Our Mission Statement: To GATHER as God’s family, To GROW in Grace, To GO in Faith, Love & Service
THE TIDINGS: A monthly Newsletter for Family & Friends of Beaver Valley March 2016
Easter—Everybody’s Day!
Easter is that miraculous event upon which our lives of faith are built! Already
we find ourselves half way through the preparatory season of Lent. We are learning
something from the voice of St. Paul and the preaching of five local pastors who do their
best to help us awaken to God’s promise that God is alive, and helping us “bear fruit”
in our the middle of our days! We have to believe that what we do matters unto forever.
Easter is about eternal truths.
But Easter is about daily truth and daily living, too. I can write that Easter morning is a time to ponder
new beginnings. It is a time to trust that our weekly confessions of failure and fear are met with the Grand
promise of forgiveness! Forgiveness is that ultimate “reboot” that we all need!
I think we are headed toward a March 27th
, Easter celebration of Forgiveness like none other:
Our many youth have already begun to plan a 7:00 a.m. Easter Sunrise service that lifts up the truth that
“Forgiveness = New Beginnings.” Skits, and prayers and mini-sermons are being written for this
festive, the Son is Rising service. Guitars and trumpets both!
Then, around 8:00 a.m., a hearty Easter breakfast served by the Senior High and Confirmation Youth
and parents. (they wouldn’t mind some help with 20 egg bakes required! Sign-ups will go up in early
March). Your breakfast donations will help many of these youth go to bible and servant camps this
summer.
And then at 9:30 a.m. we will pack our sanctuary to hear the good news that Jesus is risen from the
grave…that as Christ lives, so too shall we live in the kingdom to come.
Now, who else needs to ponder the great power of God who promises all of us a Newness that can
only come as a gift? Who else needs this Easter morning?
At this past February’s Crossroads Conference, “Chili with the Bishop” event, our Bishop David
Zellmer passionately called the members of South Dakota congregations to find our voices of invitation. He
said, “The days of folks just deciding to dress up on a Sunday morning and go and walk into a church to see if
they like a congregation or not are over. In the 1950’s, you built a church building and people joined. Now,
more than ever, people crave a life of faith, but they need inviting.”
I would ask the members of Beaver Valley to humbly invite the “people of peace” in your very midst
who just need someone to say, “If you don’t have plans for Easter morning, I would enjoy your company at
Easter worship and at the breakfast table afterwards.” One just never knows. Sometimes people will even
surprise themselves and say, “You know, I haven’t gone to church in years. I would love to go with you and
see if Easter can be my day again.”
Those would be good words to hear, because new beginnings are for everyone.
Blessings,
Pastor Greg Johnson
-YOUTH ALIVE!!--
Our Sunday School program is really up and running as we now
look ahead to the Easter Season. All families should be mindful of
the special March 20th
, Palm Sunday Worship service. All of our
kids will be involved in the opening of worship—palm branches and
larger than normal children’s sermon at the opening—then Faith
Family Style Sunday School to follow for everyone after worship! The kids will go home with little
flower pots full of seeds to water and watch into April and May!
We are going to try something new! Starting on Sunday, March 6, we’re going to put an offering
basket at the front on the front steps of the church, so that are children can in yet another way feel
involved in Sunday worship
Our eleven confirmation youth are busy this Lenten Season. They went on the
Inspiration Hills bible camp Youth Retreat (along with Sr. High youth) on Feb. 21
with Pastor Greg, Derek Hanson, Winston Loman and Amanda Petrik as adult
advisors. They did great work with the topic of “Forgiveness,” and then had fun in
the huge game room! They served, along with the Senior High, the Lenten supper
on Wednesday, Feb. 24th
. Thanks everyone for making great Tacos!
The Lenten worship unit, “Bearing Fruit” continues into Holy Week. Easter papers will be due
by class time on April 6th
. The confirmation class will be helping put on the Easter Sunrise worship
and breakfast on March 27th
.
Senior High
Senior High youth continue to meet on Sunday mornings after worship.
They are planning:
Easter Sunrise Service with breakfast to follow.
Summer Trip - allow for some group building, retreat time all on a budget
and in a time frame that even kids who have summer jobs can participate in.
A Game Night (invite another youth group?) yet this winter.
March 1, Tuesday, 3:00 pm – ELCA Pastors’ Text Study Pastors from six area congregations meet in the Beaver Valley Lutheran kitchen for a weekly study of the texts
for the coming Sunday’s preaching task. This weekly gathering not only helps prepare each preacher to leave
and get started on the work of sermon writing, but it also helps keep our rural congregations in concert with
one another’s activities as well as the work of the broader work of the ELCA in the Sioux Falls area.
March 2, Wednesday, 5:30/6:30 p.m.—Lenten meal and worship Our mid-week Lenten round robin preaching series continues on this Wednesday night. The Adult Choir serves
the 5:30 p.m. meal and Pastor Scott Hackler will be our guest preacher helping us consider this year’s theme,
“Bearing Fruit.”
March 3, Thursday, 6:00 pm – St. Dysmas Worship at the SD Penitentiary A group of fourteen Beaver Valley members will be attending worship at the SD State Penitentiary on this
Thursday evening. Pastor Bob Chell will lead us in worship as we then join in fellowship time with many
inmates before we leave after worship.
March 3, Thursday, 10:00 am & 6 pm - Parent and Me “Sing and
Sprout” Music Class New for this year is that a second, evening Sing and Sprout class
has been added! For those who don’t know, this Christian based class helps children “move
and groove, shake and shimmy and learn about God through music.” Each week students will
get to play with a new musical instrument and learn memory Bible Verses, along with other
new and traditional songs. Sing n' Sprout is an 8 week class, which will meet at two different
times on Thursdays at Beaver Valley. It is for children 6 months to five years in age. The cost
of the class is $40 for first child and $35 for any additional children. For more information please call or text
Sara at 605-951-6171 or E-mail at [email protected]. We look forward to spending time with you
and our little sprouts!
March 9, Wednesday, 5:30/6:30 p.m.—Lenten meal and worship Our mid-week Lenten round robin preaching series continues on this Wednesday night. The ‘Faith’ PLG serves

present to the council should be made known to church council president, Georgia Backer
at any time.
March 12, Saturday, 9 a.m. -Small Group Book Club meets in Garretson Join us for a fun hour at Annie’s Coffee Shop in Garretson. It is very informal and we meet monthly at 9 am on
the second Saturday of the month. Come suggest your favorite books and bring your friends. (Don’t’ have to
read a book to attend.) We look forward to seeing you there.
March 13, Sunday, 9:30 am – New members received during Sunday

On Sunday, March 13 the second PLG, the HOPE group, will be asked to meet at 10:50 a.m. They will look
out over April, May and June of 2016 and consider the life of our parish. Leaders will be asked to step forward
to be the contact person(s) when parish life events and needs arise or are formulated by the group themselves.
At this meeting we will make sure that we have good contact information within the group itself. We will make
sure that every household within that group during that three month period of time is specifically invited into
the joyous, often servant work of Beaver Valley. Below, the names of households in the new HOPE Parish Life
Group are listed.
“Beaver Valley Alive!”—Update
“Beaver Valley Alive,” a capital campaign in recognition of Beaver Valley Lutheran’s 150th
Anniversary, was presented at this year’s Annual Meeting. The response that I received, along with church
council members, was overwhelmingly positive.
The next step in consideration of whether or not to formally approve this three-phase, $100,000 capital
campaign happens at the church council’s retreat on February 28th
. If the church council members are willing to
provide substantial material and spiritual support for this campaign, then a date will be set for a complete
presentation of the proposal to the congregation for its approval yet this late-winter.
Your continued prayers over the ministry goals of our congregation are much needed.
Blessings,
Pastor Greg Johnson

had by all.
Pastor Greg’s Report:
February is proving to be a very busy month with important and different ministry events happening. I have
been busy with:
Welcoming Cathy Roberts into the flow of the office. She is a wonderful, new addition to the daily life
of our parish. She is catching on fast and doing good work.
Worship planning and sermon writing is taking some serious time! I am happy with the Lenten Round
Robin preaching series: “Bearing Fruit.” Having five pastors involved I trust will be a good thing for
our parish as we get to hear the broader voice of the church as we work with the teachings that come to
us through the book of Colossians.
I am looking forward to the February 21st, Confirmation/Senior High Youth Mini-retreat at
Inspiration Hills Bible Camp.
I look forward to the beginning of new member classes (Tuesday, Feb 23rd
) and continue to reach out to
prospective new members and, when possible, make home visits.
I am hopeful that the Feb 13th
“Celebrating Love” night will help us grow further in our understanding
of the importance of fellowship and hospitality. A nice mix of long-time and new members and even a
few guests will add to the meaning of the night.
I have found few congregations that have done anything formal with developing new wedding
guidelines for their parishes in light of the recent Supreme Court decisions.
I hope that we can have our congregation represented at the upcoming “Chili with the Bishop” event on
Thursday, Feb 18th
, at 5:30 pm at St John’s Lutheran in Sioux Falls ( I will be there for the first hour and
then get out to BV for the women’s Gather Bible Study).
I intend to attend the March 29-30th
SD Synod Pastor’s Conference in Brookings.
I ask for Sunday, April 17th
as a vacation Sunday. I will find pulpit supply for this Holy Communion
Sunday. Possibly, Jess from Table of Grace in Harrisburg, the new startup Lutheran/Presbyterian
church
Planning a Council retreat on Feb 28th
.
MMSC: Motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Janet Andersen and seconded by Doris Phillips.
Motion carried.
Respectfully submitted,
Georgia Backer, Council President
Your help is needed!
Beaver Valley delivers meals to Brandon community shut-ins
during the months of March and August. During these months,
we are in need of people to help deliver these meals. The meals
are picked up at Split Rock Towers on Teakwood about 11:50
am. The manager needs to be buzzed so you can get into the
Towers to get the red and blue bags from the kitchen. Then they
are exchanged for new ones from the driver. There is a list of
names and their addresses with directions on how to get to the
houses.
First deliver the meals within the Towers and then deliver the
rest of the meals. Depending upon the number of people receiv-
ing meals, it takes approximately 45 minutes to an hour to deliver them.
It is a very rewarding experience and families with children may want to consider making it
a family service project before school starts. Please sign up to help on the bulletin board by the
church office.
Beaver Valley’s month to deliver Meals-on-Wheels is MARCH 2016. If you would like to help
with this great service in Brandon, a sign up calendar will be posted by the church office. It only
takes about an hour at noon to deliver the meals, and this is a great opportunity to help others!
