    Vinegar

    Compound Name: Ethanoic Acid

    Chemical Formula: CH3COOH

Characteristics: Most vinegars are very liquid. Some vinegars such as

traditional balsamic vinegar, however, are highly concentrated and have a

    thick consistency similar to syrup.

    Uses:

Commonly used in food preparation, particularly

in pickling processes, vinaigrettes, and othersalad dressings. It is an ingredient in sauces such as mustard, ketchup, and

    mayonnaise.

White vinegar applied as a spray to tissue draped over a sunburn

helps restore the lost acidic level to the skin, and gives a cooling

    effect.

    Used to fight infections.

Vinegar can be an effective antibacterial cleaning agent on hard

surfaces such as washroom tiles and countertops. Applying vinegar to common jellyfish stings deactivates

    the nematocysts

Vinegar can be used as an herbicide.

to de-ice driveways and patches of ice.

Sodium chloride is the principal extinguishing agent in fire

    extinguishers

Small particles ofsea salt are the dominant cloud condensation

nuclei well out at sea, which allow the formation ofclouds in

    otherwise non-polluted air.
