Dear Parishioners:

Our parish is pretty amazing in so many ways. We do have great worship, good fellowship, and opportunities for ministry and service. God is doing great things to us who open our hearts to His love.

Our parish made a commitment a number of years ago to be hospitable. We built the Parish Center as a hub for getting to know one another, a place for ministries to meet and thrive, and a center for faith formation. It continues to be that today. On Sunday, coffee and doughnuts is our time to get to know one another, grow in love for one another, and recommit to serving one another. It is also to be a place to welcome the stranger. I fear that sometimes we can forget that last piece. We enjoy the company of those we work with and worship with. But have we forgotten the stranger among us?

Every Sunday I encourage those who are newcomers to the parish to come to the Parish Center to hear the good news of all that Our Lady of Hope has to offer. They enter a hall bustling with activity, yet they know no one. It can be scary to reach out to someone who is new. Yet, that is so important to keeping Our Lady of Hope the parish we know it is.

If you see someone who is sitting by themselves, go to them. Introduce yourselves. Introduce them to your circle of friends. Invite them into your ministry. Those gestures will continue making Our Lady of Hope the parish that we love.

Likewise, since we do have large gathering spaces outdoors, the Parish Center, and even the narthex for socializing, I would encourage you to keep a respectful silence inside the church. Too often I get complaints from people who say our parish is just too chatty. People come to the church early to pray and meditate and find it is hard or impossible to do that. Please respect that silence in the church. Ushers and hospitality ministers encourage people to take their conversations outside rather than in the main sanctuary.

Another area that has become a real problem is the parking lot. We all love to park as close to the church as possible. Yet, parking in yellow-striped no parking areas should not be done. When you do that you make it harder to get through the parking lot and make it dangerous for emergency vehicles to find their way to the assistance of someone in distress. So, please park in designated areas only.

The gospel calls us to reach out to one another. We are to be hospitable and welcome the stranger and visitor in our midst. But we must never forget that our first allegiance is to God. Sunday Mass is for most Catholics the one time during the week to be nourished by the scriptures and the Eucharist. Come prepared by reading the scriptures ahead of time, or at least seeing the synopsis printed in the missalette. After Communion don’t run out immediately. Spend some quiet time with the Lord. Let Him speak to your heart. Our parish is great because many people have allowed Christ to be the center of their lives. Invite the Lord to do the same for you.

Peace,

Fr. Chris

Question to ponder: In what ways can you better put into practice Jesus' teaching to love one another as He has loved us?

ARE YOU BORED? LOOKING TO MAKE NEW FRIENDS?

How about volunteering for one of the following ministries: BINGO– Thursday evenings starting at 3:30pm–9:45. Work the kitchen or floor. For information call Chiquita at 788-6144, Joan at 756-7970 or Lucy at 322-8037. CHOIR- We would like to extend a warm welcome to all our members and all new members who would like to be a part of our music ministry here at Our Lady of Hope. Please come and join us. The choirs sing each weekend for the Sunday Masses (9am & 11am). If you are interested in singing at these Masses, please join us in the choir room a half hour prior to

Mass. If you don’t know where the Choir room is please see an usher and they will direct you. EXTRAORDINARY MINISTER OF HOLY COMMMUNION An Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion serves God’s people by distributing the Body and Blood of Christ within the community. Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are selected with prayerful consideration of the needs of the community and qualification of the individual. Preparation for this ministry includes Diocesan instruction through the Office of Liturgy, parish instruction, and commissioning in the Parish. All ministers must be commissioned through the Diocese of Orlando. Please contact Patsy Pardon at 788-2934. FUNERAL MINISTRY- The funeral liturgy is the central liturgical celebration of the Christian community for the deceased. When one of its members dies, the Church encourages the celebration of the funeral liturgy at a Mass. Funeral Masses may be scheduled with the decedent in a casket or with cremated remains once the remains are available. “Memorial Masses” are not permitted in the Diocese of Orlando, (this means the absence of a body or cremains). There is a brochure available in the church which speaks about the Church’s teachings on cremation. At the funeral liturgy, the Church gathers with the family and friends of the deceased to give praise and thanks to God for Christ's victory over sin and death, to commend the deceased to God's tender mercy and compassion, and to seek strength in the proclamation of the Paschal Mystery. The funeral liturgy, therefore, is an act of worship, and not merely an expression of grief. The funeral liturgy is a time for the family and the friends of a decedent to come together and celebrate the person’s life. Please contact Daniel Weimer at 386-788-6144 or 386-299-4490 or email: [email protected] LAWRENCE WHELAN MEMORIAL LIBRARY-Our Parish Library is located at the end of the education wing of the Parish Center (room 2). The library is open the Second and Fourth Sunday of each month from 8:30am-12:30pm. Our Parish is fortunate to have such a beautiful welcoming room that contains many beautiful books covering a variety of subject. We have CDs, DVDs and Books for both adults and children. For more information, stop by the library and see our volunteers. RELIGIOUS GIFT STORE - Our Religious Store is located in the main entrance to the church. We have rosaries, statutes, missals, books, CD’s and a variety of religious articles. Volunteers are needed to work in the store before and after Masses daily and weekends. Please contact Victor Fonseca at 265-3567. THRIFT STORE– Monday-Saturday 9:00am-3:00pm. Call Chris at 767-0571 for more information. USHERS (MINISTERS OF HOSPITALITY)-These men and women, at times, assisted by our youth, greet and create a welcoming environment for people attending our church. They provide good order in the church. They are the "door keepers to the house of God." Some duties include arranging collections and organizing distribution of communion. Women and men are invited to join this ministry. Please contact: Tony Manzolillo at 386-882-5412. VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL- We are in need of volunteers to help organize and facilitate our VBS from July 8th –July 12th from 9:00am-2:30pm. If interested contact Rowena at 788-6747 or email: [email protected]. WELCOME TABLE-If you are available on Sunday Mornings after the Masses, we need someone to work the Newcomers Table to sign up new parishioners and welcome them to the parish. You only have to donate a 1/2 hour of your time once a month. Call office at 788-6144 for more information.

Funeral Notification and Planning

The death of a loved one is always painful, yet requires timely decisions for scheduling funeral rites. Contacting the funeral home/cremation provider of your choice is the first response following the death of a loved one. The funeral home or family member (for those who choose to use a direct cremation service/ society) should then contact, Dan Weimer, the Funeral Coordinator at Our Lady of Hope at (386) 299-4490. Dan will assist with scheduling a Mass or Service, and arrange an appointment with the family to plan the Funeral Mass/Service. Funeral Masses may be scheduled with the decedent in a casket or with cremated remains once the remains are available. Funeral Masses are scheduled and celebrated at Our Lady of Hope at the 8:30 a.m. Mass Monday

through Friday. Memorial Masses are not permitted in the Diocese of Orlando (this means the absence of a body or cremains). A date for a Funeral Mass/Service cannot be scheduled without the funeral home or family member contacting Dan. This policy is in place to avoid scheduling conflicts and assure the availability of the church and a priest. A new pamphlet explaining funerals with cremation is available in the pamphlet racks at the entrance of the church.

Bereavement Ministry (Comfort and Care)

SEASONS OF HOPE - A six week program, rooted in Catholic tradition, conveys God’s consolation through scripture, prayer, reflection and sharing our faith. Each year many families face the loss of loved ones. Seasons of Hope offers the bereaved an opportunity to come together to share with others and can give a voice to your unique journey of grief, finding healing and hope. For more information regarding our session, or if you would like to speak confidentially, please contact Pam Flesch at 386-788-1316.

MOVING ON– This ministry began two years ago and now has approximately 20 attendees each month. Based on the curriculum and articles that Maryann has written, the gatherings involve scripture, prayer, and sharing the everyday adjustments following the death of a loved one. The goal of MOVING ON after sadness and replacing joy in our lives is the highlight of our meetings. Moving On meets from 10 to 12 in the Parish Center (Rooms 6-8) on the last Wednesday of each month. The next scheduled meeting is May 22th. (Note Date change). If you need additional information, please call Maryann Curran at 386-756-2685.

Mission Statement: “Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church is a worshipping and welcoming parish community serving the Kingdom of God. We celebrate and live our faith in Jesus Christ through the Sacraments, and

by our words and actions.”

SPIRITUAL SHAPE UP SPIRITUAL SHAPE UP

Happy Easter! Welcome to the Easter Season—the 50 days between Easter and Pentecost. During this season, we will focus on prayer and the many special feasts that occur during this Season. During this season, I hope you can enter into the joy of the Resurrection, Ascension and Pentecost.

EASTER WEEK 5: THEY’LL KNOW WE ARE CHRISTIANS BY OUR LOVE I don’t know about you, but anytime I hear the Gospel from this Sunday, I can’t help but sing the song, They will know we are Christians by our love. It also makes me think about how do I show love to those around me? to my family, to my neighbors, to my co-workers, etc? How do you show people that you love them? This week go out of your way to show someone that you love them. Some ways that you may do this are a simple gift, a thank you note, going to visit someone, a phone call to someone far away, bringing cookies to a neighbor. This week pick one person that you think you need to show love to and do something special to show your love.

Want to go deeper Do you know someone who is really struggling with their faith, who has left the church or doesn’t believe in God? Go out of your way this week to reach out to them with love. Let them know that you care about them and so does God. The best way to evangelize to someone is not with words but with actions. Draw them into the church with your excitement, passion and expression of love. Let them know how special your church is and how special you think they are.
