This Sunday is “Pennies To Heaven,” our annual summer fund raiser, chicken BBQ and family carnival.

This Saturday evening, beginning after the 4:30 p.m. Mass, the Theme Basket Tent will open for those who would like to purchase tickets for these great baskets. Chicken dinner tickets will also be available, as well as tickets for tomorrow’s raffles.

On Sunday, beginning at the 8:00 a.m. Mass, you can drop off your loose change on the front sidewalk of the Basilica. After each of the Sunday morning Masses, coffee and donuts will be served under the tents behind the Basilica.

Beginning at 8:00 a.m. on Sunday, you will be able to purchase tickets for the chicken BBQ dinner (which will begin to be served at 1:00 p.m.), as well as tickets for theme baskets, raffles, carnival games, bounce house, hot dogs and hamburgers, snow cones, popcorn, nachos and karaoke.

We will also do two tours of the Basilica on Sunday, at 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.

All in all, it promises to be a very fine day. Come and join the fun!

This Sunday, our parish and all of the parishes of the diocese, will take up the annual Diocesan Priests Retirement collection. This collection is used to help defray the cost of medical care for our retired priests. There is a special envelope in your packet for this collection. You may use this envelope for the next four weeks. As our retired priests grow older, costs for their medical care continues to rise. Your contribution to this collection will help care for those priests who have served the diocese so well over the past many years, and now need our help in caring for them in their old age.

Looking ahead into the month of August: Please note that Wednesday, August 15, is the Feast of the Assumption, a holy day of obligation. Check the bulletin for the schedule of Masses for that day.

We are looking for people who would like to be trained as Basilica tour guides. Some of our present tour guides are no longer able to serve in this capacity. We will train you. You can let us know when and how often you are able to do this. If you are interested, please call my Administrative Assistant, Dianne Bosinski, who coordinates our tour guides and schedules Basilica tours.

Just a reminder: Voting is not just a right. It is one of our most important responsibilities. To vote in the September Primary Elections, you must be affiliated with a specific party. New York State Primaries will be held on Thursday, September 13. General Election is scheduled for Tuesday, November 6. You can visit htts://www.elections.ny.gov/ for more information and on-line voter registration forms.

May Jesus bless you and Our Lady of Victory watch over you.

Sacrament of Baptism: Our Parish offers a special Pre-Baptism preparation program for parents who desire to share their faith with their children. Parents-to-be must attend this class prior to the birth of their child. Baptisms are usually scheduled two times each month. Call the Rectory to register for classes. Godparents must be Confirmed and practicing Catholics. Non-parishioners are required to have a Letter of Recommendation to serve as a sponsor.

Sacrament of Marriage:

To be married in the Basilica, you must be an active parishioner for at least 9 months prior to setting a date. Engaged couples should contact the pastor before making other wedding arrangements. Couples are required to attend a Pre-Cana Conference, or equivalent pre-marriage preparation program.

Letters of Recommendation:

Recommendations to act as sponsors for Baptism or Confirmation can be issued only to registered members of Our Lady of Victory Parish who have received the Sacrament of Confirmation, attend Mass and receive Holy Communion regularly, have their children attending a Catholic school or Religious Education class. If married, the marriage must be in conformity with the regulations of the Catholic Church.

Devotions:

Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament begins immediately after the 12:10 p.m. Mass in the Basilica on Fridays and concludes with Benediction at 5:00 p.m.

First Friday:

On the eve of the First Friday of each month there are confessions from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. Mass is celebrated at 7:30 p.m. on First Friday.

Care of the Sick:

Please notify the rectory office for a visit to any family member who is sick, in the hospital or confined to home. Regular home Communion visits are usually on the First Friday of the month by a priest, deacon, or minister of the Eucharist.

Tours:

To schedule a tour of Our Lady of Victory Basilica, please contact Dianne Bosinski, Tours & Basilica Programs by email at [email protected] or by phone at (716) 828-9424.

Summary of the Readings Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

We are so busy! Most of us have more than one job to do, and we never seem to have enough time. We are workers, volunteers, parents, friends, and most of us are more than one thing at a time. But which of these is the work of God?

We seldom view our ordinary work as being the work of God. We may think that we have to be ministers or priests, missionaries or charity workers, engaged full-time in works formally identified as being “God’s work.” But everything we do with a faithful heart and with love for others is God’s work. We each have our own role to fill in the world, and many gifts are necessary. We cannot always see the direct connection of our daily work to the plan of God. But we trust and we believe that God leads us to do what is needed, where it is needed. What is “God’s work?” “This is the work of God, that you believe in the one he sent” (John 6:29). Adult Confirmation Classes

There are many adult Catholics who have not been Confirmed. Besides the fact that they have not been received into the full initiation of the Catholic faith, it becomes a problem when they want to serve as godparents/sponsors for Baptism/Confirmation. If you are a practicing adult Catholic (that is, go to Communion, and if married, married according to the rite of the Catholic Church) and have completed high school (high school students should be in our teen Confirmation program) consider attending the five catechism-review classes and receive the Sacrament of Confirmation from Bishop Richard Malone in the Fall. The tentative date for beginning these five classes is Thursday, August 16, from 7:00 to 8:15 p.m. in the Marian Room on the lower level of the Basilica. Please register by calling Father Romulus at 828-9425.

Life in the Spirit Seminar

Would you like to experience more of the Holy Spirit’s power and gifts in your life? Fan into flame the Holy Spirit you received at Baptism and Confirmation. Life in the Spirit Seminar, sponsored by Charismatic Renewal, Diocese of Buffalo; Magnificat/Buffalo Chapter; and Our Lady of Victory Altar & Rosary Society will be held at Our Lady of Victory School Cafeteria on 7 consecutive Friday evenings September 28 to November 9 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. For more information or to text registration, contact: Sandy Swiech at 716-864-5583 (cell); 716-648-5870 (home); or [email protected]; or call Evelyn at 652-2286. Cost: $20 donation. Checks payable to Charismatic Renewal. Please RSVP by September 21.

Our Lady of Victory National Shrine and Basilica’s weekly bulletin can be viewed online. Visit the parish website at www.ourladyofvictory.org. Go to Masses and Sacraments, then click on Weekly Bulletin and select the date of the bulletin you wish to view.

Vocation Thought Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Jesus is for us the bread from heaven, which will never leave us hungry. How is Jesus asking you to help His people seek and find the bread that they are longing for? If God is calling you to a Church vocation, call Father Andrew Lauricella at 716-847-5535. Also, check out the “Priest of the Month” stories at www.buffalovocations.org.

Golden and Diamond Wedding Anniversaries

The Diocese of Buffalo will honor couples celebrating their 50th, 60th, or 70th wedding anniversary this year with a special Mass, celebrated by Bishop Malone, on Sunday, October 14, at 10:30 a.m. in St. Joseph’s Cathedral, 50 Franklin Street, Buffalo. During the Mass couples will renew their marriage vows. Following Mass, formal pictures of the anniversary couples will be taken with Bishop Malone in the Lady Chapel located to the left of the main altar in St. Joseph’s Cathedral.

If you are celebrating your 50th, 60th or 70th wedding anniversary this year and would like to attend the Mass at St. Joseph Cathedral, please complete the following form and return it to the Rectory by Tuesday, September 4.

Updates Wanted

Did you move? Are you moving soon? Did your phone number change since you registered? Are you new to the parish and not registered? Are your envelopes not coming to your home? Do you have any changes in your family status? Are you a newlywed planning to remain in the parish?

If you answered YES to any of these questions, please call the rectory (828-9444) and help us to update our records. Often mail is returned to us because of an incorrect address and this is costly to the parish.

Also, be sure to use your envelopes so that we can give you proper credit for your participation and financial support. This is important for your year end income tax preparation and also so that we can provide you with a letter of recommendation if you are asked to be a sponsor.

Thank you for your help in keeping our parish records accurate!
