About ROBOTICON Tampa Bay 2018 Tampa - ROBOTICON Tampa Bay 2018 was our biggest and best event yet. This year, FIRST Robotics Competition teams played on a brand new field, made here locally in Tampa, intended to be the anchor piece of the Foundation for Community Driven Innovation’s new Fab Lab and Robotics Center, announced at the event. Over 4000 people attended ROBOTICON this year, which was also a Manufacturing Day event, enjoying the wealth of STEM education displays and interactive exhibits set up throughout the Yuengling Center. With support from University of South Florida, Hillsborough County, Lockheed Martin, Jabil, JPMorgan Chase, USF Connect and the Florida High Tech Corridor, SOFWERX, AFCEA, Women in Defense, Sourcetoad , Women in Technology, !p , Visit Tampa Bay and the Tampa Bay Sport Commission, and in partnership with PLuGHiTz Live and other fine local businesses and community organizations, ROBOTICON Tampa Bay was able, for the 6th year in a row, to provide students and guests an opportunity to enjoy a full scale FIRST Robotics Competition event featuring high school student built robots that weigh up to 120 lbs., as well as FIRST Tech Challenge (7th to 12th grade teams) , and FIRST LEGO League (4th to 8th grade teams) scrimmages and practice games, and a FIRST LEGO League Jr. Expo for the youngest roboticists, ages 6 to 9. This year, ROBOTICON was space themed, and we were joined by special guest, Kurt Leucht, of NASA Kennedy Space Center to share the latest from NASA. There were also workshops and panel discussions from Women in Defense, and Citi, and USF CARD, and terrific exhibits from the University of South Florida College of Engineering along with several of our great sponsors and event partners, there was something for everyone at ROBOTICON. Guests got to try their minds at brain controlled drone flying, test CO2 cars in the STEMWERX wind tunnel , meet motorsports luminary Jeff Andretti, check out the awesomely tenacious 4-legged robot SOFWERX had on display and launch paper rockets with an Infento air canon at the Green Mouse Academy booth, and more. The Board of County Commissioners once again issued a proclamation for ROBOTICON Month in Hillsborough County. And the biggest announcement to come out of ROBOTICON: the Foundation for Community Driven Innovation, our nonprofit event organizer, announced their new Tampa based Fab Lab and Robotics Center at University Mall, just down the street from the University of South Florida, which will be part of the new mixed-use city center under development there. FIRST youth robotics teams and others throughout Tampa Bay and central Florida will be able to use the facility to build, learn, and practice year round , and will have access to the full scale permanent FIRST Robotics Competition field, FIRST Tech Challenge field, FIRST LEGO League tables and a rich variety of tools and resources. Thanks to FIRST Tech Challenge, we were also able to give away another rookie team grant to a team wishing to help grow FIRST in their area. This year’s winner was FIRST Robotics Competition team 5816 Gra-V Robotics. Congratulations!

ROBOTICON & Economic Development ROBOTICON Tampa Bay directly impacts the growth and attraction of technology based businesses and startups through event participants, vendors, and business sponsors/mentors. The inaugural event in 2013, drew over 700 students from over 40 FIRST LEGO League, FIRST Tech Challenge and FIRST Robotics competition teams from around the state, and about 500 visitors from around Tampa Bay – over 1000 people over the course of the two day event. This year’s event brought together over 50 teams, and more than 1000 students and their support crews, plus another 3000 public guests. Nearly 80 University of South Florida area hotel rooms were booked, and participants dined at over a dozen area restaurants. Alongside the robot development for the specific game of the event, participants also enjoyed classes and workshops on all aspects of the technology industry from programming to business development, connecting participants with industry leaders sharing their knowledge and expertise.
ROBOTICON Impact
New teams are started, typically 2-3 annually
Existing teams find up new mentors and sponsors
New students find placement on existing teams
Live event coverage and interviews via PLuGHiTz Live provides a strong visual impact and a compelling format for raising awareness of the event and participants.
Attending teams become prepared for the new season.
New scholarship providers and team sponsors are identified.
Over $80,000 invested into the local economy as a result of the event each year, including hotel rooms, dining, and shopping, and event production, and this year
The Tampa Bay Advanced Manufacturing & Robotics Center (AMRoC) Fab Lab was launched, bringing a new academic and workforce development pipeline to the USF area Opportunity Zone.
ROBOTICON Tampa Bay is leveraging the private sector and the vast resources Tampa/Hillsborough County already offer to create a unique event that maximizes all that this industry has to offer, bringing industry leading experts from local businesses, startup accelerators, and the educational system together to share their talents, collaborate on ideas, and plan for the future with those who will be driving the future, students.

What’s Next for ROBOTICON ROBOTICON Tampa Bay is now fully established as an annual STEM and tech education
destination event in Tampa.
This year, we accomplished many of the goals we aimed for after last year’s event, and hit a
couple of unanticipated milestones early:
Enhancing Innovation Fair exhibits with more interactive displays
Bringing at least one new community partner on board (we brought six!)
Engaging community partners earlier and more effectively for event sponsorship,
College and Career Expo and other programming
o Lockheed Martin doubled their sponsorship
o Citi, WITI, Women in Defense and the Society of Women Engineers came
together to create a well-attended panel discussion on challenges and solutions
in STEM career pathways
o USF Engineering Expo was bigger and more robust and interactive than in past
years
Public participation increased by nearly 40%
We announced the launch of the AMRoC Fab Lab at University Mall, as a new
permanent FIRST robotics and STEM education facility
For our 2019 event, we’ll continue building on ROBOTICON best practices and aim to :
Grow team participation by at least 10%
Increase public attendance by at least 10%
Enhance Innovation Fair exhibits further with more interactive displays
Bring at least two new community partners on board
Incorporate pre-event programming into AMRoC Fab Lab
Thanks to the University of South Florida, Hillsborough County and the USF Area business
community, ROBOTICON is now a well-regarded, signature STEAM Competition event in Tampa
Bay, Florida and the nation, and an exciting and effective way to show our next generation of
science and technology leaders why they might want to live, work, play and learn in Tampa.

About Foundation for Community Driven Innovation
The Foundation for Community Driven Innovation (FCDI) is a 501c3 not for
profit organization dedicated to supporting academic achievement,
economic development and the spirit of innovation through inspiring
programs, active learning and exciting, innovative projects.
We do this by facilitating fiscal sponsorship for to help build the
capacity of project based, competitive STEAM education teams
that don’t have their own nonprofit organization or school support and by
supporting exciting hands on learning and living events like ROBOTICON Tampa
Bay, an annual youth STEM Showcase event. FCDI is the founder of the Tampa Bay
Advanced Manufacturing and Robotics Center (AMRoC Fab Lab), established in 2018 as
part of the University Mall mixed used, city center redevelopment effort, providing a home for
year round FIRST competition experiences and STEM education for all ages.
The Foundation for Community Driven Innovation is a Gold Level Guidestar member and a
Top Rated organization on Great Nonprofits. FCDI is also a member of the federally
