A Message from the Pastor
First, I want to give you an update on the Basilica Roof & Storm Drain System Restoration Project. The work is almost complete. To date we raised $44,089.00 to meet the $100,000.00 cost for the restoration project. I am deeply grateful to everyone who has donated to the project thus far. Please know that every gift makes a difference. I appreciate every donation to assist us in this necessary project.
Second, you will notice there is work being done at the Boiler House. This project has been undertaken by Homes of Charity and is being managed by our new Director of Facilities, Yordan Kovatchki. The Boiler House Window Replacement Project began the week of October 7. Roof replacement will be completed first before the windows are installed. Asbestos removal began the week of October 14 and the installation of new windows will be completed by November 30. I am deeply grateful to all who are working on this project as we maintain and beautify our Basilica properties.
This Friday, November 1, we will celebrate All Saints’ Day, a holy day of obligation. Please consult the bulletin for Mass times. The day is dedicated to the saints of the Church, that is, all those who have attained heaven. “All Saints is a time to pause and reflect on all those holy women and men who have come before us–and who live among us. We recognize that as one People of God, we go to God together, praying for one another, learning from the example, the wisdom of those who have lived the Gospel.” (CRS.org/resource-center)
I share with you this reflection on All Saints’ Day from Faithcatholic.com:
The solemnity of All Saints invites us to incorporate a broader vision into our lives and to have faith in a happier future. The readings remind us to keep the end in mind–to live each day of our lives with heaven as our goal.
In the first reading (Revelation 7:2-4, 9-14), John saw a great multitude of people, who had been marked with the seal (chosen by God). They were joined by people of every nation, race and tongue. All were dressed in white robes and carried palm branches–symbols of joy and victory. They had been washed in the blood of the Lamb and were singing of God’s salvation. No one in this multitude had been perfect, no one had been free from hardships; indeed, some had died for their faith. They had survived the time of great distress.
In our darkest moments, then, perhaps it is vital to remember that we, too, will survive any time of great distress. First and foremost, as we heard in the first reading, God loves us so much that He calls us His children. The psalmist reminds us that we “long to see God’s face,” and John assures us that we will.
How can we reach this happy end? Christ, Himself, offers us a model of holiness–He was subjective to the will of the Father, humble of heart, steadfast in prayer and impoverished of possessions. In the Beatitudes, Christ gave the poor of His time a glimpse of eternal life and offers us, too, that same path to happiness. Those who wish to enter the reign of God are to be poor in spirit, pure of heart and lowly; they will hunger and thirst for holiness, they will show mercy and they will seek peace. Even in their mourning, they will be consoled; even when they are insulted and persecuted, they will rejoice because their reward will be great in heaven.

Sacrament of Baptism: Our Parish offers a special Pre-Baptism preparation program for parents who desire to share their faith with their children. Parents-to-be must attend this class prior to the birth of their child. Baptisms are usually scheduled two times each month. Call the Rectory to register for classes. Godparents must be Confirmed and practicing Catholics. Non-parishioners are required to have a Letter of Recommendation to serve as a sponsor.
Sacrament of Marriage:
To be married in the Basilica, you must be an active parishioner for at least 9 months prior to setting a date. Engaged couples should contact the pastor before making other wedding arrangements. Couples are required to attend a Pre-Cana Conference, or equivalent pre-marriage preparation program.
Letters of Recommendation:
Recommendations to act as sponsors for Baptism or Confirmation can be issued only to registered members of Our Lady of Victory Parish who have received the Sacrament of Confirmation, attend Mass and receive Holy Communion regularly, have their children attending a Catholic school or Religious Education class. If married, the marriage must be in conformity with the regulations of the Catholic Church.
Devotions:
Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament begins immediately after the 12:10 p.m. Mass in the Basilica on Fridays and concludes with Benediction at 5:00 p.m.
First Friday:
On the eve of the First Friday of each month there are confessions from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. Mass is celebrated at 7:30 p.m. on First Friday.
Care of the Sick:
Please notify the rectory office for a visit to any family member who is sick, in the hospital or confined to home. Regular home Communion visits are usually on the First Friday of the month by a priest, deacon, or minister of the Eucharist.
Tours:
To schedule a tour of Our Lady of Victory Basilica, please contact Dianne Bosinski, Tours & Basilica Programs by email at [email protected] or by phone at (716) 828-9424.
Summary of the Readings Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Today’s readings invite us into prayer, into relationship with God. Because relationships feel more natural when we know one another well, Sirach encourages us to know God better. In his wisdom, Sirach tells us what God is like: fair, open-minded, compassionate, and attentive. “The Lord will not delay,” he says. Knowing that God’s help comes right on time, whenever we need it, calms our hearts and helps us trust the Lord. In his second Letter to Timothy, Saint Paul demonstrates his own trust in God. Despite the grueling struggles Saint Paul has faced because of his Christian faith, he praises the Lord for rescuing him time and again. Today’s Gospel draws us close to Jesus too, revealing his special love for the poor and humble. As Jesus tells his parable about the prayer habits of a Pharisee and a tax collector, our hearts long to become as gentle as Christ’s. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Message from the Pastor (Continued from Page 2)
Too often, we can become so focused on our own troubles that we miss the bigger picture. We forget the “second act” of our life with God–eternal life with Him in heaven. All the saints we honor today–known to us or yet to be known–have endured to the end. They have joined the heavenly multitude. The saints remind us that following the Gospel message is possible. Pray to them that God may give us the grace to endure to the end, for our reward will be great in heaven.
Happy Feast of All Saints to all you “saints” in the making! God bless you and grant you His peace!
Gratefully, Fr. David
School News
Pope Francis says, “The name of God is mercy.” Here at Our Lady of Victory School, each morning we meet face to face as a school family for morning announcements and daily prayer and pledge. We often talk about the ways we may show mercy to one another as we go about our day. To show mercy means to be gentle and forgiving to someone who has done something wrong. It also means showing kindness to those who are suffering or are victims of misfortune. We have wonderful students who work hard to live this each and every day. As I walk throughout the hallways, I often see students giving comfort to others when they are upset. Students who see someone sitting alone at lunch, getting up from their seat to sit next to them so they won’t be alone. I witness our older students holding the hands of their little buddies as they go to church each Friday. They sit patiently with them to show them when to stand and sit, when to sing, and so much more. Our Lady of Victory School is a special family. I know Jesus is smiling down.

We welcome Rudolph Anthony DeMarco III and Veronica Beau Froebel into our Parish Community. They were baptized on Sunday, October 20, 2019 in Our Lady of Victory Basilica.
Living Rosary ~ Monday, October 28
The OLV Altar & Rosary Society will again sponsor a Living Rosary this Monday, October 28, at 7:00 p.m. in the Basilica. Everyone, especially Altar & Rosary Society Members, are invited to join in the presentation. We would like each parish organization to be represented. We need at least 60 people to voice an individual prayer, while holding a candle. The rosary is a powerful prayer to Our Lady. For more information, please contact Mary Anne Jackson at 864-0747.
Pro-Life
We continue to follow the timeline of Mary’s pregnancy with Jesus. Week 32: Baby’s feet are now about 2-1/2 inches long. Breathing motions are increasingly common and help in lung and chest development for breathing after birth. Filtration units inside the kidneys have now stopped forming. The human body will be incapable of producing more ever again. Baby now weighs about 4 pounds and is the size of a squash.
Care for Creation Suggestions to Help Care for our Common Home
Water saving tips for residences: Take shorter showers. Reducing a 10-minute shower to 5 minutes will save 12.5 gallons of water if the showerhead has a flow rate of 2.5 gallons per minute. Replace showerheads that have a flow rate greater than 2.5 gallons per minute. The U.S. EPA WaterSense program labels efficient showerheads that use a maximum 2.0 gallons per minute.
