Berea is now serving in areas where no other missions groups are reaching. If we fail tofulfill these commitments, millions of souls will have no opportunity to hear of the LordJesus and His provision of grace and salvation for them. vention, we now have on record 59churches and missions in three countries(Mexico, Chile, and Costa Rica). With thisrapid growth we have experienced bothblessings and challenges. But one thing weare thankful for is the overarching unityand harmony among our people, which is atestimony to the heart and spirit of thework of our pastors.

A general consensus among our men isthe need to establish new churches and mis-sions. So the associational leaders invitedBill Adkisson, Berea’s Mission SupportRepresentative, to conduct a seminar onchurch planting at this year’s convention.Bro. Adkisson shared with the pastors awealth of wisdom from his 50+ year’s experience as a home missionary.

In addition, we are focusing on our

young people. Pastor Lupe Macias andGabriel González are working hard to planevents for the evangelization and the disci-pling of our country’s teens. The week priorto the Association meeting, these men con-ducted their annual youth camp at El Urooutside of the city of Monterrey.

We are especially thankful for formermissionary Mitzi Satterfield who came backto Mexico for this year’s meeting. The ladieschose her to be the guest speaker for theirwomen’s prayer summit. This afternoonevent concluded powerfully with the ladiesforming triads for prayer.

We are expecting great things from Godduring the next twelve months. Please prayfor our association’s pastors and churches. Our next meeting is scheduled to take placein July 2008 at Tuxtepec, Oaxaca.

I’ll never get preached everything that Ihave learned.”These are the words ofPastor Miguel Martínez Ortiz, com-

menting on the usefulness of BereaMinistries’ Pastors Training Conference. This annual conference has become a sourceof encouragement and education for ourpastors and lay preachers. This fourth eventwill be held on January 7-11, 2008 at El Seminario Bíblico La Cruz in Reynosa,Tamaulipas. My friend, Dr. Kevin Trimble, and I will be providing the instruction.

We will be offering three classes this year.During the morning, Dr.Trimble will beteaching through Paul’s Epistles to Timothy, while I will be repeating our Bible Doctrinescourse for those who have not already taken

the class. In the afternoons, the instruc-tion will focus on Pastoral Ethics, andwill cover such important topics asministerial duties and integrity, familyroles and responsibilities, and leader-ship dos and don’ts.

This training is part of BereaMinistries’ commitment to provideongoing educational opportunities forour national pastors. This type ofschooling is essential to the develop-ment of strong churches and pastors onthe field. Our goal is to provide thiseducational experience free of charge to allof our pastors and lay preachers. We antici-pate being able, with your help, to provide50 men the opportunity of a lifetime.

We can accomplish this goal by finding50 churches or individuals to sponsor a pas-tor for only $300.This cost includes his

we know that when He calls, He provides.“For with God nothing shall be impossible.”(Luke 1:37) As such, we responded to thiscall with willingness and faith, knowing Hewould provide.

This project has not come without resist-ance, however. Even though everyonebelieves that Jesus died to save the wholeworld, some have not agreed with our deci-sion to answer God’s call into this dark anddistant culture. All Christians “agree” with

Acts 1:8, “Ye shall be witnesses unto meboth in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and inSamaria, and unto the uttermost part of theearth.” All preachers preach Mark 16:15,“Go ye into all the world, and preach theGospel to every creature.” Every SundaySchool teacher leads her class in singing,“Jesus loves the little children, all the chil-dren of the world.” Because of this I wasshocked to meet criticism and resentment ofour Mexico home. Much to my amazementsome churches and donors stopped support-ing our Virginia children’s home because webegan ministering to these Mexican orphans.

July 28 was an exciting day for HarvestChild Care Ministries. Four years ofplanning, praying, blood, sweat and

tears finally saw the opening of Harvest ofMexico. Brother Elias and his new team ofhouseparents and kitchen help prepared thedorms and dining areas for the children toarrive. By evening 32 children had traveledfrom the remote villages around Tuxtepec,

Oaxaca to their new home. The propertythat was once quiet farmland was now filledwith play and laughter.

Fourteen years ago when Harvest ChildCare Ministries first opened its doors inDuffield,VA - who would have thought ourministry would eventually reach into anoth-er country? Why did God call us toTuxtepec? The only answer I know isbecause He knew we would go.Throughoutour history we have always been willing torescue children wherever He calls. We donot always know how it will be done orfrom where the resources will come; but

Berea in Santiago,Chile celebrated itsfirst anniversary.Thegrowing congregationhas accomplished manythings during the last

twelve months, the most important ofwhich is organizing its outreach efforts.Today the church conducts regular evangel-istic services throughout the week, includ-ing Sunday School and home Bible studies. The members are also involved in a system-atic door-to-door visitation program, inwhich the gospel is presented using tracts.

In addition, Pastor Ulloa uses both theinternet and radio to reach his community. His weekly Bible-teaching program, Espadadel Espíritu, can be heard on Santiago’s107.3 FM and has the potential of reachingsix million people.

The church has taken two importantsteps this year in its organization. It has

I bring this to your attention because I amasking for your prayers and support. To gointo Mexico we stepped out on faith. It wasnot because we had extra money and neededsomewhere to invest it.We went becauseGod called. If you believe in our ministryand you believe in the Great Commission,we need your help!

Most of the children arrived with onlythe clothes on their back.We now have theresponsibility to provide them a loving,Christian home with caring parents, food toeat, clothes to wear and an education. Jamestold us in 2:15-17, “If a brother or sister benaked, and destitute of daily food, And oneof you say unto them, Depart in peace, be yewarmed and filled: notwithstanding ye givethem not those things which are needful tothe body; what doth it profit? Even so faith,if it hath not works, is dead.”This is ourresponsibility.

Our operating budget for the neworphanage is $15,700 per month. That’sonly $16.36 per day per child.Would youhelp me care for these precious childrenwho have no one else? Please designate yourtax-deductible donation ORPHANAGE andmail it in the enclosed self-addressed enve-lope. One day Jesus will say, “Inasmuch as yehave done it unto one of the least of thesemy brethren, ye have done it unto me”(Matthew 25:40).Thank you for servingChrist through kids.

completed its registration with the federalgovernment. This legal process was essentialto its credible existence among the Chileanpeople. Also, the congregation was receivedinto the fellowship of the Association of FreeWill Baptist Churches in Mexico, whichprovides for the people a sense of belongingand fellowship.

Iam so gratefulto the Lord forthe opportuni-

ty to attend theannual BereaMinistries MissionsConference. It wasa precious experi-ence. In spite of thelanguage barrier, I

could feel the presence of God in the meet-ing. It also helped me to understand the phi-losophy of Berea and the way in which fundsare raised to support the work, not only inMexico, but also in other countries.

It was also a blessing to preach in someof the churches in the area. I can assuredlysay the promise o f the Lord in II Corinthians was fulfilled: “Where theSpirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.” It wasso precious to hear the hymns that remindus of the One who gave Himself as ourSavior and to experience the love that wasshown from each one of the brothers that Ihad the opportunity to meet.

I want to give thanks to God for the wayin which He worked it out for me to receivemy travel visa from the US Consulate.Therequirements are quite extensive, and, if thepermission is granted, it usually takes atleast 45 days to receive the visa. I, unfortu-nately, did not get my appointment with theauthorities until September 11. My paper-work was in order and the visa was granted. However, I realized it would be almostimpossible to hope that the visa wouldarrive before the Conference scheduled forSeptember 21-22.

What a miracle that God had gone beforeme! The person that validated my docu-

ments noticed the proposed travel dates. Shetold me the visa could not possibly arrive intime for the trip, and she asked me to wait afew minutes. About 15 minutes later shecame back with my visa. I could not keepthe tears from my eyes out of gratitude toour Lord. For all these things I give a mil-lion thanks to our Lord Jesus Christ.

Guadalupe Macias is our pastor in CiudadVictoria,Tamaulipas where he spends much of histime working with young people. He made hisfirst trip to the United States to be the keynotespeaker at the 2007 Berea Ministries MissionsConference in September.

CURRENT PROJECTS & NEEDSThe work on the James Munsey Memorial

Tabernacle in Reynosa is about to begin. Nearly$30,000 has been raised already for the $40,000project which is scheduled to start in October. PastorMarco Mendoza has conducted several services in theTabernacle in anticipation of making it a fulltime FreeWill Baptist church reaching the community sur-rounding the seminary.

Agenerous friend of the ministry recently donat-ed the last $2,000 that was needed to com-

plete the roof on the Templo Centro de Fe in FelipeCarillo Puerto. The concrete slab should be pouredby the first of the year. President Howard Munseywill lead a Volunteer Construction Team to work onthis Quintano Roo church early in 2008.Thechurch’s pastor is Arnulfo Chablé Valencia.

Pastor Santiago Regalado is looking for $4,000 topour the roof on the Templo Sinai in Monte

Cristal, Nuevo Leon. More than $6,000 has alreadybeen donated to the project. The work, however, is ata standstill until this important phase of constructionis completed.

During the last week of July I mademy first trip to the Republic ofCosta Rica to meet with Pastor

Pablo Fernandez Abarca. I initially came incontact with Pablo through missionaryShane Wilson, who had taught him at theGwen Hendrix Hispanic Bible Institute inInman, SC. Having completed his studies,he returned to Costa Rica to apply for areligious visa so that he could come again tothe United States as a missionary toHispanic peoples. The Lord, however, hadother plans for Pablo.

When he returned he realized that hisown city of Pérez Zeledón was without anyfundamental, Bible-teaching church. Helooked around and saw the plight of his familyand schoolyard buddies: they had no gospelwitness. These were his people. They spokehis language. They lived in the culture of hisbirth. So instead of returning to the U.S.,Pablo chose to stay and plant the first FreeWill Baptist church in Costa Rica.

Today, after only a few months, the twenty-six-year-old pastor is leading more than 150people in services each week. Approximately100 of them worship in a rented buildingacross from the public park in the commu-nity of El Cajon. The congregation hasworked hard to beautify the storefrontbuilding to make it a fitting place for wor-ship. In addition, Pastor Fernandez hasstarted two missions: one in downtownPérez Zeledón and the other in Los Chiles,an outlying farming community.

In addition to his strong pulpit ministry,Pablo is a Bible teacher. Each week he con-

ducts a four-hour Bible institute for his newconverts. The courseof study is an exactreduplication of the two-yearprogram in which he trained in SouthCarolina. One middle-aged man comment-ed that he had learned more about the Biblein these few months than he had in the restof his life attending the Catholic Church.

Pastor Fernandez is making a difference.People are coming to Christ and followingHim in the ordinance of water baptism. OnSeptember 22 the church held its first bap-tismal service in which 18 new convertsparticipated. For more information on sup-porting this new work, please contact me at(423) 318-2202 or email me [email protected].
