This weekend we celebrate the Solemnity of Pentecost. This is the feast that gave birth to the Church through the power of the Holy Spirit. As we celebrate the birth of the Church we celebrate the power of the Holy Spirit who dwells in our hearts and we give thanks for being members of the Body of Christ that brings us salva on and the promise of sharing eternal life with the Lord in glory. We pray that the Holy Spirit will con nue to pour out his gi s upon the Church so that we are able to con nue our proclama on of the Gospel and thereby lead others to the salva on that is found in the person of Jesus Christ. In a recent homily, our Holy Father, Pope Francis, noted that the Holy Spirit is “God ac ve in us” and that the Holy Spirit con nually renews us. According to the Holy Father, Pope Francis:
Then the Holy Spirit renews – guides and renews – renews the earth. The Psalmist says: ‘You send forth your Spirit… and you renew the face of the earth’ (Ps 103:30). The account of the birth of the Church in the Acts of the Apostles is significantly linked to this Psalm, which is a great hymn of praise to God the Creator. The Holy Spirit whom Christ sent from the Father, and the Creator Spirit who gives life to all things, are one and the same. Respect for crea on, then, is a requirement of our faith: the ‘garden’ in which we live is not entrusted to us to be exploited, but rather to be cul vated and tended with respect (cf. Gen 2:15). Yet this is possible only if Adam – the man formed from the earth – allows himself in turn to be renewed by the Holy Spirit, only if he allows himself to be re-formed by the Father on the model of Christ, the new Adam. In this way, renewed by the Spirit, we will indeed be able to experience the freedom of the sons and daughters, in harmony with all crea on. In every creature we will be able to see reflected the glory of the Creator, as another Psalm says: ‘How great is your name, O Lord our God, through all the earth!’ (Ps 8:2, 10). He guides, he renews and he gives; he gives fruits.
The Holy Spirit connects us to the power of God’s grace that is at work within the Church. As members of the Body of Christ, we are charged to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ through the witness of our lives. As we conclude the Easter season, we con nue to celebrate the gi of new life, won for us through the death and resurrec on of Christ, and the ongoing renewal of the Church.
Benedict XVI, spoke of the Feast of Pentecost in this way:
This is the mystery of Pentecost: the Holy Spirit illuminates the human spirit and, by revealing Christ Crucified and Risen, indicates the way to become more like him, that is, to be ‘the image and instrument of the love which flows from Christ.’
We pray that we will use wisely the gi s of the Holy Spirit given us at bap sm and strengthened in Confirma on so that we will be able to be ambassadors of Christ in the world. In our Gospel reading from Saint John for the Mass of Pentecost, the Lord Jesus tells his first disciples: "When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who comes from the Father, he will tes fy on my behalf. You also are to tes fy because you have been with me from the beginning” (15:26-27). May the Church founded by Jesus Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit con nue to be an instrument of God’s love, truth, and mercy in our world and may the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church, intercede for us.
As we celebrate the Solemnity of Pentecost and the conclusion of the Easter season, the message of Jesus in John’s Gospel comes to us from his appearance to the disciples following his resurrec on from the dead: “Peace be with you” (20:19). The Lord’s gi of peace is that which we all long for in our lives. The gi of the Holy Spirit gave birth to the Church that Jesus Christ himself founded. As members of his Church we are charged to con nue the work of Jesus in the world: “As the Father has sent me, so I send you” (20:21). Jesus has returned to the Father and is seated at

his right hand. Sending forth the Holy Spirit, the Lord makes room for all of us to carry out his mission and to do his work in this world.
During the Easter season we have been reflec ng upon the meaning of the risen life of Jesus in our own lives. The central message of Chris anity is the resurrec on of Jesus from the dead; this is what our faith is all about. As we do the work of Jesus in the world we bring the message of the risen Lord to all whom we meet: “Peace be with you.” The gi of peace is something that we help to take root in the hearts of others through our willingness to forgive, to be healers of broken hearts, and by le ng go anger, jealousy, self-centeredness, and opening our hearts to the gi s of the Holy Spirit so that they may shine forth in our lives. To receive the gi s of the Holy Spirit means that we are able to love in the same way that God loves us. For us, it is a difficult and o en demanding task but it is the means through which we work out our own salva on with the help of the Holy Spirit who never fails us in our need.
Pentecost reminds us of the importance of the presence of the Church in the world as she proclaims the gospel of Jesus Christ and celebrates the sacraments of salva on through the power of the Holy Spirit. The Church is imperfect and flawed always in need of renewal but she is s ll, at core, a body of grace-filled believers which makes Christ present through the power of the Holy Spirit. We, each as individuals, are members of the Body of Christ and have the special call to foster the communion of the Church so that we live in unity and peace with one another. The outpouring of the seven-fold gi s of the Holy Spirit, wisdom, understanding, counsel, for tude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord, give us all of the strength to help others know the peace that is found in serving the Lord Jesus and of the joy that comes from the hope of the eternal life he has won for us.

Thank you to all of those who made our annual Tricky Tray, held at The Bethwood on May 4th, such a success. I want to especially thank Ralph and Brenda Miller, Valerie Arrabito, Mary Fierro and all of the members of the Tricky Tray Commi ee for their hard work and dedica on to this important parish fundraiser. A special word of thanks to our confirma on candidates for helping us to distribute the prizes won to the recipients on the night of the Tricky Tray. They did a great job! A special word of thanks to:
Commi ee Valerie Arrabito – Donna Bradley – Kathy Bruno – Carol Cullen
Mary Fierro – Sue Ann Jones – Anne e Kostroski Brenda and Ralph Miller – Janet Lee and John O’Donnell
Volunteers Amy Ambrosio – Sue Bertsch – Silvio Cinquino – Joanne Hoffman

It takes a great deal of work, countless hours, and blood, sweat, and tears to make fundraisers like the Tricky Tray happen. I am indebted to all the members of the Tricky Tray Commi ee who spend countless, countless hours preparing for a wonderful evening that really helps us to meet our parish budget. These are the unsung heroes of the parish who work quietly and faithfully to keep us going. It is not too much of an exaggera on to say that without them we would not be here. Of course it is a constant struggle to keep the parish afloat financially, you know that, and you are always generous and I am always grateful. There is no subs tute for the involvement of parishioners in making events like the Tricky Tray happen. If there is a failure in recrui ng new members for such endeavors the fault is all my own and it is really a failure of my own leadership. And so I ask you to please be in touch with me if you would consider serving on the Tricky Tray Commi ee. If you were to compare this year’s list of commi ee members and volunteers with last year’s you would no ce that this year’s list is markedly shorter. Your help is needed so please think of being part of this commi ee where you will meet wonderful people and where you will be ac vely involved in keeping the parish alive and vibrant. There is only so much me and energy that people have. I know that. But if there are many people involved, the work is lighter and it is much easier to accomplish. Please give this request some serious thought.

To be and not to do - that is the challenge for most of us. We want quiet but when we have it we are at a loss how to deal with the deeper dimension of silence. Silence, which is the key to the contemplative side in each of us, that is the key to consenting to the indwelling Spirit...a path through centering prayer and beyond.
