This communication is to inform dealers about im-proved water pump impellers.

Improved water pump impellers are now avail-able in Water Pump Repair kit, P/N 5008972 andWater Pump Impeller Kit, P/N 5008968. Usethese kits for the models listed in the table below.

INSPECTIONIf the outboard exhibits a reduction of water flow,or overheat condition, inspect the following:

Impeller for hub separation, torn blades, orsigns of melting.

Cup and plate for scoring, distortion, andimpeller material transfer.

Pump housing for cracks or melting. Pressure relief valve and thermostat for

melting. External powerhead components for over-

heat damage.

Determine if the engine has overheated. UseEvinrude Diagnostics software to check for thefollowing:

Code 31; Engine temperature over range Code 40; Engine temperature above range

Low speed Code 43; Engine temperature above range Recorded maximum engine temperature

If any of these service codes are stored, and themaximum engine temperature is over 248F theremay be engine or exhaust megaphone damage.Perform a compression check and inspect the ex-haust megaphone. Remove the gearcase and vi-

sually inspect the exhaust megaphone for meltingor cracking.

Loss of performance will result from a damagedexhaust housing megaphone. The megaphonecan be damaged when an extended loss of waterflow occurs.

IMPORTANT: Replace the pressure relief valveand thermostat springs as required when installinga water pump impeller kit, or a complete waterpump kit. Follow the individual kit instructions care-fully.A change to the water pump impeller material im-proves the performance of the water pump. Thischange affects engine water pressure and mayrequire stronger pressure relief valve and thermo-stat springs.

Failure to install the impellerassembly and springs as a set can result in:

A cold running engine, if the impeller isinstalled without the pressure relief valveand thermostat springs.

An engine overheat, if the pressure reliefvalve and thermostat springs are installedwithout the new impeller.

Chrome water pump cup, P/N 328773 andchrome water pump plate, P/N 328772 are avail-able as individual service components. Use thechrome cup and plate for extreme operating con-ditions.

Complete a compression test. Compression val-ues should not differ more than 10% between cyl-inders.

Re-torque the cylinder head bolts. Refer to thecorrect Service Manual for torque specifications.

Note: Engine damage due to overheat conditions caused by obstructed water flow is NOT covered by the BRP Limited Warranty.
