How can I become an Orientation leader?

Find out all you can about the Orientation leader position! You’ve already taken the first step by inquiring and

receiving an application. Don’t stop there. Attend one of the O- team info sessions February 26th, March 4th

(Informational Video, Online), and a last info session soon to be announced. 1st and 3rd session will be hosted at

Landon Events Room. Ask questions! The more people you speak with, the better you’ll understand the position

and what it’s really like to be the star of the school.

WHY become an Orientation leader?

Are you an enthusiastic student leader who bleeds red and silver, isn’t afraid to get loud, knows how to

have a good time, and wants to make a lasting, positive impact in the Barry University community? Then I’m sure you’re already interested in applying to be an Orientation Leader. Still not convinced? Read on for the top five

May 15th, 2020.

ORIENTATION LEADER ELEGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

The following requirements must be met to be eligible for application:

A cumulative grade point average of 2.75 at the time of application, which must be maintained

throughout the position.

Free from disciplinary warning, probation, and/or suspension at the time of application and throughout

the position.

Returners must be full-time enrolled students.

Full commitment of time and effort to the Orientation Leader Team and New Student Orientation

program, which includes attending and participating in the following activities. All of the following are

mandatory:

ORIENTATION LEADER JOB DESCRIPTION

Serving as an Orientation Leader (OL) is an honor and rewarding opportunity for personal and professional growth. Each

year, New Student Orientation selects a group of mature and dedicated undergraduate student leaders to assist with

implementing Orientation programs. OLs serve as peer educators, group facilitators, performers, resource contacts, and

role models to new students and their families during their transition to Barry University. As an OL, you are responsible

for reading and understanding the Orientation Leader Job Description and agreeing abide by all of the terms specified.

Failure to abide by the terms specified may result in termination.

I. To be eligible, each candidate must:

• Understand and uphold the Barry University Statement of Mission.

• Exhibit commitment to being an Orientation Leader and to helping new students and their families make a positive transition to Barry University.

• Possess the following role model qualities: maturity, responsibility, initiative, motivation, flexibility, enthusiasm, integrity, and good work ethic.

• Exhibit good interpersonal communication and group presentation skills.

• Be able to work effectively with a diverse group of team members and discuss the benefits of diversity.

• Be able to fulfill the following special of the position: work long hours that begin early in the morning and end late at night, remain outside in the heat for periods of time, and be responsible for transporting materials to and from Orientation sites for each session.

II. Terms and Conditions of Conditions of Position

• Length of Position – The duration of this position is a full Academic year.

• Remuneration/Payment – Orientation Leaders will receive the following:

1. A stipend remuneration

2. OL t-shirt/uniform, backpack, hat, water bottle & more.

3. Early move-in to assigned residence hall if living on campus during Fall 20204. Meals during Fall training

• Attire – Each OL must present a positive and professional image of Barry University by dressing appropriately for all sessions. Each OL will receive a uniform Orientation T-shirt and polo, and will be required to have their own professional khaki pants and sneakers. In addition, OLs must tuck in their shirts and wear the appropriate nametag at all times.

• Absences and Tardiness - During training and orientation sessions, OLs are expected to be on time and available for the entire time scheduled. Time off is limited and excused only on an emergency basis.

• Conduct - Orientation Leaders will refrain from consuming alcoholic beverages and using any illegal substances during all orientation sessions, training, and related activities, and when specifically representing Barry University. OLs must abide by all University policies. OLs should not use this role as a dating/networking opportunity. Any Orientation Leader subject to disciplinary action by New Student Orientation, Residence Life, or Barry University will lose their position as an Orientation Leader.

III. Responsibilities

Welcome new students and family members to Barry University during Orientation sessions and assist

them through the check-in process. Specific tasks are assigned to each OL during Summer Orientation to

do this.

Serve as a role model for new students and their families, and be accessible to answer their questions

and help them feel welcome.

Be a source of information regarding academics, policies and procedures, campus resources and

activities, building locations, and all other aspects of life at Barry University.

Facilitate well-organized, thorough discussions with new students. OLs are required to go over specific

information with students in small group sessions.

Represent all college organizations equally and accurately to new students and their family members.
