Our theme this year was “We See Hope.” While we had some fun with the theme, we also were very impressed with all the ways that we found and witnessed hope this year. We consciously chose to stare at some of the weakest points of our community—and we chose to see hope—not despair. And we were pleasantly surprised at all the wonderful places, people, events, and circumstances where we could indeed find hope!

As our five Partner Families worked alongside countless volunteers, saved for their down payments, attended education classes, and prepared for homeownership—hope was found.

As hundreds of Union Chapel members rehabbed a dilapidated house on South Walnut Street—hope was found.

As over 900 ReStore donors generously gave reusable items, instead of throwing them away—hope was found.

As our team of 10 people travelled to Paraguay to help build homes—hope was found.

Looking back over this year, we want to thank you for the role you played in helping families in our community find hope.

Thank you!

Will Isaacs Lindsey ArthurBoard Chair 2012-14 CEO

New and gently used home improvement products line the shelves of Muncie Habitat ReStore. These products didn’t get there by accident—you intentionally donated them! Donors from all over Delaware County dropped off or called for a ‘pick-up’ over 900 times in 2014! Items like cabinets, appliances, light fixtures, furniture and more were all given at an astonishing rate this year—so much so, that sales reached an all-time high at $345,000! This generated record profit - over $114,000 – to support our local housing program!

This means three things for Muncie Habitat: 1) additional revenue for building and rehabbing homes in Delaware County; 2) an increase in re-useable items escaping the landfills; 3) more property owners are able to fix up their homes affordably by shopping at ReStore.

UNION CHAPEL MINISTRIESDuring the month of April, Union Chapel Ministries partnered with Muncie Habitat for Humanity to ‘blitz rehab’ (aka BlitzHab) a house at 2019 S. Walnut Street. Joleen Boykin, who would later purchase the finished home from Habitat, worked alongside nearly 200 volunteers from Union Chapel every day for several weeks while working her normal night job at the Youth Opportunity Center.

On Good Friday, a crowd gathered outside Joleen’s completed home, as Union Chapel Pastor, Gregg Parris, handed the keys to Joleen and her family. Joleen was overwhelmed by the love and support of so many people from Union Chapel who helped to transform the rundown house on Walnut into a beautiful home for her family. ‘Welcome Home’, Boykin family!

2014 GLOBAL VILLAGE TRIP: PARAGUAYMuncie Habitat for Humanity’s 2nd Global Village Team ventured to Asuncion, Paraguay in October. The team spent a week traveling, working, eating, and enjoying the culture of this South American country. Work days included building homes, and making connections with the partner families and staff of Habitat Paraguay. Friendships and faith abounded for this team.

VOLUNTEERSMore hours were donated by volunteers to Muncie Habitat for Humanity than ever before in 2014 – 18,000 volunteer hours were recorded last year! As Muncie Habitat has expanded the types of housing projects we take on (to include new construction, house rehabs and home repair projects), our volunteers have graciously stepped up to the challenge!

In addition to our construction sites, we host regular volunteers at our ReStore. Last year we added volunteers to our Partner Family mentoring program, where volunteers are matched with the families we serve to mentor, support and encourage them on their road to homeownership. A new ‘Thursday Night Crew’ emerged in 2014 to give small groups of volunteers who couldn’t volunteer during the daytime hours on weekdays or Saturdays an additional time slot to work with Habitat.

If you would like to join our fun and dedicated group of volunteers, check out our website for more information.

PARTNER FAMILIESHow do new Partner Families feel when they spend their first Christmas in their new home? Natalie Strong explains, “Christmas was so wonderful. I had a Christmas Eve dinner at my house. This was the best Christmas. I love, love, love the house. It’s so cozy and so warm. I don’t have to blast the heat to stay warm. And I’m saving over $500 each month on my housing costs!” Enjoying a warm, cozy home while repaying an interest-free mortgage, building assets through equity earned, reducing monthly living expenses over renting……these are just few of the benefits realized by Partner Families who purchased a home with Habitat for Humanity in 2014.

Truly experiencing what is meant by a ‘hand-up, not a hand-out’. Hope realized.
