Dear Parents and Caregivers,

We have had such a busy term; it is hard to believe it is Week 8! It is wonderful to bring back kindness week again this year. This week our whole school is focussing on being kind and building a society that genuinely cares. We thank you for your participation

through the dinner time conversations.

What a fabulous day, our students did us proud. Special thank you to the P&C who organised and ran the canteen. A bigger thankyou to Ms Harrison who organised the day, eleven schools participated, and it had a wonderful community feel. It was great to

come together as a district after our COVID year last year.

You Can Do It

The You Can Do It program is a social and emotional learning program that helps students of all ages to better manage their emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships and make responsible decisions. Research demonstrates that social and emotional programs in schools can result in a 11% increase in student grades, 23% increase in social and emotional skills (making and keeping friends and resolving problems) and 9% improvement in attitudes to self and others. Our teachers are working together to develop high quality social and emotional learning programs relevant to our children, regularly meeting and planning. Displays in classrooms also remind students of how to

develop their social and emotional skills.

News from t he Kindergart en C lassrooms

KK and KW

This term (and year!) is flying by! Kindergarten are continuing to use Sound Waves daily to learn about and practise letter sounds. This is really helping our reading and writing to take off! In reading we are practising using strategies, such as ‘Stretchy Snake’, to sound out and blend to read words. We are also learning how to retell a story by referring to the characters and setting, and talking about what happened in the beginning, middle and end. Kindy write a recount every Monday to say what we did on the weekend. Our families have been supporting students' writing by sending pictures through ClassDojo of students doing fun things on the weekend like gardening, going to a

restaurant or park, visiting family or even staying home and playing with toys. These pictures support students to talk about what they did and helps them to get ready for

the writing process.

Our highlight of this term was our excursion to Sydney Opera House to watch the theatre performance ‘Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge’. Kindergarten caught the train from Padstow Station to Circular Quay and walked to the Botanic Gardens for lunch and a play. After that we went inside and watched the show. The set, music and acting were outstanding and students were engaged

throughout the performance.

News from t he Stage 1 C lassrooms

In the classroom, the students have been learning about what good mathematicians do to help them solve problems. Students have started to think like mathematicians by checking their answers, using different strategies, talking using mathematical language and explaining their answers. We have been seeing lots of exciting ‘light bulb’ moments happening in our students during their learning as they grow their mathematical minds. Our students have also been using the YCDI value of persistence while we learn. We have been discussing how important it is to make our brains feel like they’re getting a workout while we learn and we have learned what a ‘Sweaty Brain’ is. The students have been practicing this each day to reflect on how hard they have been working and are using this to challenge themselves in their learning. They have even created their own

learning goals to work towards.

On Thursday 3rd June, students were highly engaged in the incursion Sound Energy related to our science and creative and practical arts programs in term 2. They were

very enthusiastic throughout the 2 hours, investigating how sounds travel and how we hear sounds. Students used telephones to investigate how we communicate using sound. They observed how sound moves solid objects through vibrations. Students also made their own

guitars in small groups.

Students in Stage 1 thoroughly enjoyed the fun filled activities during Kindness Week. They discussed the importance of being kind and how to display random acts of kindness. Students shared what they were grateful for, different words that made them feel happy and how they can show their gratitude. They displayed acts of kindness from the classroom to the playground, complimented one another and praised each other’s efforts and achievements. It was a pleasure to see students caring, sharing and getting along, using their manners, being respectful and inclusive. Students also enjoyed crazy hair day, had some yummy pizza, had our parents in the

classroom and enthusiastically shared our learning.

News from t he Stage 2 C lassrooms

Stage 2 has been linking our maths knowledge and skills to our visual arts lessons. We have made various artworks this semester using knowledge of arrays, 3D shapes and patterns. We have used our knowledge of 3D shapes and have created some 3D name art. While doing this we explored self-expression in a multi-dimensional way. Last week we also participated in National Reconciliation Week. We learnt about the reason for reconciliation week and why it is important to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People. While learning about National Reconciliation Week, we were colouring for reconciliation and specifically focusing on the various elements in our artwork, including

boomerangs, stars, moon, planets and spirit souls.

In Maths lessons, Stage 2 have been learning about what makes a good mathematician. We have learnt that we can all be good mathematicians if we think like mathematicians. We have been practicing skills that help us to think like mathematicians. We know that good mathematicians make mistakes. We have been working together to show our work and explain our thinking when completing tricky problems. We have been showing that we are good mathematicians by talking lots about maths

using the correct vocabulary and looking for challenges.

Stage 2 have also been learning about how important it is to get a sweaty brain when we are learning. Just like our bodies sweat when it is exercising hard, our brains need to sweat sometimes in our learning to grow and be stronger. Challenging ourselves in our learning makes our brains sweat and grow! We created some artworks

to show how important it is to get a sweaty brain.

In Science, we have been learning about the uses of everyday materials such as wood, plastic, metal, glass and paper. We have been investigating the suitability of these materials and how they can change. Additionally we have been experimenting with the STEM share kits, in particular the Lego Wedo and the Blue Bots. Using coding, students have created many different projects like a dancing robot, helicopter, racing car and windmill. Working together, students have used their skills in collaboration, negotiating and problem solving to create successful projects whilst

having lots of fun.

Students have started to write very convincing persuasive arguments, most recently they have persuaded Miss Carr to get them a classroom pet! Their use of strong language and clear arguments has made a big difference to their writing and I am very proud of their effort! We have also been speaking about our YCDI keys to success; we have read a picture book about a little girl called Malala Yousafzai who was brave, confident and persistent! We were all very inspired and admired her confident young voice and how she used it to stand up for what she believes in! We worked on some colourful artwork to celebrate the power of just one little voice in making the

world a better place.

In science, we have been experimenting with the STEM share kits and creating dancing robots using coding. Students worked in teams to plan, design and build their own robots, as well as coding their robots using iPads to

make them move in different directions.

It has been an amazing term with all of our students. There is so much learning occurring! All of the students have been learning how they are already mathematicians. First we learnt about famous mathematicians and how they helped us. Then we explored how we all have the skills to be mathematicians. It was great to know everyone makes mistakes with maths and that famous mathematicians can take years to solve a problem. We are working on explaining our maths work to other students and use our

mistakes as a learning experience.

This helped us to see how important it is to use our brain and make it stronger. We learnt that because our brain is a muscle we need to give it a workout every day. Ms Dennis calls it ‘Sweaty Brains’. Everyone in our class has been working their brains by trying to challenge ourselves in maths. Learning what the math words mean and helping

our friends with their work.

A sweaty brain is one that is challenged by learning. In Maths we are using our sweaty brains to make sure that it is active and energetic. Like we do in You Can Do It, we must persist and make mistakes to improve and learn from

them.

A Persuasive Text...Is It Really?

5O have been writing persuasive texts about having therapy animals in the classroom and snack shed in the canteen. We have found that when writing a persuasive

text it is important to:

Ted - use emotive language

Kiana - use high modality words

Ali - use alliteration

Elias - can have a rhetorical question

Maddie - use persuasive devices like repetition

Jaira - use exaggeration

Kaiden - use similes and metaphors

Cross Country - Were you cross?

Eleven schools were welcomed by Padstow North for the Cross Country District on Tuesday 25 May; Padstow Park, Padstow Heights, Revesby South, Revesby, Bankstown South, Picnic Point, Milperra. We all participated in the District Cross Country. In fact, with our regular students 500 students were at our school. But there were no cross

students here.

Our carnival ran like clockwork. There wasn’t a cross word said. Our school had 48 students participating in the race. 3 out of 48 students made it into regionals. Congratulations to Ben (8th), Anthony (1st) and Desiree (5th) for making it

into regionals.

A big big thank you to the volunteers that helped to cook the sausage sizzles and provide a canteen. There were no

cross people with those sausage sangas.

Also a big thank you to Miss Harrsion and Mrs Britton for organising the whole event - they won’t be cross anymore!!!! The sport captains for helping Miss Harrison

and anyone else who needed them.

Salute To STEM!

Padstow North students have had the privilege of having STEM kits available for their learning. Stage 3 have been using Lego WeDo kits. We have learnt about coding to; make a rover move - forwards, backwards, faster and slower, use motion sensors, tilt sensors and to change

colours.

Netball

The Junior and Senior A netball teams have had a fantastic season. Whilst we didn’t make it through to semis we were always competitive and sat just outside the top 4. The girls have developed great skills and worked together as a team throughout the season. They have represented their school with pride and showed an abundance of sportsmanship and love for sport. I look forward to seeing their skills develop further next season. Thank you to all the girls for your hard work at training. I am very proud of all the girls, it has been a privilege to coach them this

I am so proud of both my Senior and Junior B netball teams this season. Both teams represented Padstow North with pride, and showed excellent sportsmanship. Well done to the Senior B team who made it to the semi finals. Unfortunately they were unsuccessful, however it was a very close match with a two point difference. Well done

Boys Touch Football

The Senior boys touch football team should be proud of how they represented Padstow North in the semi finals. They were up against Picnic Point Public School, a very tough team! Despite this they worked together, passed perfectly and encouraged one another to persist right until the very end of the game. I am very proud of their sportsmanship and improvement as a team. The Juniors are congratulated on their enthusiasm and willingness to get involved, I look forward to seeing what they have to offer next year! Newcombeball

Newcombe ball teams had their final game at the end of week 6. Both teams played fairly and enjoyed the game. Over the season communication, positioning and team encouragement has improved. All students should be proud of how they conducted themselves while representing the school. Thank you to all students for their commitment to turn up to training and games each week.

District Cross Country Carnival

On Tuesday 25 May we welcomed the East Hills District competitors to our school for the annual District Cross Country Carnival. We were so lucky to have the support of our wonderful P&C representatives on the day cooking the BBQ, serving the canteen and supporting our students. It was a successful day with three of our students moving onto the regional carnival on Wednesday 9th June. We

wish them all the best and good luck in their races.

A huge congratulations to Ben, Desiree and Anthony who are representing East Hills at the upcoming regional carnival. During Week 7, Desiree attended the State Basketball Championships, representing Sydney South West. Desiree’s team made it to the finals, and were placed second with a silver medal. Desiree has been selected to represent NSW in the State Basketball team, a huge achievement in our region. Well done Desiree, we

are very proud of you!

We wanted to say a very big thank you to all our super volunteers who helped at the district cross country and on the Bunnings BBQ including Ms Dennis, staff and teach-ers, and to all those families who came down to support

our school by buying a sausage sizzle. THANK YOU!

Pizza Day wrap up

Thank you to Dough Boss in Revesby for their very gener-ous donation of the pizzas for our Pizza Day during the week. The money raised will go towards our next donation to the school. We also wanted to thank all the families supporting the fundraiser, we sold 247 pizzas!! Finally, we wanted to acknowledge our lovely volunteers and the

teachers who stepped in to help on the day.

The uniform shop is open each fortnight from 8.30am to 8.55am on Tuesday mornings. The next open day is 15
