Speaking of Student Success…

Triton employees step up to give students a leg up The program, Triton Employees as Mentors, was developed to address the needs of full-time students who are taking two or moredevelopmental education courses in read-ing, math, or writing. According to JackieWerner, Program Coordinator and StudentSuccess Strategist, the program is currentlyserving 87 first-year Triton students –exceeding its goal for the first year by 45percent.

Sanchez admits that, at first, she didn’tknow where the college library was locatedor that on-campus tutors were available. But with Zurawska’s guidance, it wasn’tlong before she became acclimated to thecampus. “The program has provided mewith a helping hand so that I can getadapted to Triton without feeling over-whelmed,” Sanchez said.

TEAM students have welcomed the extrasupport from their mentors, including mo-tivation to keep up with their classes. “It’simportant that Triton employees provideour students – new and returning – withthe information and guidance they need to be successful,” Zurawska said. “This pro-gram provides that through one-on-one interaction.”

Werner is encouraged by the program’sstrong start and is already thinking aboutnext steps. “Our hope is that this programwill expand into the spring semester. Wealso intend to create a link with our districthigh schools and inform counselors aboutthe program and how their Triton-boundstudents can benefit.”

Recognizing our partners in education

When Jocelyn Sanchez of Elmwood Parkinitially enrolled at Triton College, shedidn’t know that she would have her ownpersonal “coach” in Director of AdmissionsIzabela Zurawska to accompany her on hereducational journey while participating inthe new TEAM mentoring program.

to measure their college readiness. “Con-ducting this test with our juniors allowedus to see how effective our educationalprogram is so that we can work on target-ing what’s needed to prepare our studentsfor college-level coursework,” Prale said.

Dr. Turner said the college is eager to em-bark on similar projects with other localschools. “We want students to be success-ful and have the foundation to be success-ful at the next level.”

Another inspiring partnership bloomedfrom Triton’s Horticulture Department and Club and Franklin Park School District84. Triton students and staff taught 880elementary school students how to grow

TRITON COLLEGEFOUNDATION

Dear Community Members:

“Triton College is a model of teaching excellence and student success.” So begins Triton’s Vision Statement. It continues, “We are a community collegethat embraces the educational, training, and personal development needs of the diverse communities we serve through innovation in our programs and approachto learning.” When I look at the futureof Triton College, that’s what I see – a vision of the community college thatyou need Triton to be.

There is no shortage of input toward our ongoing work in that regard. From a broad view of a new century, to thecollege’s growth over 50 years, to ourchallenges and achievements over thepast seven years since our last accredi-tation visit, to our more recent work with Achieving the Dream, we haveinput that will help fill in the details ofour future and build our Strategic Plan.

The 21st Century Commission on the Future of Community Colleges developeda report that calls on colleges to Redesign,Reinvent, and Reset. We must Redesignour students’ educational experiences toincrease completion rates and collegereadiness. Triton is redesigning an entirebuilding that will feature collaborativelearning spaces. The open learning andsimulated health care space being createdin our H Building will greatly enhance thelearning environment. We must Reinventinstitutional roles to meet education andemployment needs with strong supportstructures. Triton’s University Center is oneway we help guide our students with clearpaths to a baccalaureate degree. Also, strengthening our partnerships with busi-ness and industry and other educationalinstitutions are vital as we look to the future. We must Reset the system in sup-port of reclaiming the American Dream. Our focus must remain on student success.

As we at Triton College prepare for ouraccreditation visit in 2013 with a thoroughself-study, I reflect a great deal on ourpast challenges and achievements.

As we prepare to celebrate our 50th Anniversary in 2014, I can’t help but looknot only to the past but forward to thenext 50 years and what you need TritonCollege to be. It looks to be an excitingtime!

Please do not hesitate to contact my office whenever you have a suggestion, question, or concern.

Sincerely,

Dr. Patricia Granados,President, Triton College

Did you know that the photos you take during special occasions or the website youdesigned for a friend’s business can be morethan just casual hobbies? With the righttraining, your talent can lead to a profitableand intensely satisfying career.

Triton’s Visual Communications program provides students with hands-on experiencesin graphic design, digital photography andvideography. Faculty with real-world experi-ence combine art and technology in the pro-gram’s courses so that students gain practicalknowledge and skills.

Interim Dean of Arts & Sciences Ric Segoviasaid some students initially enroll in just onecourse, thinking that it will give them all theknowledge they need. They soon realize thatthere is much more to learn and their moti-vation is so high, they begin taking morecourses, eventually earning a certificate ordegree from Triton, he said.

One of the unique benefits of the program

Prepare for a successful career in the digital arts at Triton Collegeis its focus on learning the business aspects of the digital arts, along with the technicaland creative facets. “To educate studentsabout the professional business world, wegive students assignments similar to the timeand demand constraints they would experi-ence working in the industry,” said Chair ofthe Visual Communications DepartmentLorette Dodt, who is currently serving as Interim Dean of Business and Technology. Dodt is also a professional photographer with her own studio. “Plus, in our PortfolioDesign and Production course, we help stu-dents develop their portfolios for employers.”

She added that in the advanced digital pho-tography classes, students take field trips togain experience shooting on location as wellas in a studio. “We try to give our students asmuch practical experience as possible so thatthey can be successful in society,” she said.

While many students go on to work for largecorporations, Dodt said, there are other stu-

dents who work as freelancers or start theirown business. The program is especially valu-able for business owners who would like togain more productivity without having tohire additional employees. “There are plentyof businesses that may have an employeewho takes care of graphic design but couldalso easily take on website design or photog-raphy projects if they knew how,” she said.“Students can learn those additional skillshere at Triton.”

Triton offers an associate’s degree in digitalphotography and graphic design and severalcertificates in its Visual Communications pro-gram: Digital Media, Graphic Design, DigitalPhotography and Layout and Design.

In its recent report, “Reclaiming the Ameri-can Dream: Community Colleges and theNation’s Future,” the American Associationof Community Colleges (AACC) predictstwo-thirds of all American jobs will requirea postsecondary certificate or degree bythe year 2018. This prediction makes com-munity colleges a valuable option forachieving the American Dream.

An overview of this report was introducedby Triton College President Patricia Grana-dos at the college’s Fall Faculty Workshopon Aug. 24 to initiate dialogue and ongoing engage-ment about redesigning student’s educa-tional experiences; reinventinginstitutional roles; and resetting the systemto create incentives for student and institu-tional success.

Among its first steps in this direction is im-provement in college readiness and com-pletion by working with local high schoolsto provide a clearer understanding of col-

lege expectations for students. The collegehas already seen marked improvementfrom its 2011 implementation of itsmandatory placement tests, which placesstudents into developmental educationclasses based on their test scores, insteadof placing them in a course where they’llbe unsuccessful. The college also plans tofocus on closing the skills gap to help stu-dents become better prepared to join theworkforce.

“This report challenges us to accomplisho ur institutional mission to be profoundlydifferent from our current mode of opera-tion and also compel us to adapt creativelyin this changing environment,” Granadossaid. “Throughout the year, the campuscommunity will engage in conversationabout what Triton needs to become in thenext 50 years to address the challenges ofthe nation and the communities weserve.”
