Digital animals, construction drones and furniture that is smart in all senses of the word are among the innovations that could soon be heading into, under and above our homes, roboticists revealed last week.

Speaking at Re.Work’s the Future of Robotics forum in London, experts from academia, industry and the startup scene came together to unveil the latest innovations from their labs, share their experiences and discuss the challenges of turning prototypes into viable products. “Robotics investment is really on the increase,” said Nikita Johnson, founder of Re.work.

But while robotics groups across the UK are bristling with good ideas, she believes the country is lagging behind when it comes to commercialisation. “Where we need to catch up on is really making sure that that [work from universities] gets to market and thinking about how we can try and integrate that into industry so that it does have an impact and it’s not just left in the lab.”

Among those aiming to bridge this gap is Sebastian Conran, designer in residence at the University of Sheffield, north England. Working with researchers including Professor Tony Prescott, director of the Sheffield Centre for Robotics, Conran has been involved in pioneering solutions for the household, from robotic companions to “smart” furniture that can assist elderly or ill people. “Robotics is the new rock’n’roll,” he says. “It’s finding compelling uses for it.”

How robots are revolutionising our world

No time for a dog, but missing a pet? Want to retrofit your house without turning it into a building site? Wondering how you could fix your roof without a ladder? Robots could be the answer.

DronesWhile drones might evoke images of

huge military unmanned aerial vehi-cles, researchers are keen to point out that they can also provide solutions to numerous civilian conundrums, from fixing a roof to taking the perfect selfie or even monitoring pollution levels. Currently on display at the Science Museum, London, is a 3D-printing drone created by Dr Mirko Kovac from Imperial College London that can extrude a foam material while on the wing.

His biological model for the device was swiftlets, birds that knock up a nest using their saliva. Kovac believes such drones could be useful in repair-ing inaccessible, damaged regions of the home or other structures. But he is confident there is more to learn from the natural world, including ways of increasing observation time for sensing drones without the need for greater energy.

Robo-petsMove over Tamgotchi, a new dig-

ital pet is about to roll into town. This cutesy robot, set to be launched

nationwide next spring, boasts the ability to respond to voices, recognise objects and even take itself to a charg-ing station when zonked. Under devel-opment by a team that encompasses Eaglemoss publications, Conran and robotics experts including Prescott and Dr Ben Mitchinson from the University of Sheffield, the bot — it is claimed — mimics a real animal.

“The control systems inside the robot are modelled on what we think mammalian brains are doing,” says Prescott. The aim is that you’ll be able to train your new companion. “It will be learning according to the same prin-ciples, so stimulus response learning, or reinforcement learning, that animals can do,” he adds.

You robo-pet will be fitted with cam-eras and microphones; you can keep tabs on what it can see and hear via an app on your tablet or smartphone.

But rather than arriving as a ready-made bundle of robotic joy, it will be available as a magazine-based build-it-yourself kit.

Q-BotSeeking to take the grunt work out

of the construction industry, q-bot is a new company on the block, deploying compact, sturdy robots to apply under-floor insulation, removing the need to pull up floorboards and install cut-to-fit panels.

“A quarter of the UK’s properties are more than 100 years old and the vast majority, 7 million of them, have got suspended timber floors which just allow cold air to come up,” says Mathew Holloway, managing director of the company, which is now offering the service commercially.

When introduced into the bowels of a building, the robot maps and surveys the area, providing insights into what lies beneath, before using the data to systematically spray insulating mate-rial to the underside of flooring. It can then record the depth of the insula-tion applied. The benefits? Toasty toes, fewer drafts and lower bills — without the need for a huge upheaval.

MotiRecently crowned grand winner

of the inaugural Robot Launch star-tup competition, Moti is a robotic ball designed and created by fledgling

company Leka, and is aimed at the healthcare sector. With robotics groups around the world exploring the poten-tial of robot-assisted therapy for chil-dren with autism, the Leka team have developed a programmable plastic sphere that can change colours, move and respond to users.

They believe their interactive tool will be able to help autistic children to communicate and socialise. Upcoming prototypes are expected to boast more sensors, collect data and have the abil-ity to play music; the team are hoping to make Moti commercially available by 2016.

Mecha monstersRobot wars could be coming to a liv-

ing room near you, thanks to Reach Robotics’ gaming robots: Mecha mon-sters. Controlled by an app on a tablet or smartphone, users can “fight” their robots with pre-programmed moves and use developer software to create new actions.

“In the industry at the moment, the products you get are either very sim-ple products that kids are bored with - and adults are bored with - in a week’s time or really complex products that once you have programmed it’s some-thing you can’t really do much more with,” says Silas Adekunle, founder of the startup company. “We want to create something that allows you to have fun and also has an opportunity to educate.”

Due to be launched for pre-order on crowdfunding site Indigogo next month, the first Mecha monsters are expected to ship in time for Christmas next year.

Smart furnitureAnother innovation from the fruit-

ful collaboration that includes Prescott and Conran is smart furniture that appears to blend in rather than stand out. Currently under development is a smartphone-controlled cantilevered table that can navigate around the home or hospital to transport items, as well as adjust its height and tilt. With a tablet or iPad hooked up, users can talk to friends, family and healthcare providers face to face, as well as make use of voice and gesture control.

But Conran believes its uses could be manifold: “With a bit of modification, so people don’t pinch your huice, you could see it in room service,” he says.

The World Teachers Day was celebrated in the Doha Modern Indian School recently with a

wide variety of literary activities. The Department of English coor-

dinated the activities conducted for Grade 3 to 11 in the classrooms. Students of the Primary section made colourful greeting cards paying tribute to their teachers while Grades 6 to 11 wrote poems and essays and designed posters.

The topic given for versification was ‘The Ideal Teacher’ and essays were

written on the topic ‘Teachers are nation builders’. Posters were made on the theme “A Teacher is a Candle burning unto itself, giving light to the World.’ Students poured out their thoughts and ideas about teachers and the cards and posters were displayed on the bulletin boards.

The divergent skills of students were encouraged through these activities and it gave them an opportunity to express their warm feelings and grati-tude for their teachers.

Qatar Academy welcomed representatives from the Council of International Schools and New England Association of Schools and Colleges for the accreditation visit of

its Early Education Centers. Aside from touring the Center’s two facilities located in QA Primary School and HBKU Student Center and observing classes, CIS Regional Accreditation Officer/International Advisor Monica Greeley and NEASC Commission on American and International Schools Abroad Director Peter Mott also met with key administra-tion staff, teachers and parents of students enrolled in EEC.

Accreditation for early childhood education help raise the quality of programs aimed at young chil-dren. In Qatar, the visit brings to the fore Qatar Academy’s visionary role in implementing early education in the country. “The community of the

Early Education Center is very pleased and proud to support CIS and NEASC in the implementa-tion of an accreditation process for early years,” Principal Karen Nicholls remarked. “It enabled us to research what was important for very young children to learn and ways to support that learn-ing. Through the self-study we were able to identify areas for improvement and also recognize the posi-tive work that was being done in our centre. The accreditation process ensures that we maintain the highest possible standards in achieving this goal”.

“In developing the centre we have spent time considering two important elements,” Nicholls says. “The first being ‘Our Image of the Child’. This is important because it shapes the type of learning engagements we offer to young children. For instance, we believe that children are curi-ous so we develop activities that allow the child to

explore, discover, become researchers and interact with their environments through exploration. The other important development in the EEC was that of environments. We wanted classrooms to reflect elements of home, to make home-school connec-tions; contain artifacts from Qatar to give children a sense of who they are and to provide attractive and interesting places for them to come and explore every day. These are the two things we are most excited about (the visit)”.

Gems American Academy-Qatar (GAA), the first Gems Education school in Qatar,

has welcomed its first intake of stu-dents. Students from Kindergarten to Grade 5 have now settled into the Al Wakrah-based school.

Over the last month students have been engaged in a variety of activi-ties ranging from student assemblies to after school activities. At back to school night all students performed a musical interlude by singing and play-ing instruments before their parents

and then as Eid approached we rec-ognized a very special celebration was organised. It involved the welcoming home of those friends returning from their Hajj.

The after school activities are up and running too. Many activities

appear to be favourites like Spanish Club, Cultural Dance, Lego Club, Choir, Robotics and Yoga.

Micheal Wood, Principal of GAA, said he is honoured to welcome stu-dents to the first Gems school in the country. The Peninsula

Nine well-known Filipino artistes have come together for a concert

for a cause dubbed ‘Teleserye Bida’ on October 31 at Al Gharafa Sports Club Stadium.

Organisers L’Arc En Ciel Events said part of the concert’s proceeds will benefit two Filipino paediatric cancer patients Xander Reyes and Dominique Havanna Noot.

The concert features five of the Philippines’ hottest male actors and screen idols—Enchong Dee, Gerald Anderson, Rayver Cruz, Xian Lim, and Enrique Gil— with the special par-ticipation actress and performer Maja Salvador together with guests, Viva Hotbabes, Gwen Garci and Jennifer Lee and comedian Boobay.

These five male artists are known collectively as Teleserye Bida, because they star in top-rating Philippine tel-evision series that are avidly followed by the Filipino community around the world through The Filipino Channel (TFC).

Viva Hotbabes and Boobay will sing, dance and do stand-up comedy

during the show which will run for three hours without opening acts by local artists.

“I would like to give the Filipino community viewers a concert that is jam-packed with celebrities whom I am sure they will enjoy,” said Madam Mariam Al Fadaaq, General Manager of the L’Arc En Ciel.

RV Francis, lead promoter of the concert, said he did not think twice when he was told of the purpose of the show which is to support the Filipino community here.

“In this event, you will not only enjoy watching the show but at the same time you will be able to help too,” said Francis.

The organizers are urging the Filipino community to support the show as part of the proceeds will be donated to three-year-old Filipino pediatric cancer patients Reyes and Noot in cooperation with the Qatar Red Cresent Society.

“We are really looking for spon-sors to aid the transplant and medi-cation of Xander and Dominique

that’s why we run many drives and campaigns. My deep gratitude to the event organizer who has initiated this campaign and has considered the children as one of their benefi-ciaries,” said Rodrigo ‘Roii’ Edulan, Leader and Head of the San Pedro Calungsod Filipino Community.

The Philippine Embassy is also in full support of this concert. According to Ambassador Crescente Relacion, it is commendable for the producers to conduct an event with a greater cause and the desire not just to pro-vide entertainment to Filipinos but the

will and desire to help those who are in need.

Meanwhile, United Filipino Organization in Qatar Chairperson, Frank Jamandre said the objectives of the event are clear and he will encour-age the Filipino organizations under his umbrella to support this event.

By Ellie Krieger

Because I am constantly in the kitchen creating new recipes, I hardly ever eat the same thing twice. So if a meal has made it

into my regular rotation, you know it has got to be something special. This salad has earned its place as my official go-to lunch; I have made it dozens of times and I never tire of it. It’s as simple as simple can be and takes less than 10 minutes to whip up, so it is ideal for a busy weekday lunch or light dinner.

It is really a showcase for one sublime ingredient: Italian tuna packed in olive oil, which can be found in glass jars at most high-end grocery stores. Although it might give you a bit of sticker shock (A 6.7-ounce jar cost me $7.99 recently at my local Whole Foods Market, but I have seen it sell for up to $14.99), once you try it you will see why it is a worthwhile indulgence. Put your typical canned-fish experience out of your mind completely. This tuna has a luxe steak-iness and pleasant aroma, and the oil in the jar is easily put to good use as the dressing base. Because you use just half a jar per serving, it is a pretty good value when you break it down and consider the quality of the meal you can create with it.

I usually enjoy it as paired here, with peppery arugula and crisp slivers of fresh fennel, but I will use whatever type of

greens I have on hand and add tomatoes, cucumber, red bell pepper, fresh parsley or whatever vegetable or herb is in my refrig-erator at the time. A squeeze of lemon juice is all that’s needed to complete the dressing.

I have written it up here to serve four, but the recipe is easily divided to serve one or two. Personally, I turn to it mostly as a lunch for one; the remaining jarred tuna can be refrigerated for up to three days. It’s a satisfying way to fuel a busy afternoon.

Arugula and Fennel Salad With Tuna

This 5-minute, 6-ingredient salad is des-tined to become your go-to lunch on

a busy day. The star ingredient, olive-oil-packed Italian tuna, is a bit of an indul-gence but a worthy one, as one taste of the delicate, rich flesh will prove.

Use pre-washed arugula to make prepa-ration even speedier, and feel free to use any vegetable you have on hand instead of the fennel.

From nutritionist and cookbook author Ellie Krieger.

4 servings (makes 8 cups)

Ingredients

5 cups lightly packed baby arugula (5 ounces)

1 large fennel bulb, cored and thinly sliced (preferably with a mandoline)

1 cup grape or cherry tomatoes, each cut in half

Two 6- or 7-ounce jars Italian olive-oil-packed tuna, preferably Tonnino brand tuna, oil reserved

2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepperKosher salt (optional)

Method:Combine the arugula, fennel and toma-

toes in a mixing bowl.Break up the tuna a bit with a fork to

create bite-size chunks; add them to the bowl along with 2 tablespoons of oil from the tuna jars. Add the lemon juice and pepper; toss to incorporate. The saltiness of different tuna brands varies widely, so taste first, then season lightly with salt only if needed.

Divide among individual bowls; serve right away.

HOLLYWOOD NEWS BOLLYWOOD NEWS

By Michael O’Boyle

As Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu neared his 50th birthday, he took stock of his string of

acclaimed, dark films, and decided to do something really scary: confront his own struggle with being an ego-maniacal filmmaker, in a comedy, in a single shot.

“Fear of the unknown is a great creative partner,” Inarritu said at the Morelia International Film Festival. “It makes you more aware and open to circumstances that you haven’t planned for. It lets you make advan-tages from your limitations.”

What emerged from his own mid-life crisis is Birdman, his fifth film and an absurd comedy-drama that explores how modern identity suffers from what Inarritu calls the “disease of popularity” spread by social media and a culture of celebrity.

The film, which opened in limited release this weekend, is being hailed

by critics as a masterpiece, a perfect fusion of form and content. Using what appears to be a single take, it tracks the breakdown of a has-been movie star who is trying to reinvent himself on the Broadway stage.

The Academy award-nominated Inarritu broke from his previous style seen in Amores Perros and Babel of deploying multiple storylines and juxtaposed time frames in bleak tales of fatal accidents that intertwine the lives of strangers.

“It was liberating to do comedy,” the Mexican director said. “It felt like playing in a jazz band.”

The film is still steeped in existen-tial angst, but it comically portrays the actor’s obsession with fame.

“In the times we now live, we have empowered the rest to tell us who we are,” Inarritu said.

“Now is a time where there are so many social networks, such need for validation ... you don’t have to be a star or a politician to want to have likes

or dislikes. Now there is a disease of popularity in the whole society.”

The camera, run by Academy-award winner Emmanuel Lubezki, weaves from dressing rooms, through hallways and out onto stage, following Riggan Thomson, played by Michael Keaton, as he rushes toward an opening night set for disaster.

All the time, Thomson is trying to escape the foul-mouthed voice in his head of Birdman, the feathered super-hero character from the franchise he abandoned years earlier before his career sank into obscurity.

On top of the virtuoso camera work, a jazz drum soundtrack drives the film, acting as the frenetic beating of Thomson’s erratic heart as scenes move between reality and his imagina-tion, where he has telekinetic powers and can fly.

The film could be seen as a satire of actors like Keaton, who himself walked away from playing Batman, but Inarritu says he was exploring his

own ego and creative process, while also skewering the superheroes of the Hollywood machine that produces “junk food” just to make money.

“I had this idea based on my own personal experience of hearing my voice torturing me ... elevating me to heights and then sending me to hell,” he said. “I thought it would be very interesting to explore the nature of that internal battle that we all have.”

Keaton’s performance and Inarritu’s direction are already stirring Oscar buzz, which could mark two-years running for Mexico after Alfonso Cuaron took best director this year for “Gravity,” which also won Lubezki an award for cinematography.

“It makes me feel like Riggan. My wings are really spreading, saying ‘you are the greatest,’” he jokes. “No. I think I am very aware (the Oscars) are very subjective. And the film is about that. It is ephemeral and it is nice, but it is not the important thing.” Reuters

Dia Mirza marries Sahil Sangha

Actress Dia Mirza, sporting a Ritu Kumar-designed green and beige ensemble, exchanged marital vows with her beau and business partner

Sahil Sangha here on Saturday. The couple, who got engaged in New York earlier this year, had an Arya

Samaj wedding ceremony at a farmhouse in Ghitorni here. The duo came out post wedding and posed for the shutterbugs.

If Dia looked royal in Kumar’s creation, the groom looked dapper in a Raghavendra Rathore-designed outfit.

“The look is classic with no embroidery and comprises a cream silk linen brocade achkan with an emerald green pocket square. This has been paired with an inner emerald green kurta which matches with what Dia wore,” Rathore said.

“An offwhite safa with a sarpech which has emeralds embedded com-pletes the look. Incidentally, we have also designed the outfits for his mehndi and sangeet,” he added.

According to sources, celebrities like Lara Dutta, Sushmita Sen Cyrus, Sahukar and Zayed Khan attended the wedding.

The former beauty queen has acted in Bollywood films such as Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein and Parineeta.

Dia, 32, is also a film producer. Sahil is a filmmaker who directed Love Breakups Zindagi, the first movie under their jointly owned banner, Born Free Entertainment.

Rajinikanth dubbed for Lingaa in 24 hours?

Superstar Rajinikanth has dubbed for his upcoming Tamil film Lingaa at a lightning speed. He is said to have finished dubbing for it in less

than 24 hours, much to the surprise of the film’s crew.“Rajini sir recently completed dubbing for the film in less than 24 hours.

Usually, dubbing takes a few days for most actors as it requires going over few lines in sync with the scenes. But Rajini sir finished dubbing most of his lines in one take,” a source from the film’s unit said.

Lingaa, which is currently in post-production, is completed, but for two songs.

“The introductory song and a duet are yet to be canned. Rest of the shooting has been completed. For one of the songs, the team plans to go to Europe,” he said.

The duet will feature Sonakshi Sinha and Rajinikanth.Directed by K S Ravi Kumar, the film is likely to release on superstar’s

“Gaga, Adele. That would be cool, Pink? We could do circus things,” said the 41-year-old star when asked about his dream duet partner for the show.

Harris has performed at the event in the past, but this will be his first time as host. The actor has hosted the Tony Awards last year and Emmy in 2013 and 2009.

“I want to do something different for the Academy Awards and don’t want to be super derivative of other shows. I would also like to honour the gravity of the Oscars without getting heavy and boring,” he said.

Nick Cannon, new selfie champion

Actor Nick Cannon has broken the record of taking the maximum number of selfies in an hour.

After receiving tips on how to take the speediest pictures, he blew the competition away. Nick starred alongside dancer Julianne Hough and took a massive 283 consecutive selfies, surpassing the previous record which stood at 279, reports femalefirst.co.uk.

“I did have some selfie training. My friends at Samsung showed me the best way,” said the comedian.

The attempt was part of Samsung’s new campaign #DITCHtheDSLR.As a result of their efforts, $50,000 has been donated by Samsung to

Film-maker Anurag Kashyap on Saturday said he is happy that the festival films are doing well commercially as well.

“I think the myth that the festival films don’t work commercially has changed. This myth is thing of the past now its good the audience has changed and the credit goes to the audience,” Kashyap said at the 16th MAMI film festival where he presented his critically acclaimed film Black Friday.

Directed by Kashyap, Black Friday featured Kay Kay Menon, Nawazuddin Siddiqui among others.

The proud film-maker says it feels great that this film is being screened after 10 years.

“It has been 10 years I have made this film... it feels great as a film-maker. I fought for four years with the court for this film and that was very challenging.”

The superheroes of DC Comics will battle the Marvel heroes at the box office, as Warner Bros. confirmed plans for upcoming films that

include new installments of The Lego Movie franchise and expansions of the Harry Potter world.

Masked hero Batman will get a starring role with Ben Affleck’s portrayal in Zack Snyder’s anticipated 2016 release of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Affleck will reprise the role for Snyder’s 2017’s Justice League Part One with Henry Cavill returning as Superman and Amy Adams as Lois Lane. Snyder will also direct Justice League Part Two for release in 2019.

Actress Gal Godot will debut as Wonder Woman in Batman v Superman, and helm her own Wonder Woman film in 2017.

Lego Batman, voiced by Will Arnett in this year’s hit animation The Lego Movie, will get his own spot-light in The Lego Batman Movie in 2017, and will also return in The Lego Movie 2 in 2018. The Lego franchise will also include Ninjago in 2016.

The new release dates and casting details were

issued by Time Warner Inc’s Warner Bros studios at the company’s investor conference. They come at a time when Disney’s Marvel superheroes such as Captain America, Iron Man and Avengers are ruling the box office.

“The demand for high quality video content is grow-ing fast — in the United States and around the world — as new technologies have created new platforms and millions of new connected consumers,” said Warner Bros. Chief Executive Kevin Tsujihara.

While the Harry Potter franchise concluded with its eighth instalment in 2011, three new films from the fantastical world of magic created by author J K Rowling will be released every two years from 2016,

starting with Fantastic Beasts. The new film will feature characters from the fic-

tional textbook written by Newt Scamander at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and will be directed by David Yates, the filmmaker behind the final four Potter movies.

A new band of DC heroes, the Suicide Squad, will get their own film in 2016, directed by Fury filmmaker David Ayer. The Suicide Squad are ruthless incarcer-ated villains who work for the government in high-risk missions.

Speedy hero The Flash will be played by 22-year-old Perks of Being a Wallflower actor Ezra Miller in a stan-dalone film in 2018, and Game of Thrones actor Jason Momoa will take the lead in Aquaman that same year.

Captain Marvel, who has the power to transform into six mythical heroes, will lead new film Shazamin 2019, and stage actor Ray Fisher will play the lead in 2020’s Cyborg, the superhero alter-ego of Victor Stone and one of the founding members of the Justice League. Reuters

Parkinson’s disease progression may be reversed

Certain drugs can help reverse the effects caused by Parkinson’s disease, a study on fruit flies

shows. Mutations in a gene called LRRK2 carry a well-established risk for Parkinson’s disease.

The substances called deacetylase inhibitors could fully restore movement problems observed in fruit flies carrying the LRRK2 mutation.

These drugs target the transport system and reverse the defects caused by the faulty LRRK2 within nerve cells. “Our study provides compel-ling evidence that there is a direct link between defective transport within nerve cells and move-ment problems caused by the LRRK2 Parkinson’s mutation in flies,” said lead researcher Kurt De Vos from the University of Sheffield in Britain.

“We could also show that these neuronal trans-port defects caused by the LRRK2 mutation are reversible,” added co-investigator Alex Whitworth.

By targeting the transport system with drugs, the researcher could not only prevent movement problems, but also fully restore movement abilities in fruit flies. The LRRK2 gene produces a protein that affects many processes in the cell.

It is known to bind to microtubules, the cells’ trans-port tracks. A defect in this transport system has been suggested to contribute to Parkinson’s disease.

The researchers investigated this link and found that LRRK2 mutations affect transport in nerve cells which lead to movement problems observed in the fruit fly (Drosophila).

“This research gives hope that for people with a particular mutation in their genes, it may one day be possible to intervene and stop the progression of Parkinson’s,” concluded Beckie Port, research communications officer at Parkinson’s UK.

The study appeared in the journal Nature Communications.

Retina protein could prevent blindness

A protein found in the retina plays an essential role in the function and survival of light-sens-

ing cells that are required for vision, researchers, including an Indian-origin scientist, have found.

The team from Institut De Recherche Clinique De Montreal (ICRM) in Canada studied a process called compartmentalisation, which establishes and maintains different compartments within a cell, each containing a specific set of proteins.

This process is crucial for neurons (nerve cells) to function properly. A good example of compart-mentalisation is observed in a specialised type of light-sensing neurons found in the retina, the pho-toreceptors, which are made up of different com-partments containing specific proteins essential for vision. “Our work identified a new mechanism that explains this process. More specifically, we found that a protein called ‘Numb’ functions like a traffic con-troller to direct molecules to the appropriate com-partments,” said lead researcher Michel Cayouette.

“We demonstrated that in the absence of ‘Numb’, photoreceptors are unable to send a molecule essential for vision to the correct com-partment, which causes the cells to progressively degenerate and ultimately die,” added Vasanth Ramamurthy, first author of the study.

This is important because the death of photore-ceptor cells is known to cause retinal degenerative diseases in humans that lead to blindness, he said.

“We believe our results could eventually have a sub-stantial impact on the development of treatments for retinal degenerative diseases,” Cayouette concluded.

The study appeared in the Journal of Neuroscience. Agencies

Families who express more warmth, group enjoyment and positive reinforcement at fam-ily meals have children with reduced risk of

obesity, according to a new study.“Past research has shown that having frequent

family meals is protective against youth obesity, but we don’t know why this is the case,” said lead author Jerica M Berge of the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.

“The current study was designed to answer the ‘why’ question,” Berge said.

The study involved 120 children, ages six to 12, from families in the Minneapolis/St Paul area who reported eating dinner as a family at least three times per week.

Family meals were video-recorded on iPads for an eight-day period.

They recorded types of foods, meal length, com-munication and interaction between parents and children and between siblings. Researchers also used parent and child surveys and interviews.

Three-quarters of the children were African American and half were overweight or obese.

Kids who were not overweight were more likely than overweight kids to have family meals last longer and to have a father or stepfather present. Overall, dinners lasted about 16 minutes, with an average of 18 minutes for healthy weight kids and 13.5 minutes for overweight kids.

“This finding may mean that when children have structure and more supervision at the meal they have more protection against overweight or obesity, (meaning) maybe a less chaotic meal environment and more chances to connect,” Berge said.

The kitchen was the most common location for dinners; 80 percent of healthy weight kids ate din-ner with their families in a kitchen, compared to 55 percent of overweight kids. More families of over-weight kids tended to eat in family rooms, offices or bedrooms.

Families with more warmth and nurturing, as rated by researchers observing the videos, were less likely to have overweight or obese children. Hostility, inconsistent discipline and permissive parental atti-tudes were associated with increased likelihood of childhood obesity.

“This may mean that in households where chil-dren are not overweight or obese there are more positive interactions at the family meal, which pro-vides a sense of security, regularity and predictability which may help children regulate their own daily

lives better, including self-regulating their eating behaviours,” Berge said.

Families who communicated more about food were less likely to have overweight or obese children, according to the results published in Pediatrics.

These findings only identify associations between meal habits and childhood obesity, and do not prove that mealtime dynamics cause obesity, Berge said, but there are some known healthy strategies parents can employ at the dinner table.

“It is important for families to try and promote a positive atmosphere during family meals,” she said. “For example, don’t use the family meal as a time to lecture children about their homework. Instead, take time to connect with each other such as asking each family member to talk about a ‘high’ or ‘low’ from their day to promote connectivity among fam-ily members.”

Another childhood feeding and obesity study, pub-lished in the same issue of Pediatrics, found that among same-gender twin pairs, mothers tend to be more restrictive when feeding the child with the higher body mass index (BMI), a measure of weight to height.

Researchers studied 64 pairs of twins ages four to seven, measuring their BMI, body fat percentage and waist circumference. Mothers reported their feeding styles toward each twin in a questionnaire, which assessed restricting food items, pressuring a child to eat and monitoring the child’s eating.

Observing twins helps to partially rule out the possibility that heavier children are genetically pre-disposed to have poorer eating self-regulation, or that they were shaped by their environment, since twins have the same genes and environment, said senior author Myles S. Faith from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

His results suggest that restrictive feeding may influence weight gain.

“First, foods that are withheld might become more desired or sought after – sort of like ‘forbidden fruit’,” Faith said in an email. “When children eventually do get access, they might chose these less healthy foods and overeat because they have that chance.”

“Second, restrictive feeding might disrupt chil-dren’s ‘satiety responsiveness’ – which is the ability to recognize when we’re full,” he said. “So, restrictive feeding may impede children learning this skill.”

Both new studies indicate that parental choices may help determine a child’s relationship with food and childhood weight gain.

The iPad event looked uneventful: after all, what’s exciting about speed-bumped iPads getting last year’s features (the TouchID fingerprint unlock system and slow-motion cameras) and a hefty downward shove on the price of last year’s?

Underneath, though, this was a “dog-whistle” event. “Dog-whistle politics” is the sort where a politician appeals to a particular part of the electoral base, using words and phrases that their audience will react to, but which leaves everyone else cold. (It’s often used of right-wing politicians: phrases about “jobs” tend to mean “immigration”, for example.)

Apple did something different: these are dog-whistle features. But the whole part of the presentation devoted to the iPad had dog-whistle moments. The iPad’s slow-motion feature was shown off with an athlete jumping into a sandpit — not, as Apple slo-mos have in the past used, a domestic scene such as a wet dog shaking itself. A professional photographer was shown talking about working with the iPad.

The iPad, goes the dog-whistle message, is for work, not play.

TouchID: down to businessThe TouchID addition is important for people who

use iPads in businesses, especially the giant “enter-prises” where thousands of devices might be deployed. When I mentioned on Twitter that TouchID looked useful on the new iPads, the responses came thick and fast from people who don’t want to have to type their long IT department-mandated passwords into a screen, but would rather unlock them with the touch of a finger.

“TouchID [is] very important in enterprise for mobile workforces, particularly in customer-service scenarios,” responded Tim Edwards of Dootrix, an enterprise soft-ware development consultancy. Long passphrases are the enemy of quick interaction with a customer, he explained: “Fumbling around with a strong passcode doesn’t cut it for a quick customer interaction, espe-cially in travel.”

Evernote links to TouchID, as can any custom app for enterprise – the software hooks (APIs) are available to any app that requires authentication. 1Password, which acts as a master vault for passwords for apps and websites, also integrates with it.

The sense of relief from iPad users in business was (to me) surprisingly palpable on Twitter after the announcement; in retrospect it’s understandable that pressing a finger looks far more desirable than typing a long, hard-to-remember code. “[My] work Exchange policy mandates a long password - will be brilliant for me,” remarked Richard Harnwell on Twitter.

That’s certainly going to be important for Apple. With iPad sales having fallen year-on-year for the past

nine months as the tablet market bifurcates, it needs to look to vertical markets and business for fresh growth where price isn’t so important.

Apple Pay: the quiet revolutionNFC (Near-field communication) has been available

in Android phones since early 2011, since when the installed base of Android phones has gone from around 50m worldwide to more than a billion, and the US user base from about 18m to over 90m.

In that time, Google Wallet, launched in May 2011, has had 20m downloads - though I’ve been told by sev-eral sources in the US financial services industry that only about one-tenth of those actually use their phones for NFC payments in stores; in other words, 2 million people, at best, making occasional use of their phones to pay for goods in store.

Google Wallet and NFC on Android phones has got nowhere, basically. It has struggled to sign up mer-chants or banks, and both carriers and merchants tried to launch their own competing NFC payment systems, Softcard and MCX, which have had little success either because they’re all at odds with each other.

Now, though, Apple is steamrollering in. Having already signed up a number of banks and merchants for its announcement on September 9, Tim Cook said that another 500 banks have come forward to get involved in Apple Pay, as well as a number of merchants (includ-ing Starbucks, which has had its own payment system going for some time).

“We believe ApplePay is going to change things pro-foundly,” Tim Cook said. The advantage that Apple has is that ApplePay will have a really big merchant ready to use it straight away: all of Apple’s stores, which number more than 250 in the US. Given that Apple has surely already sold at least 2m new iPhones in the US (and perhaps more like 5m), it’s highly likely that the value and volume of NFC transactions through Apple’s Stores in the US in the next two months will exceed that across the US in the previous ten months of this year.

Sounds hyperbolic? Yes, but that’s how Apple gets a sense for a market. When it launched the iTunes Music Store in April 2003, early expectations (even inside) were that it would sell a million songs in its first year: the Music Store was Mac-only, US-only, and most people weren’t on broadband. (And they were all on desktops or laptops.)

Instead, it passed that milestone in its first week; by July 2004 (having been released for Windows in October 2003) it had sold 100m.

One can argue that there aren’t many NFC-capable tills in the US, which is largely still stuck in the card-swiping dark ages; chip-and-pin, as used in the UK and the rest of Europe, isn’t yet mandatory.

But a series of terrible hacks which have given mil-lions of credit card details to hackers because companies

stored them following transactions means that the US banks have finally had enough. They are making chip-and-pin (also known as EMV) mandatory: by October 2015 any business that doesn’t have EMV implemented will have to bear the brunt of fraud, rather than being able to pass it to the banks, as they can now.

That means tills are being updated, and NFC pay-ment capability is an inexpensive “nice to have”. Apple executives have indicated to me that they think that their timing on this is just right - and in business, it’s often timing that matter more than just technology.

By linking the payments to authentication through TouchID, Apple is willing to bear the cost of any fraud - but at the lower rate of “card present” (ie, the real card was shown in the transaction) rather than “card not present” (such as a telephone purchase). Google Wallet, on the other hand, has to assume a “card not present” fee - and its interface is a lot less smooth than Apple Pay.

Even so, that so many more merchants and banks want to participate in Apple Pay means it will drive NFC adoption. That will have benefits for Android users too in the US and beyond. At the end of September it emerged that Apple has poached Mary Harris, the head of mobile at Visa Europe, to lead its ApplePay efforts in Europe. Expect to see that before you see Google Wallet extended beyond the US.

The new iPad is for work, not play

Swiftkey; Halftone 2Much of the hype about any Apple launch is

bound to surround the new hardware, and the introduction of iPhone 6 and giant-size 6 Plus was no different. However, it’s the rollout of iOS 8 that will affect most people. There’s no great revolution with this free update, but the way it allows third-party software to integrate with the built-in apps

is a big improvement. Swiftkey (iOS, free)has long been an Android favourite, but now arrives on Apple devices, allowing typing in multiple languages as it learns your style — and most importantly allows swipe-typing — so that you need never lift your finger from the screen.

The improvement to the camera is noticeable

especially in the Plus, and Apple has done a good job of improving on-the-fly editing, but the integra-tion of apps such as Litely (iOS, free), which pro-vides subtle and effective photo editing, is welcome. Halftone 2 (Juicy Bits, iOS, £1.49) allows you to turn photos into comic books with ease.

The ever-reliable Yahoo Weather(iOS, free) is allowed to sit front and centre. And that’s the great step forward – the tools you want made more acces-sible than ever. The Guardian

New York makes yogurt official state snack

Yogurt became New York’s official state snack recently, joining the likes of popcorn and salty boiled peanuts

among popular foods honored by US states.New York has become the nation’s top yogurt producer

amid the booming popularity of strained Greek-style yogurt, the office of Governor Andrew Cuomo said.

Cuomo signed a bill making it the official state snack.“Designating yogurt as the official state snack will con-

tinue to raise public awareness of the economic and health benefits of yogurt and the dairy industry,” the governor’s office said.

Only a handful of states have official snacks. South Carolina has boiled peanuts, Texas has tortilla chips and salsa, Illinois has popcorn and Utah has Jell-O.

New York state produced 741 million pounds (336 million kg) of yogurt last year, accounting for 16 percent of total US production, the governor’s statement said.

Two leading brands of the thick Greek-style yogurt, Ciobani and Fage, have large production plants in New York.

Dairy manufacturers in New York employed about 9,500 people with total wages of $513m in 2013, up from about 8,000 jobs and $401m in wages in 2010.

Remorseful robber waits for police after Washington state heist

A suspected robber with a guilty conscience walked out of a Washington state bank with stolen cash then waited

outside the building for police to arrest him, police said. The 64-year-old man walked into a Banner Bank

branch in Bellingham early and handed a teller a note

demanding cash, the Bellingham Police Department said in a statement.

The teller complied, and the man, identified as Richard Gorton, took the money and left, police said. But instead of fleeing the scene, he lingered near the bank building where he was discovered by officers. “He admitted to officers that he had committed this crime and indicated that he became remorseful right after he walked out of the bank,” police said, adding that Gorton told officers he had decided to wait for police instead of making a run with the cash.

The remorseful robber faces charges of first degree rob-bery and was being held in the Whatcom County Jail await-ing arraignment, police said. The amount of money stolen was not disclosed by police.

Australian returns home from holiday with spider in stomach

An Australian man had a spider removed from his stom-ach after it burrowed its way into his body and survived

for three days before being removed.Dylan Maxwell was on holidays on the Indonesian island

of Bali when the tiny creature burrowed through a small appendix scar and traveled up his torso, leaving a red scar-like trail from his navel to his chest. Lifting his shirt, Maxwell told an Australian television network “that’s where it actually burrowed underneath my skin”.

While still in Bali, Maxwell visited a local medical center and was prescribed an antihistamine for an insect bite.

“Well after running tests and putting things inside my stomach they finally found out it was a tropical spider that’s been living inside me for the last three days,” Maxwell posted on his Facebook page where he goes by the name of Dylan Thomas.

“Haven’t felt so violated in my life before! Just glad it’s all over”, he said. Agencies
