches. In downtown Palisade there will be music in theTown Center Plaza from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Pedal, Paddle, Pedal - On Sunday a new event is Pedal, Paddle, Pedal, a three-stage race featuring mountain biking, flat- water river racing and road biking. For more information on this race, visit the Chamber website.
