Bulletin deadline is Friday, April 26, for the May 4-5 bul-letin. Please email notices to [email protected] or deliver to the parish office. You can receive email notifica-tions from Liturgical Publications when the new Our Lady of Mount Carmel bulletin is available online. The email contains a PDF of the bulletin. Good Friday abstinence and fasting: Those who are 14 years and older are obliged to observe the laws of abstinence by abstaining from meat on Good Friday, April 19. Also, all adults 18 and older, up to the beginning of their 60th year, are bound by the laws of fasting on Good Friday: We are limited to a single full meal (meatless). Two other meals suf-ficient to maintain strength may be taken according to one’s needs, but those two meals together should not equal another full meal.

Parish youth to host bake saleThe youth of the parish will host a bake sale following all Mass-es on May 4-5. Proceeds will help offset the cost for the High School Youth Conference, Steubenville East, this July. Thank you for your support!Importance of Adoration

One of the greatest gifts we have here at Our Lady of Mount Carmel parish is the continuous access to spend time before Our Lord present in the Blessed Sacrament. But for perpet-ual adoration to continue we need many people committed to coming each week. The night time is our greatest chal-lenge. Some parishioners cover for several hours straight. When Our Lord is exposed in the Blessed Sacrament there should always be someone present. If you are not a commit-ted Adorer, please consider covering for others when they cannot make it, or, even more helpful, committing to a week-ly time to come.

EASTER SUNDAYPastor’s Page“If Christ has not been raised, then empty

is our preaching; empty, too, your faith”(I Cor. 15:14).

Thanks be to God for Easter! We need the light, the joy, the Spirit of the Risen Lord to help us move forward in faith and hope. When we look at the world around us and see violence, discrimi-nation, division, injustice, we may be discouraged by all these evils and the bad news all around us every day. We may be disappointed by the failings of our leaders, both civil and ecclesiastical; we may also be discouraged by the lack of commitment to the faith on the part of many people, especially the younger generation; we may be saddened by an alarming number who increasingly say that they no longer need to go to church or believe in God or feel the need to practice any religion; we may be dis-heartened by the suffering around us, maybe in our own lives or in our fam-ilies and neighbors. In the midst of all these negative aspects of our imperfect world, we may lose sight of what God has done and continues doing for us. And so, it is the Resurrection of Jesus that gives us hope.

We may be discouraged by the prospect of a future where planet Earth, our com-mon home, and all the natural resources in it, may be threatened and not readily available for future generations resulting in an unhealthy living environment. We may be discouraged by a political system that fosters division in our own country; we may feel discouraged by the number of people who are losing their homes, are forced to flee their countries, causing family separation due to vio-lence, war, poverty and political turmoil; people who have become refugees or unwelcome migrants. In the midst of all these evils we may still find reason for hope because Jesus rose from the dead.

We may be saddened by the closing of our beloved churches, changes in our neighborhoods, the increasing number of deaths by young people from opioid overdose, but in the midst of all this we

still can find joy because Jesus rose from the dead.

The Resurrection of Jesus impacts ev-erything we say, everything we do and the way we live. It reminds us that Jesus is the Son of God, our Messiah and Savior. It makes Him credible, because everything He said and promised came true. Let us listen to the witnesses of the Resurrection: Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Peter and Mary Magdalene. Let them remind us of what Easter is about.

Easter is an invitation for all of us to pass from darkness to light, from de-spair to hope, from sin to grace, from slavery to freedom. In the midst of anx-ieties, fears, disillusions and disappoint-ments, we can find courage because Jesus rose from the dead. My hope and prayer for all of you this Easter is that our faith in the Resurrection of Jesus will be as strong and as real as the Apos-tles experienced and proclaimed.

“If for this life only we have hoped in Christ, we are the most pitiable people of

all”(I Cor. 15:19).

Sincerely yours in Christ

Most Reverend Edgar M. da Cunha, S.D.V.

Bishop of Fall River

Happy Easter! Jesus Christ is Risen! Alleluia! I know there is the Bishop’s letter wishing all of you a very Happy Easter and his thoughts on this most sacred time. I want to also wish all of you a very Happy Easter. It is a joy for me to be here celebrating this first Eas-ter with you as your pastor and I pray we are all being renewed in our faith and conviction that Jesus Christ is truly risen! What an incredible message that gives joy to everything we experience. I pray all of you will radiate the joy of the victorious risen Lord to all those in your families and those you encounter. Continue to remember, whenever you face crosses in your lives, that whenever there is the cross, the resurrection is also

Father Kevin Cookcaught up with it. It is the resurrection that we must continually place our hope in. As we see in our society a greater distancing ourselves from God, all the more we must strive to bring the truth of Christ and his gospel to them, and especially show the genuineness of if by how we live and imitate the heart of Christ towards them.

UnplannedThough it is limited in showing (as of last Sunday, the theatre closest to Seekonk showing it is in Lincoln, R.I.), there is a movie based on the true story of Abby Johnson, a woman who was an abortion provider for Planned Parent-hood who underwent an extraordinary conversion when she witnessed an ultra-sound of a baby as the baby was being aborted. As one priest wrote me about it: “In the valley of death Abby Johnson found the love of life.” It did receive an R rating because it captures the trau-ma, hopelessness, sadness, shame, and physical pain that accompany abortion, but many who have seen it have said they found it to be very powerful. Please consider making an effort to see it be-fore it leaves the theatres (but if it does, be mindful to be attentive to see it when it comes out on DVD or digitally).

Also, even more importantly, please consider joining other parishioners who gather to pray outside the abortion clin-ic in Attleboro on Saturday mornings. Last week while praying across the street from the clinic they were able to save two babies from being aborted. If inter-ested, please contact Ron and Claudette Larose for more information.

— Fr. Kevin

Roe Act – A Radical Abortion Bill Information from Mass Citizens For Life, 529 Main St., Suite 205, Boston. Go to masscitizensforlife.org to sign a petition op-posing this radical abortion act. These are the provisions of the Massachusetts ROE ACT, filed in the MA Senate as S1209:• Removes all parental involvement: Children will be able to go to an abortion clinic for any reason without parents being notified. • Gives abortionists carte blanche to kill: Their decision “may be exercised in the light of all factors —physical, emotional psychological, familial, and the person’s age — relevant to the well-being of the patient.” In other words, if you feel that the cost of college is a strain on your family, and you tell the doc-tor, you can get an abortion up to birth. This means that if the doctor decides you have a genetic risk for diabetes or for a child born with a disability, abort at any level of development.• Legalizes infanticide and removes the requirement to save the life of a 7-, 8-, or 9-month-old child who survives the abortion. If the baby is born alive during a late term proce-dure, he or she can be killed there on the operating table.• Makes abortions performable outside of a hospital, so this effectively legalizes back alley abortions. Roe will require that “Healthy Start” funds be used to pay for abortions on middle class women that do not have Medicaid/MassHealth. Ironical-ly, “Healthy Start” is a program begun to lower infant mortali-ty rates and serve underprivileged and at-risk mothers.

The Incorrupt Heart of St. John VianneyThis Monday, April 22, brings a rare and extraordinary oppor-tunity for people throughout southern Massachusetts to pray before the relic of the incorrupt heart of the patron saint of all priests, St. John Vianney. Since his death in 1859, his heart has not decayed, but has miraculously remained in the same state since it stopped beating at his death. On Monday, there will be a Mass at 7 p.m. at the St. Mary of the Assumption Cathedral in Fall River, followed by time to rever-ence the heart of St. John Vianney until 10 p.m.On Tuesday, April 23, veneration will be from 7 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., with Mass at 12:05 p.m.This pilgrimage with the relic of St. John Vianney’s incorrupt heart is sponsored by the Knights of Columbus.

First Communion at Masses on May 5, May 19On two Sundays, May 5 and May 19, at the 9 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. Masses, second graders will receive their first holy com-munion.Rather than having stand-alone Masses for the first commu-nicants and their families, Father Kevin wants to allow the whole parish to share in the children’s joy at regularly sched-uled Masses. Please keep all the second grade children in your prayers as they prepare to receive Jesus for the first time in the Holy Eu-charist. Please pray for their parents as well that they will con-tinue to strive to foster the great gift of faith with their children.

Thanks to those who helped with Triduum Many thanks to everyone who helped make this Triduum such a wonderful experience. Often, we may not realize how much effort goes into preparations for this most sacred time of the year. Many thanks to Jean Kusiak, the cantors, and the members of the choir who rehearsed over many months leading up to this time. Many thanks to Vicky Najarian, who put so much work into setting things up for the different Masses and Good Friday service and for all the decorating she did to make things look so beautiful for the Triduum (and her patience with me regard-ing any changes I made). Many thanks to all the servers, lectors, and extraordinary min-isters who served in different ways to help make the liturgies beautiful, and to Claire Creamer for coordinating the sched-ules for all of them. Also, thanks to all those who accepted to be one of the ones to have their feet washed.
