Photo DesignDescription:A full bleed poster created to demonstrate my Photoshop skills, and using my own original image.

Date:10.17.15

Course/Instructor: COMM 130 Section 4Ben Pingel

Program(s)/Tools: Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:Learn basic photography skills. Choose a color scheme, take a photo to match those colors, then incorporate the colors into the layout. Use a digital camera to take a quality image, then download it. Adjust image levels, saturation, color balance, sharpen tool on separate layers for NDE (non-destructive editing.) Size and crop the image, then place on an 8.5×11 page layout. Use layers to design text, and repeating graphic elements in Photoshop. Print with full-bleed margins. Trim only 1/8”(0.125) from all four sides.

Process: Before starting this project, I made some decided to make some sketches. I then dressed up my roommate with comic book themed makeup. I then edited my photo in Photoshop, and added shapes around the main image. I then added drop shadows to the shapes, and added a comic book themed quote as well.

Event AdDescription:A color full-bleed event ad to promote a charity fundraiser with a photo from a magazine uploaded through a scanner, and created using only Microsoft Word.Date:10.10.15

Course/Instructor: COMM 130 Section 4Ben Pingel

Program(s)/Tools: Microsoft Word, HP scanner

Objectives:Comprehend image sizing (how pixels and inches work together). Find, scan and import a high-quality image. Create a full-bleed design. Choose a color scheme and typeface(s) that work for your message and audience. Learn to use only Word design features without using any Adobe programs, including Photoshop.

Process: Before I started this event ad, I sketched my ad. I then looked through a magazine in order to see which pictures could be used for potential ads. The image background had already had the blue, so decided to go from there and work around the image. After receiving critique on my flyer, I made the changes needed for a better flyer. I used an HP scanner and Microsoft word to complete this project.

LogosDescription:A logo created in Adobe Illustrator for the business Smash Cakes

Date:10.31.15

Course/Instructor: COMM 130 Section 4Ben Pingel

Program(s)/Tools: Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:Create three completely different, original logos to fit a company or personal image that will appeal to the audience. Do not imitate existing logos or use previous designs.Market research: gather opinions from at least ten people about which logo appeals most to them. Use only the Illustrator tools to create and draw your logos. (No Illustrator pre-fabricated flares, symbols, etc.. No photos or live-tracing. You may use an image or drawing as a guide to trace it with the pen/pencil, but delete the image before submitting.) Refine one logo with variations for color

Process: Before starting, I asked my roommate about her business and created sketches. Once I created sketches, I went into adobe illustrator, and started to create the logo. I looked online for inspiration from other cake and cupcake businesses. I designed three different logos before I decided on one. Once I decided on one, I refined it, creating the final logo.

Course/Instructor: COMM 130 Section 4Ben Pingel

Program(s)/Tools: Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:Use the basic tools in Illustrator & InDesign. Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image. Do not imitate existing logos or use previous designs. Don’t use photos or live trace. Use the new logo to design consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead. Photos are okay on business card and letterhead as additional design elements. Include contact information: name, address, phone, website, and email on each piece. Use periods, bullets, or spaces in phone number; no parentheses/ hyphens.

Process: Before starting this assignment, I created sketches of what I wanted in the logo. Once I created sketches, I used adobe illustrator to create my letterhead, When I finished my draft, I got it critiqued. I needed to refine my logo. I then went into illustrator and removed any unnecessary parts of my logo, and went for a more simple look.

MontageDescription: Full bleed montage poster that demonstrates good blending and typography skills with a message that invites the spirit.

Date:10.25.15

Course/Instructor: COMM 130 Section 4Ben Pingel

Program(s)/Tools: Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:Use the FOCUS design process with strong focal point and flow. Unify a layout with a consistent theme and dominant spiritual message. Learn to blend two or more images together gradually, using masks. Demonstrate more advanced Photoshop skills for layout with multiple elements. Use a mask to apply a filter to one part of the image. Apply typography principles (titles, quotes, events or scriptures…your choice)Format type: Legibility; Small copy & Title with varying text size. Theme word(s). Select good quality images.

Process: For this project, I thought a lot about the message I wanted before I started. I figured that if I knew what message I wanted, it would be easier to plan my project, I then sketched my plan. After, I searched images that would go well with my message. I added a moon, blended Jesus into the moon, and added a silhoutte of a girl. Lastly, I added my text, and added multiple layers to make it easier to read. I added an outer glow, and drop shadows to all text layers.

Web PageDescription: A website created to show my HTML and CSS skills, and to explain the design process of my logo.

Date:11.22.15

Course/Instructor: COMM 130 Section 4Ben Pingel

Program(s)/Tools: TextWrangler

Objectives:Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page so the long side is 300 – 500 pixels. Write content to describe the process of creating your logo and how it appeals to a target audience. (Minimum of 200 words. Include rationale for colors, appeal to target audience, design skills, etc,) Acquire a working knowledge of HTML. (Include all required tags – Doctype (provided), html, head, title, meta charset (provided), body, h1, h2, p, ol or ul (with li tags), img, br, and a link to blog) Acquire a working knowledge of CSS. (Customize the provided CSS provided to format the HTML to complement the logo design. Change at least the following: The h1 text color & h1 background color, font colors for the paragraphs & list items, the background color, font families and add at least one css comment.) Identify hex colors to match logo, using Photoshop color picker. Open the HTML page in a web browser and capture a quality screen shot with .5 inch margins for printing.

Process: Before creating my website, it was important that I sketched it out first. Once I created my sketches, I opened up TextWrangler, and opened demo.css I then connected it to my html. From there I added my logo, and my text. After getting it critiqued, I changed my background to a space theme. Because the logo’s text was too dark against the space background I added white around the edges of the text.

BrochureDescription: A trifold brochure made in order to advertise a business.

Date:12.5.15

Course/Instructor: COMM 130 Section 4Ben Pingel

Program(s)/Tools: Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign

Objectives:Set up and align a two-sided, folded document. Create an original, new logo and use it in a brochure. Incorporate quality images. Incorporate at least four quality images, not including the logo. One should be clipped in Photoshop and text-wrapped in InDesign so the text follows the cutout shape of the image. Write at least 250 words of original copy in at least three paragraphs, headers, and subheaders. Trim for a full bleed and print in duplex (two-sided) color.

Process: Before starting, I made sketches then I went into illustrator and created a logo for the business. In order to create the polka dot background, I created the polka dots in illustrator, and then placed it into Indesign. I created the pink banner in Indesign by using the anchor tool. To get the blue background, I added a blue rectangle and stretched it out across the page. In order to create the cut out of the cat, I went into illustrator and created a cat outline, then with the inside image, I put the cat image inside of the outline and masked the image in illustrator.
