Yamaha’s innovative 4-stroke technology – Difference Number One!In recent years, our driving ambition in outboard design has been to combine the lightness and compactness of the incredibly reliable, high performance 2-strokes that originally made us so famous, with the superior economy, smoothness, sophistication and environment-friendliness of 4-stroke engine technology. It’s been an elusive goal, but those years of intensive research and on-water testing truly bore fruit and the Yamaha range is now exclusively 4-stroke, offering the previously impossible - a complete line-up of ultra-modern, advanced technology engines, all of which are comparable in weight and size to their original 2-stroke predecessors.

So how did we achieve this? Purely and simply by innovating. Look at our Four Stroke range and you’ll see technologies like CDI ignition, advanced EFI (Electronic Fuel Injection) systems, revolutionary and unique engine layouts, ingenious intake and exhaust systems … even VCT (Variable Camshaft Timing). Overseeing all this is a ruthlessly efficient system of micro-computer control, monitoring every aspect - from fuel mixture, to combustion efficiency, to maintenance scheduling - it’s no accident that a Yamaha outboard holds a world record for fuel economy.

Above all, Yamaha’s 4-stroke development has been so successful because from the very start, we never tried to adapt ordinary, everyday automotive engines, as most others have done. We build only pure marine-specification 4-stroke engines from scratch. Every cubic centimetre, inside and out, designed with total, all-round performance in mind - and dedicated to your pleasure on the water!

A great many exciting and exclusive features set a Yamaha apart from every other brand, and have helped create the unique Yamaha reputation for user-friendly performance, turnkey reliability and matchless durability.

It is impossible to list them all, particularly in the detail required for more technically advanced or specialist types of engine, but the following pages offer a brief summary of the more important and helpful features, many of which are to be found on most Yamaha outboards; they are some of the special ingredients which add up to create the Yamaha Difference!

Warning Systems for engine protection and safetyOil pressure, engine temperature and other conditions are monitored and various audio/visual warning devices are fitted. If a fault occurs, available engine rpm is automatically reduced while the fault exists, providing maximum protection for the engine while running the boat to shore.

Micro-computer ECM (Engine Control Module)

The Yamaha Difference

Fresh Water Flushing SystemStandard on all models 6hp and above. No need to start or run the engine - just connect a hose to the easy-access, front-mounted connector and flush salt and dirt from the engine waterways. Reduces corrosion and extends engine life.

Wide Range Power Trim & TiltStandard or an option on models 25hp and above, this compact, light and powerful system is unique to Yamaha. Quick response from a convenient push-button control makes trim and tilt swift, smooth and easy.

The -4° to +16° range offers best possible hull performance in all conditions. Negative trim setting (-4°) improves acceleration and brings the boat onto the plane quickly.

‘Start-in-gear’ ProtectionPrevents engine start when Forward or Reverse is selected. On Manual Start models, the starter is locked when in gears other than Neutral. On Electric Start versions, the power supply to the starter motor is isolated until Neutral is selected.

PrimeStart™Exclusive to Yamaha, the PrimeStart™ Auto-choke feature is standard on many models. As easy as in your car - start from cold by simply turning the key! Eliminates the need for a conventional choke and the engine ‘warms up’ automatically, so no need for ‘revving-up’ in Neutral.

High-output AlternatorsStandard on most Yamaha models. Plenty of power is always available to start the engine, even after prolonged periods of idling or running at low revs using multiple accessories.

YDC-30The unique, anti-corrosion aluminium alloy developed by Yamaha to protect exterior engine components.

Self-sacrificing anodesFitted in carefully calculated positions on engine casings, mounting brackets, lower units - and inside the engine block and waterways of some engines; high-grade alloys are used to help control and minimise the effects of saltwater.

High quality stainless steel

Special anti-corrosion steel is used for many components such as drive and prop shafts, steering arms and through-tubes.

5-Stage exterior coatingAfter being oven-baked for ultimate adhesion and hardness, a build-up sequence of tough primers, undercoats and acrylic resins are sealed in by a final coat of clear urethane lacquer. This gives every Yamaha its unique lustre and long-lasting, easy-maintenance gloss finish.

Special zinc coating

Applied to all non-moving stainless steel parts to increase resistance to galvanic corrosion - also acts as a back-up to the sacrificial anode system.

Digital Instruments and Digital Network Gauges

Digital instruments are available as standard or as options on many Yamaha outboards. Designed for optimum visibility and durability, they provide accurate information to help maximise engine performance and efficiency.

• Multifunction Tachometer: RPM - Hours - Trim angle - Oil pressure - Warning lamps • Multifunction Speedometer: Speed - Trip - Time - Fuel - Battery voltage • Fuel Management Gauge: Fuel consumption - Fuel economy

For 2007 (and later models) with Electronic Fuel Injection, an exciting range of Digital Network Gauges is now available. See Pages 30 - 31 for more about this super-accurate, easy-to-read, simple-to-install instrumentation.

Counter-rotating Propeller ModelsA standard twin-engine installation (both propellers turning clockwise) ‘pulls’ the boat towards the port side, making steering difficult, especially at higher speeds. All models 115hp and above are available with a counter-rotating propeller, offering perfect ‘neutral helm’ control when fitted alongside a standard model.

Dual Battery Charging SystemCharges 2 batteries at the same time, keeping plenty of power available for engine starts, even after long periods at low rpm. Available as option on F150 and above.

F4 F2.5

These remarkable little engines have won the hearts of owners around the world because, thanks to Yamaha’s pioneering technology, they’ve found a capable, reliable, stylish pick-up-and-go 4-stroke outboard that’s a joy to use and a pleasure to own.

Yacht owners love them too, because they make great auxiliaries. The convenience and portability of these well-balanced engines, with their large, comfortable carry-handles, is a big advantage, but the miserly fuel consumption, simple, user-friendly controls and vibration-free reliability count for a lot too. All this, plus the superb handling and manoeuvrability - and the way you know it will always start so easily - adds a new dimension to small boat adventures.

24

For sheer power, driving force and manoeuvrability, rather than out-and-out speed, choose a High Thrust (FT) model.

These are special versions of our latest-technology 4-stroke engines, all of which set new standards in performance while reducing

noise, vibration and fuel consumption to unprecedented levels.

For sailboats, fishing and work boats, Yamaha’s patented Dual-Thrust propeller (FT8/FT9.9/FT25) provides full thrust in both forward and reverse, allowing effortless manoeuvrability with impressive power against the water.

The FT50 and FT60 use a large propeller and special gear ratio and feature the Yamaha EFI system, for clean, economical, reliable performance. The special high-output charging system keeps batteries topped up even on long, low-speed trips.

Just switch on and go...Electric Drive - M26 • M20 • M18 • M12

25

For a quiet lake or river, choose a Yamaha Electric Drive; there isn’t a more convenient, environment-friendly way to power a small boat.

These simple 12V units are very light and the adjustable bracket allows quick, effortless fitting to almost any small boat. A comfortable, twist-grip throttle makes control very straightforward and manoeuvring is a real pleasure. They’re tough, too, with permanent magnet motors, damage-resistant casings and

coatings, and a special composite drive shaft that won’t bend, break or corrode in normal use.

All Yamaha Electric Drives are fitted with a special Weedless Wedge propeller that maximises thrust and is designed to resist trailing weeds and other underwater debris.

Understanding the Model CodesThe Model Names and code letters make it easy to select exactly the right outboard. As in the example below, the prefix letter indicates the basic engine type (Four Stroke/High Thrust etc), the number gives a guide to approximate shaft horsepower, and the single letter immediately after the number shows the ‘generation’ of the model.

Any additional code letters identify the variant of the engine (starting and steering method, type of tilt system and shaft length).

Outboard Transom HeightsMost Yamaha Outboards are available in a choice of shaft lengths (S • L • X • U) designed to match any boat transom height, and to allow the outboard to perform with maximum efficiency.

The ‘Outboard Transom Height’ (Dimension 1) is not the same as the ‘Standard Boat Transom Height’ (Dimension 2) because it is used to calculate the optimum shaft length required to achieve the most efficient positioning of the lower unit and the propeller.

Yamaha ‘Outboard Transom Heights’ are based on the following ‘Standard’ boat transom heights which should be used as a guide to choosing the right outboard.

S To fit ‘Standard Transom Height’ of approx 381 mm (15 ins)

L To fit ‘Standard Transom Height’ of approx 508 mm (20 ins)

X To fit ‘Standard Transom Height’ of approx 635 mm (25 ins)

U To fit ‘Standard Transom Height’ of approx 762 mm (30 ins)

You have it in your car … now get it on your boat!

These days, car drivers expect nothing less than a fully integrated, computer-controlled system to monitor technical functions reliably and accurately, with stylish instruments that are easy to read and understand. So why shouldn’t we expect the same luxury when driving a boat?

Well, now we can! Yamaha’s digital network system, with its comprehensive line-up of Digital Network Gauges, really is a revolution in command and control.

The style tells its own story

The smart, sophisticated appearance of these stylish gauges speaks for itself; simpler and easier to install than conventional systems, they are a pleasure to read and use … and as tough and accurate as they look. We even offer a choice of round or square designs, and a range of mounts to suit your boat console; so if you own a 2007-model Yamaha EFI outboard of more than 50hp then read on … because this is for you!

Accurate information is the key

The most obvious advantage is the availability of a wider range of advanced, accurate gauges than ever before; from basic speedometer and tachometer displays, to warning and control information for a variety of engine functions. Linking to your system to the (optional) triducer, allows you to monitor speed, seawater temperature and depth.

What’s more, these are multi-function gauges, so the combination of functions displayed, as well as the order they appear, are user-selectable. In addition (on F50/60/80/100/350 models) the system offers fuel flow management and electronic control of idling/trolling speed.

The reliability you expect from Yamaha

At the heart of this revolution is a robust (that’s ‘reliable’ in technical speak) network system; this offers many advantages, not only for the boat owner, but also for boat builders and dealers, because rigging, fitting and maintenance is now a breeze. No more untidy jumbles of separate wires, hoses and cables; just streamlined, easy-to-connect harnesses from the engine to the hub and onwards to the instruments, with colour-coded connectors linking the components of the system.

Compatibility that adds real functionality

Both the network system and the Digital Network Gauges are a perfectly engineered match for Yamaha EFI outboards (2007 models onwards) from 50hp upwards, all of which are now fitted with a special pre-installed connection port, enabling the engine ECU to communicate directly and efficiently with the central network.

What’s more, the system’s NMEA 2000 compatibility means that other peripherals can be connected easily to the network. You can add a GPS, radar, fish finder or other navigation aids and equipment (only from manufacturers who have chosen to use the NMEA 2000 protocol) opening up a whole new world of safer, more relaxed boating.

Our smaller Yamaha models come equipped with everything you need for turnkey operation (apart from fuel) but with larger engines, many of our customers like to make their own personal choice of propellers, remote controls and instruments.

The engines we supply without these rigging items are listed here, together with a selection of equipment available within the Flexible Rigging Programme. Your Yamaha Dealer will be pleased to help and advise you on the equipment that best suits your boat.

All 2007 models (50hp and up) with EFI systems are now fitted with a linking port, allowing you to enjoy the benefits of Yamaha’s sophisticated digital network system and to choose from our tempting range of Digital Network Gauges. Turn to the previous pages for the full story.
