Dear Friends,

2011 marks the 400th anniversary of the publication of the King James' Version of the Bible. Some people say that at the time when it was produced, this was the most influentialpublishing event in the English-speaking world.

The words on the title page of the King James' Bible run as follows:"THE HOLY BIBLE: Containing the Old Testament and the New. Newly translated out ofthe original tongues: and with the former translations diligently compared and revised. ByHis Majesty's special commandment. Appointed to be read in churches. Imprinted at Londonby Robert Barker. Printer to the King's Most Excellent Majesty."

The "former translations" are those of Tyndale and Coverdale, combined in the Matthew'sBible of 1537 and issued in 1539 as the Great Bible, the first to receive the royal imprimaturand to be placed in churches. A translation by Protestant exiles (the Geneva Bible) was thePuritans' favourite and the Bishops' Bible of 1568 was supervised by Archbishop Parker. KingJames' Bible was more than a light revision, however, and reigned supreme for nearly 300years as the English Bible as the result of its scholarship. This translation had far-reaching effects on society in England. The Bible became so centralto national life that one scholar has spoken of the English inhabiting a Biblical culture as aresult. The advent of the KJV Bible helped to create the identity of the English language and inspiredwriters and musicians to embrace Biblical themes in their works; the Bible served as a critiqueof authorities; and it inspired hope and action in people, sometimes encouraging them tochallenge the status quo in their Society. This month the Church remembers William Tyndale who was one of the Reformationmartyrs, burned at the stake for having the courage to translate the Bible into English. Hispassion for making the Bible accessible to ordinary people puts us to shame when we sooften take the Bible for granted and rarely allow it to really challenge our lives.William Tyndale spent some of his time as a Chaplain to the family at Little Sodbury Manor. To mark the 400th anniversary of the publication of the KJV, Bishop Michael is coming topreach at St Adeline's, Little Sodbury on Sunday 16 October at 6pm. Please do come alongto the service - you are all most welcome. With love and prayers,

Rev. Canon Jane, Kenchington, 01454 313159, email:[email protected]

Yate and ChippingSodbury Foodbank.

"A helping hand, a listening ear and acaring heart."

What is a Foodbank?A foodbank collects food and thendistributes it to provide short term reliefto people in crisis.

Why?The main reasons for feeding peopleare:i. Benefit delayii. Low income/debtiii. Redundancyiv. Chronic, sudden illnessv. Bereavement

How?1. Collecting the foodFood is donated by shoppers, supermarkets, churches and schools. The food is generally tinned or packetwith a long shelf life.

2. Collating the foodThe food is sorted, date controlled, weighed and packed into food boxes, each of which contains sufficient food forthree days for a family of four.

3. Identifying the clientsVouchers are issued by Social Services,Health centres, schools, other charitableoperations (e.g CAP advisors, CitizensAdvice Bureau, Surestart, etc.) andchurches when they identify people incrisis. In some instances, people will be"signposted" to the foodbank (e.g. byJobcentre Plus). In the main, thefoodbank will rarely identify its ownclients and will not be involved inassessing need.

4. Distributing the foodThe client presents the voucher at a"café" where there is a warm welcome, adrink and a "greeter" who gentlyestablishes if there is any other help thatcan be given and "signposts" that help.

The client leaves with three days worthof meals for their family.Food boxes can also be provided toother charities and agencies for theirclients with immediate needs, dependenton donations.

The NeedGovernment Indices of deprivation showthat there are more than 13 millionpeople in the UK living on the edge ofpoverty. Despite much of Yate andChipping Sodbury appearing to bereasonably affluent, some of those 13million will be in our midst.

There are 32,500 identified deprivedareas nationally. 162 deprived areas arein South Gloucestershire and 19 of theseare in Yate and Dodington.

Consequently, Yate and Dodington isdesignated a Priority Neighbourhood."

What Support is required?

The plan would be to sign up tomembership of the Trussell TrustNetwork of Foodbanks. The rationale isthat the Trust has now "seeded" 100foodbanks across the country and hasproduced professional marketingmaterials, operating manuals, outlinebusiness plans, guidelines for hygiene, safety and legal impacts and they willprovide training for volunteers. Last yearthey fed over 60,000 people. The abilityto "network" with others who have beenthrough the process will be valuable - itis logical to avoid re-inventing the wheel.Gloucester has a foodbank under thisumbrella and Easton will be startingtheirs on June 7th.

Signing up for a three-year contract withthe Trussell Trust will cost £1500 and theDiocese of Gloucester's Director forSocial Responsibility has indicated thatthe Churches Together can apply for agrant to meet this cost. The Diocese isfully behind us on this initiative.

Chipping Sodbury PCC is currently indiscussion about joining in this initiative.Personally, I believe we should bejoining in. Food Banks are being set upin other parts of our diocese. This isn'tsome "Yate novelty venture." The visionhas come from Christians who long forthe church to serve the needy in theirlocal community. It is all aboutresponding to the imperative in scripture- Isaiah 58:10 & Matthew 25:35 andit's all about Preserving Self Esteem andReviving Hope.

Please would you share your views withPCC members so they can gauge thelevel of support for this initiative.Jane Kenchington

Pastors partyThe newly formed Chipping SodburyStreet Pastors held a get together in thegarden of one of their members as theforecasters promised barbeque weather. It was barbeque weather - as soon as itwas lit it started to rain! which is aboutnormal for a summer gathering.

Undeterred, they chatted and munchedand had their photos taken in 'civvies'.They are on the lookout for newmembers to join them on a Friday andSaturday night in Chipping Sodbury. Ifyou can't get out on these nights why notjoin as a prayer partner? Talk to Val andshe will tell you everything you need toknow.

HOLIDAY HOME Bishop Michael's Letter

Broken Society, Broken ChristIn October we have the partyconferences and then the return ofparliament. No doubt in both there will beanalysis of the August riots on our citystreets. Reflecting on what happenedand on things that were said in theimmediate aftermath are important if weare genuinely to learn and to address theissues.

There are some mistakes that are easilyidentified, things said or policies adoptedin the heat of the moment that, inretrospect, we ought to regret. Can itreally make any sense to evict from theirhomes people whose children wereinvolved in rioting, adding to thehomeless population and putting somevulnerable people on the streets? Isthere a real case for putting in prison amother of young children whose solecrime is to receive stolen goods?Although a short sharp experience ofprison might well teach some foolishyoung people a lesson, will sentences ofseveral years in prison really improvethem or society? Christianity with itsconcern for justice and for the poor hasthings to say when we are exploringsuch questions.

More fundamentally we need to explorethe statement that our society is broken,or even sick. Again Christian faith hassomething to say. It talks aboutbrokenness, looks to the brokenness ofJesus on the cross and invites us toshare broken bread, a sign of the fragilityof our lives. Clearly our society is, at acertain level, a fractured one, but theresponse to the riots also showed asociety in which there is solidarity withneighbours, compassion for thesuffering, and respect for one another.

That impressive gathering of thousandsto honour the three men who died inBirmingham defending their communityshowed that.

The truth is that human nature, thehuman nature of each one of us, is amixture of good and evil. We are fallenhumanity, capable of heroism and oflove, but spoiling it often by selfishnessand sin - and that is a kind of sickness. But that is not just about somedisenchanted "underclass". It is part ofeach one of us. It is why we need aSaviour and have one in Jesus, who wasbroken that we might be put togetheragain.

Saving our Knees at StAdeline's

The hassocksat StAdeline's,LittleSodbury, have beenlooking theworse forwear for sometime.

Nancy Nagle solved the problem byorganising sponsorship for newKneelers. She has persuaded most ofthe congregation to sponsor one or morehassocks. The sponsor chooses thedesign, and if they wished can do theneedlework themselves, as some have, but for others volunteers were found todo the work. The hassocks were thenexpertly put together by Alison Barton toproduce the finished article. On the evening of Wednesday 17thAugust the church held a viewing at StAdeline's to show off the new hassocksand thank all the sponsors. Thehassocks were laid out in front of thealtar, acknowledging the sponsors andmaking a very colourful display. Lightrefreshments and wine were served andabout 40 people attended, viewing thenew kneelers and having a thoroughlyenjoyable evening. Thanks to Nancy, Alison and all theneedle workers (not all ladies).
