Este fin de semana como Iglesia apoyamos la colecta nacional para las Misiones Afro-Americanas e Indígenas. Gracias a la generosidad de la gente de esta parroquia y de las parroquias en los Estados Unidos, el año pasado se recogieron más de 8.8 millones de dólares y se distribuyeron 98 centavos por cada dólar recibido. Esa ayuda fue a algunas de las personas más necesitadas en todo EEUU; desde centros urbanos en la región rural del sur y los desiertos del sudoeste hasta las zonas frías y poco habitadas de Alaska. La nece-sidad de programas de evangelización es muy importante para nues-tra Iglesia en este mundo. Seamos generosos una vez más.

This weekend we as a Church support the national collection for the Black and Indian Missions. Because of the generosity of the people of this parish, and parishes around the United States, last year, over 8.8 million dollars were contributed and 98 cents of eve-ry dollar received was distributed to the missions. The support went to some of the neediest people across the US; from the inner cities of the rural South and from the deserts of the Southwest to Alas-ka’s cold wilderness. The need for evangelization programs is so important to our Church in this changing world. Let us be generous once again.

We begin the beautiful season of Lent, our annual observance for the ascent to the holy mountain of Easter. Repentance and bap-tism take center stage once again in the life of the Church. This beautiful season disposes both the catechumens of the universal Church and the faithful of the Church to embrace and celebrate the paschal mystery —dying and rising with Christ. The catechumens are led to the sacraments of initiation by means of the Rite of Elec-tion, the Scrutinies, and a deep catechetical reflection. The faithful are called to listen more intently to the word of God and to devote ourselves to prayers, to prepare ourselves through a spirit of re-pentance to renew our baptismal promises. Today we celebrate with four of our catechumens who have been chosen by Archbishop Gregory among the Elect of Christ. They are Valerie Torres, Enrique Torres, Juan Sanchez and William Diaz. I ask that you keep them in your prayers in a very special way as they continue their last period of preparation before they are initiated into the faith through the sacraments of Baptism, Confirma-tion and Eucharist. Today as we do every year around this time, we have our spe-cial collection for the Black and Indian Missions in the United States. Our support to this national collection helps sisters and brothers in the rural areas in the South, in the deserts of the South-west and in parts of Alaska. Finally, I want to invite all of you to once again participate in a Lenten journey with the Catholic Relief Services Operation Rice Bowl to help provide assistance to poor and suffering people in many areas of the world. The theme for this year’s journey is “Encounter Lent”, the theme reflects the invitation from Pope Fran-cis to recognize that “the Good News is no mere matter of words ... it is about leaving ourselves behind and encountering others.” I hope that all of us will participate again in this Lenten program ei-ther by contributing to, reflecting on and/or praying for those in need. May you have a blessed and fruitful Lenten season,

Comenzamos la hermosa época de la Cuaresma, nuestra prácti-ca anual para ascender a la cima sagrada de Pascua. Una vez más el arrepentimiento y el bautismo toman el lugar principal en la vida de la Iglesia. Esta hermosa época predispone tanto a los cate-cúmenos de la Iglesia universal como a los fieles de la Iglesia para acoger y celebrar el misterio pascual —muerte y resurrección con Cristo. Los catecúmenos son guiados a los sacramentos de la ini-ciación por medio del Rito de Elección, los Escrutinios, y una profun-da reflexión catequética. Los fieles somos llamados a escuchar con más atención a la palabra de Dios y a dedicarnos a la oración, para prepararnos a través del espíritu de arrepentimiento para renovar nuestras promesas bautismales. Hoy celebramos con cuatro de nuestros catecúmenos que han sido escogidos por el arzobispo Gregory entre los Elegidos de Cris-to. Ellos son Valerie Torres, Enrique Torres, Juan Sánchez y Guiller-mo Díaz. Temptation — What would Jesus do? First Sunday of Lent Week of March 5, 2017

Listen to the Word (Matthew 4:1 — 11) As you listen to the familiar story of Jesus’ journey into the desert, what word or phrase did you notice? As you heard it again today, what image from this story lingers in your memory?

Look into your life Question for children: What do you plan to do during Lent this year as a way of showing you want to grow closer to Jesus? Question for youth: Jesus was tempted by the devil. How are you tempted? What helps you resist these temptations? Question for adults: When you yourself pause to be alone with God, what distracts and prevents you from dwelling in that? Busy-ness? The demands of life? TV? The internet?

Activities for the week Take these activities to further reflect: Lenten resolutions can help us chose God’s will over our own will. As a family talk about what Lenten resolutions each person has made. Write out these resolutions and put them inside the family Bible. Decide what you will do as a family to observe Lent this year. Choose a television program the family has watched or a story in the newspaper or a magazine. Look for modern temptations that cause people to do the wrong thing. Discuss with your family what would be the best way to deal with these temptations. Display the crucifix in a prominent place in your home. Gather around the crucifix and have each family member reflect on a temptation that he or she is faced with in his or her daily life. Prayer, fasting, and almsgiving are the three principal practices of Lent. Discuss with your family what it means to fast or give something up for Lent. As a family, consider sharing a simple meal each week and then using the money saved to help a local charity like St. Vincent De Paul or Catholic Charities.

Pregunta para los jóvenes: Jesús fue tentado por el demonio. ¿Cómo eres tu tentado? ¿Qué te ayuda a resistir esas tentaciones? Pregunta para los adultos: Cuando usted hace una pausa para estar a solas con Dios, ¿qué lo distrae y evita su presencia? ¿Las deman-das de la vida? ¿La TV? ¿El Internet?

Vean cuáles son las tentacio-nes modernas que hacen que las personas hagan cosas incorrectas. Comenten con su familia cual sería la mejor forma de superar esas tentaciones? Muestren un crucifijo en un lugar prominente en su hogar. Reúnan-se alrededor del crucifijo y cada miembro de la familia reflexione sobre una tentación que enfrente en su vida diaria. Oración, ayuno y abstinencia son las tres prácticas principales de la cuaresma. Comente con su familia lo que significa ayunar o sacrificar algo por la cuaresma. En familia considere compartir una comida sim-ple cada semana y luego usen el dinero ahorrado para ayudar a una caridad local como San Vicente de Paul o Caridades Católicas.

At the beginning of Lent, it is the responsibility of the bishop to call those who are judged ready to cele-brate the sacraments of initiation at Easter. The bishop is to consult first with the pastors, catechists and oth-ers. The rite is also called “Enrollment of Names”. Each candi-date gives his/her name. When all have been enrolled, the bishop says: “You are members of the elect, to be initiated into the sacred mysteries at the next Easter Vigil.’ As we journey together to the Easter sacraments, the Elect will look to us for an example of Christian renewal. Let us pray to the Lord for them and for ourselves, that we may be renewed by one another’s efforts and together come to share the joys of Easter. Let us ask the Lord to guide our Elect throughout the time of Purification and Enlightenment, to strengthen them in their voca-tion, to build them into the kingdom of the Son and to seal them with the Spirit of the promise.

Al comienzo de la Cuaresma, es res-ponsabilidad del obispo llamar a los que considera preparados para celebrar los sacramentos de la iniciación en la Pascua. El obispo ha de consultar primero con los párrocos y catequistas. El rito es también llamado "La Inscripción de los Nombres". Cada candidato ofrece su nombre. Cuando todos se han inscrito, el obispo dice: "Ustedes son miembros de los elegidos para ser iniciados en los misterios sagra-dos durante la próxima Vigilia Pascual".

CREATE IN ME A CLEAN HEART As we begin the season of Lent we hear about the temptations of Jesus. This shows us the humanity of Jesus. He was tempted just as we are tempt-ed. It is important to understand that temptations come in many different forms, and that things that appear good may in fact keep us from doing the will of God. For many of us, obedience to God seems difficult, if not almost impossible. There are so many things and people that tempt us away from doing what we know to be true and right. Staying strong in the face of tempta-tion is a real challenge. The Holy Spirit guides our hearts and consciences, though and we are given all the grace necessary to learn God’s way and to obey God through our daily actions and attitudes. We must simply be willing to do so.

CREA EN MÍ UN CORAZÓN LIMPIO Al comenzar el tiempo de Cuaresma oímos de las tentaciones de Jesús. Esto nos muestra su humanidad. El fue tentado como nosotros somos tenta-dos. Es importante entender que las tentaciones vienen de muchas formas diferentes, y que cosas que aparentemente son buenas nos pueden impedir de hecho hacer la voluntad de Dios. Para muchos de nosotros, la obedien-cia a Dios parece difícil, si no casi imposible. Hay tantas cosas y gente que nos tienta y aleja de hacer lo que sabemos que está bien y es correcto. Permanecer fuertes ante la tentación es un verdadero desafío. El Espíritu Santo dirige nuestros corazones y conciencias, y hemos sido dados toda la gracia necesaria para aprender el camino hacia Dios y obedecer a Dios a través de nuestras acciones diarias y actitudes. Debemos simplemente estar dispuestos a hacerlo.

Saint Katharine Drexel (1858 — 1955)

Katharine Drexel nació en Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, el 26 de noviembre de 1858.

Era la segunda hija de un banquero y filántropo conocido. Sus padres infun-dieron en sus hijas la idea de que su riqueza había sido simplemente prestada a ellos y era para ser com-partida con otros. Cuando la familia hizo un viaje al occidente de los Estados Unidos, Katharine, como mujer joven, vio la

miseria de los indios nativos america-nos. Esta experiencia despertó su deseo

de hacer algo específico para ayudar a aliviar esa situación. Este fue el comienzo de

su misión personal de ayudar financieramente un gran número de misiones y de misioneros en los Esta-dos Unidos. Más tarde, mientras visitaba al Papa León XIII en Roma, ella le pidió misioneros para servir en algunas de las misiones indias que ella como laica estaba finan-ciando, ella se sorprendió al escuchar al Papa sugerirle que ella misma se conviertiera en una misionera. Katharine Drexel was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on November 26, 1858. She was the second daughter of a well known banker and philanthropist. Her parents instilled in their daughters the idea that their wealth was simply loaned to them and was to be shared with oth-ers. When the family took a trip to the Western part of the United States, Katharine, as a young woman, saw the plight and destitution of the native Indi-an-Americans. This experience aroused her desire to do something specific to help alleviate their condition. This was the begin-ning of her lifelong personal and financial support of numerous missions and missionaries in the United States. Later, when visiting Pope Leo XIII in Rome, and asking him for missionaries to staff some of the Indi-an missions that she as a lay person was financing, she was surprised to hear the Pope suggest that she become a missionary herself. After consultation with her spiritual director, she made the decision to give herself totally to God, along with her inheritance, through service to American Indians and Afro-Americans. On February 12, 1891, she professed her first vows as a religious, founding the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament whose dedication would be to share the message of the Gospel and the life of the Eucharist among American Indians and Afro-Americans. Founding and staffing schools for both Native Americans and Afro-Americans throughout the coun-try became a priority for Katharine and her congre-gation. During her lifetime, she opened, staffed and directly supported nearly 60 schools and missions, especially in the West and Southwest United States.
