From your School Councillors

School Council met on Monday 24 June, a few days after the winter solstice, also known as the shortest day of the year brrrr.

We great news from our Grounds and Facilities committee, including confirmation of the Victorian Schools Building Authority grant of $151,000 toward the redevelopment of the central playing area as part of the Grounds Master Plan. We also heard about improvements to safety at the School: VicRoads are working on plans for a new Pink Zone in Flemington Street (for safe drop off and pick up), and there will be new loud speakers installed over the school holidays as teachers and students were commonly not hearing announcements. Finally, we also approved two draft policies be shared with the school community for feedback and review. Policies impact everyone at School Council, so please take a moment to review our draft homework policy and emergency management policy. You can do so on the School website. If you wish to share feedback about either of the policy, or communicate with School Council about another matter, you can contact Bart Sbeghen on [email protected]. The next meeting of School Council is scheduled for Monday 29 July. Karly Abery, School Council Secretary

Interschool Chess Success - again!

By Peter Hormann

On Wednesday (17-July), 11 students from Flemington Primary School participated in another qualifying round of the Victorian Inter-school State Chess Competition. Moonee Ponds Primary School hosted the event, and 88 students from 11 schools took part.

Flemington’s players (pictured) were:

Grade 2 - Harry N., Noah C.

Grade 3 – Wellington A., Sebastian M.

Grade 4 – James N., Thomas A., Leo K.,

Grade 6 – Tama M-S., Benison A., Emelie A.,

Thomas H.

Each student played 7 games time clock limited to 15 minutes per player.

This event was an official Chess Victoria Zonal Tournament and the best 5 schools all qualify for the Victorian State semi-finals played later this year. Congratulations to Leo, who individually finished 2nd by winning 6 of his seven games. Our team scored a total of 28 points and were placed 1st overall - woo-hoo! The top 5 scoring players were Leo (6 points), Thomas H (6 points), Benison (5.5 points), James (5.5 points), Thomas A (5 points). Clifton Hill Primary School was 2nd (26 points) and Princess Hill P.S. 3rd (23.5 points). Spensley Street P.S. and Moonee Ponds P.S. also qualified. Well done to everyone who participated. All the students showed goodwill to their opponents by introducing themselves, and shaking hands before and after each game. Noah said that he ”enjoyed visiting another school, meeting other students, and doing his best”. Thank you to parents Ruth and Paul that assisted with transport and supervision. Lastly, a big thank you to our school’s Chess Club teacher, David Beaumont, for helping students prepare for the competition. You can learn more about chess at Flemington P.S. at http://www.chesseducation.com.au/ .
