I spent close to 10 years selling custom window treatments and over time I noticed that clients had furniture they liked and accessories they liked but very often the rooms just didn’t come together. Q. Are you known for anything special?A. Yes, one day redecorating (really in just a few hours) and I also work with clients to help them select colors for their homes.

Mel Quinlan started Satchel, a boutique selling handbags and acces-sories, last June in a small storefront in Cohoes. Since its inception Satchel has progressed from a mostly consignment store to a shop that features locally made, women made, fair trade and recycled products. After almost one year in business Mel decided that the traditional storefront was not the only way that her business could fl ourish. A depressed economy, the location with limited foot traffi c and a desire to help her high school Jr. see his way through to college, prompted Mel to temporarily close the doors on Satchel. Instead of waiting for women to come to her she's decided that she will bring Satchel to the women. As with any new business model there are, and will be, growing pains associated with this change. But this experiment in retail may prove to be what other woman retailers are seeking--an alternative to keeping business fl owing while still having the ability to tend to their personal lives and families. So if last month’s column didn’t turn you off from paying to join a networking group, perhaps nothing will. But, unfortunately, I don’t give up so easily. So, this time I want to point out some of the popular sales pitches these organizations will throw your way to try to get you to join their ranks.

The group that I was a member of (BNI or Business Networking International) took pride in telling you that each of their chapters only allows one member to join in any given profession. In other words, there will only ever be one residential real estate agent in a chapter or one insurance agent, etc. The BNI rep or member that is trying to sign you up will tell you that once you are accepted in a chapter, because of this rule, all other members of the chapter must refer all business related to your profession to you.

This, of course, sounds great but, as you might have already guessed, is pretty much impossible to police or enforce. For example, a lawyer I knew in a different BNI chapter than mine, was concerned that she had received no referrals at all from her fellow chapter members. She was particularly concerned that she was not getting any work from the real estate agent in her group when she had made it clear that real estate was her specialty. My lawyer friend confronted the real estate agent who told her, without hesitation, that he wouldn’t be sending anything to her because he had an existing relationship with another attorney (not a BNI member, of course) that he was not willing to upset. He added that he would “keep her in mind” and that if anything came up that he could utilize

her services for that he would “throw her a bone.” When she reported this incredibly offensive behavior to the powers that be at the regional BNI offi ces, she was told, amongst other things, that there was nothing they could do about it, that she could not get a refund, and her remedy was to fi nd herself another chapter in the Capital Region that doesn’t have a lawyer that she could join. (Just an FYI – there are approximately 10 to 12 BNI chapters in the Albany area. In Philadelphia, the country’s 5th largest city, there is one.)

This rule causes problems when it comes to giving referrals as well. There was a gentleman in my chapter who fi lled the computer services category within that group. So, theoretically, when someone told me they were having trouble with their computers, I was supposed to direct them to this chapter member for the service they needed. Except there was one problem : no one, and I mean no one, believed this member or his company was in any way competent. I was talking with a writer friend of mine who had recently gone through some bad times with a laptop. He explained that his computer crashed and, not having the proper backup system in place, needed a computer maintenance company to retrieve the data from his laptop’s hard drive. He told me that he had taken his computer to a local service and, $600 or so later, he still had no laptop and he had been told that his data, which included all of his past articles, had been lost for good. I was getting ready to send him to my chapter mate and his company until it became quite clear that it was my chapter mate’s service that had taken his $600 and left him high and dry.

Equally troublesome was the associations interest in letting people change their categories. For example, there was a mortgage broker in my

chapter who decided that being a mortgage broker wasn’t paying the bills anymore. Instead, she decided that selling disability insurance was the way to go. Huh? How do I know if she can sell disability insurance? And why should I endorse her? And there was a real estate agent who suddenly found he wanted out of that business and, abracadabra – suddenly he was a property manager. But prior to this magical change, this member would stand up at every meeting and tell all of his chapter mates that he was the best real estate agent in the world and that we should send all of our hard earned clients his way . Or the guy who worked for a local cable distributor who would stand up each week to tell us how great his company was. Until they fi red him and he started working for a telecommunications company which suddenly became the greatest company in the world. I started wondering what would happen to me if I decided to go from being a lawyer to, say, fi xing lawn mowers. My clients would abandon me and my credibility would be destroyed.

I have tons of stories like this to tell you but, quite honestly, I have better things to think about. So this is the last bit of ink I’ll expend on this subject. And I’ll fi nish by reminding you that there is no easy way and there is no way to avoid the hard work necessary to make yourself a success in whatever fi eld you’re in. So take a page out of Nancy Reagan’s book and when someone asks you to pay up and join a networking group, just say no.

Senior Dogs -Twice Yearly visits to vet.

Look around and you will see yourself surrounded by people who are aging better than you—more gracefully. The same can be said of our pets. I see plenty of 10 year old dogs acting like puppies and others for whom getting to the yard to pee is a struggle. We all age. We all adapt. Hopefully our doctors help us adapt better. Each year my doctor sees me twice. He pokes and prods and draws blood. It’s inconvenient, slightly uncomfortable, and expensive. Last year he found my blood pressure was up and now, with meds, I don’t get the headaches and I yell less. 6 months ago he found my creaking knees and now, with supplements, I don’t ache in the mornings. 6 months from now he will tell me to walk more and I will fi nd better stamina and less stress. A year from now he will prevent my heart attack by encouraging me to eat better. My doctor will fi nd my skin cancer before it kills me. My doctor will look for small problems before they are big problems. That’s his job. Well, what if I said, “I’d like to see Ol’ Johnny again in 6 months instead of waiting a full year.” 6 months? I just paid almost $300 for a clean bill of health, a few vaccines, and some supplies! This is outrageous! Every day I hear the following: “I didn’t realize he’d lost so much weight, Doc.” “I don’t know when he started drinking more water—but he’s been peeing a lot for about a year”“His hips have been bothering him since last Winter”“He’s been bumping into things for a while, doc”“I don’t want him in any pain, doc” My associates and I routinely discuss ways to improve the care we provide. We review cases, talk about treatment plans, and come up with ways to better our medicine. Often we discuss the benefi ts of twice yearly exams. “But it’s an ANNUAL exam” I chime in—devils advocate. How are my clients going to swallow such a pill? In this economy!? My job, as your vet, is to make the best recommendations I can for your pet—regardless of your desires or fi nancial ability. I also need to not make people feel guilty for not following my recommendations. We all have different economic/social/family pressures and I am not dealing with your situations. I don’t have to live with the decisions you make for your pet…mostly. Sometimes it’s hard not to say, “Well, there’s nothing we can do now…too bad we didn’t address this problem 6 months ago.” I’ve wanted to say it plenty of times. Such a statement would only serve to make you feel bad about yourself and that’s not helpful. Imagine seeing the diabetic cat before it’s lost half of its body weight. Imagine fi xing the skin before it’s infected and the dog’s completely compromised. Imagine catching hypothyroidism before the obese dog cannot get off the couch. Our work has the potential to be vastly more successful if we could see the problems as they occur instead of well after they’ve taken hold. Makes sense, right? I’d love to see your pet every 6 months for “wellness” exams--just an easy visit where we can talk things over. I’m not sure we’re ready for a full court press on the subject, but I think you should know what we’re thinking…heads up. Dave Stone, DVM

JOJO is a 2 year old coonhound/walker mix. He is an exuberant, energetic boy who loves to play. Being unaware of his size, he is best placed with a dog who can handle playing and rough housing. He can not be

placed with cats. The same for small children: while JoJo would not intentionally hurt them, his size and exuberance could easily knock them over. JoJo is eager to please and responds well to positive reinforcement. He would be a great dog to further socialize in a beginners obedience class. He was likely tied outside most of his life and is working on manners, but he has been housetrained. With consistent reinforcement, JoJo will sit on command for food, treats, and attention. He still needs to work on leash manners and would be a fantastic distance running buddy! He does enjoy a fenced yard and is good about coming when called from the yard. JoJo will bark and bay when excited -- like at mealtime and fi rst thing in the morning when let out of his crate -- but is slowly learning to redirect his excitement. RUSSET ......Red Bone Coon Hound. This is a 5 year old sweetheart who also just happens to be very good looking. He did not have much of anything or any love the fi rst few years of his life but despite that he has one of the gentlest souls around. He loves people, children and other dogs of a gentle nature. that house cats are part of the family but outside he wants to chase them (any small animals). He’s playful but also is a lover who just wants to be curled up by his owner ! Bocker the Labradoodle®

Another month fl ying by and another very busy one. I was hired to co-star in a short fi lm about a couple moving from Brooklyn to the west coast and the dilemma…should they and can they take the dog (Me). A week of long days and nights fi lming in Brooklyn, but it was fun and I made some very nice new friends. My co-star is a terrifi c actor, Rider Strong, who many of you may remember as the star of tv’s “Boy Meets World”. Think we made a great team. Maybe it will win a fi lm festival award..that would be very exciting. Also will have to try to sneak in the see “Eat Pray Love” when it comes out in August. Was lucky enough to be on set with Julia Roberts and Brad Pitt (one of the producers) last year for fi lming in Cold Spring Harbor, NY.

I am so very excited to have been chosen to be special guest at the 7th Annual Albany Autism Society’s Walk & 5K Run. This is a cause that is very important to me. Hope lots of my friends will join Team Bocker and walk with us on September 12 at Central Park In Schenectady. Some quick summer tips: Don’t assume your dog knows how to swim. If he/she has never been swimming before, make sure to slowly introduce them to the water. Never throw your dog into the pool and think they will just swim! And don’t let your dog drink the pool water. Chlorine will make him/her sick. Lots of outdoor fun, but a big guy like me doesn’t really love the heat. Please don’t leave your dog outside when it is very hot; we can get heat stroke. Always have plenty of clean, cool water for us too. Not too different than the precautions you would take for a child! Love my days when I can sit under my favorite tree in my yard and enjoy a yummy Frosty Paws.

Well, I hope you survived June in one piece, for many, it was a tough one; thank goodness July is much better.

Here we go for July.

July is a month of being “there’ for friends. Reaching out to strangers. Making time for family: going out of your own way, just a little, to make someone else’s life a little easier. Generally, being more observant of what the person next to you is going through and support them in any way you can. It could be opening that door for someone loaded down, holding the elevator door even though they are technically far enough away you could close easily and make them wait. Offering help before you are asked. Brave starting a conversation you really don’t want to

have but you know that the other person really needs it. July is a month of “giving” kindness and consideration and receiving it in return. It is a month of becoming in sync with the fact if the person beside you or in your life comes “undone” or starts to “lose ground” it will affect you. If others become consumed by their own need to survive because there is no one there to help, just in the little things, it makes sense when you need them; to answer the phone, cook a meal, arrive to that event on time: it won’t happen. What goes around, most defi nitely comes around and we are all on the receiving end of that phenomena. Have a great July!

As in past years, the Rensselaer County Farmers’ Market at the Twin Town Little League Park on Williams Road in North Greenbush, will be open from 2:30 P.M. to 5:30 P.M.. each Thursday through October 14, 2010.

Returning farmers include Kristy’s Barn, Castleton; Krug’s Brookside Farm; East Schodach, Gold Krest Farms; Rensselaer; Tarbox Farms Earth’s Bounty, Troy; fresh made goat cheese and mozzarella from R&G Cheese, Cohoes; wines from Cascade Winery; stromboli and tomato pie from DeFazio’s of Troy.

Recipes of the Month

Fruit in a Cone 3 cups cut-up fresh fruit 4 ice cream cones 4 teaspoons honey 4 teaspoons granola, miniature semisweet chocolate chipsor chopped peanuts Place 3/4 cup of the fruit in each cone. Sprinkle each with 1 teaspoon honey and1 teaspoon granola. Serve immediately.

Special Touch Make a chocolate-edged cone. In 2-cup microwavable measure, microwave 1/3 cup semisweet chocolate chips and 1 teaspoon shortening uncovered on Medium (50%) about 2 minutes or until chips are melted; stir. Dip edge of each cone into melted chocolate, then dip into small candy decorations; let dry.

Ranch Spinach Pasta Salad1 box Betty Crocker® Suddenly Salad® pasta salad mix 1/2 cup Hidden Valley® The Original Ranch® dressing 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice 2 cups baby spinach leaves or small broccoli fl orets 3/4 cup grape tomatoes, halved 1/2 cup sliced cucumber, halved 1/2 cup julienne (matchstick-cut) carrots 2 tablespoons chopped fresh or 1 teaspoon dried basil

1. Empty contents of pasta mix (from Suddenly Salad box) into 3-quart saucepan 2/3 full of boiling water. Gen-tly boil uncovered 12 minutes, stirring occasionally. 2. Drain pasta; rinse with cold water. Shake to drain well. 3. In medium bowl, stir contents of seasoning mix (from Suddenly Salad box), the dressing and lemon juice until blended. Stir in pasta and remaining ingredients. Cover; refrigerate until ready to serve. Store any remaining salad covered in the refrigerator.

Grilled Italian Turkey Burgers1/2 lb ground turkey breast 3 tablespoons tomato pasta sauce 1 tablespoon fi nely chopped red onion 2 slices (1 oz each) mozzarella cheese, cut in half 1/2 baguette (8 inches), cut into two 4-inch pieces 2 lettuce leaves 2 slices red onion Additional tomato pasta sauce, if desired

1. Brush grill rack with vegetable oil. Heat gas or charcoal grill. In medium bowl, mix turkey, 3 tablespoons pasta sauce and chopped onion. Shape mixture into 2 patties, each about 3/4 inch thick and the approximate shape of the baguette pieces. 2. Cover and grill patties over medium heat 12 to 15 minutes, turning once, until thermometer inserted in center of patties reads 165°F. Top patties with cheese. Cover and grill about 1 minute longer or until cheese is melted. 3. Slice baguette pieces horizontally in half. Place lettuce leaves on bottom halves; top with burgers and onion slices. Top with remaining baguette halves. Serve with additional pasta sauce.


Things to do over the summer that teaches kids while having fun

Summer is here and the kids are on a break from school for three months. There are many things you can do to make the most of your summer and planning regular activities with and for your kids is one of them. It does require some planning to be able to have a plan for each day so your kids don’t end up in front of the television for hours or are constantly whining to you that they are bored. If you plan out on a calendar an activity for each day, it will give the kids something to look forward to and will give them a way to be stimulated both physically and mentally over their school vacation.One of the best ways to keep them stimulated and involved intellectually is to create a chart that involves a small amount of reading and math facts for them to do daily.You can get whatever books they are excited to read at your local library. The more they are interested in the book, the more likely they will be excited to do a few minutes of reading everyday. Cooking is another fun thing to do in the summer.Try making homemade ice cream or popsicles for a yummy summer treat. Cooking is great because math is used as well as creativity. Another great idea is to have the kids do some kind of physical activity each day. The trick to this is to make it seem like play then they won’t feel like they are exercising. Take a nature hike in the woods is another great idea and have them do leaf impressions during it to keep in a special book.

If you have a family vacation planned, prepare the kids for where they are going and make it educational too. Teach them about some interesting facts about the vacation spot and have them keep a trip journal. In the opening pages of Jamie Ford’s stunning debut novel, Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, Henry Lee comes upon a crowd gathered outside the Panama Hotel, once the gateway to Seattle’s Japantown. It has been boarded up for decades, but now the new owner has made an incredible discovery: the belongings of Japanese families,left when they were rounded up and sent to internment camps during World War II. As Henry looks on, the owner opens a Japanese parasol.

Amid the chaos of blackouts, curfews, and FBI raids, Henry and Keiko forge a bond of friendship–and innocent love–that transcends the long-standing prejudices of their Old World ancestors. And after Keiko and her family are swept up in the evacuations to the internment camps, she and Henry are left only with the hope that the war will end, and that their promise to each other will be kept.

Forty years later, Henry Lee is certain that the parasol belonged to Keiko. In the hotel’s dark dusty basement he begins looking for signs of the Okabe family’s belongings and for a long-lost object whose value he cannot begin to measure.
