Get ready to reel one in! Each June, MCASF members head to Ocean Reef Club, Key Largo, for the Association’s Annual Fishing Tournament and Family Gathering.
If you’ve never participated in the tourney, you should know that this event truly is a “family gathering.” Activities for the kids will be offered on Friday evening during the cocktail reception, so that both you and your little ones can have a great time. Plus there are many activities for kids of all ages (even great big kids!) to enjoy at Ocean Reef, including paddle boats, water sports, crafts and of course some serious construction projects... sand castles! Ocean Reef also has a wonderful spa, and countless ways to simply kick back and relax. All this and more turns our tourney into a family getaway. Gather up your team, friends, family, and your special clients and get ready to unwind in a place that’s nearby, but feels far away.
Please see page 12 for more details!
If you have never participated in this event, call Event Chairman Wayne Masur at 954.328.6788 to find out all about the great food, camaraderie, and relaxing atmosphere that await you. A registration form is included in this issue on page 13 or register at www.mcasf.org.

In the last year, your Board of Directors and I have been working hard to create some new initiatives to build upon our strengths, and train up our future leaders through the creation of several new programs.
First, we created the MCASF Safety Committee. Led by Chairman Dave Lockhart of Poole & Kent of Florida and Vice Chair Debra Tambaschi of Trane, the Committee also includes Danny Gosiker, Airtech; Phil Rodin, ARPEC; and Charles Jackson, John J. Kirlin, LLC.
This group met every month last year – sometimes twice a month – to get up and running. Their passion for employee safety led them to create the MCASF Safety Excellence Awards Program and plan for many more pro-grams that will help improve the quality of the workplace for all of us.
I’m also proud of our MCASF Young Professionals program, which we created to help promote and develop leadership among our indus-try's up-and-coming young professionals. Throughout the year, we’ve given them oppor-tunities to learn from our local industry’s leading execu-tives by exposing them to new experiences. They, in turn, have given us opportunities to learn from them. On behalf of the Board, I’d like to commend this group of young people, and I’d like to encourage each of you to take the time to get to know the young folks in your company and listen
to their perspective – it may really surprise you.
Get to know our Young Professionals – we expect great things from them in the future! Led by Chairman Weston Gunnarson of Hill York and Vice Chair Jason Padilla of Poole & Kent of Florida, the Committee also includes Tim Gill, John J. Kirlin, LLC; Chris Figueras, Airtech; Teresa Roberts, Edd Helms Group; Sam Martin, Weathertrol; Scott Rist, Shoreline Air Systems; Chris Mattson, Hill York; and Alex Jimenez, CoolBreeze.
The Young Professionals have been developing a new Student Chapter at Florida International University, and I'm happy to report that the Mechanical Contractors Association of America has approved the Charter.
I commend all of our Young Professionals for their work in establishing this new chapter, especially Alex Jimenez and Weston Gunnarson who, just a few years ago, served as the President of the University of
Florida Student Chapter.I’m very pleased with this
new program. Perhaps, in the near future, we may host a few FIU students at our mem-ber luncheons. I hope you’ll take a moment to talk with them about the opportunities our industry represents. The MCASF Board sees this as yet another way to bring tal-ent and strength to our local industry.
Finally, your Board of Directors has held our 2010 Strategic Planning meeting. Our vision for the Association is that MCASF will play such a valuable role that mechanical service and construction con-tractors will find it is a busi-ness necessity to belong and participate. As our Strategic Plan takes shape, we will share it with you through our web-site. I invite and challenge each of you to participate in our upcoming events, contribute your strengths and apply your skills towards making our MCASF vision a reality!
Our vision for the Association is that
MCASF will play such a valuable role that mechanical service and construction
contractors will find it is a business
necessity to belong and participate.

ARPEC Director-in-training Phil Rodin will become ARPEC Director July 17 upon the retirement of Director Art Warren, but he already has exciting plans for the pro-gram and a healthy respect for the people and traditions that have preceded him.
“My goal is to make our school the number one school in the country," says Phil. "We’re all tremendously proud of our school, and that’s understandable. But my goal is to try to reach even higher and pro-duce an even better product. Essentially, our union is a business, and our customer is the contractor. We’re supposed to be the best – do it faster and do it right the first time. The Journeyman's performance is a prod-uct of the school – it's a reflection on the school and on our instructors."
As a youngster, Phil watched his uncle work and developed an interest in the industry in part because it would serve him in pursuing his life goals.
“I had an uncle who worked for Pepsi-Cola," explains Phil. "He worked on the soda pop machines – the old kind that dropped a cup and mixed the syrup with the soda before dispensing it in the cup. I used to help my uncle change out the com-pressors and ice machines in those units. I went through the Journeyman training in Local Union 638B out of Long Island City, New York and turned out in 1976. I wanted a good salary, and I wanted a nice house where my wife Doreen and I could raise our kids."
Since then, Phil has developed a unique skill set with former positions as a fire department lieutenant and chief in New York and, more recently, as Coral Springs Battalion Chief, plus 10 years of service as an ARPEC teacher and a position with Southeastern Chillers as a manager.
"I’ve come full circle," he says, "and now I have the opportunity to head up a school such as ours that will enable future young people to build a good career and a good lifestyle for themselves and their families."
"Contractors need quality personnel," he adds. "If the school can produce high quality graduates, contractors will be better posi-tioned to make more money. The bottom line is, if contractors aren’t making money, they can’t put union members to work."
Phil has a variety of ideas and plans already in mind for his first year on the job.
"In the future, I hope to incorporate more diversification in our training at the school," he explains. "I’d like to help our contrac-tors reach some untapped markets. With the Education Committee’s backing, I hope to begin training on heating equipment. The equipment is out there – why shouldn’t we be the ones to work on it? The more diversified our Journeymen are, the more money they can make the contractor, and so the more they’re worth."
"I plan to establish more journeymen classes to keep our journeymen up-to-date and marketable," he continues. "Years ago, mechanical contracting was far simpler. For example, journeymen – at least on the ser-vice side – could get by with knowing the ins and outs of a fan motor and capacitor. Today, even high-end residential units have a solid state board and many require a laptop for proper testing. Some of our journeymen aren’t familiar with the more high-tech side of the industry, so it’s important for them to get that training to stay up-to speed."
While the last few months have been a whirlwind for Phil, he's made it a priority to try find time to observe students in the
classroom to gain an understanding of their experience with the program. He will also be working with the Education Committee to ensure that the curriculum is up-to-date and being followed.
Finally, Phil wants to assure everyone that his door is always open to students and contractors alike.
"I’d like contractors to feel that they have an open line of communication with me," he says. "I want to improve communi-cation between the school, the contractors and the men. The school has already begun sending out its own updates via e-mail, and the response has been very, very favor-able."

I'm delighted to report that Ernesto Olivaof DebonAir Mechanical won the RegionalDistrict 3 HVAC Competition inCharleston, South Carolina on June 12.Ernesto faced some very talented competi-tors — competition included the "best ofthe best" from 13 states in District 3.According to those organizing the competi-tion, our district contest was the mostwidely attended in the nation, with severalhundred people in attendance. Ernesto willtravel to Ann Arbor, Michigan on August 9thto face competitors from across the USA &Canada. We're all so proud of Ernesto, andwish him the best of luck at Nationals.
Editor’s note: The following excerpt was reprint-ed with permission from theNEWS(www.achrnews.com).We’re pleased to reportthat Ernesto is now a US citizen, an accom-plishement that his employers at DebonAirMechanical celebrated with pride.
Six years ago at age 28, Ernesto Olivadecided he could no longer live within thegovernment suppression that was a way oflife in his native Cuba.Through buying andreselling rum, he saved “penny by penny toraise the $8,000 it took to buy a ticket tofreedom.” This ticket provided no guaranteebeyond the last opening available on a 32-passenger speedboat escaping to the UnitedStates. He took the chance, at one pointbelieving they all would die when a boat ofCuban soldiers approached with guns aimedtheir way.
Inexplicably — but fortunately for Oliva— the soldiers turned and left without fir-ing their guns. Seven hours later, Oliva andhis companions, only four of whom heknew, made it to his promised land.
“I sacrificed many things, leaving my mom, sister, and beloved grandfather, but for agreat cause; the most beautiful of all — to
be free and useful to society,” stated Oliva.“Let me be there in America and I’ll showyou, and prove what I feel.”
Prove it he did.Oliva began taking classes at a local voca-
tional school, where one of his teachersinformed him about Local Union 725’s tech-nical training center in Miami, where hecould pursue a lucrative career, earningmoney all the while he was going to school.
He did just that. For the past four years,Oliva has been employed by DebonAirMechanical, headquartered in Hialeah, Fla.
“Every single day I apply the skills at myjob that I learn in school,” said Oliva.“It’sunbelievable.And, the teachers are differentbecause they have all worked in the trade. They really know how to do it — not justfrom a book.“That’s something I couldn’tget at other schools.”

A new MCASF Student Chapter has been established at Florida International University (FIU) in Miami. FIU signed the Chapter Constitution on February 8, 2010 and has recently applied for the MCAA Emerging Student Chapter Grant.
The chapter plans to use half of the grant to award three scholarships ($250, $500 and $750) to highly motivated chapter members based on their involvement in chapter activities.
The remaining grant money will be used to aggressively market the chapter and advertise field trips, workshops, community service events, lec-tures, internships, scholarships and student grants. These incentives will attract a substantial student base while building strong relationships between students and the local affiliates.
Chapter members hope to attend future MCASF meetings and plan to participate in this year’s Student Summit, with a goal of competing in the Student Chapter Competition.
With the ink on its official MCAA charter barely dry, the chapter has few accomplishments to relate at this point. However, it does have an ambi-tious to-do list of projects and goals that includes holding monthly membership meetings, attending future MCASF educational offerings, participating in community service projects, and organizing a fundraising campaign to help underwrite the cost of attending the 2011 MCAA Convention and par-ticipating in the Student Chapter Competition.

Planning to hire a student intern? A MCERF Grant can help cover the cost.
If you have been thinking about hiring a student intern, now is the time to start your search. Today's college students are very savvy about new technology in our industry and they can put that knowledge to work for you this summer as a student intern.
Students majoring in mechanical engineering, construction manage-ment or similar disciplines are lining up their summer internship opportunities. Hiring a student intern is an excellent investment in your company's future. The intern you hire this summer could become your company's future full-time project manager or esti-mator when he/she graduates.
To help you take this important recruiting step, the Mechanical Contracting Education & Research Foundation (MCERF) is offering a $1,000 matching grant to help MCAA members cover an intern's salary. It's a win-win opportunity for everyone! Preference will be given to interns who are members of an MCAA student chapter.

By Bob AndrewsTwo Bills of interest to the Air Conditioning
Industry have been presented in the Florida Legislature. Senate Bill 0648 and its companion House Bill 0663 are currently in committee and subject to amendment. Both Bills will affect the
enforcement of the Florida Building Code/Mechanical Code. The text of both bills identi-cally states:(1) An agency or local government may not
require that existing mechanical equipment on the surface of a roof be installed in compliance with the requirements of the Florida Building Code until the equipment is required to be removed or replaced.
This would prevent enforcement of raising equipment to comply with current clearance requirements between the roof and equipment until such equipment is replaced. This is not nec-essarily a good idea because usually the best time
to install new roof stands or curbs is when the building is being re-roofed.(2) Notwithstanding the provisions of this sec-
tion, exposed mechanical equipment or appliances fastened to a roof or installed on the ground in compliance with the code using rated stands, platforms, curbs, slabs, or other means are deemed to comply with the wind resistance requirements of the 2007 Florida Building Code, as amended. Further support or enclosure of such mechanical equipment or appliances is not required by a state or local official having authority to enforce the Florida Building Code. This subsection expires on the effec-tive date of the 2010 Florida Building Code.
In other words, if the equipment is securely fastened to an approved stand, platform, curb or slab, it is deemed compliant and nothing further can be required. The lifespan of this provision should be enough to give the industry enough time to come up to speed on establishing wind-load ratings for equipment.
