at Oxford International College we offera highly individual approach toeducation for students seeking analternative to the traditional methods ofschooling. teaching is based on thetutorial system employed by Oxford andCambridge Universities, with tuitiontaking place on a one-to-one basis, or inmini-groups (maximum 4) combinedwith individual tuition. this allows ourtutors to gear lessons to the particularneeds of each individual student.

any students have theireducational needs met byconventional schooling,

involving classes of up to 20 pupils ormore. However, a significant andgrowing number are unable to fulfilltheir academic potential in this way. atOxford International College we offer ahighly personal approach to learning, which focuses on the individual needs ofeach student.

Many of our students have under-performed at school and transfer to us tocomplete or retake their a-levels beforeprogressing to university. Others areaiming to attend one of Britain’s topuniversities, including Oxford andCambridge, and come to us for theadditional intellectual challenge thattheir schools are unable to provide.

Our unique tuition model allows thepace of teaching to be geared exactly tothe student’s needs. teaching either justone-to-one, or a combination of mini-groups and one-to-one, promotes greaterparticipation by students, who areencouraged to venture answers and ideaswhich they might not have had theconfidence to voice in a conventionalclassroom setting. Confidence isessential for learning, and the tutorialsare often highly interactive, withstudents required to present or explainideas back to their tutors.

Our teaching methods are ideal forinternational students who may arrive inthe UK with a diverse range of languageand educational backgrounds. It istherefore extremely difficult, and rarelyeffective, to meet their individual needsin conventional classrooms or largegroups. Many of our internationalstudents have transferred to OxfordInternational College from otherinstitutions where they have beenunsuccessfully taught in groups withBritish and other foreign nationals.

M excellent integration between British andinternational students is achievedthrough social activities and in the dailylife of the College.

“I just wanted to let you knowthat I have been accepted formedicine at the University ofStellenbosch in South Africa. Asyou can imagine I am over themoon about this and I justwanted to thank you, my tutorsand everyone at OIC who helpedme to achieve this, I couldn't havedone it without your support andassistance and I will be forevergrateful for this. ”

ndividual and mini-group tuition isan effective form of teaching, not leastbecause the student is engaged and

concentrating for the full duration of thetutorial. this is a far cry from thedrifting attention that is often to befound in large school classes. For thisreason our students do not require asmany hours of direct contact time withtheir tutor as would be the case at school.

Standard ProgrammesOur standard a-level and gCSeprogrammes offer up to 36 hours oftime-tabled study per week, includingindividual or mini-group tuition, plusmonitored independent study in theCollege study room, in which studentsundertake written work, projects orresearch as prescribed by their tutors, with occasional guidance and assistancefrom College staff as required. theindependent study periods form a vitalpart of the student’s working routine, andprovide excellent preparation for the typeof study that they will meet at university.

Intensive ProgrammesWe also offer more intensive studyprogrammes which include greatercontact time with our tutors, for thosewho require additional support. Forinstance:

• students who have experienced disruptions

or difficulties in their education and need to

make up lost ground

• students beginning a course later in the

academic year

• students wishing to complete a course in

less than the usual time

• overseas students who have a weaker

background in the subjects they wish to

study.

Students may begin with an intensiveprogramme and revert to a standardprogramme later during their studies.

A typical timetable for a standard three A-level programme

Part-time ProgrammesMost of our students enrol on a full-timebasis. Some students, however, needdifferent study patterns - perhaps to fitaround a work experience programme, regular employment, or to supplementtheir study at another school duringevenings or weekends.

With the option of individual tuition wecan offer a totally flexible programme tomeet any specific needs.

Our College staff will always advisestudents, parents or guardians as to themost suitable study programme, following an assessment of each student’sbackground and academic requirements.

a-levelthe a-level (general Certificate ofeducation advanced level) is the goldstandard of the British secondaryeducation system. It is the usual andpreferred entrance qualification of allBritish universities. the a-level is nowdivided into two parts: aS (advancedSubsidiary) exams are usually taken atthe end of the first year, followed by a2exams at the end of the second. allsubjects consist of six modules, threeeach at aS and a2 level. Studentsnormally take three or four a-levelsubjects over two years.

gCSethe gCSe (general Certificate ofSecondary education) is the nationalqualification taken prior to a-levels.Students usually take five or six gCSesubjects per year.

IgCSe &International a-levelthese qualifications are availableworldwide and are transferable betweencentres and countries, allowing studentsto continue their home countryeducation in the UK.

examinationsOxford International College is aregistered examination centre for all ofthe english examining boards (aQa,edexcel and OCR), as well as CambridgeInternational examinations (CIe). thisenables students who transfer to us fromother schools to continue with the samesyllabus that they are familiar with.

A-level exams are taken in May/June.

GCSE exams are usually taken inMay/June, with some available innovember.

IGCSE and International A-levelexams can be taken in May/June andOctober/november.

IELTS exams are available once or twicea month throughout the year.

IeltSFor students whose mother tongue isother than english, British universitiesrequire evidence of proficiency inenglish. their preferred option is IeltS(the International english languagetesting System), which measures abilityto communicate in english across all fourlanguage skills – listening, reading, writing and speaking. We offer IeltScourses on a full-time or part-time basis

“ The course content was perfect forwhat I needed which was an insightinto the degree I want to study. Study Programmes

two-Year Programme (6 terms)

this is the normal option for studentsjoining Oxford International College tobegin their full-time a-level or gCSestudies. a-level students normally takethree or four aS subjects in the first year, and three a2s in the second.academically strong students may takefour a2 subjects. gCSe studentsnormally take 8 to 12 gCSes over twoyears.

One-Year Programme (3 terms)

this programme is usually taken bystudents wishing to re-take some or all oftheir a-level or gCSe exams. It is idealfor the following types of student:

• A-level students who have completed their

exams at a previous school and who wish

to re-take some or all modules in order to

improve their overall grades

• AS students who have completed their AS

level exams with disappointing results, but

who do not wish to retake the entire AS

year. In this case students can transfer to

Oxford International College with the aim of

completing their AS retakes.

• GCSE students who wish to take up to six

subjects, either as retakes or for the first

time

In exceptional cases, mature a-levelstudents or students with particularlystrong academic backgrounds may beable to complete both aS and a2examinations in a single year, dependingon the subjects studied. OxfordInternational College will advise suitablestudents of this option, following theirinitial assessment or interview.

18-month Programme (5 terms)

We also offer 18-month a-level andgCSe programmes, beginning inJanuary and ending in June of thefollowing year. this option is suited tostudents who have made a ‘false start’ totheir studies at a previous school, forexample due to the wrong subjectchoices or other difficulties at school.the 18-month programme is also idealfor international students whose highschool exams are taken later in the year, and who are therefore unable to begintheir studies with us in September.

One-term Retakethe one-term a-level retake programmeusually runs from September or January, with exams in May/June. It is primarilyfor students who have failed to achievethe required a-level grades to gain accessto their chosen university course.

Students may retake any combination ofaS and a2 units permitted by theexamination boards. One advantage ofthe one-term retake course is thatstudents can still benefit from up to eightmonths of a gap year.

“At my previous school, I obtained 3D grades at AS level. After 1 year atOIC I managed to get ABB. Theideal nature of one-to-one tuition orteaching in small groups meansstudents are not intimidated to ask aquestion which they might not havethe confidence to ask in a largerclassroom situation. Not only can Isay that I got a good education, Ialso had a fantastic time as well!Overall, coming to OIC was the bestdecision I ever made.”
