* INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY:

In the event of inclement weather, please check the KELO website at

www.KELOLAND.com for cancellation of church.

If you call the church office, 582-3504, there will be a recorded voice-

mail message to keep you informed about services. Pastor and the

Council president will decide prior to 8:00 am on Sunday mornings

regarding weather conditions and worship cancellation.

“Silence and Simplicity”

The wind is blowing hard this January morning. It’s a steady wind of thirty miles an hour blowing light

snow into my face as I stand by myself outside the church office door. It is very mild out still. I am able to

stand for some minutes and face into the wind and just let the small snowflakes hit my face. I feel small, and

yet very much alive. I am impressed with a giant wind and a giant world into which I am placed for a little

while.

Even with the wind whipping the branches of leafless trees together, it is silent. There is a simplicity to

this moment that I need to find more often.

Henri Nouwen, Catholic priest, writer, pastor and friend to the western church, perfectly captures my

need for silence--a silence that will allow the voice of God through the word come to me—in this prayer:

“O Lord Jesus, it is so hard to be silent, silent with my mouth, but even more, silent with my

heart. There is so much talking going on within me. It seems that I am always involved in inner

debates with myself, my friends, my enemies, my supporters, my opponents, my colleagues, and my

rivals. But this inner debate reveals how far my heart is from you. If I were simply to rest at your feet

and realize that I belong to you and you alone, I would easily stop arguing with all the real and

imagined people around me….I know that in the silence of my heart you will speak to me and show me

your love. Give me, O Lord, that silence. Let me be patient and grow slowly into this silence in which

I can be with you. Amen.”

Henri Nouwen, Cry of Mercy

I am praying that we can “grow slowly into a silence” that will settle over Beaver Valley in the coming

weeks. We are not far from the beginning of Lent (Ash Wednesday, March 5th

). The season of Lent is a time in

the church that encourages simplicity. Come straight from work if you need to for simple food, good fellowship

and end of day worship that quietly washes over each person with a kind of silence that God will use….each of

us feeling small, but very much alive as God’s word of grace centers us again.

Will you already this February consider making the Wednesday nights of Lent a priority this year? We

will eat first always this year (5:30-6:30 p.m.--time for more to get off work and get here for a simple supper),

then worship beginning at 6:45 p.m. More details in next month’s newsletter, but for now, my winter day

craving for more gusts of wind and snow and simplicity that keep my mind from too much trouble and worry—

focusing instead upon the privilege and wonder that come with being God’s child alive to live at least one more

day in this worthwhile world.

Blessings

Pastor Greg Johnson

Lent 2014—“God’s Abiding Love”

With our eyes focused upon the spring-time promise of Easter,

we will gather for simple nights of Lenten fellowship. Both in

the breaking of bread and the renewing act of evening worship,

we will be the living Church.

Beginning on Ash Wednesday, March 5th

the Beaver Valley

community will begin the forty day tradition of Lent.

Groups within the church will serve simple meals (5:30 p.m. to

6:30 p.m.).

Evening worship beginning at 6:45 p.m. will help us remember

that it is “God’s Abiding Love” that is our beginning and

ending hope.

Preaching themes delving into the 40 day devotional (daily

bible readings, Henri Nouwen’s meditations and prayers) that

each household in the congregation will be given.

A great time to invite guests to come and experience the humble welcome of our

congregation with childcare provided for those who want to come and see.

More details firmed up in the March newsletter!

Nancy and I wish to say as completely as we can, “thank you!” for such a

kind welcome into the Beaver Valley family of faith. We continue to talk

of the kindness we have experienced already, even yet as we get organized

to begin the physical move from our Tea home of fifteen years into a new (yet to be found acre

to build on?!!) home in the Brandon area.

We want you to know that we are glad to be here. We want you to know that we pray with you

and walk along side and sing with you in this wonderful place!

Joining in the work,

Greg and Nancy Johnson

A Growing Church, A Growing People—

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 19, 7:00 p.m.

“A night of conversation and prayerful reflection about the next steps forward

for our congregation—laying the groundwork for expanded leadership

development and ministry offerings.”

I am the one who, perhaps a bit selfishly, offers an open invitation to the adult members

of Beaver Valley to join in a first night of conversation about the future of Beaver Valley. I say

“selfishly” only because I want to hear more about your dreams and prayers for this congregation

as I yet learn names and get a feel for the talents and treasures of this congregation. I need to

gain more knowledge sooner rather than later as my mind is already thinking of this upcoming

fall and the kinds of ministries that we will be sharing with one another and those whom we

haven’t even met yet.

It is impossible for me to spell out where a night like this will lead. We know we want to

set a course:

+ to confidently and yet humbly grow the faith of this community so that others might

find food for the soul here.

+ to make our case for a “mission developing” or “mission renewal” grant application.

+ to say clearly to one another that people who are renewed and confident in their own

faith are the ones who then share the Good News of Jesus with others (often not even knowing

that they are doing it!)

I am yet working on the framework for the night. I know that we will open with a prayer

and close with a devotion that our conversations will birth. I know that we will challenge one

another to find what it is from our past that we want to hold on to and what from our past can be

left behind. We will listen to one another dream when asked, “What is God doing with us now

and what will Beaver Valley Lutheran look like in five years?” We will importantly “dream big”

as well as then come back to the reality of “starting small” as we make sure that there is a

sustainable pace to the work that we will chart.

I am thankful to those who will change their plans to attend this night. Childcare will be

provided. Coffee and Tea will be available. Come in comfortable clothes. Bring a bible if you

remember to do so.

With you in Ministry,

Pastor Greg

Meals on Wheels for MARCH Once again, Beaver Valley's month to deliver Meals-on-Wheels is March 2014. If you would

like to help with this great service in Brandon a sign up calendar will be posted by the church

office. It only takes about an hour at noon to deliver the meals-and what a great way to help

others! If you have any questions call Beth Flier 582-3326 home 261-3796 cell

~ HOW YOU CAN HELP ~

Beaver Valley delivers meals to Brandon community shut-ins during the months of March, August. During

these months, we are in need of people to help deliver these meals. The meals are picked up at Split Rock

Towers on Teakwood about 11:50 am. The manager needs to be buzzed so you can get into the Towers to get

the red and blue bags from the kitchen. Then they are exchanged for new ones from the driver. There is a list

of names and their addresses with directions on how to get to the houses.

First deliver the meals within the Towers and then deliver the rest of the meals. Depending upon the number of

people receiving meals, it takes approximately 45 minutes to an hour to deliver them. It is a very rewarding

experience and families with children may want to consider making it a family service project before school

starts. Please sign up to help on the bulletin board by the office.
