Rev. Canon Jane, Kenchington, 01454 313159, email:[email protected]

Dear Friends,

In the gospels, we find Jesus asking people the question, “Who do peoplesay that I am?” And we find Peter answering bolding, telling Jesus that herecognises that Jesus is the Messiah.

It’s a question that it is good for us to be asked. Who do you say Jesus is?What does he mean to you? I was asking a group of people this questionrecently and the replies were very interesting. Many of them had an imageof a meek and mild Jesus; they admitted that their image came fromchildhood and hadn’t progressed much beyond that. They weredumbfounded to think that Jesus was quite a revolutionary figure. Onemember of the group said, “So Jesus, if he was on earth now, would bespending time with the homeless and drug addicts…” It blew their minds.

November is the month when we celebrate Jesus as King (Christ the KingSunday is the Sunday before Advent begins). If we say that Jesus is ourKing what does that mean? It’s something rather different from the royalimages we can conjure up in our minds. In the gospel reading for that daythis year, we find Pilate questioning Jesus, “Are you the King of the Jews?”Pilate, who can only think about earthly monarchies, is perplexed. ThisJesus, standing in front of him does not seem “Kingly” at all. And Jesustells Pilate that his (Jesus’) Kingdom is not from this world. It is somethingdifferent. Jesus as King is someone different from earthly monarchs. Jesus’spower is a different sort of power – seen in weakness on the cross. Jesus’power is not an abusive power. He allows himself to be vulnerable; incoming to earth, he humbled himself, taking the form of a servant (says,Paul in his letter to the Philippian church). As Christians, our call is tobecome more Christ-like – to allow God’s Spirit to transform us intoChrist-like people. That means becoming more like Jesus in terms ofservanthood and vulnerability, among other things. The call to be a Christianinvolves bowing our knee to Jesus as the King of our lives.

So, as we move into November, ponder that question that Jesus asks eachone of us: Who do you say that I am? How you answer that question willdetermine how you allow your life to be shaped. With love and prayers,

She picked five women fromthe Bible, Mary, the mother of Jesus, Ruth,Esther, Martha and Mary Magdalene andpaired them with Mary Sumner, GladysAylward, Edith Calvell, Mother Theresaand Florence Li Tim-Oi.We talked about the talents these womenmust have had to do what God asked ofthem. RemembranceWith the passing of time memories canfade. Sometimes a positive thing if thememories are particularly painful. Butsome memories are important to hold onto so they can inform and shape ourresponse to the present and future. Thisyear Armistice Day falls on a Sunday.Across our country people will stand toobserve the two minute silence. “Weshall remember them”. We recall theenormous sacrifice made in two WorldWars. It is hard to imagine what life in thiscountry might be like today if the evil ofNazism had not been fought against, butthe cost for many was great. We shouldremember their sacrifice withthanksgiving, grateful for the freedom weenjoy. As we recall the sacrifices made by somany in two World Wars we are consciousof our service men and women inAfghanistan, still paying an enormouslyhigh price. As we survey our world, wesee injustice, violence, suffering in whichthe innocent and the vulnerable (so oftenwomen and children) are caught up ashelpless victims. We long to see more ofGod’s Kingly rule of justice, compassion, righteousness, peace become a reality inevery corner of God’s world. Every timewe meet as Christians for worship we praythe Lord’s Prayer “Your Kingdom come,Your will be done on earth as in heaven”.As we pray that prayer we pray it first andforemost for ourselves. I am challengedto be open to God’s Kingly rule in my ownlife. I am challenged to be a person ofpeace, a peace-maker in my relationshipsand areas of influence. I am challengedto speak out against injustice wherever Isee it.From the Bishop of Tewkesbury,The Rt. Revd. John Went,

Sodbury Ringers 40th anni-versaryIn September 2012 Sodbury Ringers cel-ebrated their 40th anniversary. We were founded in September 1972,when an unused set of hand bells wasdiscovered in the vestry of St John’sChurch. A number of young people fromthe church expressed an interest in play-ing the bells so a group was formedwhich quickly grew to include young peo-ple from the surrounding district, becom-ing known as 'Sodbury Ringers'.The group first met in the house offounder, Alan Pidgeon, but soon outgrewthis and moved to the Church Hall inHatters Lane. Since then the ringershave moved on to practise in the churchvestry, the ringing chamber in the towerand finally settled in the comfort of theupper room of the Church Centre. Hav-ing played the old bells for some years, the group raised enough money in 1985to purchase their own set of hand bellsfrom the Whitechapel Foundry.Over the years the make-up of the grouphas changed from the original youthgroup, through a junior and senior teamin the 1980s, to our current small adultgroup. We have entertained at many lo-cal venues, especially homes for the eld-erly, where our range of Christmas musicis especially popular. Our speciality isringing 'call changes' (mimicking churchtower bells) and we are often invited toring at weddings to greet the guests andbride as they arrive.Alan Pidgeon

Experience Harvest October2012I’m sure lots of you were wondering whya colourful little shelter appear in the LadyChapel at the end of September. All will be revealed!

At the beginning of October the Churchwas filled with bright-eyed children, a buzzof excited anticipation and muted chatter.Yes! ‘Experience Harvest’ was wellunderway. Classes of children from St.John’s School and Raysfield Infants’ werelearning about the many aspects ofHarvest and appreciating just how thankfulwe should be for God’s goodness. Theyexplored the Harvests of the grain, flock, earth, garden and the sea with membersof the congregation who cheerfully gaveof their time to share this aspect of theirfaith with the children. Finally, the secret of the shelter wasrevealed! At the same time that Christiansin Britain are celebrating Harvest, Jewishpeople are remembering the time whentheir ancestors escaped from Egypt: theThanksgiving Festival of Succot. A Sukka ( shelter) is built in the gardensof Jewish homes where the family will eatand sometimes sleep. A small gap is leftin the leafy roof so the heavens can beseen to remind them that God is alwayswith them just as He was on that long andhazardous journey to the promised land, when a similar shelter had to be built everynight. The children were told the dramatic storyof the escape and were wide eyed at theparting of the Red Sea!God’s faithfulness to us all wasremembered as we thought about how weshould be faithful to Him by living goodlives full of the ‘Fruits of the Spirit’. Picturesof fruit, one brought from each aspect ofHarvest they had visited, were hung on theSukka. They bore names of the spirit fruitsthey had been thinking about at eachstation: joy, generosity, humility, patienceand peace. We concluded with a prayerasking that we always have the fruits ofthe spirit in our lives. The children from both schools were veryinterested and responsive and I am so

Dates for your diary…2013Bishop Michael will be visiting thisBenefice on Sunday 10 February andspending the whole of the followingweekend (15-17 February) with us all.On 10 February, he will be confirming(and possibly baptising) some (or all!) ofthe people who are currently on the Ex-ploring Christianity Course. This servicewill be at 9.30 am at St John’s, ChippingSodbury. In between now and then, please remember, in your prayers, thepeople who are attending this course. They are mostly in their 20s and 30s,some who have been married recently, orwho will be marrying next year and someare parents of the children who have beenbaptised recently. Others are slightly old-er. So far, 13 people have been coming tothe course – and it’s really enjoyable andexciting! The following weekend is a unique eventfor us. Whilst Bishop Michael has beenour Diocesan Bishop, he has been con-ducting “teaching weekends” around thediocese. He has not done such a week-end in this Benefice so far, so it’s good tobe able to welcome him. One of the rolesof a Bishop is to be a teacher of the faithand Bishop Michael is indeed a born

teacher and it’s exciting that he will becoming to our Benefice next February. The theme will be on the Eucharist (HolyCommunion). Full details of this weekendhave yet to be worked out, but please dobook that weekend in your 2013 diary.JK

Church at XEWKIJA (show-key-ya) untilnow. The original Church was built in 1665when it was a small village of about 400people The village grew and the Churchcould not accommodate all the people ,soin 1954 the Church decided to build a newone. They built the new one around theoutside of the old one. When finished theysimply dismantled the one inside. TheChurch can now seat the whole Parish, about 3000 in one sitting. The Dome which weighs 45000 tons issupported by 8 pillars and is bigger thanSt. Paul’s Cathedral in London. A lift hasbeen installed to take visitors to the roof

so they can see all around the VillageNearly all the work of building of the newchurch and then dismantling the oldChurch was carried by the villagersthemselves. The new Church wasconsecrated on June 17th 1978 and a newset of bells hung in 2007.Chris and Jenny Evans

St John’s Old Sodbury ~Harvest Festival CelebrationHarvest Festival was celebrated at OldSodbury, with Harvest Services and anexcellent Supper.Gifted flower arrangers, decorated thechurch, harvest gifts were offered at theHarvest Service on the Sunday, and bychildren from Old Sodbury School at theirservice on the Monday morning. Thenon–perishable gifts were taken to theLoaves and Fishes Project, run by thenuns in St Pauls, to distribute to those inneed in Bristol. Fresh produce and flowerarrangements were transferred to theVillage Hall, serving a second time asbeautiful harvest decoration at the HarvestSupper, before raising money as sale andauction items.Penny Weir from the Air AmbulanceService gave a very interesting aftersupper speech, thanking St John’s OldSodbury for supporting the Service andexplaining that they are funded entirely bydonations. They have only a smallnumber of paid staff, the paramedics anddoctors are all volunteers. The AirAmbulance, based at Filton, servesBristol, Bath and the surrounding counties, but will go beyond these boundaries ifneeded. The cost of running the serviceis around £1.3 to £1.5 million a year; eachminute of flying time costs around £15 infuel!Generous bidding ensued at the auctionof the flower arrangements and produce, which included two fruit cakes, and noveltyitems this year, six huge onions, around akilo each, which had won first prize at theMarlborough Show. A total of £862 wasraised for the Air Ambulance Service.Thank you to everyone who gave of theirtime, items, or money, to make thecelebration so enjoyable and support theAir Ambulance, and the St Paul’s project.

‘I will sing a new song to you,O God.’ (Psalm 144)

Having a robed choir, a music group tolead our all-age Eucharist and a band toplay for St John’s praise is a real blessingin St John’s Church, Chipping Sodbury. We are also fortunate to have the jointforces of the Benefice Choir to lift ourfestival celebrations and help mark specialoccasions.
