To assist with the selection of your Pacific Islands accommodation we have created our own rating system allowing you to compare each property. These are personal ratings offered by our people from their own experience and should therefore be used as a guide only. These ratings may alter throughout the year due to a change of circumstances. Norfolk Island ratings however are based on the official Australian AAA Star Rating Scheme, and therefore the rating descriptions below do not apply to the Norfolk Island section.

Standard rooms, clean and comfortable usually with basic furnishings and private en-suites. Typically most properties would include a restaurant and bar but have a limited range of other guest facilities and services.

Moderate accommodation with a reasonable range of room facilities and comfortable standard, usually with a wide range of recreational and leisure activities available for guest enjoyment.

Superior accommodation offering a high level of comfort in rooms with quality furnishings and fixtures.

Each of the four Pacific nations featured in this brochure have a strong identity, culture and history and each offers a very different holiday experience. So, which one should you pick? That depends on what you’re planning to do...

If you’re keen on shopping and dining, but also want plenty of time on the beach, New Caledonia is an obvious choice. This is a place where you can browse boutiques for Parisian luxuries one minute and swim in the world’s biggest blue lagoon the next. The mix of French and Melanesian cultures is part of the special fascination here and you’re encouraged to join in and enjoy it, whether it’s a Gallic game of boules, a traditional Melanesian bougna (similar to a hangi), or an unconventional cricket match – Kanak women are passionate about this very English sport!

Then again, if history is your thing, combined with a gentle lifestyle, lots of relaxation and less emphasis on sea and sand, you’ll love Norfolk Island. It’s a great place to recharge the batteries and breathe in clean island air tinged with the scent of the local pines. There’s excellent accommodation available, duty free shopping and great dining options. Be sure to put the World Heritage area high on your list of Norfolk must-dos: there’s nothing remotely like it in New Zealand and it gives a chilling insight into the days of convict transportation. Hiking, biking and golfing are popular on this island, and don’t get us wrong about sea and sand – there are some very beautiful beaches!

For pure Pacifica, plenty of beach time and a great sense of tradition, you can’t beat unhurried, unspoiled Tonga. Many of the ancient customs remain intact in these peaceful islands, and you will probably make lifelong friends sitting around a kava bowl during your stay here. A Tongan holiday gives a whole new perspective on life and values, and the scenery is magic, with azure lagoons, silver beaches and palm groves. So, if you feel like stepping back in time, Polynesia’s last kingdom is perfect for you – and to discover a paradise that’s almost lost, head out to the untouched Tongan archipelagos of Vava’u and Ha’apai.

Maybe you’re after something completely different, a chance to experience the Pacific’s wilder side? If so, take a long, hard look at Niue, the world’s smallest nation, on the world’s largest coral atoll. There’s just one island here, and it’s an extraordinary one, ringed by cliffs, underwater tunnels and mysterious sea caves. Don’t go expecting glitz, glamour and big sandy beaches – actually, there’s no beaches as such. Instead, go looking for unique outdoor challenges and adventures. There are plenty of these on offer, including hiking, caving, mountain biking, reef walking, swimming with dolphins and whale watching. There’ll be few other tourists, because there just isn’t the accommodation for them, so you certainly won’t need to worry about crowds. You’re going to love it! Nowhere on earth is quite like Niue.

So, while all four of our destinations offer Pacific sunshine and blue seas, that’s where their similarity ends. There’s only one other thing they have in common: warm-hearted, welcoming people, proud of their culture and always eager to share it with their guests.

An intoxicating blend of South Pacific idyll and French sophistication is waiting just a two-and-a-half hour flight from Auckland. New Caledonia is like nowhere else in the Pacific – and as soon as you set foot there, you’ll appreciate the source of its very special charm: Mediterranean meets mellow Melanesia. The capital, Noumea, occupies the southern tip of the main island, Grande Terre, with beautiful bays on both sides. It’s sophisticated yet casual and you won’t find anywhere else on earth quite so similar to the French Riviera. The atmosphere in this little city is pure Gallic, with boutiques, patisseries, cheese shops and restaurants lining quaint streets and squares. Our favourite things to see and doTJIBAOU CULTURAL CENTRE – Discover the unique architectural buildings just 10 minutes from the city centre. The bold, modern style, both elegant and restrained, have been designed from the inspiration of traditional Kanak architecture. View fantastic art and artefacts from all over the South Pacific.

AMEDEE LIGHTHOUSE – Take an excursion further afield to the Amedee Lighthouse located within a natural Marine Reserve and home to a large variety of coloured tropical fish. This trip is a must do for those who like snorkelling. Your excursion includes return catamaran transfers from Noumea, buffet lunch, cultural dancing and a glass bottom boat ride.

ANSE VATA BAY – This is the main area for sea activities. Also pleasant for a walk along the beach fringed by coconut trees. Numerous hotels, shops and restaurants and night clubs are also located at Anse Vata Bay.

DINE AT BAIE des CITRONS – Head to Baie des Citrons where you’ll find restaurants and bars jostling for space with indoor and outdoor seating and all manner of cuisine on offer. From fine French fare to seafood, burgers or pizzas, there’s something for everyone.

SHOP AT A LOCAL SUPERMARKET – Noumea’s supermarkets are a mecca for passionate foodies - so stock up on gooey (and affordable) French cheeses, foie gras and pate, and get your freshly baked baguettes, croissants or delicious pain au chocolat from the bakeries that are dotted everywhere.

VISIT PORT MOSELLE MARKET – Get down to Port Moselle Market which is open daily from 8am-11am (except Mondays). It’s where fisherman tie up and drop off their catches of fresh tuna. You can also get veges, fruit, olives and breads and have fun perusing the handcrafts, hats, sarongs and jewellery.

DUCK ISLAND – Also called Ile aux Canards - which sounds much more exotic! It’s a 10 minute water taxi ride from Anse Vata Beach . Take a picnic or buy your lunch at the restaurant there. Rent a sun lounger and snorkel gear - or take your own. Wind and kite surfers dot the waves and colourful fish are plentiful to keep your little ones amused for hours.

PLAY PETANQUE WITH THE LOCALS – Wander along Anse Vata Beach in the evening, where the locals gather to play petanque. They’ll probably ask you to join them, so be prepared to lob your best boule.

NOUMEA AQUARIUM – World famous for its fluorescent corals and numerous varieties of tropical sea life, the Aquarium is located between the two main beaches – Anse Vata and Baie des Citrons.

NoumeaThe Place des Cocotiers is a perfect place to begin an exploration of the Paris of the Pacific. While the ornate bandstand and cafés could be straight from France, towering flame trees and tropical produce at the market add an exotic South Seas touch. The temptations of boutiques offering fashion straight from Paris will keep shoppers engrossed but the beaches of Baie des Citrons and Anse Vata are also irresistible. Getting around is easy, especially if you have all of the hot spots covered on a city orientation tour. One of Noumea’s star attractions is the Tjibaou Cultural Centre, a masterpiece inspired by Kanak architecture. Evenings entice with a host of restaurants, bars and casinos. For a change of pace take a lagoon boat trip to the 140-year-old Amedee Lighthouse. The island’s underwater world waits beyond its beaches.

Right on the promenade of Anse Vata, this 300 room hotel complex is a great base to explore Noumea. There’s a vast range of amenities on offer, not least of which are the large swimming pool, tropical gardens and outdoor restaurant/bar.

With three properties under one umbrella, there are plenty of room types on offer, from comfortable standard to deluxe. The hotels are grouped around the pool and sun deck area and in proximity to numerous restaurants, bars, shops and cafés and a short distance from a water activities centre.

Anse Vata is just across the road from the hotel and it’s an easy 10 minute trip to central Noumea and other main attractions.

You’ll have plenty of space to spread out and enjoy your stay at this four-star property in the heart of Anse Vata – the rooms and suites are huge!

Perfectly positioned for beach or business, it overlooks the lagoon on one side, and the island’s picturesque racecourse on the other. But, for the best views of all, be sure to dine at the revolving rooftop restaurant; it’s the only one in Noumea and well worth a visit. There’s a less formal restaurant at ground level serving lunch and for a touch of indulgence you can take afternoon tea by the beach-style pool. A day spa provides holistic pampering and the rooms all have kitchen facilities which is great when you feel like a light meal or a quiet, private evening. There’s also a big range of business facilities.

For a day on the sands, take the very short stroll to Anse Vata and check out the water sports at Plages Loisirs.

The recently renovated Beaurivage is great value for money. It’s chic, contemporary and right on the promenade of the lovely Baie des Citrons – a top location, with excellent swimming across the road. The area is one of the most popular dining destinations for Noumean locals, and there’s good shopping here too, including some of Europe’s best known brands. Central Noumea is a short bus-ride away, and the hotel itself has a beach café.

All rooms here have free WiFi and are fully air-conditioned, with ample amenities. With the clear lagoon across the road you’ll have the biggest pool in the South Pacific to enjoy! Boats and windsurfers are not allowed close to this beach, so you’ll have a peaceful time in the water.

Fresh, modern and fabulous, Hilton Noumea La Promenade Residences will meet the needs of travellers wanting four-star comfort, a self-catering option, and the convenience of hotel service. It’s not often these things come perfectly together in one package, which is why this place has so many fans – plus its right on Anse Vata Bay. All apartments here have two things in common: oodles of space and a big balcony overlooking the lagoon. You can cook for yourself in your fully equipped kitchen, take advantage of the hotel’s room service, or dine at its relaxing restaurant.

Facilities include a pool, gym, women’s fitness centre, shopping arcade and park-like grounds. A great location, near the Anse Vata attractions and less than 5km from Noumea’s picturesque town centre.

With its bungalows and picture-postcard setting, this resort more than lives up to its name. Standing on the shores of a tiny, palm-covered island in a dream-like lagoon, it offers total relaxation. Here, the hardest thing you’ll have to do all day is decide when to reapply the sunblock, or when to take your next swim.

There are three types of accommodation, but for maximum romance choose a thatched, overwater bungalow. These spacious bungalows have balconies that face the setting sun, and a flight of steps leading straight into the blue waters of the lagoon. If you prefer to keep your feet on dry land, there are garden and beachside bungalows offering excellent amenities in a beautiful setting. Less than 30 minutes by boat from Noumea, Escapade really is a world apart.

Be introduced to the city and its surrounds and immerse yourself in French influence and island culture. Soak up the atmosphere at the colourful markets, a perfect spot for some shopping and wander along the Promenade in “La Place des Cocotiers”. Visit a local Creperie restaurant where you will get the chance to indulge in some delectable delights for lunch before finishing off a perfect day with a glass of wine in a French wine cellar.

Looking for a unique way to see the sights? Jump on a Segway and discover the tranquil lagoon and beaches of Noumea. Start your tour at Anse Vata, continuing on to Baie des Citron. Learn some history as you go as your guide explains each bay and in turn its story. For those that are capable you have the possibility of going all the way to Plaisance Port and Orphelinat Bay. There are plenty of opportunities to take pictures so don’t forget your camera to capture those wonderful scenic shots.

Ile des PinsTropical island fantasies meet reality on the Ile des Pines, a 20 minute flight from Noumea. Crystal clear lagoons lap white sand beaches, which in turn are fringed with the island’s unique combination of flora – palms and stately Araucaria pines. The island is only 18km by 14km so exploring is easy – rent a car, bike or scooter and discover your own piece of paradise. The Kunies, the local inhabitants of the island, will also sail you around this gorgeous place on one of their traditional pirogues or outrigger canoes. While the beaches are almost irresistible, Ile des Pins also has intriguing caves, the remains of a 19th century convict settlement at Ouro and even a church built by the prisoners. The diving is fantastic too so plan a stay of at least two or three days.

Our favourite things to see and do BOUGNA FEAST – Take part in a traditional Kanak feast. The Bougna often contains taro, yam, sweet potato and banana, and pieces of either chicken, fish, crab, prawns or lobster wrapped in banana leaves and cooked over hot stones.

BOAT TOURS – Options include a trip on a Melanesian sailing outrigger (pirogue), or a glass-bottom boat tour to view the reef’s marine life. Pirogues depart from the northern end of St Joseph’s Bay.

DIVING – There are good dive sites at Vallée des Gorgones offering a chance to see eagle rays, leopoard sharks and hard and soft corals. All diving is arranged through Kunie Scuba Centre.

ORO BAY – North of Vao, a 20 minute walk through the forest leads to two wonderful beaches and a natural swimming pool formed in the coral. This is an amazing spot for snorkelling. Pack a picnic and spend the day there – you won’t be disappointed!

QUEEN HORTENSE’S CAVE – The island’s most famous cave has numerous stalactites and stalagmites, and a little stream. The cave was said to be the hiding place of Queen Hortense before her abdication in 1883. It’s located east of the airport, near Vao. Please note that caves may only be visited with a guide and permission must be sought to visit tribal sites, and a small gift presented.

KANUMERA AND KUTO BAYS – With their beautiful powdery white beaches and araucaria pines, these bays are the main visitor spots. There is good swimming at Kuto and good snorkelling at Kanumera.

N’GA PEAK – An hour’s walk up the summit of N’ga Peak (262m) – the island’s highest point – affords superb views of the entire island. The path begins near Gite Kuberka.

CONVICT SETTLEMENT, OURO – Established as a convict settlement back in 1872 Ile des Pins became home to 3,000 political deportees from Paris. Be sure to check out the old ruins of the penal colony at Ouro in the west of the island, the history is fascinating.

Our favourite things to see and doLUENGONI BEACH, LIFOU – Enjoy this stretch of fine white sand bordering a stunning turquoise lagoon. This breathtaking spot is what the locals boast as being ‘New Caledonia’s most beautiful beach’ and well worth the visit. The sheltered bay is also a renowned turtle haunt.

CAVES ON MARÉ – Maré’s central plain is made up of numerous caves as well as natural swimming pools. One of the more well known is Trou de Bone which is a 40 metre deep limestone cave and is one of Maré’s most impressive sinkholes. The sheer sides drop to reveal a lush garden and a small waterhole.

MOULI BEACH, OUVÉA – Be sure to discover this amazing paradise – 25 km of unbroken white sand that runs right down the west side of Ouvéa and Mouli Islands.

SNORKELLING – Lifou is home to many sheltered bays teeming with colourful tropical fish. One popular and easy to reach spot is Baie de Jinek - with its clear waters it is a favourite among snorkellers. A local fee may be charged upon arrival to swim and snorkel at the bay and it is a marine protected area so the number of people permitted is limited. Be sure to get in quick!

LE SAUT DU GERRIER, MARÉ – Or ‘Warriors Leap’ is a gap in the cliffs 5 metres wide and 30 metres above the pounding surf. Legend has it that local warrior Here Hnor, when cornered by an enemy, leapt across the abyss to his escape.

TROU BLEU D’HANAWA, OUVÉA – This deep pool is sunk in coral rock and connected to the sea underground. You can see fish and turtles in the water here and you can jump in yourself, but beware – the only way out is to pull yourself up on the pool’s steep sides with the help of a rope.

LA ROCHE, MARÉ – This little village is well known for its lovely Catholic church built in 1866. The church is situated at the base of a 90 metre high limestone cliff. A path to the north of the church leads up the cliff for stunning views over the village and sea.

Experience NiueYou’ll never feel like just another tourist on Niue, the island nation a three hour flight from Auckland. That’s because, with just under 130 guest rooms, there are often more whales visiting in season than human visitors! Niue is one of the world’s largest raised coral atolls and is home to 1500 hospitable residents. There’s no such word as rush-hour on Niue, it’s one of the world’s safest destinations and you don’t need foreign exchange – Niue uses the Kiwi dollar. Our favourite things to see and doWALK, EXPLORE, BIKE – There are dozens of well-maintained tracks around the Island. From virgin rainforest and dramatic caves to rugged coastlines, spectacular views and swimming coves, the tracks range from 5 minutes to 5 hours.

FISHING HEAVEN – Fishing in Niue is legendary. Very deep water is accessed almost immediately from launching so you’ll spend most of your time fishing, not travelling.

ONCE IN A LIFETIME EXPERIENCES – If you plan your arrival to Niue with that of the humpback whales (July to September) you can experience something that very few can say they have done. Niue is one of only three places in the world where you can swim with whales and for those not so keen on the swim, these gentle giants can be viewed from the land often only 50 metres from shore.

DIVING – Visibility (a diver’s favourite word) can be up to 80 metres. This clarity is ranked amongst the very best in the world and, with the warm water, makes for an exceptional dive experience!

Avatele Village Tour

Niue’s legendary among fishermen and is one of the best kept fishing possie secrets left in the world. Its distance from any other major land-mass, the wide range of in-shore fish and clear waters combine to attract the ‘big ones’ that fishermen dream of. Big fish like wahoo, tuna and marlin are often caught and the deep waters hide all sorts of surprises. Jigging, casting and trolling are on offer on Toamana’s 5m alloy boat and as trolling is the preferred method of fishing, two anglers is ideal. Possibly the best time to fish is June to Sept – Enjoy!

The uga or coconut crab is said to be the largest hermit crab in the world. While it spends all its adult life on land, it must return to the sea to release its eggs. The tour provides an opportunity to see and capture the uga in its natural habitat. The tour is in two parts – the first is to lay the bait during daylight hours. The second part takes place at night when the crab comes out to feed on the bait. Time and weather permitting, a paddle in a Niuean outrigger canoe can be arranged. Niue’s outriggers are some of the finest in Polynesia

The village of Avatele on the southern coast was one of the early trading stations when sailing ships plied the oceans on trade winds from the east. Its sandy cove was an attractive landing place for sailing ships. It could be said that the history of Niue is encapsulated in this one village – from a trading station, to early missionaries and to the Island’s first elected Premier. Join village elder and former Cabinet Minister Kuso Pavihi for a guided tour of his village. The tour takes place in the cool of the late afternoon.

The Pacific’s last kingdom is a paradise for seekers of pure peace. Its beautiful islands, divided into four groups, are scattered like pearls across 700,000 square kilometres of ocean. There is no shortage of deserted beaches and pristine anchorages here, and the swimming, snorkelling and diving are exceptional.

The main island, Tongatapu, is home to the capital, Nuku’alofa, and to most of the kingdom’s resorts. Many of these are family-owned and personal, because Tonga likes to welcome its visitors in low-key style – this is a place for simpler living and genuine encounters with the local people. Tongans know that what they can offer visitors doesn’t need dressing up. It’s already perfect!

If possible, do try to see more during your stay – head out to the scenic archipelagos of Vava’u and Ha’apai. Tonga’s tropical waters are renowned for their abundant marine life, including large schools of humpback whales which breed around Vava’u in winter. If you want to see these magnificent creatures, be sure to book your visit for some time between July and October. It’s even possible to swim with them: a truly unforgettable experience. Vava’u is also a sailor’s dream destination, with beautiful natural harbours and sheltered coves. The best known of these is the deep-water Port of Refuge, where you’ll find Tonga’s most picturesque town, tiny Neiafu. And of course, the opportunities for relaxation – right throughout Vava’u – are endless.

Even more remote and completely unspoiled is the Ha’apai group, with its coral atolls, glistening lagoons, pure white beaches and just a handful of inhabited islands. The way of life here really is timeless, and while it can’t offer any luxury resorts, Ha’apai is ideal for adventure and brilliant for kayaking – paddle up to a near-deserted shore, stay at beachside fale and tuck into a traditional feast with the friendly islanders!

Our favourite things to see and doBLOWHOLES – Visit the Blowholes along the rocky terraced coastline of Houma. Here you will find the largest spouts of sea water being thrown almost 30 metres into the air. Best viewed at high tide. This is a never-ending impressive display of the power of the sea. Buses to Houma from Nuku’alofa take about 30 minutes.

OHOLEI BEACH & HINA CAVES – 40 minutes from Nuku’alofa. ‘Oholei’ is popular for its great traditional Tongan buffet style dinner and floorshow inside ‘Hina Cave’. This happens Wednesdays and Fridays and is $30 per person for dinner and show. It is advisable to call to make reservations and transport from Nuku’alofa to Oholei can be arranged at a cost of $12 per person return.

CHURCH SERVICE – A Sunday visit to church is a ‘must do’ experience. All churches welcome visitors, however a major portion of the service is conducted in Tongan. If there are a number of Europeans present, the pastor may translate some of the service into English. Well worth a visit to hear the lovely pure singing. St Joseph’s Cathedral Church is located in central Neiafu and is a beautiful landmark to visit.

DAY TRIP TO AN ISLAND RESORT – During your stay in Tongatapu why not take a day cruise out to one of the two tropical resorts on offer: Fafa Island Resort or Royal Sunset Resort. Cruise to one of these islands and spend your day swimming and snorkelling in the crystal clear waters, sunbathing or simply relaxing under the shade of a coconut tree enjoying the atmosphere. True Island Style!

VENTURE OUT TO THE WESTERN BEACHES – If you are wanting to head to some beautiful white sand beaches with great snorkelling in pristine warm water then make sure you head out to one of the Western beaches for the day. Pack a picnic and laze the day away.

HA’AMONGA TRILITHON – This is one of the most prominent sites on Tongatapu. The Ha’amonga’ a Maui is located on the eastern tip of Tongatapu Island near the villages of Niutoua and Afa. This is the area where the eleventh Tongan King Tu’i Tonga Tu’itatui had his seat of power. It is believed that Tu’i Tu’itatui built the giant stone arch structure in 1200 A.D and it is estimated to weigh 80 tons. The Ha’amonga has been scientifically interpreted as an early style sundial clock that recorded different seasonal changes.

ANAHULU ANCIENT TONGA CULTURAL CENTRE – Head to the Anahulu Cultural Centre for a great day out that the whole family can enjoy. Get insights into the Tongan culture, traditions and customs. You’ll have the opportunity to watch demonstrations of tapa cloth making, mat weaving and view various exhibits on display at the centre while also enjoying the local songs and dance.

TongatapuNuku’alofa, Tonga’s capital, will be almost certainly your first taste of the kingdom. With about a third of all Tonga’s population living here, Nuku’alofa can be a surprisingly bustling place but its size also means there’s a great array of restaurants, nightclubs and dynamic cultural shows. There’s plenty to see too, such as the Talamahu Markets with its mounds of fresh produce and selection of handcrafts, including wood carving and jewellery. Although the Royal Palace is not open to visitors, you can admire this white-timber 19th century building from the waterfront. Try to time your visit to town to include a Sunday. Tongans are ardent churchgoers and their singing is legendary. Everyone’s welcome but make sure to pack your Sunday best.

Become acquainted with the fascinating Tongan culture and tradition on this half day tour. The main highlight is the stop at the Tongan National Centre where a variety of interesting exhibits provide an insight into the local culture. The fascinating myth of the coconuts origin will be revealed before observing the traditional methods of obtaining coconut milk. This tour provides an informative exploration of the islands Eastern regions. First stop is the Royal Palace, home of his late Majesty, King Taufa’ahau Tupou IV. Next, visit the Royal Tombs, where King George Tupou 1 and the rest of the late members of the Tongan Royal Family are at rest. See the place where Captain Cook landed in April 1777, and visit the ancient Ha’amonga Trilithon, a giant stone arch built around 1200AD - a photo opportunity not to be missed. The Anahulu Cave, an underground natural swimming pool with stalactites and stalagmites provides another highlight.

Experience the unique places of Tonga through a scenic drive. There’ll be a brief photo stop at the two-headed coconut tree (really amazing and one of a kind) before heading out along Tongatapu’s southern coastline to see the majestic blowholes at the village of Houma and flying foxes in the village of Kolovai – the home to hundreds of fruit bats. These creatures - harmless and seemingly lifeless - hang eerily from rows of ironwood pines along the main village road and are considered sacred and a delicacy to be consumed only by members of the Royal Family. Ha’apai & Vava’uSerene, spectacular and unspoiled, these island groups are less often visited, but the rewards for those who go there are great. If you’re in search of empty white sands and brilliant blue waters, Vava’u is your perfect choice. This tropical archipelago has one large island and a host of smaller ones, all with shimmering lagoons, hidden coves and superb diving sites. Neiafu, the main centre, lies on the shores of the Port of Refuge, a magnificent deep-water harbour. It’s the prettiest town in Tonga, and has a Saturday market, plus shops, cafes, bars and restaurants. Ha’apai, on the other hand, has no towns at all. It’s a faraway world of atolls, lagoons and white sand – an untouched slice of pure Polynesia, where most islands are tiny and uninhabited. The main centre is the friendly village of Pangai on Lifuka, with a lone bank and a few small stores. Ha’apai is way off the beaten track, and if you’re looking for somewhere untouched by time, you’ll love it here. Whale watching, swimming with whales and kite-surfing are on offer and there’s history too: it was in these islands that the Bounty Mutiny took place.

Our favourite things to see and doEXPLORE UNINHABITED ISLANDS & THE COASTLINE – A great way to explore the natural attractions that the beautiful island groups of Vava’u and Ha’apai have to offer is to climb onboard a kayak & start paddling. Along the way plan for a picnic lunch on a deserted island.

BIKE INTO THE LOCAL VILLAGE – It’s a 10 minute bike ride into the village from Sandy Beach Resort. Bikes can be hired for in-house guests and the ride is flat and easy. This is a great way to see the sights and explore the local area.

WHALE WATCHING – From July to October you can wonder at the magnificent humpback whales which migrate from Antarctica each year. Experts on tracking these wonderful mammals are the Whale Discoveries crew onboard their vessel, Tropic Bird.

MARKETS – Located in the centre of Neiafu, these run every day. The market is at its best and busiest on Saturday mornings. Great for handicrafts including hats, baskets, fans (essential if you’re planning a visit to church), grass skirts and outfits for children, with a bit of bargaining to be had. There is also an abundance of fresh locally grown fruit and vegetables.

Diving in Tonga, and particularly Ha’apai, is known for superb coral reefs, diverse topography and a big variety of fish life. Friendly Islands Kayak CompanyThe lush tropical islands of Vava’u and Ha’apai are home to Friendly Islands Kayak Company. Whilst the islands are separated by reefs or open water, they are not great paddling distances apart so there’s plenty of time to kayak the warm waters, snorkel amidst colourful coral and inside legendary marine caves, and observe the traditional way of life of the Tongan people. Your most difficult choice will be deciding on which kayak tour to do. Vava’u’s hilly terrain is perhaps more interesting and scenic but if it’s white sand beaches you’re after, there’s no shortage of these in Ha’apai. Snorkelling’s superb in both island groups, but soft corals and sizeable fish are more abundant in Ha’apai waters. On the other hand, Vava’u’s relatively sheltered waters are conducive to more reliable whale sightings between July and October.

CONSUMER GUARANTEES ACTThe guarantees under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 will apply to services supplied by us except where they are acquired, or held out as being acquired for business purposes.

1. OUR SERVICES AND OBLIGATIONS

1.1 House of Travel Ltd ('we' or 'us' as the case may be) supply services consisting of arranging and co-ordinating travel facilities and services, and making bookings and issuing vouchers to be redeemed by suppliers of travel, entertainment, and accommodation facilities or services ('Suppliers'). House of Travel Ltd is part of the House of Travel group.

1.2 We undertake to perform these services with reasonable care and skill. We will not be liable for any loss or damage which results from the act, default or omission of any person other than ourselves, our employees or agents, or any cause independent of human control. This includes (but is not limited to), loss or damage which arises directly or indirectly from any act of God, weather disruptions, dangers incidental to the sea, fire, breakdown in machinery or equipment, acts of Governments or other authorities de jure or de facto, wars whether declared or not, hostilities, civil disturbances, strikes, riots, deaths, pilferage, epidemics, quarantines or medical or customs regulations.

1.3 We are not able to exercise control over services we do not supply directly, therefore we will not be responsible for any loss or damage arising from:

- Any booking made directly with a service Supplier by your travel agent, or

- Any services which are not directly provided by us and which are additional to those recorded in clause 1.1 above.

1.4 We will endeavour to provide the most suitable travel arrangements to meet the particular requirements you make known to us. However, travel is an individual experience, and your preferences and opinions may vary from our own. For this reason, we cannot take responsibility for your individual satisfaction.

2. SUPPLY OF TRAVEL, ENTERTAINMENT AND ACCOMMODATION SERVICES AND FACILITIES

2.1 When we make bookings with Suppliers, we are acting as a booking agent for such Supplier.

2.2 All travel, entertainment, and accommodation facilities or services are supplied directly to you by the Suppliers. We have no control over the facilities or services themselves, or the manner in which they are provided by the Suppliers. Therefore you should be aware of the following conditions:

- We will not be liable for any loss or damage of any kind which may arise from your use or consumption of, or inability to use or consume those facilities or services.

- The provision of those facilities or services is subject to the terms and conditions of your contract with each Supplier.

- Where for any reason, a Supplier is unable to provide particular facilities or services, then that Supplier may be entitled, under its contract with you, to substitute those services or facilities with comparable or equivalent facilities or services without incurring any liability to you. You should check your contract with each Supplier.

- All facilities or services described by us are subject to availability from the Supplier.

- We will not be liable or responsible for any loss or damage relating to your baggage, personal possessions, health or welfare, or delays or travel disruptions unless these arise directly from the service we provide to you.

3. BUSINESS PURPOSES

You agree that where our services are acquired for business purposes, or where you hold yourself out as acquiring our services for business purposes, the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 will not apply to any supply of goods or services made under these conditions, and we will not be liable or responsible for any loss or damage of any kind to you, including any consequential loss or damage however it may be caused.

4. INFORMATION IN THIS BROCHURE

4.1 While we attempt to ensure that the contents of this brochure are correct, accurate, and up to date at the time of printing, the contents of this brochure are drawn from information supplied to us by Suppliers. We do not have, and cannot be reasonably expected to have, personal knowledge about all of the facilities or services provided by each Supplier.

4.2 Facilities or services may change after the date of printing. We endeavour to keep travel agents informed of any changes to information in

this brochure which are brought to our attention. Prior to completing your booking, you should ask your travel agent whether they are aware of any changes to the published information. You should also make sure that if your travel agent is advised of changes which occur after booking, your travel agent is able to contact you.

4.3 Maps and Photographs: Maps are shown for general information and may not necessarily reflect actual routings, locations or services provided. Photographs may show places in the geographic area which are not included in your booking. Hotel room photographs may not be the actual room occupied.

4.5 Room Bedding: Prices in this brochure are based on existing bedding in the room. Requests for specific bedding arrangements must be made at the time of booking but can not be guaranteed. For example, twin share may consist of single beds or a shared double bed.

4.6 Rental Cars: We cannot guarantee to provide a particular model or colour within the car category. Availability of car categories is subject to confirmation at the time of booking. We reserve the right to substitute different models. If a vehicle is returned prior to the end of the reserved rental period or if the vehicle is picked up later than the reserved date, NO REFUND will be made for unused rental days

5. PRICES

5.1 The price indicator is provided as a guide only. It is based on low season, per adult share twin pricing unless otherwise specified and is correct at the time of printing. The actual price may differ to that indicated due to currency fluctuations, special events or peak periods. Price indicators for hotels are per adult per night for share twin in a lead-in room. Price indicators for tours are based on per adult for low season travel. Price indicators for cruises are per adult for the complete cruise based on the lead-in cabin category on a low season sailing. Per person pricing is based in New Zealand dollars.

5.2 We will guarantee the price of the portion of the booking as processed by us, against currency fluctuation for a period of seven (7) days from the time of confirmation of the booking; note: special conditions apply for cruise bookings. It is the responsibility of your travel agent to advise you of the date of confirmation. If your booking remains unpaid after the seven (7) day guarantee period it will be subject to currency fluctuation, up to the time full payment is received by us.

5.3 Events beyond our control, such as changes to the prices of aviation fuel or changes to the cost of services or facilities may result in the prices charged to you being different from those shown in the brochure. You should check all prices with your travel agent before making reservations, and before ticketing.

5.4 Prices may also be liable to variation between the time of booking and the date of departure due to events beyond our control. Due to unforeseen events we reserve the right to vary the price up to the time of your departure.

6. HOUSE OF TRAVEL ACCOMMODATION RATINGS

To assist you with the selection of your accommodation, we have created our own rating system allowing you to compare each property. Please note that these gradings are to be used as a guide only and may alter throughout the year due to a change of circumstances. Please check with your House of Travel consultant to ensure you get the property that best suits your needs.

7. PAYMENT

7.1 A non-refundable deposit will be required by your travel agent and must be paid at the time of booking. This is in addition to any deposits imposed by Suppliers.

7.2 A communication charge may be made for bookings requested less than 72 hours prior to departure.

7.3 Final payment must be made in full before we can release travel documents (including tickets).

8. CANCELLATION

8.1 If you wish to cancel your booking for any reason, you must advise us in writing through your travel agent as soon as possible.

8.2 If you cancel your booking or any part of your booking, we will impose a cancellation fee in respect of each person travelling under that booking. You must also pay all cancellation fees imposed by Suppliers and

your travel agent. These cancellation fees are required to offset booking, communication, and administrative charges which have already been incurred by us, Suppliers and your travel agent. Cancellation fees imposed by Suppliers and travel agents are beyond our control and you should check with your travel agent regarding what cancellation fees may be applicable.

8.3 We strongly recommend that you insure yourself fully against cancellation due to unforeseen circumstances. See Section 10.

9. RESERVATION AMENDMENTS

We are happy to incorporate any reasonable amendments you request. An amendment constitutes a change to an existing booking and will attract a $25 fee per amendment prior to final payment and the issuing of the travel documents, and a $50 fee per amendment after travel documents have been issued. These fees are to cover administration and communication costs. You may also be required to pay any Supplier imposed fees.

10. INSURANCE

We strongly recommend that you insure yourself fully against cancellation, loss of luggage and personal property, and medical expenses. Your travel agent will be able to provide you with further information.

11. ITEMS NOT COVERED

Unless otherwise specified, the cost of airfares, meals, drinks, laundry, insurance, sightseeing, transfers, local taxes, airport departure taxes, Airline imposed insurance levies, passenger service charges and Passport or Visa application fees are not included.

12. VISAS/PASSPORTS

For all holidays in this brochure you will require a valid passport. You are responsible for arranging your own passport, visa and health requirements including inoculation. You should check with your travel agent who will be able to provide you with the necessary information.

13. NON-USE OF SERVICES OR FACILITIES

If, of your own choice, you decide not to use part or parts of the arranged services or facilities, you will not be entitled to a refund from us (provided we have carried out our service with reasonable skill and care and to your requirements) and you may not be entitled to a refund from any Supplier.

14. HEALTH OR DISABILITY

Some Suppliers may reserve the right to refuse to carry or accommodate people who because of a health condition or disability may require services or facilities to be provided in a special manner. You should check this with your travel agent.

15. SERVICE SATISFACTION

During your holiday, if you encounter any situation where the service supplied to you does not meet your satisfaction, please take the matter up with the Supplier immediately. Your contract for each service is with the Supplier. If this is not possible immediately, or if you are still dissatisfied, please contact your travel agent. Both we and your travel agent will endeavour to investigate on your behalf and to negotiate with the Supplier to resolve the matter as soon as possible, so that you continue to enjoy your journey.

16. LEGAL CLAIMS

Any claims or legal action in connection with the provision of our services to you will be governed by the laws of New Zealand. Any claim or legal action against the Suppliers is likely to be subject to the terms of your contract with them, and may be governed by the laws of other countries.
