OF DECEMBER 7/REFLEXIÓN DE LA COR-RESPONSABILIDAD PARA LA SEMANA DEL 7 DE DICIEMBRE “One mightier than I is coming after me. I am not worthy to stoop and loosen the thongs of his sandals.” Many of us may recall that proclamation from St. John the Baptist. It certainly reflects the hu-mility expected from all of us as stewards of the Lord.

Nevertheless, there is a deeper meaning in that statement which has both implication and applicability to us and our lives. At that time, the time of John the Baptist and Jesus, one of the basic teachings of Jewish rabbis was that a teacher might demand almost anything of his students and followers with one exception: that was to remove the teacher’s sandals. John tells us he is not worthy to do even that. This Advent season asks us to evaluate how we relate to God, and how prepared we are to serve Christ as His disciple, His steward.

Are we worthy? That is the question we need to be asking ourselves. And the truth is that none of us are worthy of the sacrifice and salva-tion provided us by the Lord. Jesus brings us an immersion in the Holy Spirit which takes us beyond this life and this understanding. Are we ready? It is time to get ready. Saint Pope John Paul II said, “The whole of our life must be an ‘advent,’ a vigilant awaiting of the final coming of Christ.”

RiesDear Parishioners and Friends of Our Lady of Fatima,/ Queridos parroquianos y amigos de Nuestra Señora de Fátima,I have had several inquiries about being able to drive. It’s understandable to wonder. For the record, I do drive. I have a 2001 SUV with 192,000 miles. About six years ago I had it equipped with Menox Hand Controls. This allows me to brake and accelerate with my right hand and steer with my left. A few years ago I drove across country to Virginia, solo, to visit my mom in her new location. I had no problems. I enjoy driving and the hand controls are a Godsend.

We have also had inquiries about the dollar amount posted in the bulletin each week. First, we want to give thanks to you for your generosity. This is the amount God has supplied to us through you, so we are thankful. Is it enough? It’s what was given, so it’s what we have to work with. We make adjustments to the budget, just like everyone else. There’s always something more to be done and every little bit helps.

Some ask about the wild fluctuations from week to week. This dollar amount is made up of what we receive in the baskets on Sunday, the online donations, and money received in the Parish Office either by mail or hand delivered. We find that some people, especially online givers, donate by the month. This could be at the beginning or middle. If you follow it for a few months, you will begin to see patterns. We are very blessed to have so many online givers. If you want to learn more about online giving you may call the Parish Office or check it out at our website, www.olfchurch.net.

Over 300 came to the first mass. Fr. Jim and Fr. William would like to thank all the ministers and others who helped with this first mass. It was a great success. We also want to thank those who attend the 5:30 PM Sunday Mass for being so accommodating and agreeing to start the Mass earlier at 5:00 PM.

FINDING COMFORT IN GOD’S PRESENCEIn the first reading, we are presented once again with the image of God as a shepherd who gathers his flock so that they may find comfort in his presence. In the words of Isaiah, God longs to be present to us and comfort us. During this season, we are asked to recognize more deeply God who became present to us in the person of Jesus and who continues to be present to us.

Fatima Café – Tamales Sale/ Fátima Café – Venta de TamalesThe Café will return Sunday, December 21st after the 9am, 11am and 1pm Masses on the patio of McGowan Hall. There will be tamales for sale, if you would like to order by a dozen, please call the parish office to pre-order by December 19th. The Café is being sponsored by our Spanish language ministry groups and will be open one Sunday each month. The menu will include a variety of traditional Mexican foods. Proceeds will help fulfill the ministries’ For Christ Forever campaign pledge as well as support activities in the parish.
